It appears to me that Brit aviation enthusiasts are spending a LOT more time and effort buying good cameras than SDREs.

That gives me an idea for the next Aero India

Dont forget the vast amounts of money on step ladders and the burger bar at the end of the runway. I was there yesterday along with 100 others from UK, France, Germany, Holland, Japan and USA.

'INDRADHANUSH 2007' - AN IAF EXERCISE OF MAMMOTH PROPORTIONS IN OPERATIONAL, LOGISTICAL, MAINTENANCE AND ADMINISTRATIVE PLANNING

The ongoing bilateral Indo-UK air exercise - 'Indradhanush 2007', at Waddington involves primarily - flying activities. On terra firma overseas, a great deal however involved meticulous logistics, phenomenal administrative, technically flawless and sound operational planning.

At the forefront of such planning have been IAF officers at Air HQ, New Delhi, South Western Air Command (SWAC) HQ, Gandhinagar, Central Air Command (CAC) HQ, Allahabad, and at the Air Force Bases at Pune and Agra, for over six months.

"Bringing it to fruition was a challenge" says Wing Commander AC Chopra, of the elaborate exercise planning. The Deputy Team Leader who together with the Logistics Officer, Wing Comander Manish Dialani and few more officers from the operational and maintenance side made visits earlier to the UK for coordinating the requirements.

"The challenge has just begun," maintains Wing Commander Dialani, of the vast logistical issues that will need winding-up after thorough scrutiny when the team members leave. They were among the core members who arrived at UK ahead of the IAF team and will be amongst the last to leave.

"It is good to have a logistics officer accompanying the team" - echoed most IAF members as the nitty-gritty of accommodation, transportation and food have been well taken care of. Wing Commander Chopra – 'Choppy' – to mates on either side, who had a year's stint earlier at UK during his Staff course in 2003, was on a familiar ground and that helped matters in administrative tie-ups, locally.

"My airmen leave very early in the morning everyday to get the fighters ready in time for the day's exercise. Their requirements of breakfast and vehicles are timely, the going has been smooth" admitted Squadron Leader SBH Reddy, Senior Technical Officer (STO) of the 'Rhinos'. He is at the helm-of-affairs of the technical maintenance of the fighters, and together with his motivated technicians, aims at a '100-percent serviceability' of all the jets during the exercise.

Just 3 miles North of the Royal Air Force (RAF) Waddington, the University of Lincoln is normally bustling with student activities. Averaging nearly 17,500 students, the campus now is transformed into a military bastion besieged by the combined strength of Ex-Indradhanush airmen from the two elite Air Forces of the world - IAF and RAF. "It has been possible to accommodate the members from both Air Forces as the students are on vacation," informs the management at the University.

With the exercise venue being at RAF Waddington, an arrangement convenient with the University now houses 150-members from IAF and 75 from RAF's No. 25 Squadron.
The visitors couldn't have asked for a better location. At just a walking distance from the city center, and the centuries old historical Lincoln Cathedral and the Lincoln Castle, the University forms an ideal retreat.

"We are very happy with the arrangements," says Master Warrant Officer D Arpurtharaj, the senior-most airman from the 'Rhinos', on behalf of his boys. Since it is a first-ever 'out-of-country' assignment for nearly all, the excitement, enthusiasm and joie de vivre is palpable in their day-to-day activities in the flight line.

Sickness, another of the worries has been mostly kept at bay. "Primarily there have been only a few cases of loose motions, upper respiratory infections – bronchitis, because of the weather," informs Wing Commander D Chakraborty, the Aviation Medicine specialist accompanying the team who has set-up a small 'medical centre' within the 'daily servicing section' for the ease of his patients. The IAF members arrived at Waddington in the thick of British monsoons after experiencing a simmering hot spell at Doha and Tanagra that led to respiratory problems for a few.

That the exercise is truly going on smoothly and on schedule is a result of the efforts of innumerable IAF air warriors at various levels. The IAF contingent has been presenting themselves as a well turned-out and disciplined outfit. "Surely our Air Warriors deserve to be kitted with the best, for they are representing India," said Wing Commander Shyam Sunder proudly, the Senior Logistics Officer at Air Force Station, Race Course, New Delhi before the team's departure from India. The Station is responsible for all the kitting of IAF contingents when going abroad on UN missions and other foreign assignments.

