ANTONY FLIGTH 24 X AN-32 10 MINUTES FROM DROP ZONE

Colonel amrik sing of of 50th independednt parachute brigade inspected the line of 48 troops in his aircraft one last time sitting some what too relaxed in the line of metal seats along the length of the noisy aircraft now flying at its top cruise speed and the vibration from its twin turbprops was horrendous . His would be the first group to jump and apart from standard insas 5.56 mm assualt rifles were also carrying a comparitive large componet of 90 mm recoilless rifles to neutralise any enemy armour that will surely come in once the drop starts . Apart fom that a few of them were also carrying stingersand igla point defense surface to air missiles and a few 12.7 mm medium machine guns . The mortars and bmps were reported already being dropped fromthe il 76s and their job was to secure them asap before the enemy realises the true object of this mission . Total of 1000 paras will be dropped in thext 30 minutes 760 indian and 340 us . 12 BMP 2 have been dropped along with a couple of gypsies fitted with mounts for the medium machine guns and recoilless rifles . Once evryone has landed the whole group was tasked to proceed with all speed to the target -secure the nukes and fissile material and exit -though he did not exactly knew how since this ops was a strict need to know type -must be some kind of hot extraction by the choppers he thought as the rear clam shell door started opening up and the everyone was ontheir feet and the jump master or despatcher checking the chute hook connections for one last time .The cold outside air hit the moment the doors were open and at more or less the same time the drop signal light turned green

- go go go screamed the despatcher and he stepped onto the void at 3000 ft - the rush of air past his helment was an audible hell as he tumbled and regained balance -wrist altimeter showed 1000 ft and he jerked the ripchord a few seconds of heart stopping delay and then the re assuring firm tug of the chute opening around him he could see his group slowly started forming up - the night was slowly turning to day as the first joint group of indo-us paras touched ground and went busy straight way building up a secure perimeter around the drop zone ,a make shift first aid centra ,a satelite com centre and positioning the rcl and medium machine gun units along the projected threat axis . Up in the sky multile contrails of patroling sukhois asssured them atleast no danger from up could possible harm them at least for the time being .

The rest of an-32 s came in and started offloading thier human cargo -the sky was soon filled with white chutes and the chaos on ground increase ten fold as each new drop touched ground and was rushed by the ncos in to his assigned position and vehicle .Afew broken ankles and few dissapointed paras but overall the first part of the drop went alright .

Credit for this joint special ops would invariably go to the first such joint exercise held in agra in 2002 when majot jim yukes c-130 touched agra after a long voyage from honululu which flew in thru wake island-guam-philipines and thailand to agra. The exercise gave the special ops forces of both countries to get familiarised with each other aircraftand weapon ssytems and first such drop with indian paras using american chutes and americans donning indian chutes occured in 21 st october when nearly 120 indian paras jumped out of the back of a us national guard c-130 .Indian airforce an-32 pilots flew as observers in c-130 and vice versa . Several similar exercises followed both in us and in india and todays sucesful drop could be attributed to those days of hard work and sense of trust that built up during those exercises for just this kind of scenario

and the four sukhois lit their after burner armed up their missiles 2 each of the r-77 and r-73s because the bandits were flying in low and chance of sucess with active radar missile at that altitude was not very good and the ground troops are still too vulnerable to air strike in the regrouping /assembly area .

Colonel Amrik saw the launch of the first volley of r-77s for the first time in his life though he could not see the effect that of 4 mirages blown out at a distance of more than 50 kms away far beyong his vsual range even with his powerful field glasses but the next phase of air battle he witnessed in full colour and would some ady tell his grand children by the side of a log fire in some remote vilage of ludhiana.

The 2 mirage 3 s streaked in low and released teir load of 500 kgs bombs inthe drop zone aiming for the bmp 2 two bmp2 was history even before they mirages started their turn back for a straffing run and started with thier defa cannon ploughing up the earth in a straight line a few paras slow enough not get out of the was were dead before they touched down and the mirages climbed once again for a re run as the wing tips of the flankers flashed angry red and two r-73s came in like a demon from hell blowing of the hot gun pod of the first mirage along with most its port wing and the second mirage turned quickly out of harms way and dove for the deck with a stream of flares in its wake - the sukhoi closed in almost in straight line from the fleeing mirage like a shark and opened up with its gasha above the cockpit ,amrik could actually see the bright brass sheels being spewed out of the ejector assembly as the sheel slapped into filmsy airframe of the pakistani aircraft from tail to head and the crash of the aircraft into ground few kms down the line . A column of smoke to show where the predator has met its end was all there left to see after a few minutes. Colonel amrik raised his fingers in a V at the sukhoi pilot who did a snap roll to celebrate his victory and then went up to his patrol position

KHUSAB 40 MW PRESSURISED HEAVY WATER REACTOR -0530 HRS

It was a normal day in the control room of pakistans second nuclear reactor for Dr Iftikar as he glanced over the bank of monitors .All systemes were normal which included steam pressure , neutron flux ,reactor core temperature ,coolant cum moderator flow in the reactor core etc. Another 30 minutes to go before he would be able t hand over the charge of this ultra sensitive system very criticial to nations strategic defense to his collegue when the air raid sirens started wailing at full blast

This chinese aided plant built at an estimated cost of 31 billion rupees is pakistans second comercial nuclear plant the first being karachi nuclear power plant . The associated plutonium production and tritium generation facility is considered the core of pakistans effort to build advanced light weight compact warhead for its korean missiles. Prior to khasab pakistan entire need of enriched uranium was met from kahuta . Though the plutonium production capacity of khusab was never known accurately atleast it was enough to make 1-4 weapons per year which translates to baout 75-80 kgs of weapons grade plutonium per annum.

Negotiations for this chinese assisted plant started as early as 1989 under the premiership of benazir bhutto and was finalised during nawaz sharifs first term. Construction started at chasm located on the left bank of indus river about 30 kms south of minawali in punjab in 1992. The cooling water required for the reactor is taken from chasma -jhelum link canal and warm water discharged into indus river.Some say it is an exact replica of chinese quinsan nuclear power plant. However it has been reported that china in its own case imported all the critical components like large pressure vessels,control systems and coolant circulation pumps from japan,france and germany respectively .However for pakistan due to enforcement of pressler ammendment and strong pressure fom us western countries refused to supply anything as a ressult of which all components in khusab are essentally chinese -throwing a shadow of doubt on thier reliability and safety in the long run .

The anti aircraft arty opened up in unison as the araea defense radars spotted the large b-52s some way out ,but is was an useless gesture as at 25000plus feet altitude they were well away and out of thier range .THE Croatle 3000 system powered up automatically and the launchers swivelled out onthier mount to meet this threat . The curtain of tracers thrown up by almost a hundred radar controled guns were truelu an impressive sight but apart from a gallant show of defiance did nothing as the whistle of laser guided bombs falling on targets drowned out everthing . First to go was the experimantal heavy water cum tritium extraction plant next was the power reactors control room in underground shelter ,the third 2000 kg bomb took made the reactor dome colapse upon itself shutting out any possibility of producing plutonium from this reactor for good ,the 4th one hit the coolant pump building converting the multi million dollar irrepalcable high capacity high pressure pumps used to cool the reactor core and extarct fission heat into a mass of scrap metal .No one would know for sure why a couple of 1000 kg bombs were dropped on the residential compound housing the pakisatni nuclear scientists whether it was an acciedent or some secret instructions were with the b-52 flight group but the ressult was horrific almost 60 percent of pakstans top weapon scientists and engineers were dead in the early morning hours the rest too shaken by the incident and may not be able to work again .

Strangely no interceptors came up to challenge the flight maybe they were conserving them or maybe deployed else where or maybe knew the futility of fighting it out with sukhois whatever be the reason the destruction of khusab with such ease will always be discussed in the IAF pilots mess for years to come

INDIAN ARMY BRIDGE HEAD - 5 KMS SOUTH EAST OF KAHUTA -0600HRS

Colonel amrik singh at his troops assembling up after rather a rush drop over rock strewn landscape fortumately few of the injuries were serious which were being taken care of by brigade medics in a small poratble first aid centre set up in one corner of the drop zone . The 18 BMP 2 were getting quickly loaded up and the NAG anti tank guided missiles launcheres fixed along the main turret . His command vehicle was already ready and radioman sudhir was setting up data exchange protocols with the orbiting phalcon and command headquarters . Following the golden rule of infantry combat a defensive perimeter around the newly formed bridge head was already shaping up in form of 3 ft deep ditch with razor wire protection and themedium machine guns were placed facing the main road to kahuata from rawal pindi from where the first attack was expected . The phalcon has reported presence of several clsoe to 26 t-55 in the near by pakistani cantinment responsible for security of kahuat complex . His air support was expected anytime and the day was just starting up .

His basic attack plan was to draw out the pakistani armour and heavy defenses away from the easily defended cantonments into the open road where IAF s unmatched superiority will help turn the battle in their favour .
To draw out the enemy he has already despatched asmall group of his crack commandos to do some nice sabotaging at the nearby pakistani army diesel depot and rest he hoped should follow as per his plan .

Capt vijay engaged the 4 wheel drive of his gypsy as he and 3 of his comrade in arms took the direct cross country route to the nearby comparitively large oil and diesel farm as indiacted in his laptops monitor and position of pakistani protecting vehicles constantly updated from phalcons synthetic aperture radar every 5 seconds in form of a digital photo in somewhat unnatural colours. They were carrying between them 2 RPGs and several packets of RDX with remote radio detonators . All of them for this mission were carrying silenced Uzi s and hi power 9mm berreta side arm and ofcourse the long bladed hunting knife honed to razors edge .

