BORDER ROAD ADVANCED BASE CAMP -OUTSKIRTS OF KANDAHAR
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Md Gul scanned the layout of the camp thru his powerful zeiss field glasses . it was a neat layout with the diesel tank firm on the north west corner .Exactly opposite was the residential tents and a semi temporary office cum field hospital . A lone sentry box manned by a team of four BSF jawans was the first hurdle to be taken care of. A wooden observation tower appeared not yet manned but it appeared the indians are trying the tighten up the camp security in a hurry .

Right in the centre of camp surrounded by a border of white painted stones ad indian flag stand nearby was the radio shack with its satelite dish pointing skywards maybe right at the moment communicating with their bosses in Delhi on how to quickly finish the highway projects and what additinal security steps need be taken .

The security barrack was a small low key affair wit a couple of military style tents and its own store and a few gypsies could be seen parked most likely belonging to the officers .

A double layer of barbed wire surrounded the whole tent complex .Gul was not sure if the space between was mined or not -but then most likely they were not .Four 2000 watt search lights were located at the four corner posts for some kind of elementary protection against night snak attacks.

Gul had no enemity with the indians as such in fact he liked them for their easy going friendly manner and their helpful attitude to local population particularly their military doctors who spent lot of their time in taking care of the villagers who every day flocked to the small field hospital for treatment of everything from chicken pox to dysentry to cardiac problem .

But then he problem with indians was they inadverantly have started chocking the money supply of the resistance movement by making these roads across the rugged country therby opening up the vast interior used for poppye cultivation to swift action by the ameriacn anti drug forces .
Secondly the indians were responsible for a mindst change in the general population who were no longer terrified of the taliban dictates as they were even few years back. The women were now joining the workforce particularly in cities like kabul, heerat and kandahar . Some thing had to be done to stop this invasion of allien culture and values into afganistans way of life .And for that Indians must be made to leave the country .

Behind him six of his team mates lying prone waited for his signal as they pointed thier RPG towards individual targets starting with the diesel tanks for basic diversion followed by the radio shack and then the troop barracks . Gul looked around for one last time before he raised the bulky launcher to his shoulder and swivelled the tube smoothly towards the oil tanks and then very gently sqeezed the trigger . The grenade propelled by the sudden thrust of its propulsion rocket exited with a smooth which and accelerated all the way to its target trailed by a thick plume of white smoke . The detonation of the small warhead was muffled by the large mass of diesel in the tank and then the fuel iginited in black smoky fire ball .

The sentries at gate post reacted fast in fact too fast for Guls comfort.hardened by years of counter insurgency turned the medium machine gun on its mount and the statco chatter of 12.7 mm rounds whizzing thru air filled the sky over gul . Other members of his team did not even bother to raise thier head and waited for the firing to stop . Gul knew he had to take off the radio shack but then for that he had get out of cover and aim taking all of 10 seconds . As he crawled out of the shallow ravine the dark smoke from the burning fuel tank coverd the ground giving him the much needed cover as he reloaded and fired for the same time and then the 12.7 mm slugs caught him squarely in the chest throwing him back with sudden brute force as he for the first time saw his own pulsating heart and then everthing turned black

Bolo tararara
Excellent scenario initiation Shankar. Great to get some realistic action back in picture. Hope Indian Def Forces shall be deployed in full strength to crush paki stooges (ala Angola). This should be more possible now as the nuclear fangs of pak have been taken out and their forces almost annhilated.

INDIA (AIRLINES) OFFICE- KABUL
----------------------------------------------
It was a full house in the airlines booking office not just because of comming deepavali back home also because western tourist and nato trrops posted on un duty wanted to have a good dekho of taj and red fort before going home to dreary franfurt, kentucky and sommerset . To top it all the sat link of booking computer was down and the air conditioners was working its best albiet unsucessfult the torrid heat wave comming in from the mountains .

No one really noticed the deep blue land rover in the parking bay just outside the glass partition of the ticketing counter and niether did anyone took more than one cursory look at the burkha clad woman who got out of the 4 wheel frive vehicle and rushes out in to the adjacent shopping mall. Women drivers were no longer an unusal in the steets of afgan capital as were few years back.

In the distant horizon the snow capped mountains glistened in late morning sun drawing everyones attention away from the chaos of a city being rebuilt at a frantic pace and nee less to mention indian construction firms like larsen and toubro and hindustan construction comapany were there in full force from building six lane city roads to interlinked multi level over passes from new runways at kabul international airport to inter city bus terminus .

since most of the reconstruction work was anyway funded by long term soft credit of indian govt the afgans did not mind the indian presence .After the us forces left in late 2007 and most of nato forces too followed suit a token un peace keeping force was all that there was to maintain the law and order status quo in the troubled country .Everyone assumed afganistan has returned to acceptable level of democracy and thier job was done and done good . There were some exceptions ofcourse and that essentialy included india and china both for their different though basically same reason . Indian troops stayed back in small numbers since indian govt did not want another taliban style take over and its effect on kashmir ,china simply did not want india to hog all the glory and gratitude of new elected govt of afganistan.Welcome to the real world of geo politics was how a vetern journalist from NDTV described th situation

Pinky watched the scene with all the curiosity and maturity of a 4 yrs old . As she walked around the large reservation counter every eye turned towards her and they all smiled at her deep blue eyes and jet black hair and at her captivating smile as she tagged along beside her mother desperately trying for a reservation on an already over booked flight .

The deep blue land rover attracted her so did its blinking lights and she sauntered off leaving the protectio of her mothers arms and walked towards the smart jeep .

The 50 odd kg of RDX exploded with a whoosh of hot air as the burkha clad" woman "gently squeezed the radio detonator igniting the primitive mercury fulaminate charge in a flash and the heat generated ignited the mass of RDX .The shock wave of detonation hit first smashing the expensive float glass windows inwards covering the entire lobby with millions of tiny pieces of sharp glass moving at supersonic speed cuting and maiming without distinction and then force of the blast itself made its destructive presence felt as the hot air at more than 1000 degree centigrade tore thru the reservation lounge expending its unspent energy on the dumb stuck t be passengers tearing off thier limbs and blinding them crushing their chest inwards and implodding the skulls in a mindless orgy savage violence .Terrorism at its best is how a leading german newspaper describe the event next morning .

By the time local militia would clean up the mess remove the dead there was but one small body strangely unblemished by the carnage .She had deep blue eyes -some what unusal for an indian child

Shankar:

You've written a good episode, but why this fascination with 'blue eyes'? Why can't a pretty Indian child have black or brown eyes as usual? Or do you think there will be more sympathy from the readers for the dead child if the eyes are blue?