[quote]Indian first as bilateral exercise reaches halfway point

Back to news article list

The second bilateral Indo-UK air exercise, Indra Dhanush 07, involving the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Royal Air Force (RAF), has reached its mid-way point at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire. The exercise is a first for the Indian Air Force as this is the first time they have exercised in the United Kingdom.

The inaugural day last week was aimed at introducing the participating IAF Su-30 MKI aircrew to the flying environment within the UK and saw them flying alongside RAF F3 Tornadoes of 25(Fighter) Squadron that are normally based at RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire, but who are operating from Waddington for the duration of the exercise. Also airborne were a Eurofighter Typhoon and a Hawk aircraft.

For all who watched the National Geographic program - Mission Udaan - you will recognise Wg Cdr A K Bharti. He is the same pilot that spoke about the Rambha's advantage in air combat with the use of thrust vectoring. Refer to Episode 8 from 15:38 onwards.

And here he is again with the CAS! Wg Cdr A K Bharti

The visitors just could not have enough of the two Su-30 MKIs of the IAF’s No. 30 Squadron (‘Rhinos’) and the giant IL-78 MKI that were put-up for display. Aircrew and aviation enthusiasts were seen busy, persuading IAF air warriors to part with their squadron and aircraft badges for keepsake, and most willingly obliged. Clearly IAF was winning hearts all the way.

The IAF CAS answered three questions

1. one from a TV wallah asking whether his visit to the UK that may be coinciding with an IAF arms buying spree was going to result in increased tension with Pakistan. The CAS answered that the IAF was exercising with many overseas nations and in short it was part of their philosophy of learning more about the operations of other airforces.
2. Yours truly asked a question about the delivery of the fast track order for 40 SU30MKI announced at Aero India in Bangalore in February. Answer given was first aircraft in 2008.
3. Chris Pocock asked about the MRCA RFP. Answer due to be released very soon.

Prior to this he had thanked the RAF for their hospitality etc. Both RAF/IAF made it clear that they wished the interface to continue with next round probably in 2009 in India subject to Government approval. ACM Major was presented with a trophy awarded by RAF Waddington for the best turned out aircraft in the airshow ststic display. This was passed onto the 30 squadron c/o.

Nitin,

Q. How many SU30MKI do we have now?
Q. What is the time line for 18 swap SU30MK
Q.Any idea on what the next variant might have - (a deal was signed to continiuosly upgrade them). Any news on what these upgrade could be, How far is AESA? I mean having AESA is just swapping out the transmitter and the reciever, everything else developed for BARS (modes, software etc) shouuld be portable, or not?
TIA,

Indian MoD

INDRADHANUSH-2007 DRAWS TO A CLOSE AT UK
Curtains were finally drawn on the second bilateral Indo-UK air exercise - Indradhanush 2007, which concluded on a high note here at Royal Air Force (RAF) Waddington on Thursday.

The exercise that began with a series of 1vs1 sorties, reached its crescendo with a highly complex conceivable scenario - a 6vs6 aerial combat involving 4 x Su-30 MKIs, 4 x F3 Tornadoes, 2 x Typhoons and 2 x GR9 Sea Harriers of the Royal Navy. Also airborne were an IL-78 MKI air-to-air refueller and an E3D Sentry AWACS aircraft in the vicinity of the exercise.

Air Chief Marshal FH Major, Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Indian Air Force (IAF) who is on an official tour to UK currently, was present at RAF Waddington to see the exercise culminate and meet the participating IAF team members. Air Chief Marshal Sir Clive Loader, Commander-in-Chief (CinC) Air Command, RAF accompanied the CAS during the visit.

This was the first time that the IAF carried out an exercise anywhere in UK. It was also an exercise where the IAF Su-30 MKI's maiden arrival over the European sky was keenly awaited by thousands of aviation aficionados and spotters, who thronged the perimeter of the airbase unfailingly on a daily basis, all through the exercise duration. This was also an opportunity that provided social and cultural interaction between the two countries.

The visit by the IAF team also coincided with the Waddington International Air Show and the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) at Fairford, within a span of two weeks. IAF participation at the two events were a coup of sorts for the organisers. Having been adjudged the 'best static display' at Waddington air show, expectations are already soaring high at the RIAT, the world's biggest air show.

