Exercise Indradhanush (Rainbow) '07 @ RAF Waddington, UK

Post by JaiS »

Please post all news, analysis and photographs from Exercise Indradhanush-2007 in this thread. Thanks. Link to the previously conducted Indrashanush-2006 is given here .

I believe that there will be plenty of photographs because of the active European aviation spotter community.

SU-30 of Rhinos of IAF to participate in joint exercise with RAF
http://www.gujaratglobal.com/nextSub.ph ... ttype=NEWS

Six Su-30 MKI multi-role combat aircraft of the IAF’s Pune based ’30 Squadron’, nicknamed ‘Rhinos’ operating under South Western Air Command (SWAC), will participate in the forthcoming joint air exercise with RAF.

This first ever exercise Indrashanush-07 is slated during July 2-12 over the British Airspace. This is part of the exercise, which began last year with an event in Gwalior in India in October.

The exercise is aimed at fostering closer defence cooperation ties with UK as a process emerging out of the series of Indo-UK Defence Consultative Group (DCG) meetings that began in 1995. The now annually featuring ‘Indradhanush’ series air exercise with RAF aims at enhancing mutual operational understanding of each other’s operational concepts besides familiarization with other aspects of maintenance, procedures and administrative practices. In addition, such exercises will help identify areas of commodity for future joint air exercises.

Preceding the exercise, IAF Su-30 MKIs and the IL-78 refueller aircraft will also participate at the Waddington Air show slated from June 30 to July 1.

After the cessation of the exercise at Waddington, two Su-30 MKI and the IL-78 refuller aircraft will proceed to join the Royal Air Tattoo planned at the RAF airbase of Fair Fort July 16-18.

some more details in this report:

IAF contingent to leave for joint Indo-UK air exercise

PUNE: A 200-member Indian Air Force (IAF) team and six Sukhoi-30 combat jets are set to travel to the UK this month to participate in the first joint air exercise in British airspace aimed at enhancing bilateral defence cooperation.

The IAF contingent, which will set off for the Royal Air Force (RAF) airbase at Waddington on June 24, will take part in the Indradhanush-07 exercise slated to be held from July 2 to July 12.

Besides the Su-30MKI jets of IAF's Pune-based 30 Squadron, nicknamed the Rhinos, one IL-78 mid-air refuellers will also participate in the exercise. Britain and India held their first joint air exercise in Gwalior last year.

The Il-78 will refuel the fighters taking a long ferry route with stopovers at Doha in Qatar and Tangara in Greece. The jets will reach Britain on June 28.

While the IAF will field the Su-30s, the RAF will use its Tornado, Hawk and Typhoon combat jets, VC-10 tankers and AWACS in the exercise.

Air Marshal KD Singh, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the South Western Air Command, arrived at the Pune airbase on Friday and addressed the contingent at a parade before its departure on Sunday.

Group Captain Girish Saini is leading the IAF contingent as the exercise director, while Wing Commander A C Chopra is the deputy leader. Wing Commander Bharti will lead the 20 fighter pilots and two navigators, the latter also doubling up as weapon system operators in the Su-30s.

Before the exercise, the Su-30s and the Il-78 will participate in the Waddington Air Show to be held from June 30 to July 1.

After the end of the exercise in Waddington, two Su-30s and the Il-78 will join the Royal Air Tattoo to be held at the RAF airbase in Fairford during July 16-18, a release said.

Two things to note- unless the MKIs recieve E3D cues, they are at an automatic disadvantage. The other con is that they cannot let the true capabilities of the Bars be on display - wonder whether the RAF will similarly open up the Captor. They might not have to, since they will get the E3D cues.

To my mind, the fact that the E3D is included in the exercise goes to show two things, apart from the guess that the IAF might have wanted it that way to learn as much as possible:

- How deeply the use of the E3 is integrated into RAF operational philosophy, when it comes to BVR
- The EF hype apart, the Su-30 MKI is not being taken lightly. No doubt the lessons of the MKI vs the Foxhunter equipped Tornados has kept people thinking.

I think AWACs will give support to both side, otherwise its not a fair contest. Not just that, if the scenario is EF + E3D v/s MKI then to bring it to something close to being equal contest IAF will have to use top end capabilities of BARs. Thats not a good idea. On flip side i feel its better to experience that for the first time in an excercise rather than in a real war. Since pukes have AWACs such scenario is possible.

What i am really interested in is outcome of Captor-M v/s DRFM based ECM suite. Being a mech. scanning radar its likely it won't be as immune to DRFM based deception jamming as a PESA or AESA.

Typhoon is excellent in speed, acceleration & agility [Must for top notch BVR platform]. Its equipped with AMRAAM C-5 & a cutting edge ECM suite. If its backed by E3D then this combo is one of the best for BVR combat out there in the world. Pukes or Chicoms can't throw such package for atleast a decade from today.