The indian para landing has notgone unnoticed though done in the confusion of incomming dawn . Locals have called in the policestation and a vigorous armed response was in the offing as soon as the exact position of indian bridge head becam known to local brigade commander .The rumble of 12 t-55 s starting their heavy diesel engines filled the sky and the screech of their tracks as they started to roll the 50 ton monster was painful even to those whose job was to ride it when
first of the 100 000 ltrs diesel tank blew up in the distance followed in quick sucession by three others . The light gypsies could not be seen at that distance but atleast it gave the pakisatni commanders some target to fire upon as ordered his tank to reposition and engage yet unseen enemy somewhere in the distance

- Fire and the 12 main guns roared in unison sending a volley of high explossive anti tank shells into estimated vicinity of the burning tanks were the indian kafers were suspected to be .

Vijay has left the area infact 5 minutes back and retraced his path to where the rough country road intersects the main road leading to the drop zone .They were lying in wait for the pakisatni t-55s to come with range of their RPGs and shoulder fired version of Nag anti tank missile .Their brief was very simple create diversionary attack- immobilise incomming tank column by immobilising the first two or three tanks and then run back like hell to safety .



Lt colonel Pathan allowed his men to fire a few more voleys of high explossive sheels in the vicinity of tank farm before realising the main threat is else where as turned his column onthe main road and towards the indian army bridgehead .

Sq leader dhilon quickly brought his mig 27 into new heading and lost altitude first intercepting the kahuat road and then flying barely 500 ft over it as he cut power - deplyed airbrakes for a brief period and then changed his wing sweep from 72 degree to 16 degree as his right hand selected the inner wing pylons each holding 36 57 mm unguided rockets wired to be fired in salvos of 4 and hopefuly if his aim is correct no tank can survive that punishment but it would be better if the tanks are stationary .Behind him 5 other floggeres formed up on a single line at 100 ft vertical seperation for a classic head on rocket attack.

On the ground captain Vijay waited with all the patience of a puff adder on the dry river beds of africa for the victim to make its appearence . His shoulder fired imaging infrared seeker head guided nag missile was already humming inhis ears begging tobe release but he waited till the distance of the lead tank was less than 2 kms when he stood up took one more careful aim and pressed the trigger . The small missile leapt of the launcher and sped off to the distant tank in a serpentine flight profile as the seeker head in its nose adjusted its flight profile continiously always centred on the hot engine of the lead t- 55 and at 200 ft from the doomed tank it went vertical for a text book top attack mode punching into the thin top armour and then expoding inside the turret blowing it up and away . The stored ammo went up next in sympathetic detonation and finally the fuel tank in the rear covering area in thick black oily smoke .
The second t-55 bravely tried to cross his commanding officers tank from right and take up the lead thru the pall of thick black oily smoke as his gunner opened up with the co axial heavy machine gun on the location of the indian commandos who has already dived intoa nearby ditch but thier gypsy took the brunt and blew up like a nice firecracker .Lt ajoy was in themeantime up and aiming at the second tank steering out of the mess and others following thru the gap so created . As he fired the missile the volley of haevy machine gun bulet caught himsquare in the cheat and threw him 20ft away intoa dry nullah most his chest and abdomen ripped apart by the blast and he died like that few minutes later .

The road was now blocked for some time and the 3 rd tank strted heaving the two damaged t-55s out of the way when the floggeres came screaming in .

At 650 kms indicated air speed the lead mig 27 came in and launched its rocket salvo folowed in quick sucession by other five . Missing a stationary target at that range was impossible and the mig pilots did not even attempt to do the impossible .This is the specific role for which they were designed and built and this is the role in which they excelled under all conditions . After the first attack run they climbed away and this time came supersoni with wings tucked back like birds of prey and launched their second salvo went up and came back again to finish off any remaining -althat remained were the burning hulks of a dozen t-55s and in some distance the body of lt Ajoy who thru an act of supreme sacrifice made this all possible .

The cost of 40 m for predators is a little bit on the higher side..It was around 20m if i remember correctly..

This is something that I wrote sometime ago, as a scene in a hypothetical war between India and Pakistan around 2020. I don't know if it will fit in well with this thread, but if you like it and can send me some suggestions, I can rewrite it to fit.

The day began as with any other for the men and women of the Indian Air Force's No.15 squadron, nicknamed 'The Flying Lances'. Their base in Western Rajasthan, was not particularly a busy one, mainly being intended as a forward airbase in case of a conflict. Not being a full-fledged base, the creature comforts were limited. In fact the only reason that the airbase was in use was because the squadron had taken part in a joint exercise with the Army. The squadron was equipped with MiG-21-93s. This was an upgraded version of the venerable MiG-21 of 1960's vintage.

Since the MiG-21 was not a 'top-of-the-line' aircraft, most of the squadron's pilots were youngsters, with several of them fresh out of basic flight training. One of these young pilots was Flight Lieutenant Aniruddha Chibb. Today he was trying to stay awake as he sipped his third mug of black coffee in the Alert tent. He, along with his friend Flight Lieutenant Oliver Pinto were on 'Alert Five' duty and had been awake since midnight. This meant that they had to be in the air within five minutes of receiving the order to take-off. Their two aircraft were barely fifty feet away and Chibb could see the maintenance techs huddling around the dim light of a portable fluorescent lamp. In the dim pre-dawn light he was just able to make out the lights coming on in the mess kitchens as the cooks prepared to make breakfast for six hundred hungry men. His bladder was beginning to protest at the amount of coffee he had drunk and he got up to go around behind the tent so that he could relieve himself. Regulations for Alert Five crew meant that he was not allowed to stray far from his aircraft while on duty. As Chibb left the tent he ran into Pinto, who had just returned from checking over the aircraft.

"Any luck yet?", asked Chibb. The radar on Pinto's aircraft had been acting erratically over the past few days. Two hours back it had completely failed and refused to function. Normally, they would have immediately exchanged the aircraft for another, but the increased tempo of operations over the past two weeks of exercises had left many aircraft in need of maintenance and virtually all the aircraft in the squadron were suffering from some breakdown or the other.

"Nope. No chance of getting it repaired on the line here. It'll have to wait until we get back home. I'm going to call in for another aircraft."
"No chance of that. I already spoke to the Crew Chief. Everything's down with something or the other. The only machine that's somewhat fit to fly is 2769, and that's got it's GPS down."

Pinto grimaced. The Global Positioning System was an essential component of the aircraft's navigation system. Although the upgraded MiG-21s also had a Inertial Navigation System installed, the squadron's INSs were largely out of commission due to spares shortages at this base. The lack of either a GPS or and INS would mean that the pilot would have to navigate by dead reckoning, which was extremely dangerous if flying in darkness.

By this time the Crew Chief had joined them, and Pinto turned to him and asked, "How long to swap a GPS unit from one machine to another?".

"We can do it in just under one hour, sir.", he replied.

"Never mind then. We'll be off alert within half an hour.", Pinto said, his face showing his displeasure at the situation.

With the retirement of the MiG-21 fleet looming ever closer, spares procurement for the type kept declining. As a result, the maintenance crews were forced to cannibalize parts from other aircraft. This meant that several aircraft had so many parts missing that they were unfit for any sort of flight, and remained 'Hangar Queens'.

Chibb and Pinto walked back over to the aircraft to see how the work on the radar was going on. The maintenance techs were just installing the radome back over the, now non-functional, radar. Even though the base was located in the desert, winter nights like this were extremely cold, which the light sweaters the crew wore did little to prevent and Air Force regulations prohibited the use of any sort of fire or sigdi near a fuelled aircraft. The two pilots began walking back to the tent.

Just then the tranquility of the early morning was shattered by a klaxon screaming it's warning across the base. Simultaneously, the pilots heard the panicked voice of the air traffic controller screaming for them to take-off. The two of them sprinted over the their aircraft and clambered over the ladders into the cockpits. Chibb began going over the checklist of procedures to follow before starting the fighter, even as one of the ground crew strapped him tightly into his seat and armed his ejection seat. He hurried through the checklist as fast as he dared, and finally started the turbojet engine behind him. The engine starter cart belched smoke as it forced compressed air into the turbine to get it moving so that the engine could produce it's own power. Chibb had one of the few working INSs in the squadron and he spooled up it's gyroscopes. As soon as it returned the 'all-ok' signal, he punched in his current location into the system from a set of coordinates painted on a board near the aircraft. He then switched on his radio and contacted the control tower.

"Tower, this is Alpha One. What's the situation?"

"We have multiple bogeys entering our airspace. Jodhpur reports heavy jamming and cruise missile attacks. Take-off immediately and proceed to a heading of 300, altitude 5,000 meters."

"Roger Tower."

As soon as all his instruments indicated that all the systems on the aircraft were functioning properly, he waved to the ground crew to remove the wheel chocks and then gradually increased power until he began to move. In spite of the urgency, he was careful not to overspeed as the danger of going off the asphalt of the taxiway and into the surrounding sand was only too real in the dim light. Pinto's MiG was right behind him as he aligned his fighter on the runway's centerline. They would be taking off singly as the light was too bad to risk a formation paired take-off, even though it would save some time. Chibb stood on the brakes as he increased the throttle putting the engine into full afterburner. The sound of the engine built up to a scream and the little fighter shuddered as the brakes struggled to hold it still. Then Chibb released the brakes and he was pushed back into his seat as the MiG shot forward towards the end of the runway which was still out of sight. Soon all that could be seen of him was the white-hot flame of his engine exhaust. He was followed soon after by Pinto who took off in an identical manner.