Just my two cents.

PRIME MINISTERS OFFICE -NEW DELHI
----------------------------------------------
The mood was sombre as the full cabinet commitee on security went thru the power point presentation by the director general of military operations on the three recent attacks on indian targets by taliban .While the loss of property was not very significant loss of life was and more importantly it was the erossion of credibility of indian armed forces ability to protect the lives of its citizens in a distant land .

To make the matter more complicated the situation between australia and indonesia was getting nasty with australian navy put on a higher state of alert after satelite photo showed massing of landing craft and assorted ships in souther ports of indonesia though not in any significant number yet .

The indian media hype was particularly strong .Unlike in kashmir where the media treated the civilian killing with restraint the afganistan episode was played up to max in almost all the news channels particularly the live photographs of blue eyed child being carried out of the wreckage of the car bomb .It was treated as a failure of indian policy in afganistan ,the reason for indian involvement in rebuilding afganistan was questione dby one and sundry except maybe the big corporates all of whome had big multi milion dolar construction contract to complete .

As the presentation ended the director general of military operations looked at the assemble elected leaders for a clear cut direction in which the armed forces should react . His recommendation was quite simple .

- Deploy by air a full motorised division immediately .
- Sanction purchase of 12 searcher 2 uav specifically for afgan operation
- Air support is essential so IAF should be simultaneously deployed with a squadron each of jaguars and hawks for quick reaction against attack in progress and also destruction of tero hide outs
- permission from afgan govt to carry out limited counter offensive operations in afgan interior if required (expected) without prior clearence from thier ministryion of defense as currently in vogue
- increase the force level requested if required without pre cabinet approval in fact a carte blanche to go to limited war if the army felt it is nessecery .

The deliberations strted in earnest and the arguments and counter arguments went on and on with the left parties strongly against any increase in present deployment level ,the defense ministry was non commital and the BJP alliance wanting an immediate deployemnt with arty and gunship support to protect indian life and property .

As usal no consensus could be reached during the day and the dgmo walked back dejectedly to his small airconditioned office in army headquarteres various politicians comming out of the meeting made spectacular comments of risks of indian involvment in afganistan and possibility of development of a vietnam like situation in our own back yard.

As the indian army chief quitely listened to the days proceedings from dgmo he reached afateful decision .In his characteristics way he picked up the phone to prime ministers office and spoke without interuption for 15 minutes . The soft spoken prime minister of india did not take long to decide .

The first covert military build up in afganistan started within 48 hrs as the first of the IL 76 s landed in kabul international airport after circling the tarmac thrice and then landed in a curtain of flares - a standard landing procedure for all military aircraft landing in kabul .But before the build is complete and indian armed forces go in offensive many more lives will be lost but then again loss of innocent lives was never a big deal in afganistan

China factor

Post by member_8163 »

This thing has been toubling me for some time. Hope I have not asked a silly question. I believe that Chinese military assistance to Pakistan is huge. Pakistan has no money to pay for either Chinese missiles or the port facilities that Chinese are building there. Means a lot of stuff is coming free for Pakistan. That makes it China's proxy, very much like Cuba was in cold war for the Soviet Union.

This makes simultaneous hostility on both Western and Northern border very much real, if China has a reason ever to fight a war with India.

Is India really prepared for it?

India's borders are really huge, and the size of military as well as equipment levels clearly seem inadequate to me.

We are the land of Mahatma Gandhi. When we wage peace, others cannot wage war against us.

If the misguided neighbours do attack us, we shall sit in Satyagraha in front of the invading armies. We shall appeal to the conscience of the invading soldiers and their officers. That will force them to reconsider their ill-advised actions and return to where they came from.

If that doesn't work, we shall send Brinda Karat and Arundhati Roy as peace emissaries. They will persuade the invaders to withdraw. If persuasion doesn't work, they will shout slogans and go on a hunger strike. That will teach the stupid invaders what it is going to be like for them if they occupy India. They will run back to the peaceful environs of their own countries.

So what do we need a large military and lots of military equipment for? That money is better spent on paying the salaries of employees of Haldia Fertilizer Project of Hindustan Fertilizer Corp that has not produced an ounce of fertilizer for the last 15 years. We must have our priorities right.

If we buy any military equipment, somebody is going to be paid a commission. Someone may be bribed. We don't want to encourage bribery and corruption in our country. Therefore we should not buy any military equipment. Na rahega baans, na bajegi baansuri.

Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti.

GAS AUTHORITY OF INDIA -COMPRESSOR STATION H12-AFGAN IRAN BORDER
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was a majot pumping node in the 3000 kms long iran -india natural gas pipelien carrying gas from irans south paras gas fields to enrgy starved power and fertiliser plants of northern india . 6 massive natuarl gas compressors recompressed natural gas comming across the iran afgan border to a pressure of 60 atm for another 200 kms journey towards afganisatn pakistan border and then to the industrial heart land of northern india . While the pipeline itself was mostly underground laid at a depth of nearly six meters below the rocky surface the intermittant pressure boosting stations were naturally overground which was vulnerable to a surprise strike.

Sr engineer Palit looked at the colour dispaly of the piping net work under his coverage area which thru an elaborate system of telemetry and built in pressure flow and temperature sensors slearly showed the status of the pipeline in ral time including instaneous flow ,pressure and temperature of the highly flammable cargo being pushed across the rugged landscape 24x7. All parameters were in the green . The graphic display also showed the the status of each and every valve manifold in the compressor station and the on line valves along the section .

Another adjoing screen showed the status of the safety system based essentially on a liquid nitrogen based high pressure purge system which would be activated automatically should the temperature of the gas flowing thru the pipeline at any point exceed 90 deg c and simultaneously closing the scetional block valves and open the atmospheric vents built into pipeliene to allow the hot combustion products to atmosphere in pre selected secluded locations so that any acciedental fire could be contained quickly .

It was a fail safe system or so the engineers who desgned it thought till the taliban stuck .