Agree with both.

With AWACs and the Captors top end modes under wraps, this will be hard to judge. But the RWRs will get a good workout.

I should have been clearer. What I meant was that despite the much tomtommed 1 EF against hajaar Sus propoganda that the EF team has handed out, when push comes to shove, they arent going to stand up without their AWACs in BVR against a top line Flanker. If they were that confident, then this was a beautiful propoganda opportunity to put their money where their claims are.
Also in short sharp BVR arrangements, the EF supercruise will be of limited use. The Flankers fuel status allows it to use reheat, and engage. This is no MiG-21! ;)

Additionally, I guess that s/n's and c/n's of all participating aircrafts will be much easier to dig out, because of the European plane spotters.

Dear E3D from Londonistan:

http://www.raf.mod.uk/equipment/sentry.cfm
E-3D Sentry AEW1

SpecificationsEngines: Four CFM 56 2A-3 turbofans Thrust: 24,000lbs Max speed: 460kts Length: 46.68m Max altitude: 35,000ft Span: 44.98m Aircrew: 18 Save to 'Compare aircraft'
Who uses the E-3D Sentry AEW18 Squadron RAF Waddington 23 Squadron RAF Waddington DetailsThe RAF operates seven E-3D Sentry aircraft in the airborne surveillance and command-and-control role. The aircraft are based at RAF Waddington, where they are operated by Nos 8 and 23 Squadrons as the UK’s contribution to the NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control Force. The E-3D also forms one arm of the UK Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) triad of Sentinel R1, E-3D and Nimrod R1 aircraft. Whilst primarily procured as an airborne early warning aircraft, the E- 3D has been extensively employed in the Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) role. The E-3D Sentry, known to the RAF as the AEW1, is based on the commercial Boeing 707-320B aircraft, which has been extensively modified and updated to accommodate modern mission systems. Mission endurance is approximately 11 hours (over 5000nmls), although this can be extended by air - to- air refuelling. The E-3D is the only aircraft in the RAF’s inventory capable of air-to-air refuelling by both the American ‘flying-boom’ system and the RAF’s ‘probe-and-drogue’ method.
The normal crew complement of 18 comprises four flight-deck crew, three technicians and an 11-man mission crew. The mission crew comprises a tactical director (mission crew commander), a fighter allocator, three weapons controllers, a surveillance controller, two surveillance operators, a data-link manager, a communications operator and an electronic-support- measures operator. The Sentry’s roles include air and sea surveillance, airborne command and control, weapons control and it can also operate as an extensive communications platform.
The aircraft cruises at 30,000ft and 400kts and its Northrop Grumman AN/APY-2 high-performance, multimode lookdown radar, housed in the black radome, is able to separate airborne and maritime targets from ground and sea clutter. One E-3D flying at 30,000ft can scan at distances of over 300nmls; it can detect low-flying targets or maritime surface contacts within 215nmls and it can detect medium-level airborne targets at ranges in excess of 280nmls. The multi-mode radar provides lookdown surveillance to the radar horizon and an electronic vertical scan of the radar beam provides target elevation and beyond-the-horizon operation for long-range surveillance of medium and high-altitude aircraft. These attributes allow it to determine the location, altitude, course and speed of large numbers of airborne targets. The aircraft’s mission systems can separate, manage and display targets individually on situation displays within the aircraft, or it can transmit the information to ground-based and ship-based units using a wide variety of digital data links.

Kartik,

Are you referring to a solo performance by a Flanker ? In that case you are correct. But, it has clearly been stated that there will be a simulated A2A refuelling performance by two IAF Flankers and a Midas, as part of the flying displays.

has anyone noticed the spanking new flight suits? not the usual blue - these are olive/drab and unusual, they'er wearing t-shirts/vests under them... compare with other IAF aircrew shots...

are the IAF boys getting new flight kit? or are these special-issue suits for this ex. alone?

*** This may change ****

The IL76 transporters may come and depart, but the IL78 tankers will stay.

The SU-30mki will be det at Waddo. to be honest I cannot see them taking to
the air on Ops until Monday afternoon because of the show arrivals &
departures.

I'm going to plug for Tuesday being their first full on Op`s day with
Monday being a familiarization of UK ATC , with Monday either a day at
departures (Not very likely considering what is penciled down for the
show)

3. On behalf of Graham Skinner ( sorry, email unknown )

Hi John and all

Checking the flight plans into Tangara today 26 June they had Titan
formation
which consisted of IL76 RK3452 and Su30 SB41, SB42, SB43. This
was followed later by Pluto formation of IL78 RK3451 and Su30 SB44, SB103,
SB107, and bringing up the rear was Bison callsign 1x IL76 K2663.
All
serials were what were posted on the flight plans so obviously are not 100%
confirmed. The only inbound to Waddington when i left work today was the
IL76 already posted but when i get into work tomorrow i will check to see if

anything has been flight planned. Remembering the deployment into Istres in
2005 an Il76 turned up the day before the rest so it looks perhaps to be the

case with Waddington. Afraid cant be any more specific at the moment but if
i do find out more will try and post to the list.