Chibb circled the airfield until he was joined by Pinto, and the two of them together headed north-west while still climbing to their assigned altitude of 5,000 meters. Chibb switched on his radar but it was not showing him anything at present and he had to depend upon the ground controller, who directed him over the radio.

"Alpha Flight, you have six bogeys inbound. Range 40 kilometers, bearing 290, heading 110."

"Roger Control. We're on our way."

The MiG-21 was notorious for it's poor range, which meant that Chibb and Pinto could theoretically carry up to four missiles. However, as the pilots joked, in such a configuration the MiG could do little more than take-off and circle the airfield once, before it was time to land. Today, the MiGs were carrying two each of fuel tanks and R-73 air to air missiles. This meant that they had four missiles between the two of them, while they were supposed to intercept six aircraft. When outnumbered, one has to be sneaky, which is exactly what Chibb planned to do. An aircraft with it's radar on can be detected by other aircraft much before it can detect them. Since he was getting target information from the ground controllers he switched off his radar, so that they would be unaware of his presence.
The ground controller soon informed him that he was within twenty five kilometers of the targets and approaching them from the side. The two pilots then armed their missiles. The R-73 is an infra-red guided missile. This means that it homes in on the heat emitted from the target. When he armed the missiles, nitrogen bottles located inside the weapon pylons began blowing compressed nitrogen over the missile's infra-red seekers located in the nose. In a matter of seconds, the seekers were chilled down to a temperature of -150°C. This extreme temperature difference between the seeker and the surrounding environment made it extremely sensitive to any heat-emitting object.

When they were within fifteen kilometers of the targets, Chibb finally switched on his radar and immediately saw the six Pakistani aircraft on his radar display. He selected targets for both his missiles and fired both of them, while Pinto fired at both of his targets. They were confident about the missile's shooting down the targets as they had fired the missiles at just over half of their maximum range and the missiles were within the optimum region of their envelope.

The Pakistani formation was tasked with the role of destroying one of the Indian airbases. Accordingly it was comprised of four Mirage 5 fighter/bombers armed with both unguided as well as laser-guided bombs. These Mirages were escorted by two F-7P 'Airbolt' fighters, which were Chinese built versions of the MiG-21. The F-7 flight leader was aware that he had been detected by ground radar and so had his own radar on and searching for any interceptors coming his way. However, since Chibb and Pinto approached him from the side with their radars off, they remained undetected until Chibb powered on his radar. Then the Pakistani cockpit was filled with warning signals screaming that there was a fighter radar close to him. The F-7's radar warning receiver could not tell him if any infra-red guided missiles had been fired, but he knew that he was well within the range of those fearsome R-73s which were sure to be heading his way. He shouted a warning over the radio to the other aircraft in the flight and they separated, with the Mirages continuing towards their target, while the F-7s turned toward the Indian MiGs.

The two teams of opponents were closing in with each other at a combined speed in excess of three thousand kilometers per hour. The Pakistanis had the advantage in terms of numbers, while the two Indian fighters had a slight superiority in terms of the range of their weapons. The Indian pilots fired their missiles when they were about ten kilometers away from their targets. By prior agreement, Chibb and Pinto fired a missile each at the F-7s while the other missile was fired at a Mirage.
The distinctive flash of the missile's rocket motors firing was not missed by the Pakistani pilots, who immediately began evasive maneuvers. They had to time these maneuvers accurately, because if they left it too late, the missiles would lock on to them and detonate, while performing the maneuvers too early would allow the missiles to correct their aim for a better shot. The two F-7s were flying in a direction perpendicular to that of the missiles, and when the incoming weapons were just seconds away, they released flares into the dark sky. The flares burned brightly, briefly turning the dark sky into bright day. The main aim behind launching the flares was to try and decoy the missiles heat-seeking guidance systems into following the heat of the flares rather than the hot exhausts of the jets. The plan almost worked, the lead Pakistani fighter was able to decoy the missile aimed at him, but his wingman was a fraction of a second too late in releasing flares and the missile ran true and exploded just ahead of the engine. The bright flash of the explosion was quickly followed by the flame of the pilot's ejection seat launching him out of the cockpit and preparing to deploy his parachute. The lead Pakistani quickly radioed his base with the location of the downed aircraft so that a search and rescue helicopter could pick him up before the Indians could. He then focused his attention to the Indian fighters that were closing in to within shooting distance.

In the meantime, the other two missiles had shot down two of the Mirages. Realizing that attempting an attack on an airbase with just two aircraft without any fighter support was suicidal, the surviving Mirages jettisoned their bombs and turned back to help their comrade in the F-7. The pilot in the F-7 was now in close combat with the two Indian fighters. Although he was armed with two Magic II heat-seeking missiles of his own, his evasive maneuvers had prevented him from trying for a shot with them. He was now trying to get one of the Indian MiGs within his gunsight so that he could shoot a missile up it's tailpipe. At the same time he had lost track of it's wingman, and had to constantly glance at his rear-view mirror to check if it was sneaking up on him. Unfortunately, Pinto who was in the second MiG was not behind him, but to the side and had the Pakistani fighter in his gunsight. After adjusting his aim for the motion of the F-7, he let loose a barrage of 23mm cannon shells from the MiG's internal gun, which shredded the right wing of the F-7, sending it cartwheeling into the ground.

Chibb's radar showed the incoming Mirages, and while he wanted nothing more than to tangle with them, he was also acutely aware that both Pinto and he were running low on fuel and would soon need to return to base. The combat so far had involved a fair use of afterburners which had severely depleted their fuel reserves. On his order, both of them turned back to base, all the while cursing their fighter's lack of a decent fuel capacity and the lack of an in-flight refueling capability. Ground control informed them that the Mirages were still on their tails, but were not really a concern as they were too far away to launch their own missiles. The Pakistanis seemed to realize this too as they too turned west back into Pakistan.

well since u have placed the secnario in 2020 dont u think tht the IAF would have already phased out the Mig21's. Any ways nice secnario though keep it going. :)

Nice Scenario.But the Mig 21's would be better of replaced by the LCA.

Thanks for the feedback. I wanted to write a scenario featuring the 'blunt end of the spear' :) , which is why I based it around a set of MiG-21's approaching the end of their useful lives, and the problems associated with flying in a squadron equipped with aircraft facing retirement just around the corner.

Colonel Amrik took off the the shoulder fired nag anti tank missile launcher and the ruck sack containing 2 more reloads from the still warm body of his junior officer and he did not even bothe rto hide the tears . But that was for a few minutes and then the advance party was back to its commited self once again. Thge death of a brave young officer only strengthened their resolve to achieve the objective at any cost and the quickly re grouped for the next attack which they knew will surely come in a matter of hours ,The pakistanis were not going to give up so quickly even if the loss of their ground defense capability was erroded very effectively in the last few hours .

The development of the Nag anti tank missile though started long back work on a lighter shoulder fired version was felt firat during kargil crisis when soldiers on foot did not have an effective bunker busting weapon at close range except some old russain anti tank missiles in the inventory . Once the basic propulsion and guidance technology was proven in standard size units incorporating imaging infra red seeker head and found to be very accurate by the armoured corps brass during extensive trial at ahmednagar -the proposal for a shoulder fired version was mooted . To save weight the booster size was much reduced making it possible to manufacture a smaller missile easy to carry by infantry which couple with use of titanium alloy re usable launcher tubes made the the shoulder fired nag a truely infantry support weapon and this was its first combat use .While not much secrecy was practiced during the development phase of the project all trials being easily camafalged as standard user trials with occassional snide reports inthe media about too many trials for a small missile the ressults ultimately attained both objectives - 1) secrecy thru openness and 2) an user friendly weapon system against which army didnot have any objection infact they opened a revolving letter of credit for continious supply of so many launchers and missiles evry year for next 5 yrs to start with . The nett ressult was apart from agni and prithvi nag was the first of the small sized missiles to become operational from druva,bmp 2 and the lighter shoulder fired ones issued only to sp ops units in active combat. The shoulder fired nag had much reduced effective range of 2 kms compared to more than 6 kms for the standard bmp2 chasis mounted ones or those loaded onto 2x4 launcheres of Dhruvs much like hellfires are on apaches except nags had a day noght top attack capability and did not need some one to illuminate the target before launch -a true fire and forget 3rd generation anti armour/bunker weapon system

Kareen khan looked at the ground defense plans of kahuta and tried to comprehend indian gameplan and its ultimate objective .He was in fact totaly caught in the wrong foot by this super fast air-land strike which included a highly risky air drop of a full brigade innear darkness .Ofcourse the blessed indians with their overwhelming air superiority and better pilot training particularly in the air to ground role made things a bit easy for them and the heavy strikes by USAF his supposedly close ally on the nuclear establishments made things more painful . But he was a soldier and a special ops personnel at that .He knew what it is to be under heavy shelling and massive aerial bombardment -problem was he no longer had that kind of air power only 2 reserve squadrons of mirage 5 loaned by was available for immediate strike mission . He did know about the sukhois but they were already returning to rearm and indian migs were the only air defense platform availble to the awacs commander for the time being . It was a good time to draw some indian blood thought he as he picked up the secured phone to air commodore elahi in one of the satelite airbases surrounding Multan and spoke for a few minutes .