The first explossive charge detonated under the main valve manifold which controls and routes the flow of natural gas in the compressor station itself starting an intense clean burning fire . The second charge ripped open the massive liquid nitrogen tanks holding the fire extinguising nitrogen .The super cold liquid nitrogen at a temperaure of nearly minus 200 deg c flowed in a frigid rush over the delicate sensors and control elements making the multi million dollar fail safe system useless in a matter of seconds . The third series of explossion followed in a matter of seconds some kms away from the compressing station igniting the trapped hundred of tons of compressed natural gas in a massive fire ball which quickly spread to the adjoing sections

Patil could not believe his eyes as the everthing normal status of pipeline section quickly changed to fire alarm with amber flashers comming up all over followed quickly by red control failure master alarm comming on with the accompanying hooter alarm .He acted quickly as pushed the master shut down switch down after going to mannual mode ,shutting the flow of gas to the fire ravaged section fo the pipe line and then flashed the danger code to master pumping station at south paras gas head for immediate shut down before more section gets affected . South paras acted quickly and the gas supply to indian industries came to halt in a matter of minutes

Unlike fuel or coal fired power stations gas fired power units which have come up all over up,haryana, rajastan and punjab in the aftermath of comparitively cheap natural gas availability thru iran pipeline does not have any significant reserve stock and as the gas pressure fell one by one the units started tripping off the northern power grid creating a massive chaos at central load despatch station who ha no other option but to shed laod by switching of power vast arae of northern india till older oil/coal fired plants could be brought up to max output level . The process would take nearly 48 hrs and a strict power rationing was put in place for the industry with only 35% of the contracted demand being supplied .

An economic crisis was in the making and a military solution became a nessecity .

IAF STATION AGRA -2200 HRS
------------------------------------
it was a clear moomless night as the four il 76s started thier 16 engines one by one and awaited taxi clearence .The flight plan filed with atc did not indicate any specific destination at least not one easily recognisable over r/t .All the four massive aircrafts were carrying full fuel load and were scheduled to join the high altitude airways between delhi and moscow few minutes after take off

Inside everything was packed tight like a sardine can and the the soldiers in full battle dress sweated and sweared at will albiet in low voice at the weather and at the uncomfortable seat at the close proximity of thier friends and at the dinner they had just before boarding and at the noise inside as the four engined revved up to initiate the long taxi run to hammer head almost 10000 ft away from the parking ramp.

The 3 bmp 2 s were secured along the centreline of fuslage and the soldiers sat along the sides and also inside the bmp s to maximise space utilisation .The weapons which included an assortment of ak 74s,heckler and kosch, carl gustav anti tank rifles and ammo boses, bundled belts of 12.7 mm and 5.56 mm machine gun rounds were every wheer secured with nylon ropes to the seat frames

All the four il s were overloaded and the pilot knew it but the operatioanl requirement was specific .So they could take off only when air temperature over the runway is less than 32 degree celcius and theer is atleat 5 knots head wind and even then the take off will be very very tricky

As the land cooled so did the air over it and the four aicrafts slowly taxied into take off position for a staggerd take off pattern at 5 minutes interval to allow the preceding aircraft enough time to get to preliminary cruise altitude of 5000 ft and get off the climb out path before the second aircraft could be launched

Group captain nadita sahani eased on the collective throttle as she gave a slight sidewards push to the stick to turn the heavy aircraft into take off position .She frowned as she watched engine no 3 rpm some what low but still within acceptable limits ,she quickly disengaged the collective throttle revved down the power on no 3 engine and pushed it up again to and engaged the collective throttle once more -this time all the rpms were more or less same and the engine notes became a smooth whine characteristics of the 76s in idle mode .Behind her she could clearly see the blinking navigation lights of the other three aircraft in a neat row as she clicked on the transmit button to request take off clearence .

- tower - jumbo lead-formation in take off position-request take off clearence - staggard take off - 5 minutes interval
- jumbo lead - you are cleared for immediate take off-climb runway ehading and make your altitude 5000 ft - turn right 290 to intercept high altitude airways south of delhi international -use your own navigation

-roger that tower -rolling now-make altitude 5000ft-turn right 290 at 5000 to intercept high altitude airways - iff code set at -- mhz

Nandita looked at the flap settings ,hydraulic pressure, fuel tank level, auto pilot dial in selectors ,iff transponder switch and engine exhaust temperature one last time As she tightened up the four point safety harness and stood on the brakes as her left hand smoothly pushed the collective throttle all the way to gates and the quadrapole engines responded with eagerness of many thousand wild horses pushing the aircraft slowly at first and much faster later as she lifted her foot off the brake lever . The spaced out white centre line marker first became a continious line and then a blur as the 100 ton plus aircraft picked up speed and the whine of the engines changed into a raspy roar as she neared the end of the runway . Nandita did not rush the take off she waited cooly as the air speed picked up and the long runway visibly diminished every second the air speed indiacator strted rolling up and the controls became easier with each passin second and at last with barely 1000 ft of runway remaing she pulled the stick towards her with the grace of a golfer and still the iarcraft did not leave ground as the nose angled up and then the air pushed more and the grip of gravity was broken as the lumbering machine clawed into sky .Barely 100 ft over the end of the runway she slapped up the undercarraige lever ,it btook ten more secoonds for the massive wheels to lift up into its housing and the airspeed pushed up quickly therafter . Nandita kept the flaps in take off position till the radio altimeter showed 3000 ft when she pushed back the control stick looked at the air speed touching 300 knots and retracted the flaps to cruise configuration .As the air speed indiactor touched 400 knots she pulled back on the stick onec more and started climbing to her designated cruise altitude as the GPS console came alive showing her the course corrections required to intercept the high altitude airways .The fuel guage showed 83% full and her first refuelling point scheduled to come up in 30 minutes some where over punjab.

Behind her the other three candids streched out in a long line spaced exactly 5 miles from each other and with 1000 ft vertical separation .After all ther were all "medical aid " flights"

INDIAN AIRFORCE STATION -MAHARAJPURA GWALIOR
---------------------------------------------------------------
squadron leader vimal mistry looke at his wingman flight lt ranjita saxena as they rolled into the main runway for a westernly take on runway 24 on the dark moon less night . They had a simple mission escort a flight of four il 76s over the pakistani airspace . Two more su-30 mkis would be joning them in fifteen minutes somewhere over pathankot .He was not at all comfortable about taking a green horn over an escort mission over hostile air space though no one really expected the depleted pakistani airforce to do any serious interfearence mission against four front end combat aircraft at night but still he did not like the idea of anything happening to his "wing man"

50 mtrs behind and 20 mtrs from his starboard wing tip f/l ranjita had no such apprehension ,in fact she looked forward to the mssion her first combat mission and that too over hostile airspace for the next 2 hrs or so and that would include two air to air tanking one each way . She was the one the first four woman pilots to have joined indian airforce combat squadron and as far as she was concerned she was as capable if not some what better than her male team or rather squadron mates and she was simply dyingto prove it .

Unknown to her or for that matter any one in te fourth largets airforce in the world just such a situation was in making few hundred kilometers to the north west .She tightened up her shoulder straps and pulled up her fire proof nomex gloves as she waited for the take off clearence .