The exercise wasn't about winners or losers, yet both sides ended on a winning note. "It was an excellent learning curve for our pilots who will go back with a lot of experience" said the Indian Air Chief. He also thanked the Government and the RAF in England for hosting the IAF. The RAF C-in-C termed the exercise as an 'outstanding success'.

Earlier, Station Commander RAF Leeming, Group Captain E Stringer while briefing the visiting CAS stated that the |RAF had adopted a 'building-block' approach to meet future IAF training and coalition aspirations. "The exercise achieved all its aims and objectives" - he further stated. Summing up on the RAF experience he said that a major outcome of the exercise was the appreciation of the fact that the two Air Forces actually "see the world through similar eyes", and that there were many "commonalities" in the tactical procedures of the two air forces, thereby laying a foundation for further RAF-IAF interactions.

From UK MoD

Exercise Indra Dhanush Wraps Up at Waddington

The first ever combined United Kingdom /Indian air exercise to take place in the UK has drawn to a close with both sides pleased by what they achieved during the fortnight-long training package.

Exercise Indra Dhanush, which took place at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire, followed on from a successful training exercise between the Royal Air Force and Indian Air Force (IAF) in India in 2006.

This time pilots and aircrew from Waddington welcomed their Indian counterparts to the UK after training with them in Gwalior and Agra in 2006. The two-part exercise, designed to further develop UK and Indian relations, is the first time that the two countries have worked together in more than 40 years.

Officer Commanding 25 Squadron, Wing Commander John Prescott, said:

"We first worked with 43 Squadron India for the first part of this exercise in 2006 which the Indians hosted. Working with a nation we were not familiar with proved to be extremely good value.

"It is good for both sides to be able to adapt and work with each other and gain a level of understanding with officers and airmen - not just in the air but in a social situation as well.

"From my point of view there are mixed experience levels in the Squadron across all ranks with some having experience of working alongside other countries, while others have no coalition experience.

"This exercise has given them the chance to learn how to operate closely with a different nation, particularly a country which is non-NATO and non-European. Both ground crew and pilots have gained confidence and flexibility from the work they have done.

"It's been an absolute success with all of the aims and objectives achieved. We have gone from simple air exercises to large force employment in a variety of operational relevant scenarios.

"The Indian pilots spoke excellent English, so apart from taking into account a different accent, there were no problems with communication."

The Indians are using SU30 MK 1 fighters during the exercise. They have also brought a tanker and full ground crew with them.

The IAF has historically chosen many UK aircraft for its fleet, with India already having acquired the Hawk fast jet trainer. Their procurement of the Hawk has seen many IAF pilots training at RAF Valley as part of the deal.

The Exercise Indra Dhanush training has evolved from basic, simple air exercises to large scale force employment in a number of operational scenarios. Flt Lt David Griffiths, a pilot with 25 Squadron, said:

"It's been a fantastic experience, and not like anything I have done before - it is my first time working with another nation and it's the chance of a lifetime. It's been extremely challenging.

"We have been really working together and integrating crews from both nations onto each side. We have had to learn each other's terms and tactics and it has definitely been rewarding."

Wg Cdr A C Chopra added:

"We wanted to build on last year's exercise in India and we have been able to meet our objectives. We have flown in mixed formations and now have a degree of interoperability."

Hmmmm let me decipher this diplomatese.

Guy1 is saying "....excellent learning curve for our pilots..."
Guy2 is saying "......outstanding success for us......."

So Guy1 is admiting his pilots have a lot of learning to do which means they didn't do too well in the exercise? And Guy2 is saying, phew we did alright considering the facts?

I think prior to this exercise the IAF SU-30MKI and its lesser variant the SU-30K had established superiority in all the prior exercises they have been involved in vis a vis the USAF, Singapore Airforce as well as the prior visit of the RAF to India in which the RAF sent only its Tornadoes as the Typhoon was not yet in service. In this exercise I suspect that for the first time, the SU-30MKI was not able to establish air dominance given the presence of the newly commissioned Typhoon with the RAF. And so the IAF guys have got "some learning to do", to try and come up with new tactics to handle the newer generation of aircraft with superior T/W ratios. While the RAF guys are relieved that the Typhoon has been able to hold its own against the SU-30MKI which does have a good reputation especially as the first operationally deployed TVC fighter in the world.

it appears for the first time su-30 mkis faced some serious challange from the typhoons -I would not go so far as to say they were beated out and out but maybe more than evenly matched would be the correct statement -which means typhoon for MRCA is a real possibility

we need a similar exercise with the mig 35 too

and who has the MiG-35 in service ? :P or do you mean that the IAF should exercise with a single or a couple of company demonstrators? they're still paper products unfortunately with no airforce backing them, definitely not the RuAF.
anyway, the IAF is going to exhaustively evaluate all the MRCA contenders, so no exercise is needed as such.

elementary Bala ! tis the Typhoon you see..:) what the USAF has been bringing against the Su-30MKI is the F-15C and the F-16 Blk 50. both are not quite a match 1 vs 1 with the MKI..whereas with the Typhoon, one would assume it would match, if not exceed the MKI's capabilities..