IAF STATION MAHARAJPURA -GWALIOR 0630 hrs

Invisible to prowling satelites and all transmission off with data link to phalcon 1 on standby mode the two squadrons of Mirage H s were waiting ,fuly armed with mica and r-73 s unlike kargil this time they were configured for air to air combat and only 30% of them were loaded up with centreline 1000 kg laser guided bombs and 4 of them with 2000 kgs runway denial durandal bombs . They were all fuelled up and the young pilots were nearby all suited up patiently discussing one more time the attack profile and combat deployment when called in not if .The sky over the massive air base was crystal clear and except the 4 mirages on cap were ready to deliver death at few minutes notice when the data link from phalcon came alive .As the letters streamed out automatically decodeed at the air commodore s office the technicians hooked up the strter carts and the pilots checked their g suit staps one last time and climbed into the cockpit .

PAF BASE RAFIQUI -0700 HRS

Air commodore Faisal put down the phone and mopped his brows .It was a direct order from the commander in chief and he was to commit all of his 36 Mirage 5 s to combat in a ground support role to eliminate the indian army bridgehead last reported less than 4 kms from the kahuta nuclear weapons complex . He was told to launch the first strike mission within 1 hrs and sucessive sorties every 30 minutes with at least 6 aircraft formation . While he did not agree to commander in chief Kareen khans strike plan since that would leave the base vulnerable to surprise strike during aircraft launch and recovery over extended duration it would also force him to refuel the aircrafts in the open to maintain the sortie rate desired and force him to use to much radio trafic to manitain the launch strike and recovery co ordination. Also it will leave the heavy water facility nearby dangerously open for a decapacitating high altitude strike .

But in air force you are not paid to discuss and definitely not in PAF where any kind of disagreement had only one end - a hole in the ground 6 inches more than your height and no pension for your family .Air commodore faisal did not much relish that prospect and so decided with lot of reservation to hold an emmergency mission brief to be followed by launching the first dedicated ground strike at kahuta in an hours time . Uploading of all the air to ground dumb bombs and clusters will take atleast one hour and then the fuelling another 15 minutes so the first flight was not likely to take off before 0900 hrs .

PAF Rafiqui was a direct outcome of 1965s brief and some what inconclussive air war which made construction of an alternate main base to sargodha imperative . As early as 1966 approxiamtely 140 kms north east of historic city of Multan shorkot village was finally selected for this purpose and named after a legendary pakistani pilot SA Rafiqui . The first commander of this spanking new ultra modern base Group captain zaheer hussain and the first sucess of its multi tiered air defense ssytem came within 3 months when an IAF su-7 was shot down over the runway during 71 war . Even after 71 the expansion and upgradatio of base infrastructure continued which included addition of both underground and overground fuel storage system with automated fire suppressor , incorporation of croatle 4000 surface to air missile system ,a large housing facility for the base personnel and their families including a cinema hall and shopping mall . The PAF personnel also planted a large number of trees mainly to camaflage the croatle launchers and the anti air craft guns but soon the tree plantation programme gained momentum and soon became an eco drive show case of pakistani air force.The surrounding dessert receded and the base became a luxery posting for the PAF .

The primary responsibility of this base is air defense of Multan city - one of the oldest human habitat in the indian sub continent and act as launching point of manned /missile strike against indian targets in the event of sargodha becomming in opertive for some reason. The pakistani nuclear weapons programme was initiated by then president zulfiqar ali bhutto in multan in 1972 during a high level meeting with a team of scientists and engineers led by none other than AQ KHAN .

On the outskirts of densely populated multan city is the 13 ton per year capacity heavy water plant purchased from belgium in early 1980s .Co located with adjoining pak-arab fertiliser plant which allows the heavy water plant with almost unlimited quantity of normal hydrogen in a closed loop from which the heavy hydrogen or deuterium is most t likely seperated by gaseous diffusion method and the lighter or normal hydrogen is returned to the fertiliser factory for production of urea.

Also in a nearby hilly location indian air force mig 25s did photograph M-11 missile launchers for a short period but later on was not seen most likely moved to their designated underground silos .

The early morning pass of IRS 3C over Multan took several ultra high resolution photographs of assembled staff cars near the base commanders office and also the large number of fuel browsers filling up at the nearby fuel tank farm . It also did photograph almost double the number of airforce security jeeps on the perimeter road . It was down linked direct to air head quarters and to phalcon 1 and was in hand of air commodore bhasi within an hour . One look at the changed configuration and for the senior combat pilot the meaning was obvious . The special forces were in grave danger - the planned pakistani strike should not be allowed to leave ground at any cost and he conencted to base commander gwalior on his encrypted datalink channel .

Group captain Bhisma looked at the data being typed out in the high speed printer in the base commanders office and decided to split his options . His first option was of course to throw all his mirages in a protective umbrela over kahuat to protect the indo-american task force on ground option two was to take on the pakistanis before they could stage a massed take off for kahuta this was obviously a better option but time was not on their side .Most of the mirages were already armed for air to air combat mode and then to change over their armament package to air to ground ammo at least on most of the pylons would take time atleast an hour for a six aircraft strike formation .And finally no one knew for sure what was the pakistani target it can well be delhi or this base itself so only a strike before launch will take care of all evantualities .

He went for a spit decision 12 of the mirage 2000 s to leave immediately as they are with air to air for area defense over task force at kahuta

the rest will change over to air to ground mode and the first 12 of these will also scramble immediately and go for a direct strike at base infrastructure including the main runway intersection and fuel tank farm .

The balance will be armed with standard air to ground ammo like 500 kg bombs in multiple rack and 300 rounds for the twin defa cannon suitable for eiether close air suport at kahuat or ground strike at Rafiqui as the situation may demand .On reciept of clearence from air commodore he forwarded the ops plan thru secured data link to air commodore bhasin on board phalcon .The clearence came within 5 minutes with the assurance that some of the sukhois still refuelling at jasalmir will be armed with air to ground missiles and shall be deployed over kahuta in about 30 minutes .

scramble-scramble -scramble blared the mechanical computer synthesised voice as the air tarfic controller pushed the red button on his left hand console and the first batch of 12 pilots headed for their already fuelled aicraft in a dead run trying their best to keep the oxygen demand valve and hose from hitting thier nose as then ran at an oblique angle towards the aircraft in individual hard shelters

INDIAN US ARMY BRIDGE HEAD -3.8 KMS FROM KAHUTA PERIMETER WALL-0730 HRS

Colonel amrik singh was gettingreal mad , a dozen or more pakistani tanks have opened up with their high expossive rounds on the very slowly advancing indo american special forces column and very quickly the special op mission was turning into a conventional infantry assault with the basic difference that they were not having the usal numerical advantage nor the arty support . The air force guys were doing their best but that was according to him not good enough . Already there were sevearl fatalities and casvac missions were impossible till those bloody guns and tanks are silenced .The pakistani t-55s were placed behind a 100 mtrs wide tripple barbed wire fence which obviously was sowed with anti personnel mines and exposing his bmp2 to this fire would be little better than suicide . For the last 5 minutes he has marked on his laptop al the position of the pakistani t-55 firing the comparitively less dangerous 100 mm shells and atleast 4 t-80s firing off their much more damaging 125 mm shells making the road ahead almost resemble the surface of the moon. The last 2 kms around the kahuata complex was was had no vegetation and no cover whatsoever -those tanks had to be silenced if this mission is to suceed was obvious and to his mind he could think of only one aircraft that can do this precisely and assuredly -the mig 27 flogger as he connected to phalcon 1 and passed on his air support requirement along with the so far located position of the enemy tanks and possibly some 130 mm field guns .

IAF STATION - SRINAGAR -0730 hrs

The battle scarred mig 27s landed one by one and quickly directed to the designated shelters along side the runway and the pilots took off their sweat streaked helmets and flight suites when they were surprised to see the arming dolleys with a fresh load of rockets and 250 kg bombs waiting in the side lines .As they came put of the cockpit and flopped on the cane chairs next to the aircraft after maing a short visit to the loos the base comanders gypsy screeched to a halt and he was very appologetic when he mentioned the need for a restrike as early as possible which meant by 0900 hrs over target and a short 30 minutes break for the pilots as their aircraft gets rearmed and refuelled .The mission debrief could wait he said -more important are those guys getting the hell from pakistani guns they cannot survive for long unless something is done about the second ecleon of tanks playing havoc in broad daylight

No one knows really what happened next but the phalcon comander was really surprised when his radio chattered to life

- phalcon 1 -moscow 28 - 5000ft-520 knots and climbing request target vector -over
- moscow 28-appreciate your quick turn around- turn right 310-make your altitude 1000 ft -expect mirage 2000 escort in 30 minutes over target - blast the b---- ds to hell -over and out

Twings changed sweeponce again to 45 degree as the mig 27s went supersonic over hostile air space and arrowed straight into combat .

Hi Shankar,

Fantastic writing, but here's some information that you might find intersting vis a vis US Special Forces:

I was just reading William Fowler's book on SAS "Behind Enemy Lines" and the main thing for the the SAS was to sneak in undetected and obviously in very small numbers (4 people in a team!).
Ofcourse the US Special Forces operate in large numbers and almost like infantry troops which is why SAS was not too happy operating with the Americans in Afganistan.

Another interesting tid bit from that book: In December 2001 when the SAS was working jointly with US Special Forces, "the US Commanders prevented the SAS from searching the caves in Tora Bora where it was believed that Osama Bin Laden was hiding. The American command wanted US Special Forces to do the job. By the time US Commanders had discussed the risks involved and what air cover was needed, Bin Laden and his Al Qaeda fighters had left!"