Her transfer to the combat squadrons from initial posting with tarnsport wing was not smooth though she topped her batch both at nda and hyderabad but then the news papers took up her case and the old fashoined mindset of iaf top brass had to give in to public outcry as she expressed her inner desire to fly a mirage . There were many objections some imaginary some real from maedical reasons to physical stength to ability to react quickly in a crisis situation but finally her sheer determination to fly afighter prevailed .So today she was about to initiate her first combat mission in one of the best multi role combat aircraft in the world as she adjusted the hud contrast against the night sky and reduced the powerful cockpit airconditioning . In the distance she could see the low hily outline of airbase as a grey shadow and runway lights came on almost simultaneously as the her radio came alive with the laconic communication of air trafic control

- red arrow flight -you are cleared fr take off -fly runway heading -climb to 7500 ft and intercept your wards at grid co ordinates ---
-tower- red arrow lead - cleared for formation take off - climb to 7500 ft and intercept package flight at grid --- rolling now

For the residents of gwalior more known for its historic fort and bandits in adjoining chambal two mirage 2000s taking of in middle of night was not even worth alook sinec practice flights take palce almost every night but if they would have seen they would have seen the long cylindrical shapes that hung from the airframe and wings with red tips

AIR TRAFIC CONTROL TOWER -IGI AIRPORT -DELHI
-----------------------------------------------------------
Sr air trafic controller Bhasin watched the four large blips on his appoach control radar and also the two smaller fast moving blips moving in quckly to intercept the larger blips on a steady intercept course .On his hand he held the airforce intimation about this special flight and quickly moved in to integrate them in the high altitude east west airways outbound from IGI international - a narrow strip of air space barely 2 km wide towards pakistani city of lahore . Ofcourse pakistani long range radars if any of them sre still functional particularly the civilian one at lahore international will pick them up in about 15 minutes time by which time the special aircrafts will hav to identify them but till then it was to eveyones advantage if the special nature of the flight stays a bit fuzzy .

- jumbo-arrow flight -delhi tower - make flight level 300-course 285 -contact lahore tower at frequenct 122.7 - confirm
- delhi tower -jumbo arrow confirms course 285-flight level 300 now- over

As the 4 il 76s made a gentle urn to the new heading with a slight bank to port the two escorting mirages quickly formed up on the wings of the lead and trailing il 76s merging into a single blip . On pakistani radar atleast for some more time as large transport fleet carrying "medical" supplies to afganistan .

INDIAN AIRFORCE STATION -PATHANKOT
------------------------------------------------
The two su-30 mkis sat patiently on the parking ramp all fueled and armed apart from standard r-27er and mandatory 4 xr-73s they were also carrying kh-31 s for just in case situation .

The pilots were already strapped in and the avionics powerd up to standby mode . For todays mssion no phalcon support was available and they will not be needing any refuelling in air though it was there if required .

Wing commander patil looked at the attack computer or rather the mfd configured to display the weapon status, master am status and soon will show the target spectrum and thier individual position and vector all over pakistan at 300 km plus range when their extra powerful upgraded bars starts emmiting . At the moment the pathan kt towers were down loading all situational data recieved from long range search radars for a preliminary evaluation of possible threat scenario whcih was not very complicated . Two mirage 3 s were on cap some 50 kms west of lahore and a flight of four more mirage s were approaching lahore from a south westernly direction at 450 knots in clear diamond formation .

Behind him his wso was busy checking the attack system in more detail like the arming circut and pylon weapon interconnections along with planned route data fo the speci flight and the current metrological data over pakistan and more aprticularly pakistan afgan border . Then he checked the functioning of the flight computer and atack computer themselves on self diagonistics mode and waited for a few seconds as the computers rebooted and went thru the pre programmed check out cycles looking for any deviation from standard of the numerous sensors and circuits and then all the section status turned green ok and the engine start sequence could be initiated . He switched the central coloured mfd to nav mode and energised the glossnass based gps system as the pilot front seat brought in the the engine parameters on central dispaly and shifted the atack computers dispaly to left screen and signaled the ground crew to start the port engine .

It was very much like a video game but with a slight diffrence - the price of loosing this game was swift death .

- axe flight - tower-cleared for taxi and immediate take off -expect apckage at 30000 ft course 285 - good luck
- roger that tower replied the pilot as he pressed on the ignitor button of starboard engine and the faint vibration filled the airframe along with overpowering noise of powerful jet engines comming to heat as the black smoke pods were expelled and the fans started rotating faster making the combustion of 100s of litres of jet fuel more even and smoother and the sound changed from a raspy roar to a smooth ear splitting whine .

For Tourists

Khushab is at a drive of 45 minute from Sargodha. You reach the Khushab after crossing the river Jhelum. It is of great pleasure travelling on some height with great river Jhelum flowing below.

The name Khushab is said to be of historical importance.Once an emperor passed through Khushab on his way.he drank teh water and acclaimed trhe quality of water and called it a "place having fine water".
Khush means "fine" and aab means "water".

An entry from the federation of american scientists website:

The 50 MWt, heavy water and natural uranium research reactor at Khushab is a central element of Pakistan's program for production of plutonium and tritium for advanced compact warheads.

Khushab, with a capacity variously reported at between 40 MWT to 50 MWT [and as high as 70 MWT], was "commissioned" in March 1996, and had been under construction with Chinese assistance since the mid-1980s.

According to a Pakistani press report ["Pakistan's Indigenous Nuclear Reactor Starts Up," Islamabad The Nation, April 13, 1998], the Khushab plutonium production reactor had gone critical and began operating in early 1998.

At The Hush of Dawn

At 4:17AM on Feb 16 2008, there was a huge explosion near the Jhelum, 3 kms from the Khushab nuclear facility, believed to be the detonation of a nuclear bomb with a signature almost immediately identified by US "seismological stations" to be from an RA115/6 from Ukraine widely believed to be in the possession of the Al Qaeda.

An alert was sent from the US State Department, with UN approval, to the Pakistan Government to the effect, asking them to exercise total restraint, a corresponding one sent to the GOI almost ordering PM Arora to set into effect the cessation of hostilities, a temporary ceasefire.

