India showcases military might to foreign observers
Pokhran (Rajasthan) | November 18, 2005 6:15:06 PM IST

Indian Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee Friday joined military officials from 40 countries, including China and the US, to watch Indian armed forces showcase their firepower and strike capabilities here.

It is the first time that India has invited military observers from foreign countries to witness one of its wargames. Exercise Desert Strike in the deserts of Pokhran featured tank and artillery units of the army and frontline combat jets of the air force.

"It is a novel idea that observers have been invited to witness the exercise. The basic objective of India's foreign and security policy is based on two no's - no territorial ambition and no export of ideology," said the minister.
WTF no export of ideology .
India does and will export ideology of civilian lead democracy and non-theocratic statehood.

Sorry ... I forgot to add bollywood & culture export. 8)

George J wrote:There is no question of what to bomb or not bomb in the "WVR engagements". The engagement is between an MKI and something. The MKI is either in an offensive mode (escorting a strike package) or defensive mode (CAP). Since BVR was out of the question the MKI patiently waits for its adversary to come into R-73 range. The question is whats different about the MKI in these two situations it affects its performance in WVR enagagements.

The hypothesis was that an MKI is an MKI in any situation BVR or WVR. Thats what makes it an MKI. Its an air-dominance fighter. Now we hear that its can only dominate in offensive WVR but not defensive WVR. So this begs the question why? Is the load out making a difference? Also in an exercise why would it? Its not flying its usual "air defence config" its just flying with R-73 training rounds.

Too many questions.
Boss you forget that in a offensive mode the MKI itself can carry a very heavy bomb load. So it will not be only escorting but also doing the actual bombing..
well this mission is a offensive mission ... a offensive mission is deemed 100 successful if its primary and secondary targets were destroyed... for this mission it is not always necessary to engage and kill the enemy.. if the target is destroyed and the strike package comes back even without killing the enemy it is still deemed as a successful offensive mission...
On the other had in role reversal if the MKI does manage to kill a few escorting fighters but then still the target area which it is protecting gets bombed then the defensive mission is deemed a faliure...

Thats now I am in interpreting this:
Vishnu wrote:....As far as the WVR Su-30 MKI engagement was concerned ... there were at least two engagements ... one where the MKI was offensive and one where it was defensive. Though I suspect the MKI won the one on one when it was in an offensive position ... I am not sure what happened when it was defensive.
You talking mission...him talking engagement. Engagment is a subset of the mission.

Oh anyway I am on detention...so I cant press this matter further.

George J,

Being a WVR fight, putting someone in offensive/defensive positions
is often nothing more than issues of initial energy (alt, speed) and
relative placement (aft of 3/9 line).

It would seem so, but the MoD are no fools. Letting the Chini watch the exercise so that they can confirm the worst fears of their all weather friends.

Paki: "What did you see? Did the Yindoos run away fast?"

Chini: "You better introduce long distance running away into your basic training syllabus!"

Paki: "1 Paki = 10 Yindoos. We can run away 10 times faster already!"

Chini: "I hope so, friend. Hey, are those dark clouds coming in from the east? Gotta run, see ya later!"

I doubt the IAF would show the MKI's full capabilities even in WVR combat.

Exercise a great success, U.S., Indian AF leaders say
...
Exercise scenarios began with basic fighter maneuvers before building up to large force employments of mixed aircraft packages flying against one another. In one scenario, the AWACS was escorted by Indian Air Force Su-30s that flew against F-16 attackers.

“That’s 180 degrees from what I’ve always trained to and thought about,” said Lt. Col. Pete Bastien, AWACS detachment commander. “We think of the Su-30 as our adversary, but we’ve learned firsthand about the capabilities of their aircraft and the skills of their pilots.”

And when did the IAF boast? The compliments are coming in from the USAF not the IAF. Didnt know that was boasting.

And if you want to know how Falcons perform, try F-16.net - it has all the discussions possible, plus USAF servicemen posting.