So in your future scenarios, the Americans may not exactly be very cooperative whilst working with the Indians :wink:

INDO AMERICAN SP FORCES FIRE BASE - 4 KMS FROM KAHUTA

Captain dilbag singh looked at the pair of 105 mm light indian field guns a few minutes to ready status.The barreles have been screwed into position and the wheels locked in position . Some distance away his dedicated support crews where breaking open the high explossive rounds out of wooden crates in which they have been air dropped and the bright brass casing glinted in the early morning sunlight when his tacnet came to life

- fire base alfa -request immediate fire supprt -grid co ordinate victor charlie -3 ranging rounds -follow with everythin you get-target tango 55/80 number estimated 12 in close formation -position siera
- hold on -support in 5 minutes

The barreles depressed to almost 30 degree to vertical as the guner incharge adjusted the firing angle to estimated range of just under 4 kms and fed in a marker round which will be firing a high explossive round but with orange smoke at the target for easy special forces spotter lying somewhere near the enemy tanks with a hand help vhf set to his ears and somewhat scared so that accurate ranging can be done .

The 105 m indian light field gun was developed essentially to meet the requirements of indian army in a variety of hostile environments from dessert to high mountain passes and has a stated range of just over 17 kms. Its low wt also make it possible for being air dropped with the troops for all kind of special ops where some heavy fire power is a pre requisite.

The first ranging shell exploded 100 mtrs to the forward and 30 mtrs to east of the lead T-80 which stopped immediately and traversed its 125 mm barrel around looking for the new source of danger .

- 100 mtrs back 30 mtrs west and the second shell was fired within a minute after nessecry barrel elevation was done .It hit the ground 1 mtr in front of the tank

- 1 mtr forward and fire for effect came the spotters cool assesment of the tac net .

Both the guns now opened up with a round every 100 second and in a deadly spread of 200 mtr by 300 mtrs kill box .The sky turned black as several of the t-55s caught fire almost immediately before they could reverse out of range .The t-80 were better off with their superior armour on top side and reactive explossive block protection they could move out of harms way into the open wheat fields behind . But not before the unnamed us sergent who was acting as arty spotter was torn up with ashort burst of 12.7 mm heavy machine gun fire and a few seconds later atangled bloody mess was all that remained of the brave amrican soldier .

3 out of 15 t-55 were the first casualty and as the rest backed into green cover of the wheat field and indian arty still clue less about their current location the advanced thermal imaging sights of lead t-80 found its target the hot smking barrels of the pair indian field guns and fired its 125 mm projectile into its centre .Dilbag singh did not have a clue as the heavy anti tank round slammed into the breach block of the left 105 mm gun and tore it into shreds throwing up a mass of secondary sharpnels one which took his head off cleanly as a sergeons scalpel .The second 125 mm shell hit the small 105 mm field ammo dump which went up with a resounding boom killing almso all of the guncrew and then the barrel traversed east trying to find a target and the lead bmp 2 came into view .

It was in this position the lead mig 27 found him smack in the centre of his infrared targeting system and the 57 mm rockets made no mistake as the first salvo of four hit the t-80 s top armour bore thryu and exploded ripping up the turret as the stored ammo started exploding . There was no survivors .The killing of capt dilbag sing was avenged in full and within few minutes but still there were a lot more to do .

PHALCON 1 SOMEWHERE OVER PATHANKOT -0730 HRS

Air commodore bhasin looked at the situations display was not happy at what he saw.6 mirages have already taken off from Rafiqui and heading towards kahuat battle zone at 600+ knots in tight v formation . The mig 27s have managed to neutralise the second echleon of t-55 /t-80s with no loss but almost at the end of their fuel reserve and needed to be taken off comabt immediately . The mirage flight of 12 aircraft from gwalior meant for interim air cover over ground troops at kahuta is stil 40 minutes out . The synthetic aperture radar console indiacted possible take off of another multi aircraft formation in few minutes no doubt for kahuta. .Condour flight was 10 minutes west of Multan heavy water plant and was the only option available for strike against rafiqui at the moment the american airforce general on board agreed and the orders started streaming out of the high speed encrypted data link .

Wing commander shahib looked back at his strike group of six mirage 3 all heavily armed with dumb bombs and rocket pods as he taxied out to the main runway 33 . The indian are crazy he thought planning such a daylight raid on the core of pakistans national defense identity .Now they will pay the price -he will make sure none of them go back alive as he reached the hammerhead and turned in to the main runway and clicked on the r/t switch for immediate take off clearence .

shahib could fel the cold sweat trcling down his arm pit -ther can be only one meaning to what was being said -they were under attack ,and he was right

The first JDAM sailed thru air flawlessly guided by the global positioning satelite up in the sky to hit the air trafic tower which disintegrated in amass of glass and cement and all radio transmisions were immediately cut off . The second one hit the main runway intersection and then the third the large fuel tanks total of 8 jdams were dropped which transalted to 16000 kgs of precisely delivered high explossive aimed to stop all air operations for atleast 6 hrs and the objective was met in a spectacular way .

Wing commander shahib took control off the situation and decided to take off regardless as went on interplane frequency

- harpoon flight - flight lead -take of immediately in sequence -now

and the six mirages some how managed to climb out thru the pock marked runway without any guidance from air trafic controller and climbed out to meet the aggressors .The only air to air weapons they had were the twin 30 mm DEFA cannons .

Two sukhoi 30 mkis deatched from the main escort group and turned south east switching onthier search radar s even before they have complete the short turn and the pilots came within visual identification range in a matter of minutes . six r-73s leapt of the rails and followed the ill fated mirages in a remorseless chase of death .The mirages had no realistic chance of escape at air speed of less than 350 knots and so close to ground no way they could avoid the super agile blunt nosed r-73s which took them out one by one in bright orange flashes with a muted explossive hush . Only wing commander shahib tried to turn to one of the incomming sukhois with a desperate turning climb as he opened up with his defa cannon at extreme range and was shoked to see the sukhoi climbing off vertically out of harms way loop back and then he saw the winking of its gasha over the pilots cockpit .Then blackness came swiftly.

INDO-US SPECIAL OP GROUP - OUTSIDE THE PERIMTER WALL KAHUTA

Colonel amrik singh peeped inside the outer wall into the nuclear weapin s complex thru his high magnification optical fibre based periscope the type usally used by tank comanders to look outside from within turret . The layout of kahutas inner defense was very neat and symmetrical but not very imaginative . The central command post was was at the centre with the medium machine gun posts spread out in a neat hexagon like the star of david with overlapping field of fire . Burnt out hulks of croatle missile launchers scattered all over bore testimony to effectiveness of the IAF s close air support and air defense suppression missions carried out an hour or so back . A clear strip of land 100 mtrs wide all around the outer perimeter wall confirmed presnce of a mine field .The directional ultra sonic motion sensors indiacted capability of automated mine detonation in the proximity of trespasser withou direct human intervention. Beyound the mine strip was a second perimter fence of coiled razor wire and beyond that reinforced concrete bunkers almost burried into ground could easily be made out . The paved road leading to the laboratory complex lay just beyond .

Amrik listed out the attack priroity

- neutralise bunkers - RCL guns
- scale wall - det chord demolition followed by rush with BMP 2s

while indian special forces will concentrate in penetrating the weapons and fissile material storage vault and recover the heavy stock to ground level when IAF heavy chopper were expected to do the needful of lifting them out to safety .

Major alex - rangers - bunker no 1, 2,3 with his group of 100 personnel and 4 javelin launchers in BMP2 s with standard Nag missiles for bunker busting duty .

Major Vivek - penetration of lab complex and securing fissile material vault - 100 personnel in gypsies with RCL guns and LMG s

major Tina - will be in charge of setting up and maintaining tactical communication between various units with her sat based com console and also keep frequen cy open to phalcon 1 for any emergency close air support from the rearmed sukhois/mirafges expected to be overhead any minute.


captain suresh with 75 lightly armed engineers will be responsible for braeking open the vaults and physically move the weapons out of underground locations and make them ready for immediate air lift as under slung load in thier original shipping containers.

The rest will stay with him just inside the inner wire fence and act as back up /exit cover and provide perimeter defense in case the pakistanis decide to counter attack with 120 mm /80 mm mortars and couple of BMP2 .

It was not a good plan but the best that he could think off at the moment and anyway it is often said the best of plan looks best only till the first contact with the enemy .

The crack of a mortar shell passing overhead made him jump into the nearest ditch and the mortar barrage from inside complex strted in earnest .

The penetration of kahuata complex on ground went off in typical special forces way very quick and very precisely ,casualities were somewhat heavy considereing the spirited pakistani defense but that could no way affect the final outcome

0800 hrs - the indian and us forces opened up with heavy mortar barrage for 15 minutes forcing evryone out in the open to take cover inside the reinforced bunkers

0815 hrs - all the bunkeres identified in course of last fifteen minutes fighting were hit with multiple rounds of anti armour rounds .

0820 hrs - it was a go all the way as the telescopic aluminium ladders were extended all the way over the partly defunt mine field and straight to the roof of bunkeres in its perimeter .

0821 hrs - the forces went with all guns blazing and then i was time for the grenades thrown into the bunkers thru the machine gun holes and the muffled crump to signify effective detonation inside . No one bothered to count the pakisatni dead but there were quite a few scattered amongst the just crossed minefield or on the aluminium brideges their bodies wrecked by heavy machine gun fire the flak jackets quite useless . The mediacs moved in to retrieve the bodies and find if some of them were still alive -there were none .