A nuclear explosion at Khushab was the least expected of happenings anywhere in the international community. The chain reaction that set in, led to some surprising conclusions.

i dont think the State Dept. asks permission from the UN for anything - more the other way around, but other than that, nice story development

F/L ranjita saxena took her job very very seriously and flying a fast aircraft at just under five hundred knots so close to the wake of giant transporters was definitely a reason to be very focussed and serious . In fact her natural tendency was to open up the gap between her small and agile flying machine to atleat 500 mtrs of horizantal and 200 mtrs of vertical seperation to get away from the awe ful wing tip turbualance which even the fully validated and operationalised flight contol computer was finding difficult to manage adequately to give a comparitively stress free flight .Her own navigational lights were ofcourse switched off and the candid pilots cruised along at steady speed depending on her to maitain minimum safe distance which atleast today dod not mean much -about 25 mtrs of horizantal seperation and 10 mtrs of vertical sepeation as long as they were within indian airspace and would likely close up further as they would turn west some where over gilgit for a shortest cut across pakistan away from the heavily defended pakistans capital region .

As she looked at the scrolling map dispaly on GPS the programmed route flashed on indiacting a some what complex route directives ,way points and cruise altitudes between various way points to kabul .She would cross the line of control north of srinagar (which meant if the situation turns nasty she would get some supprt from the mig 29s on operation ready paltform at srinagar airbase or from nearby avantipur and if required small detachment of older su-30 k could also give a helping hand . But the chances of that happening was really slim since at the moment the data indiacted at most six mirage 3 s in the region which even if try a massed intercept the time of combat available for the mirages will be very small as they would be diverted from somewhere between lahore and islamabad at the moment as per latest ground radar data uplinked by long range radars on international border to the su-30 mkis and forwarded to the mirage flight thru encrypted data link .

The sukhois were in an unusal flight profile for such heavy interceptors .Theye were flying in ground hugging profile and active radar off which would give away thier presence to all pakisatni posts like a full page advertisement and the " surprise " part of mission will be lost . They were operating fully on auto pilot and auto throttle setting mimicking the course of il 76 s only at a hight of 100 ft above ground level ,burning fuel at horrendous rate but then those birds can afford to do that since barely half thier max operating range will ever be utilised in this mission and refueling support was available beween jammu and srinagar from a lone operating from srinagar air force station specifically for this mission .

The mirage 2000 is in fact an almost terminal evolution stage of mirage series of aircraft which started with the mirage 3 which were europes first supersonic aircraft and proved immensely popular both for french airforce and to its export clients . Mirage 200 was the second generation of this fighter series with somewhat similar configuration but a brand new design all the same . The seed of this immensely sucessful project started as anglo french variable geometry swing wing aircraft commenced sometime in mid sixties but was still born because french pull out from the project two years later some say because of british refusal to deviate from establshed design and flight control norms .The british joined the germans to produce another sucessful aircraft the tornado while the frencg continued with some radically diffrent concept .Along the way was born the advanced future combat aircraft which was again cancelled as the cost per piece for limited envisaged demand was prohibitive and french dont like big money on anything which could be done cheaper by a diffrent route .A wide variety of this new smaller but equally potent aircraft came up form super mirage 3 to delta 1000 to delta 2000 and finally super mirage 2000.However the powerful snecma m 53 engine developed initially for advanced combat fighter was decided to be incorporated in mirage 2000 project.

Of all design choices in mirage 2000 the one most discussed and criticised wasperhaps the delta wings which though gives far better performance in high altitude high speed flights it comes at the cost of low speed agility and lenght of take of and landing roll . To counter these inherent design problems the centre of lift in mirage 2000s was moved forward of its center of gravity therby embeding in the small aircraft a certain degree of inherent instability .Flight control became more complex and computersied flight control became a nessecity for this unstable aircraft. Two piece elevons with full lenght leading edge slats provided the nessecery control surfaces required to create agility in an unstable aircraft. The nine weapon carrying hard points in the airframe four in wings and other 5 in fuselage with total 6350 kgs of payload capabilty allowed the mirage 2000 to be desiganated as a deep penetration strike aircraft capable of delivering a precision strike in any weather condition and also if so required drop a 500 kt thermo nuclear weapon precisely on designated target if the need so arise .The nuclear strike version were two seater accepting the pilots unstated grudge that flying and delivering a nuclear bomb by so called lob toss method ,releasing the nuclear payload at high angle of attack and then turn back quickly to get out of the serious blast damage envelope is most likely beyond the capabilty of one person in cockpit .

- arrow 2 -arrow lead -refueling point in five minutes -make speed 380 knots and altitude 28 000 ft
-roger -arrow lead -briskly replied ranjita as she made dialed in the new altitude and speed settings into her flight computer and did not even feel the smooth change in speed and ht as at the distance she watched the navigation lights of il-78 mki came on blinking

Dear Sanjeev,

I got this e-mail from a source I can not disclose right now. But you might recognize him by the writing style which would be familiar to you. All I could say is he was a very active member in this business who seems to be no longer interested in active contribution. His views however, are very much valuable.

Take is FWIW.

Anil

PS. If you guess the source correctly, you got that dinner you wanted, either here in Dubai, or there at the SF bay.

QUOTED MESSAGE BEGIN

This is one of those things that boils away under the surface and one never even realizes.

Two months ago Hojatoeslam Alizadeh visited Islamabad, his "routine visit" was followed up rapidly by a "routine visit" from Ahmed Mahfouz. Mahfouz's visit was not even covered in the media, I heard about if from a source in the Pakistani ministry of oil. You might recall Alizadeh's cousin is... well that puts Mahfouz's visit in perspective. We are seeing a balancing act here.

There was a decision from the Min. Oil and Pet in Islamabad but the word is that it goes back all the way to the CE's secretariat. Apparently it was one of the first decisions taken by the new COAS. Two firms Hamotter and Deccelerate Systems, both based in Dallas, and both having a toehold in Pakistan have floated a consortium KarGas which has been given the go-ahead to build a large terminal just west of Karachi to dock LNG carriers. Decellerate has the contract to exploit the flaring gas from the South Pars field. One is told that much tooth pulling and armtwisting occured to get that to go through but now that its all finally done, the ships are picking up the gas from the rigs directly and from what I hear they are also docking at Bandar Behesti for reasons only Allah truly knows.

There is talk of a new Natural Gas fired power plant being setup in Karachi by Mian Mansha. Take a guess as to who will purchase the bulk of Mian's electricity?

This will not sit well with Ahmed Mahfouz's uncle. I haven't had a chance to talk to people in Medina but I expect the elder Mahfouz will take up the matter with you-know-who on his next visit to the "palace".