Hope this helps in anyones planning
Best regards
Graham

Those who are in the position to check the c/n ...

The plates in the IL-76/IL-78 are:
The c/n of the Il-76 is to be found in the rear cargo-hold pressure bulkhead which lifts up to the ceiling of the aircraft for loading and unloading and can easily be read off when the cargo doors are open. Some aircraft do not have it painted there, but in those cases, and all others, both doors to the cockpit from the cargo-bay carry a small plate with the last five digits.

IAF IL-78 FUEL TANKERS ARRIVE AT RAF WADDINGTON

WITH SIX SU-30 MKI FIGHTERS IN TOW

TORNADOES FROM RAF LEEMING TO ALSO ARRIVE TODAY

RAF Waddington, UK: June 28, 2007

The touchdown by the first Indian Air Force (IAF) Su-30 MKI (Flanker-H) air superiority fighter at exactly 0930 hrs local time (0830 hrs GMT) at the Royal Air Force (RAF) airbase Waddington, marks a historic chapter on the 75 th anniversary year of the IAF. It also invigorates the growing defence cooperation between the two air forces.

The fighters arrived in two separate waves trailing the two IL-78 fuel-tankers in a formation of three each, all-along from Tanagra in Greece. The lead IL-78 MKI of the 'Titan' formation was lead by Group Captain K Raghavendra with the three Su-30 MKI's in tow that were captained by Group Captain Girish Saini, Team Leader of the IAF contingent, Wing Commander AK Bharti, Commanding Officer of the No. 30 Squadron and Wing Commander H Assudani. Wing Commander N Kharkar led the second wave 'Pluto' formation that landed 45 minutes later. The Su-30 MKIs in the formation were lead by Wing Commander Asit Kumar, Squadron Leaders S.V. Munje and Nitin Jain.

"This is undoubtedly history in the making", remarked Air Commodore PP Reddy, IAF's Air Attache at the High Commission of India, London. He was present to welcome the IAF contingent, arriving for the first-time ever, at United Kingdom (UK). Among others who were present also included Group Captain Andy Fryer, Station Commander of RAF Waddington, Wing Commander Jobling, Officer Commanding (OC)-Operations at the base and officers of the 'Air Command' Team comprising Wing Commander S Cockbill, Squadron Leader M Cowie, Flight Lieutenant R Middleton and Squadron Leader Richie Dicks, the Project Executive Officer belonging to RAF's No. 25 Squadron and responsible for the planning of the exercise.

"The feeling is very good!" remarked IAF Contingent Leader, Group Captain G Saini immediately after landing. "Except for the terrain being flat as seen from air, the environment is quite similar to that in Pune. And yes, the weather is also good!" he further added.

"It's a good first! A year's planning has been brought into fruition and the sight of the Su-30 MKIs on the tarmac is fantastic", said Wing Commander S Cockbill, representative from RAF's Air Command. "It is a wonderful thing (exercise) to be happening as it will invigorate the relations between the two Air Forces that had seen a slight downswing after the early '60s", he said when interacting with some of the visiting IAF personnel.

"Most importantly the fighters arrived on time and safely", said Group Captain Raghavendra, Commanding Officer of the IL-78 Squadron after the sortie. "And this has been possible (strategic reach for the fighters) ever since the IAF began operating the air-refuellers since the last four years", he further stated.

As such the RAF airbase is already teeming with aviation aficionados in view of the weekend air show, but the arrival of the much talked about Su-30 MKIs kept most enthusiasts scanning the skies awaiting their arrival. The Tornado F3 aircraft belonging to RAF's No. 25 Squadron from the Leeming RAF airbase is also scheduled to arrive at Waddington by late evening today.

A total of 18 Fighter Pilots and two Flight Navigators who will also double-up as Weapon Systems Operator (WSO) will be flying the Su-30 MKI's during the exercise. At the weekend airshow at Waddington, IAF Su-30 MKIs and IL-78 are slated to participate and are major attractions already.

Pics will be put up on the Indradhanush gallery later tonight.

So all the pictures show no aircraft armed. While I'm not sure if that depends on any policy or understanding with the host country, but would the MKI's been armed at any point during their journery across international airspace?

Sigh...anyone trying to do this in any IAF military airport is liable to shot at or
chased by a pack of dogs. Yelehanka has a sandbagged tower near the
highway with a sentry who looks keen to try his gun out....its definitely a no
can do there.