The forces then spread out fighting out the inner security cordon one by one . The security were comparitively lightly armed and in face of concerted assualt of full brigade of crack paras simply withered away and the access to the sanctum sanctum of pakistans strategic defense was now open to "international inspection and verification" for the first time .

DONKEY FLIGHT 6XMI26- 100 KMS SOUTH EAST OF KAHUTA -0830 HRS

Squadron leader ahuja pushed the collective forward and the giant helicopter pitched its nose down and started picking up air speed ,arranged in loose diamond formatio the other 5 chopers did the same without any radio transmission . Up above the multiple contrails of cu-30 mkis providing top cover in shape of eight was some reassurance because aprt from a big load of chaff and flares and a small ecm pod they did not have any defensive armament for this mission. Since this time the heavy loads will be under slung internal fuel tanks were added to increase its operating range but even with considerable internal fuel which ahuja expected to burn off by the time he reaches the target pick up zone there will not be much loiter time available and on return his fuel consumption will shoot up by more than 100 % and the available margins would be very very slim indeed .

The eight bladed 105 ft main rotor thumped air with reassuring regualrity and the penta bladed tail rotor tried its best to counter the torque generated in the main rotor from turning the chopper in the reverse direction which will be catastrophic .The whine of twinn 7460 kw or 10000 shaft horse power ZMKB progress D-136 engines was difficult to bear even within the highly sound proofed cockpit and the vibration to air frame was a nasty reminder to russain preference for performance at the cost of crew comfort .

Strangely for such a large helicopter the fuel consumption or more specifivally the specific fuel consumption that is fuel consumed for hauling one kg of underslung load is the best in the world. For example it will consume 1.5 ton of fuel for hauling a 20 ton load over 75 kms in 25 minutes and 6.5 ton of fuel for hauling a load of 20 ton over 400 kms in roughly 1 hr and 50 min . The max internal fuel like ahujas chopper was now at the moment it was having a range of just over 1600 kms subject to normal head wind and at 8000 ft over sea level the optimum flying altitude . The main fuel tank when filled up at pathankot held approximately 9.3 tons of fuel and the internal auxilary fuel tanks 11.48 tons . By the time it raeches the pick up zone it would have burnt off almost half of its internal auxilary fuel tank load and on return will be able to haul the heavy uranium canisters about 15 tons each back to pathankot without much difficulty . The capability of the chopper to fly with even one engine and with load (not full) at reduced speed made this an ideal vehicle for this operation. Apart from chaff flre dispensers the add on engine exhaust suppressor gave it some additional protection from heat seekers when picking up or dispensing load in combat zone.

Development of this giant started in 1970 s and first prototype flew in 1977 first display in 1981 paris air show and declared fully operational in 1983 first delivery to indian airforce in 1986 .Have been extensively used in siachin conflict and also in critical projects o classified nature where large long sections were to be moved to remote places in short notice .

The air intake of both engines are fitted with particle seperators to prevent foreign material ingestion and also equiped with electric bleed anti-icing systems for cold weather operation like in siachin glacier. Synchronised engine output allows constant rotor rpm and in one engine failure mode other engine utomatically goes to full rpm mode each engine having independent fuel systems . Two internal winches are used for both lifting the cargo inside the payload bay or carry it as underslung load.

This time the orange signal flare came up from the predicted pick up zone and the large chopper flared out to reduce speed and the engine whine markedly decreased as they colectively went for the quick pick up feeling somewhat naked in bright daylight but the contrails of escorting sukhois were still there and ahuja knew he would be safe

KAHUTA WEAPONS COMPLEX -O850 HRS

major vivek screeched to a halt outside the reinforced glass door of the main complex ,the security guards were already dead and as he rushed into the receptio area splattered with blood and unidentifiable body parts of dead soldiers the smart card operated access door to underground lab holding the ultar centrifuges and the weapons vault was still closed . While smashing thru the glass doors was not a big problem he was more worried about the locking up of the inner stel doors if forced access is attempted . As he took out the portable laser cutter from his rucksack and powered it on a thin stream of blood red laser shot out and started vaporising the glass in a neat line around the ultra secure locking system based on computer generated blimps fitting into exactly same dimension holes and with provision for self lock up in event the pass key and alpha numeric code not matching the manufacturers specs even once . Once he could put his hand inside and cut off the arming mechanism for auto lock rest was done with applomb -a short burst from insas 5.56 fired at point blank range and the first obstacle was open

The second access door took time since it was 2 inch thick stainless steel
and could not be cut open eiether with the low powered laser or conventional oxy acetylene torch -vivek spoke a few words in his throat mike ans capt nikhil of military engineers rushed in with a trolley mounted air plasma cutting set closely followed by lt thakur with a special non lubricayed instruement air compressor . The air plasma cutting unit operated on the basic principle of generating a stream of air plasma with a delicate copper electrode pwered by an ultra high frequency invertor genearting a ultra quick polarity changing current over the small stream of compressed oil and moisture free air and heating it to nearly 40000 degree centigrade before it hit the meatl to be cut .Suitable for use against stainless steel ,titanium and even copper and brass it is perhaps the most advanced metal cutting system available today .

The machine hummed as vivek quickly donned the welders goggles and pressed the hand switch precisely 50 mm from the meatl door to be cut a bright burst of ionised gas jetted out of the copper nozzle barely 1.2 mm across and literaly vaporised the stainless steel plate it came in contact with stil the thickness of the door made the process slow and all of 10 minutes it took to cut out a hole big enough for 2 persons with the hydraulic baggage lift to get across and they did that with haste rushing towards the active warhead storage and another group towards the cast plutonium /uranium meatl storage . A third group did not enter vault but simply started putting in 1 kg blocks of c-4 to critical support structures of the building .

The report on indian special forces breakthru at kahuta was on his desk and also a highly exagerated report on the extent of losses indian armed forces suffered in the hand of brave defenders .But kareen khan knew better ,he was fully aware of indian air forces power projection capabilities and always considered on such a possibility .One thing he was not quite prpared for was the loss of immediate launch capability thru intervention of some unmanned aerial vehicles firing air to surface guided missiles -indians did not have this capability ,he frowned at the thought of only nation which can do this and decided to to pay the debt in full -but first things first the indians must not be allowed to leave pakistani soil alive .

His first call was to rawalpindi arae commander and within 30 minutes a regiment of t-80s strted their engines and headed out of the catonment towards kahuta on the main road at full speed of 80 kms/hr ruining the well paved highway to ribbons .The second regiment was forming up and the third regiment was fuelled up . A total 180 t-80s a formidable armoured force was pushed out to throw ina ring of steel around pakistans premier nuclear weapons complex .

Their time to target 90 minutes and then kareen khan presumed not a single of the lightly armed indian troop will see the light of another day .No way they could fight out nearly 200 of one of the worlds best tanks and live to tell the tale .

He forgot the radar equipped il-76 up in the sky 250 kms to the south east which monitored his every move in a classic use of assymetric warfare . The controller on synthetic apperture radar terminal immediately brought the formation of tanks moving out of cantonment and thier speed and also estimated contact time with indian troops on ground . The alert went out immediately and one by one the counter force swung into position

The thunder of mig 29k s taking of with full air to ground load filled the sky as one by one the twin tailed jets took off northwards against astiff head wind -refuelled with the orbiting midas and dove to deck towards rawalpindi

a total of 16 jets were launched in about 20 minutes .Each carrying 2 rocket pods of 36 rockets each and 2 r-73s along with 150 rounds in its gasha 30 .

12 Sea harriers took off ina space of 15 minutes -refuelled and followed the fulcrums into combat equipped essentially with 57 mm unguided rockets and 2 derby missiles each for self defense

First the f-14s were launched ,6 of them to protect all the carriers launching aircraft

The 24 hornets took off with a time interval of less than one minute ,refueled with IAF midas and then lit thier afterburner so as not to miss the action

12 F-18s were launched in sedquence and headed towarsd rawalpindi ,armed with maverick missiles and usal complement fo sidewinders and amraams .

The pakisatni tanks were doomed even before they stepped out of thier cantonments gate .

USN currently has only 2 operational F-14 squadrons, VF-31 Tomcatters and VF-213 Black Lions, both scheduled to switch to Super Hornets on Oct 2006. So F/A-18E or F/A-18F would be more realestic.

SPECIAL FORCE DETACHMENT INSIDE NUCLEAR WEAPONS VAULT

Major Vivek looke at the racks lining the concrete vault with 2 inch thick lead lining in awe . each ready to use fission warhead was carefully stored in its custom made craddle of ployurethene foam supprted by steel brackets inside a 3 inch thick wooden crate . Top surface of the weapons housed the access panel used for dis arming the self destruct switches and various triggeres which would have to be armed and set off in correct sequence for the weapon to explode .His brief was to safe the weapons before removal and the 5 rows of 7 weapons each vault he would have to do it in less than 30 minutes so that a neat pick up can be done by the mi 26s without too much cut on operatioanl flexibility .

A quick look showed 33 of the 35 weapons were any case not assembled for immeduate use since theie fissile core of highly enriched y=uranium 235 and in 3 cases highly toxic plutonium 239 were stored seperately in an adjoning lead lined stainless steel box and he first moved out the cores for extarction . Then he started the most dangerous job of his carrer and may be his life as he approached to disarm the first of 3 ready to use nuclear warheads with barely few days training he had at BARC before this mission was initiated . On his shoulder was us army nuke expert lt colonel bruce but his experience was limited to warheads for perishing 2 s which was far different from the chinese designs used in these bombs .