He will meet others at the "palace", because apparently the "White" Prince, was on a houbara hunt in Chagai last month. This never made the news but his entourage was "visited" by a Pakistan Army unit and his hosts, two famous balochi sardars were arrested for drug trafficing by Maj. Gen. Munir (you know - Zafar Abbas's successor at ANF... he was the Quetta director of the ANF until he went to the US and after that he was made Abbas' deputy in Islamabad). After the arrests the "White" Prince's entourage was searched and allowed to return home. Apparently the incident upset the "White" Prince so much that he returned home without houbaras and he has no plans to return to Chagai anytime soon to hunt more houbaras. Normally this sort of thing happens when to many people hunt Houbara in the same area but this was the White Prince himself for god's sake!!!his hunting skills are legendary.

Incidently, about two weeks ago, there was news flash when a unit of the Makran Scouts made a seizure of a processed heroin base (NOT GUM!!!). The size of the seizure was stunning several tons to be exact.. and then very quickly the news disappeared from the Pak airwaves. The Pakistani Major commanding the scouts reported that one of his men had made a mistake and the material was not heroin base but some other chemical bound for Sistan Baluchistan....

The balance is tilting... and it is only a matter of time before the White Prince's father and the elder Mahfouz move their pieces on the Chess board.

Look guys, I am NOT an Admin, and I don't enforce policy here. Like anyone else, I would like to see a coherent story that does justice to the keywords "possible", "indian", and "military".

The old story served its purpose, but it is dead now. How long can you flog it? And we are fast approaching the time frame of the chain of events. But the political situation is different now.

While maintaining the entertainment value of this thread, we should not forget that this is a simulation excercise. You seed the continuum with certain disruptive events and then try to figure out what can possibly happen from there. As we move more and more forward from the trigger event, the less and less accurate the predictions become, and at some point of time, they don't mean anything. the old thread reached that point, and IMO lost its value.

That is why I took the present day (March, 2006) situation and planted a disruptive event, ie overthrow of Musharraf by an Islamist/chinese leaning general. Now it is anybody's imagination what can happen.

Now think. Do you want to flog a dead horse again? Or explore new possibilities?

Spy Story: Needle in a HayStack

Anil Nambiar sweated in the summer heat of Dubai. Even the airconditioner in full blast did not do much to the fiery sun. The beach was deserted, and the range rover was the only vehicle around. Muhammad Ali was crazy as usual to ask to meet him at this beach. The guy must be reading too much crime novels and imagines himself as the hero in all those stories. There is no dispute that Ali was a good source, but sometimes he takes himself too seriously. Ali seems to be late today, but the janitorial contractor at a luxury hotel can't expect to leave on time anyway.

The Toyota with markings of Dubai Police glided smoothly on the beach road, turned into the parking lot and stopped a little far. The cop got out, looked around and almost casually strolled towards the range rover. Anil knew the drill. His ID and press acreditation card for the TV channel he worked for satisfied the cop and he went on his way. His press credentials gave him so much freedom and so much access to places, he really couldn't imagine any other career for him. After graduation in journalism, he became a political TV newsman for a local channel. Within a short period of time, he made waves by his investigative reports. He became famous, but Thiruvananthapuram became too hot and too dull for him. Certain political leaders wanted him out of their way very badly. Then the management made him the bureau chief for the channel in Delhi. After masterminding a few stings and busts for the channel, Delhi too became too hot for him. That is when he got an offer to become the middle east correspondent for another channel. He didn't like it, but agreed after he got a visit from certain men in black who made him an offer he couldn't refuse.

Anil liked to deal with politics and politicians, but in Dubai, what he got into was dealing with money laundry, drug traffiking and on top of all, terrorism. He was instrumental in busting many an attempt to smuggle arms over the arabian sea into India. When his colleague briefed him about the new assignment, he was surprised and happy at the same time. After a long time he gets to deal with the big boys. Too big in fact.

His phone rang, and he heard Ali's voice on the other end. "Sir, it is too hot to walk today. Can you come and pick me up please?" He said in characteristic Kozhikode Malayalam. Anil almost laughed out. The crazy ******** could have done that originally, and avoided this wait in the sun. Anil agreed, hung up the phone and drove off out of the parking lot. Ali was waiting at the service entrance security cabin, chatting away with the guard. He picked him up and drove off.

And Muhammad Ali had a lot to talk about what happened at Burj Al-Arab today.

i had started a scenario where the "sheikh" is threatening to overthrow mushlaff, while trying to strengthen links between isi and alq... and some such trivial matter... maybe it is indeed forgotten...

however i intended this to be a continuation of that matter... if your scenario is much more life threatening than that, i am very much interested in taking a good look at it.

PAF LONG RANGE RADAR STATION -RISALKOT
--------------------------------------------------------
S/L Rasul ahmed had been watching the passage of indian tarnsporters flight for quite some time and assumed they were in an emergency supply mision to leh ,not unusal during this part of the year when the snow on srinagar leh road was still heavy and occasional 2/4 aircraft formation was normal . As he lit the 7th cigarette of the shift and tunred the manuual control on antena rpm to better watch the movement of the flight . On his radar form a distance of nearly 100 kms all he could clearly see were the four il 76s in loose diamond formation at 30000 ft flying along the LOC well within indian airspace but may be inside the 10 kms prohibitory limits which none of the countries airforce really took seriously but was more of point of diplomatic discussions in airconditioned five star comfort .

His radar was on search mode carrying on a full 360 degree sweep of the norther araes and linked to muzzfarbad and peshwar airabse for interceptor support if required . The small airbase at risalkot did not have any mirage or fancy f-16s on the tarmac as on time.

He however had at his disposal a battery of croatle air defense missiles for the base defense and to use if possible any intruder that is foolish enough to come within the range of these lethal missile .

So he was some what surprised as the indian transporteres calmly turned into pakistani air space just north over gilgit in pakistani occupied kashmir and took on a course 290 a heading that will take them north of risalkot -peshwar and then to possibly kabul .

He acted quickly .First he passed on a scramble alert to peshwar particularly adding it was most likely a transport fleet and pose no danger to miltary facilities in pakistan then he picked up the base intercom to croatle battry comander to powerup the launchers for a snap shot at the intruders and then he once again got in touch with muzzafarbad to request a quick launch of the mirage on operation ready platform to force them down at the nearest airport taking care once again to mention it was a transport fleet and all attempts should be taken to get then down to ground as a prize of war . He could almost congratulate his own self and could see the glitterin medals being pinned on his chest by the president along with an out of turn promotion if he really could capture the indian aircraft .

All his communication was duely intercepted by the raw gulfstream flying low along loc from leh to srinagar decoded and passed over to the lead sukhoi vide secured high speed encrypted data link . In his excitement rasul forgot to use the encrypter and land lines and that was an unpardonable mistake .