Indian AF Detachment at Waddington

Posted by: "rick sleight"

Fri Jul 13, 2007

Dear All.

For info., some details on the current detachment.

Last night, the Il-78 and two Su-30 aircraft departed
to RIAT for static display and one other Su-30 flew a
shortened version of a display at Fairford and then
returned to Waddington around 1900L.
The Indian AF are hoping to fly a single Su-30
aircraft in the display at RIAT (at least on Saturday)
but I do not know if it will go to RIAT today and land
there or fly direct from Waddington? The Indian
aircrew said that the airfield at Waddington is
"closed" on Sunday, therefore I suspect the flying
aircraft will land at Fairford on Friday/Saturday, if
it is flying both days but I cannot be certain?

As far as departure information goes, the aircraft are
all departing Waddington on Tuesday (no actual times
yet but likely to be morning according to the crew).

3 Transport aircraft (2 x Il-76 and 1 x Il-78)
"should" arrive on Saturday 14th, with one Il-76
departing during the early morning of Monday 16th July
(an advanced party again, as was the case on arrival)
and the remaining aircraft (6 x Su-30, 2 x Il-78 and 1
x Il-76) will depart on Tuesday 17th.

One thing is for certain, is that the detachment has
now ended and there will be no more flying, except for
the RIAT and departure movements.

I am sorry this info. isn't quite concrete but I hope
it will assist someone?

Once I get details of the transport arrivals, I will
post, unless someone beats me to it, which might well
be the case, as I am at RIAT on Saturday!

Regards

Waddo airshow reviews...

Post by JaiS »

Waddington's Indian Summer

Tim Senior looks at the forthcoming Waddington Airshow, and its eagerly awaited exotic Indian visitors. Pictures by Gary Parsons.

The appearance of the Indian Air Force, here to celebrate its 75th Anniversary and participate in Exercise 'Indra Dhanush', is another 'first' for the hard-working airshow team. Negotiations have been ongoing for two years, and it's not co-incidence that the exercise follows the airshow weekend. Last year personnel from 43 Squadron at Leuchars and from the Sentry community descended on Agra and Gwalior Air base in India during October, cementing the relationship between Waddington and the IAF.

The RAF Waddington Internation Airshow is the RAF's premier event of the year. As such it is always a highly anticipated affair. This year saw the UK airshow debut of the Indian Air Force Sukhoi Su-30MKI multi role fighters and their support Il-76 and Il-78 aircraft. They were in the UK for Exercise Indra Dhanush, a joint exercise with the RAF. Sadly though, the extremely wet weather intervened seriously affecting Saturdays flying displays and eventually leading to the cancellation of the Second day altogether. Paul Johnson/Flightline UK reports from a very very wet Waddington. All photography copyright of author.

There's no doubt the Indian Air Force detachment of Su-30 fighters and their support aircraft were the highlight of the Waddington airshow. They didn't come all that way just for the airshow. The Su-30s and a support Il-78 are here for two weeks as part of the return leg of Exercise Indra Dhanush involving the RAF Leeming based Tornado F3's of 25(F) Squadron. The aircraft and their crews attracted a great deal of attention at the show . The crews in particular seem to enjoy the attention and were only too happy to talk about their aircraft, While two fighters took pride of place in the static park, three fighters got into the air in pretty miserable conditions before returning for a flypast and a streamed landing marking the first flying appearance by a "Flanker" variant since the appearance of the Su-32FN at Farnborough.

The only international participation in the flying were a trio of the Sukhoi Su-30 fighters from the Indian Air Force. Despite not being display pilots and therefore not being able to show the true potential of these awesome aircraft it was still high point of the display for many. It's been far too long since we've seen an aircraft from this family in the air at an airshow.