Vivek could feel the cold sweat trickling down the armpit as he opened the access hatch and searched first for the power pack which would in realuse situation power up the whole arming circuitry and at the correct time generate enough current for the krytron switches to ignite the conventinal explossive lenses which in its turn would compress the neatlt machined hemispheres of plutonium ,each having approximately 65% of the critical mass of 16.7 kgs into a single sphere of supercritical mass and the self sustaining chain reaction would initiate cuminating in a nuclear explossion of roughly equivalent to 25000 tons of tnt.

But the process will not take place unless several breakers or safeties in the circuit close like the radio altimeter based contactor , the acelerometer which would allow the fring circuit to arm only if the acceleartion or rather the negative acceleartion of the weapon system matches that expected after detachment from a rocket nose cone or an aircraft during medium altitude lob toss delivery,the basic authentication code entered eiether thru data bus of weapon pylon from the rockets flight computer or mannualy at ground before launch and a few others .

The power pack was comparitively easy to find -located just behind the the main access panel and the long life rechagable nickel cadmium power pack he quickly removed and then followed the lead from powerpack to the radio altimeter switch located right at the tip of the nose cone careful not to disturm the high explossive lenses ,down again to the accelerometer switch embeded to the side of the carbon composite warhead .Now he could breadth a lot easier -as much as you can wen sitting next to an explossive power equivalent to 25000 000 kgs of conventional explossive . Vivek was a typical army guy ,he didnot bother counting the zeros or what that implies for him 25 kgs of high explossive was good enough reason to be careful .

As he removed one by one the petal shaped explossive lenses which surround the twing hemispheres of putonium he didnot bother removing the embeded detonators with wires leading out to the krytron switch which allows the electrical impulse to flow into each detonator at exactly the same time ressultingin compression of radioactive mass to several 100 times atmospheric pressure simply because he did not know how to do it well and was also not sure if doing so he might in adverantly trigger off the explossion .

The plutonium core felt warm even thru his protective goves as he slowly seperated the half cores and palced the hemispheres quite heavy for its size next to others already assembled for transportation to ground ,inside his helmet his almost bald skull was bathed in sweat andhis hands shook as the enormity of what he has done hit him . But then there was no time to loose as he approached the next weapon -this one a smaller free fall parachute retarded bomb of even polder design and once again started the deadly process .

This time his american collegue was more useful with his vast exposure to free fall nuclear bombs the designs of which were stolen by the chinese from archives of os alamos national laboratory in early 70 s and converted to design which ultimately reached pakistani hands . Half way thru the process of making it safe for transport -the ground itself started shaking as above them the massed t-80s opened up with a massed barrage of 125 mm shells .

PAKISTANI ARMOUR COLUMN 180 X T-80 MBT RAWALPINDI-KAHUTA

Brigadier Habib ooked back from the turret of his command tank at the mass of nearly 200 shiny new main battle tanks streched to almost 2 kms neatly spaced out along the motorway. He has decided to to take the main road instead of comparotively shorter cross country route essentially to save his tanks from excessive tarck wire and more importantly save on time and fuel since the t-80 main engine burnt diesel at prodigal rate on cross country routing. .Just in front of him was one of the longest river bridges which he has to cross slowly even though certified to carry the heavy tanks by the road authorities habib always took special care of his tanks and intended to show the commander in chief kareen khan what a well organised armour assault could do to a brigade of special forces caught in the open .

The first lot of 84 t-80ud version was procured by pakistan in 2004 followed by a fresh batch of another 200 when indian army started inducting some what better armed t-90s in large numbers as their frontline equipment .

T-80UD is perhapsone of the most heavily armed tanks in in service today ,apart from the 125 mm smooth bore main gun fully automated with thermal sleeve and capable of firing 6-8 rounds per minute over a very accurate trajectory aided by its ballistics computer. The system is specifically designed to take tanks with explossive reactive armour and even low flying attack helicopters and slowspeed aircraft .Also the AT11 SNIPER anti tank guided missile system with a declassified range of more than 4 km and as close as 100 mtrs makes it a very formidable system indeed . All standard tank ammo can be used like armour piercing ,armour piercing fin stabilised discarding sabot,high explossive anti tank and also the high explossive fragmentation type .

Today most of the tanks guns were loaded with high explossive fragmentation shells which was likely to play havoc with the special forces arrayed aginst it in an open landscape.

As the command tank of brigadier habib approached the road bridge he instructed his driver to slow down to 10 km/hr and also ordered the followingtanks to cross one at a time so that the chances of resonance in the bridge structure is miniumum . As he entered the bridge his next order made the heavy tank slowly accelerate to 15 kms per hour as its 1250 hp gas turbine engine hummed in to generate the nessecery acceleartion without much effort and thw palnery power transmission system actuated by hydraulic servo system translated that extra effort into faster linear motion of armoured monster without a hitch .

The network of small rivers and canals that surround kahuta made it obligatory for any tank comander to use the main roads atleast for part of his routing and brigadier habib saw his long compact column break up into smaller sub columns of 20-25 tanks each as they approached the culverts and bridges and began the slow tediuos process of crossing them one at a time .

All in all it was very well protected in a normal conventional war when tank fights tank and infantry fight infantry days on end .

Unknown to brigadier habib or his superiors the rules of the game has changed in the last decade first demonstrated in gulf war 1 then more conclussively ingulf war 2 and to a lesser extent in kargil the days of world war 2 like wars was finally over. All the massive fire power in his heavy tanks will be proved useless against a concerted attack from air choreographed by a modified transport aircraft housing a wide variety of electronoc processors and radio signal generators . Habib should have been a more avid student of modern warfare particularly gulf war 1 and would have known what fate awaits massed armour and their tanker supprt when caught in the open ,but then he never had much time for such accademic pursuits -hard routine work followed by hard nocturnal activities in true pakisatni army style took away all his time .

This time he will have to pay the price for not keeping up to date -pay it with blood of his officers and men who depended on him to take them to victory . Death was in the air -just a few minutes away

Brigadier habib had one last look at the winding road down the low hills that surround the kahuat complex before commiting his armour to battle .As he ordered the column forward at max possible speed down the winding access road to kahuta he could make out the scattered assault formation of indian armoured personel ccarriers on the distant horizon -no doubt equipped with russian and some indian anti tank missiles and msot of the special forces personnel busy uploading the heavy weapn canisters to the underslung bucket of the very large mi 26s hovering barely 50ft above ground .He was sure he could with his fully computersied fire control system bringing down those heavy choppers will not be much problem and that will end the stupid indian plan of stealing pakisatni nuclear weapons in broad daylight . The sky filled with thick diesel smoke as one by one the first regiment of t-80s entered the snake like road with screeching tarcks and shrill whine of gas turbine drivers on almost full power as they entered the down gradient on low gear .

Group captain Surinder khanna watched over the instrument cluster one more time as hurtled thru space at 5000 ft towarsd kahuta ,his missio brief was simple protec the special forces from ground assault at any cost and he checked his weapon status on the multi function dispaly which showed the 2x1000 kg lgbs + plus full load on twin 57 mm rocket pods on the inner wing pylons and ofcourse the 150 rounds for his defa cannons and two Mica active radar missiles for self defense as his radio crackled to life

Delta 23 attack plan implied they were to block the advancing armour column by destrying the road and bridges so others can have all the fun. Surinder hated this safe plan for his team but could not do much within limits of his authority as he quickly armed up the weapon station no 3 and then energised the laser designator panel as his left hand smoothly clicked on the throttle lock and briskly pushed it past the re heat notch all the way up. At twice the spped of sound covering the 50 odd kilometers did not take long and soon he was looking at the long column of t-80s on the winding mountain road rushing thru the passes at the the small special forces team bravely taking up a blocking position .

The pakisatni commander did not eben know he was there till the road before him blew up and the driver had to apply emergency brake and the 50 plus ton armoured monster came to a skidding halt . The rest of the mirages repeated the precision strike all along the column though every subsequent strike was riskier as the pakisatni soldiesr quickly opened up with the heavy machine guns and shoulder fired sam teams took up position but then against supersonic low level strikes their effective ness was not much to say the least .

The 12 mirages flew up and away and regrouped and then came in a screaming dive in a wide bow formation emtying their rockets in long salovos at the mass of hard to miss tanks looped up and away in a flurry of flares and aluminised polyesters leaving behind 23 tanks destryed and 16 more badly damaged -stench of burnt fuel and explossive filling the horizon .

-kingfisher flight -break away immediately - hornets on strike

And the hornet lead came into firing position smoothly as he deployed his air brake for a fw seconds and armed up the 16 odd maverick missiles in his centerline pylons ,quickly clicking on the target designator as the attack computer stored up the coordinates and then pressed the fire button . Even before the missles have found thier mark the second hornet came on and released its load . And then came the third .

By the time the hornets have exited there was not much for the navy fulcrums to do except attack the follow on columns and the fuel browsers and the ammo trucks which made for great fire works dispaly .

the whole attack took less than 16 minutes. The road ressembles a tank grave yard and stench of death filed the mountains and the sky . Those watching the brutal strike shuddered at the thought of those on the recieveing end if they are the enemies .

great senario uptill now .waiting for the next installment.How about combining all the posts together into a novel :wink: :wink: I am sure Tom Clancey would be shamed by you senario.

:?: was just wondering whether instead of using rockets wouldn't use of cluster muniton like cbu-30 be more effective against grouped armour.Also how can rockets be that effectve against T-80 with their ERA which is supposed to protect them from a sabot or heat round :?:

Idea 1:

How about involving the land attack capability of the navy in the form of Bhramos or KH-35 .I am sure attacking Karachi would be a great distraction for the paki leadership.