The first kh-31 hit the radar command centre cutting of all communication immediately and filling interrior with shred fo broken glass and hot sharpnel from the large fragmentation warhead the second missile blew up the revolving antena and croatle launcher placed close by . By the time the shocked pakistani air defense personel could rig up and power on the secondary radar the il 76 flight the il-76 flight was already way beyond their effective range

Rasul had two options now .Eiether he could report to higher ups in peswar about his inept handling of the intrussion or just keep quite and hope later on he could create a " detailed report" on why the indian transport flght escorted by a full sqadron of sukhois could not be stopped in time .

He opted for the safer and later option as he slowly replaced the reciever .

RED ARROW FLIGHT SOME WHERE OVER NORTHERN AREAS PAKISTAN
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
f/l ranjits watched with interest the wing flash of the flankers as they launched the long range strike missiles at the pakistani early warning center and the the explossions to about 30 kms away as the radar station ceased to exist in a plume of red fire and black smoke . She was fully alert and tense now -expecting the shrill scream of her radar warning reciever any momemt signalling the easy part of the mission was over .She only hoped the engagement comes close to afgan border where the rolling hills would favour the higher powered 2000s against 3/5 of paf even if the paf could put up larger number of interceptors . Her gloved right hand smoothly moved over the master arm switch clicking it on as she brought up the the weapon status on master dispaly screen . She was still on emcon and the rdy search and track radar still on stand by mode to maintain the credibility of a transport flight as lonf as possible . The il-76 s were now on max power cruising at almost 500+ knots and she slowly moved her nomex clad left hand over the air speed selector and slowly tunrd it clockwise dialing in 500 on the panel keeping close to the candids .

Down below the sukhois with thier first easy job dine accelerated past the sonic barrier heading directly for peshawar air base to cerate a "mild" diversion to give enough time for the jumbo flight to cross into afgan airspace unharmed and then they along with the mirages can break contact and make their way to bagram .They were in a classic SEAD mission an unusal role for the iaf flankers .

F/L ranjita was an avid reader of all recent aircombat involving mirage 2000s and the one involving a shoot out between a greek mirage 2000 and turkish f-16 was of particular interest to her as she approached the peshwar air defense zone and gor ready to go active and power up the four mica missiles she was carrying underneath for the comming battle as she knew peshwar was were the paf have located the newest falcon block 52 s recieved from us after lifting of arms embargo and she also knew they were equipped most likely with sidewinder 9m/9l type since the few 9x type they had in thier inventory were with falcons in sargodha/islamabad region .

The shoot down of turkish f-16 over the aegean sea was perhaps the biggest blotch on falcons enviable combat record .The combat was a standard two on two air engagement with a a pair each of greek mirage 2000 and turkish f-16s.Soon the pairs seperated during high g evasive manuvares and each was for himself in a classic high speed moder air combat dynamic scenario. The greek mirage 2000 got inside the turn of turkish f-16 closed in within for a perfect magic shot and destroyed the f-16. The falcon pilot survived so did the wso who was actually an israeli official attached to turkish airforce though in what capacity is still not known .The combat was analysed in great detail and finally it was concluded the higher instaneous turn rate of the mirage 2000 compared to f-16 allowed the mirage pilot to come into a classic tail shot position even when the turkish falcon was still executing a max rate turn . If the mirage 2000 pilot needed some more time to get into firing position the f-16s with its arguably highere sustained turn rate would have come out of the engagement in a better position the roles would have possible reversed . But that did not happen and as such the advantage of higher sustained turn rate of f-16 in close wvr combat was never clearly demonstrated .

PAF BASE PESHWAR
------------------------
Group captain Mansoor ali was the officiating air officer commanding of one of the pakistans premier operational bases since his boss was in islamabad for an urgent meeting with the general to decide on how to effectively deply the new 77 f-16 s recieved from usa in the last few years .For the time being about 30 of these spanking new of jets decorated the tarmac of his air base ,the hard shelters yet to be completed and the civil contractor genearting one after another origianl excuses to explain why the job has not been done on time despite substantial advance already taken by him from the airforce . The government procedure did not allow him to change the contractor or shoot him as he would have liked .There was a rumour also that since the contractor came from rawalpindi he had solid political connection in the highest circle .

The half complete radio transmission from risalkot early warning station made him uneasy . He was not worried about a flight of indian air force transporters veering of route and unintentionally crossing into pakistani airspace .What got him worried was total communication blackout from risalkot after the initial transmission . Recent signal from his own search radars confirmed what he already knew -the indian aircrafts were trying an unauthorised overflight of pakistani teritory . It was in his authority to eiether force them to land in peshwar and let them fly out after a thorough check and debrief of the pilots but then it would give the indians to have a good first hand look at his new falcons atthe air defense layout and the dug outs in nearby mountains which housed the pakistans strategic weapon system components . It would surely be not wise to make the indians to land here .

The other option was ofcourse to shoot them down and later on spread a story how they refused instructions to land and paf was left with no alternative but to shoot them down in conformance to international norms .The later option appealed to him and seemed better in all respectes as he picked up the red telephone connectic him underground bunker holding the four f-16s in operation ready platform and the air trafic controller in tower simultaneously . He spoke a few quite words and the falcon pilots leaped up from their cots as they picked up the helmets and rushed towards thier sleek jets . The ground crew were already hooking up the starter carts and small turbines started even before the falcon pilots could strap down . The underground shelters sloped gently up to the hammerhead of main runway 27 and the falcons would be exposed to strike only during final take off roll

RED ARROW FLIGHT - 100 KMS FROM PESHWAR AIRBASE -30000 FT
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
F/L ranjita quickly changed her multi functional displays to combat configuration .The central dispaly she changed over from scrlling map display based on gps/ins to air search and track mode for her rdy ,the left hand mfd configured for various standard and emergency communication frequency she changed ino weapon status display which showed in deep blue the 8 missiles she could use in combat and their position with respect to the airframe ,the right hand mfd she changed over from airs earch mode to engine paramter and aircraft control surface status which quickly projected a mini mirage 2000s on a small window very detailed including the weapon stations with missiles .It essentially showed her mirage as it would go into combat in a few minutes . Up on the head up display the attitude indiacating winged graphic showed level flight ,the air speed indiactor still steady at 500 knots and the target cursor was still dead since she waited a few seconds before switching on the radar at 80% power .