Idea 2:

Suppose you wipe out the head of the snake by a precision stike when a meeting is going on of the paki leadership just as the indian pm does a live broadcast to the world

this would be a great ending

:eek: tht would be like taking da whole fun away from it. Killin da snake without a lil bit of tormenting in da form of seeing his country fall apart and being stripped by da dentist of his nuclear teeth. ahhhh :lol: Dont think so. Kantak u seem to be in a hurry to finish da secnario quickly as possible :cry:

Sunil would probably have a stroke from all the wet dreams being bandied about on this thread lately; snatching the self proclaimed Pakistani national manhood out of Kahuta and what not.

P.S. - As I am feeling charitable today, here is a free BRF survival tip: Glib talk of political assassinations has proven to be a very effective way of getting whacked by the Bradmins.

btw, 2 things have been itching me for sometime::!:
>you haven't said anything 'bout the paki missiles yet.those will obviously be one of the most important factors in an INDO-pak conflict. it's unlikely that India will risk an invasion into tsp b4 making sure their missile might is negated.of course u can't ignore the nukes that wud have already been mated with the missiles (mounted on road transportable platforms) in the event of a war.

>the no of "new" t-80uds still surviving after the conflict has gone on for so long is "a bit" difficult to grasp.being the main 'main battle tank' :D in pa armoury it is unlikely that SO MANY wud have survived at atime when the war is almost over.

Tom Clancy is a dooh peeta bachcha compared to this. One minor thing - couldn't resist - nickel cadmium batteries have high self discharge and cannot be used for long-term applications. Use lithium thionyl chloride, nife or silver/silver oxide.

Some times into future this kahuta anti armour strike at kahuta against pakistani t-80 columns will be discussed in war colleges across the world as a classic example of awac utilisation in naval strike operation. The use of comparitively cheap russian anti armour rockets by mig 29 ks and more expensive mavericks by hornets in a perfectly synchronised way will be treated as a perfect example of precision strike followed by area saturation to achieve the overall objective . The rockets fired in volleys of 4/6 managed to neutralise the explossive reactive armour and then penetrate the comparitively thin top armour and tracks since they reached the target with marginal time difference due to shallow angle firing and movement of the target during actual strike trying to avoid the barrage of rockets comming from different angles . The cost of operation was also less and the average cost per tank destryed or immobilised was one of the lowest achieved in modern warfare .

What really made this strike a perfect operation was ofcourse the tight control of time over target by the phalcon ,high training level by both us and indian pilots and their mutual iner operability giving them the unique advantage of knowing their aerial partners limits of capability and ofcourse the short commings - a direct benifit of cope india series of exercise held in gwalior and kalaikunda in the near past.

Pakistani armour never truely had a chance against such an overwhelming level of strike force arrayed against them trained to operate togeteher in just this knid of sitution . There was no surprise in their counter strike and the ressult was but predictable . They failed to realise the difference in iaf s overall superior capability generating out of force multipliers like midas and phalcon . They never expected such multi dimensional change from 65 or even 71 thoughthey should have from kargil but they didnot .

Pakistani fell for the deliberate misinformation campaign of multiple crashes and their publicly debated reasons . They did not know atleast in an effective way how superior mig 29 ks are from mirage 3s or what the phalcon can actually "see" or how the effect of aerial refuelling from midas can dramatically increase the weapon payload capability and operating range of all iaf aircraft . And ofcourse they had absolutely no idea how to neutralise the air dominance role of su-30 mki which no other combat aircraft in the world with the exception of raptor can even remotely match .

They did not know or believe iaf pilots fly almost one hour every day more than most of the combat pilots in the world or the ultra rigorous training scedule they go thru even before they are allowed a single combat sortie

questions would also be asked why so many frontline t-80 were held in reserve when a full fledged war was going on -the answer was simple the pakistani rulling elite tended to ensure their personal protection first last and always by stationing the best of equipment near the centre of power
-in the end it would not serve its purpose but that again was way into future .

But the mission was far from over and as the the giant choppers came on the extraction phase of the operation came into being .

The air throbbed as the giant Mi 26s came in to land one by one on the battle scarred lawns of the nuclear weapons complex . the first chopper to
leave went with the fissile core of 35 fission bombs .the rest got quickly loaded up with the special force troops ( americans first and then the indians ) .The reason was simple it would be more diffcult for the rangers to blend with the local population if something went wrong .

- roger that phalcon 1 - exiting now - altitude 1000 ft - max possible speed 120 knots

Sq leader ahuja pushed the power lever full forward as the large rotors became a spinning disc and gently pushed the collective forward ,the torrent of dust and small stones was a positive health hazzard for those on the perimter security and the sound of twin engines on full power enough to rupture eardrum if any unlucky sod came anywhere near 50 ft of the heavy chopper on take off mode . Then slowly the rotorcraft lifted off when everyone thought it will surely crash and as ahuja pushed the collective a few notched forward careful not to have an excess pitch down attitide so as not to stall the compressor -it moved slowly off the hard ground like a baby vulture taking its first flight or more correctly a baby elephant taking its first step into wild .As the air speed built up the controls became more responsive and he started flying the wayshe was designed to be -in and out of comabt with all of 20 + tons of load to home and to safety . The other 5 followed the lead in lose c formation leaving behind the destroyed dreams of pakistani nuclear grandeur .

-phalcon 1 - donkey lead- formation in air -steer us out -please
- donkey lead -phalcon 1 -we see cluster of bofors 40 mike mike radar 6 kms to west - steer course 085 -imediately

and the chopper headed away from danger ,guided by the invisible angel in the sky

But for the pakistani air defense gunners the war was not over as they saw their fat targets dissappear out of projected course and out of range and death came from another direction as one of the escort sukhois let loose with a single anti radiation missile and the whole gun emplacement went up in smoke ,killing most of the gun crew along with .

some 300 kms to north west six large articulated trucks pulled out of a cave and started changing shape as the long nodongs started turning skywards .

The synthetic aperture radar terminal on phalcongave an audio alarm and a red blip appeared on the grid with a warning tab attached " MISSILE LAUNCH MODE"

It usally takes about 30 minutes for the hydraulic arm on the truck to push the heavy intermediate range ballistic missile into launch position 87 degree to horizantal and another 5-7 minutes for final uploading of target data ,launch authentication procedure and only then the actual launch can take place

Aircommodore bhasin had 30 + minutes to respond . Under normal circumstances it may not be enough time to neutralise the missiles on ground and aerial terminal phase interception would be the only option open

- roger that -phalcon 1 -code broken arrow - turning now

4 of the sukhois on cap over the heavy lift chopers smartly pivoted in air ,their thrust vectoring nozzles gleaming in the afternoon sun as they defelected downwards and simultaneously the cannards move into a different position maintaining satbility in an highly unstable aerial platform as their tails spewed out red hot exhaust and the birds went supersonic with distinctive twin boom even before they have finished their turn to course . All of them were carrying a single long range air to surface missile with 250 kg blast fragmentation warhead and no name tag and no range specification mentioned in the mannual but stated to be more than 300 kms and capable of flying at nearly 3 times speed of sound . Some call it Brahmos but it was not that -it was a next generation land attack missile developed with brahmos not after it some day it will be called
VOLVERI taking its name from volga and kaveri the two most loved rivers of two great countries and sticking to earlier naming tradition.

The missiles dropped free from their heavy duty craddle and slowed down due to air resistance of a supersonic launch .The twin solid motors based on hydroxyl terminated polybutedine and ammnium perchlorate with a sprinkling of aluminium powder and iron oxide catalyst ignited as the pyros discharges a string of sparkes into the propellent core . Simultaneously the onboard computer powered up and switched on the nose radar and imaging infraed seeker head . It tookits feed from the radar altimeter and activated the twin rown of fins and fired of a set of small rockets and the almost 4 mtrs long missile fell to ground in a classic parabolic flight profile till only 15 mtrs over ground and then it stabilised on its programmed course. The built in GPS reciever powered up on its own and querried the glossnas satelite overhead ,the satelite obliged and down loaded its position with respect to target and the fins moved and the exhaust nozzles moved and the missile slewed on its self determined course to target already at mach 1.3 and quickly acclerating to mach 3 and beyond . Once launched it was unstopable as its own ring laser gyro kept it on selected course an automated update from the satelite overhead helped the nav computer make so very minor adjustments to the steered course .The low light tv camera just under the nose gave a real time video of the flight profile to the sukhoi pilots and thru established data link to air battle commander on board phalcon 1 both of whom had the authority to self destruct the missile in flight and reprogramme the target co ordinates but then today was definitely not the day for such fancy moves .

Air commodore bhasin intently looked at the somewhat grainy display of fast moving terrain on under the missiles nose cone and quickly the flat green field s of punjab gave way to rugged baluchistani mountain side and then like in a cheap war movie the six trucks came on view . Even on the poor video feed the shape of long and fat nodongs were unmistakable and suddely the viewing angle changes as all the four missiles went vertical getting ready for that final terminal dive

The missiles went high almost 5 kms into sky then tipped over guided every step of the way by their onboard flight computers selected their individual attack zones comparing the nodongs against their memoru data base and automatically armed up their warheads and dived

They crashed into the still lifting missiles one by one over a 1000 yds by 1000 yds spread in a classic limited area saturation profile the warheads exploding barely half a second before projected impact with ground and then came the secondary explossions from the unburnt fuel and the fuel of the nodongs themselves . All combining to form a spectacular giant fireball almost matching the intensity of mountain sun.