Surprisingly she did not feel scared she felt very cool and very detached as she calmly executed the sequential steps drilled into her reflexes by years of training in hyderabad ,kalaikunda and finally gwalior .She remebered her instructors words -"remeber ranjita in high speed air combat who does not allow fear to hamper judgement always wins ""Be scared by all means since fear will give you the extra edge but never let it control your actions which should be always dictated by your knowledge and reflex -he who stays cool stays alive and usally wins "

Spy Story: Needle in a HayStack

In early eighties, the new found oil wealth of the gulf countries started attracting lot of foreign workers into those countries. MAnpower was needed for the booming construction, oil and commercial fields. Even domestic help opportunities are available for expat workers. A good portion of this labour came from the muslim population of Kerala, owing to both the closeness of the gulf over the arabian sea route as well as due to the trading ties between the arab trading posts like Dubai and Kozhikode in Kerala. Devoid of any major industrialization, the gulf opportunities came as a boon to north Kerala, and a steady stream of people started thronging to the gulf countries. Initially over small sea crafts called "launches" and then later on airplanes. Majority of such expats were muslims, not only because of religious reasons, but also because they were industrious and business minded. This flow of Keralite people resulted in a huge Malayali population is all of the Gulf countries, and it is always claimed that you can live comfortably in the gulf countries knowing only Malayalam. Every public establishment, let it be a shop, hospital or even an office, will have Malayali presence.

Thus it became the primary career path for a large population in Kerala to go get a job in the Gulf. Children grow up with that in mind, and after some education, they look for a chance to go over, often with the help of friends or family members who are already there.

Muhammad Ali had done the same, six years ago. He was twenty, armed with a trade certificate in welding, he ended up at a construction site in a godforsaken outskirt of Dubai, working under the blazing sun at scortching heat. He had enough of it in three months. He wanted to leave and run away, but thoughts about his widowed mother and two sisters back home kept him going. Those were tough times.

He had this exceptional ability to hold pleasant conversations with anyone. His room mates, well there were ten of them, loved his company. So did others whom he met around. Within a short period of time, he developed a huge friend network in the area, mostly Malayalis. He also learnt to converse in other language including Arabic, Tamil, Kannada and even Urdu. Life, for the young Muhammad was tough, but he was trying to get the best out of it.

And that is when he met Musthafa who was manager of a cleaning services company catering to the low end hotels, dormitories and even residences in the area. They met in the video store, and the conversation started with the latest Mammootty flik and ended god knows where. When they parted, Muhammad had a round of snacks, a cool milkshake and a job offer with him. Within a weeks time, he joined Musthafa's unit as helper. It was a very pleasant turn to get out of the terrible life at the construction site. Musthafa helped him to get a UAE drivers license and in a couple of years time, he became a supervisor of sorts, working and co ordinating services at the customers site. There too, he made a lot of friends. Within six years, he married off both of his sisters, brought in both the brothers in laws to Dubai and discharged off most of the debts his family had.

Gulf is a favoured location for film and Tv stars to do stage shows and make money, so as for politicians to collect donations. Every year there will be several shows, some by reknowned stars and some by even starlets who hardly had a hit. The entertainment starved Gulf malayali would pay to see any such shows. But in 2008, a leading sponsor broke a bombshell. He announced a series of shows starring two of the leading superstars on the same show. The whole gulf area went into frenzy about it. Muhammad was a big fan of Mammootty and he wanted to see the superstar closely. He went to the location early and looked around. And that is where he met Anil Nambiar.

Anil didn't really like covering the shows. His mind is always on the investigative journalism, but at bureau chief at Dubai, it was his job to co ordinate the coverage. He was annoyed when he saw the stranger helping the camera crew. But before the event is over and the last of the equipment is packed up. Muhammad was almost like part of the crew. He even got a one on one photo with his favourite star.

Next week, he got something more than that. A part time job as camera assistant on the KOL TV team. In less than a year he was the most trusted field resource for Anil Nambiar. He also practically knew the staff of every hotel in Dubai, such that he could pick and choose which one to work at today.

The assignment at Burj Al-Arab came that way and came to a successful completion. But his job has just started. It was to hunt a needle in a haystack.

PAF BASE PESWAR-BLACK VIPER FLIGHT 4 X F-16
-----------------------------------------------------------
Group captain anwar checked the mfds one last time before reelasing the parking brake and advancing the throttle just a notch as the turbine rpm increased by about 10% and the falcon dipped its nose ready to roll one more notch forward and the wheels strted turning slowly at forst and then faster as the aircraft strted its taxi roll towards the take off point . As he clicked on the avionics switch the screen came alive and the rpm indiactor showed 23% max rpm .The fuel tank lavel still showed 100% full which he knea will quickly change as he would initiate the full after burner take off roll .He knew if he is to make a sucessful intercept of the iaf transporters he has to do it fast and do it right at the first chance sinec afgan border was too close for comfort.Thoush the american have almost left the country they still maintained a single squadron of f-15s and a-10s in for support of nato peace keeping troops and they tendede to act a bit too decisively when any aircraft ciolated afgan airspace without prior permission .Obviously the indians have some kind of secret understanding with thier new found strategic ally before so blatantly daring to violate pakistani airspace .

He and his flight mates would need just few minutes to change all that arrogance he thought as he clicked on the landing lights at the ened of underground taxi way leading to open runway and slowed doen once again for the other three falcons to catch up before doing a four aircraft formation take off so as to give the indian aircrafts minimum time to carry out any evasive moves .

Peshwar is perhaps the most lively city in pakistan and definitely the heart and sould of its morth western frontier province . Borderd by battle hardened khyber pass the peswar bazar is a travellers delight in more ways than one .Here you can buy anything from best quality dry fruits to rpg7 and ak47s and enquiry fro ak 47s and its variants did not even merrit a raised eyebrow.Drugs of all kind were also freely available but you have to know some one or the chances of being ipped off with packets of sugar in palce of premium heroin was quite high. You can also buy the best oriental rugs, traditional afgan jwellery, handicrafts from loacl tribals at bargain price provided you have the time and stamina to bargain for atleast half a day with the afgan shop keeper

From the military ciew point peshwar more particularly its sprawling well protected air base has its own importance soaked with decades old tradition and history . The epoch making u2 flight of garry powers shot down over moscow originated from peshwar.Created as a royal airforce station in undivided india was used extensively by the british to support its ground troops in north western frontier province. However us was not to keen to use this strategically located air base during operation enduring feedom because of its proximity to afgan border and more particularly large population of taliban sympathesisers in the city and surroundings .

- tower -black viper flight -ready to take off - request immediate clearence - Standby black viper flight hold short of runway 27
Group captain anwar checked the flap settings ,it was where it should be 15 degree as he turned in his seat to have a look to confirm the navigation lights on wing tips were indeed in off postition.

-black viper flight -tower -cleared for immediate formation take off - targets at flt level 300 - 4 india lima 76 s with probable 2 nos midas 2k
good luch and good hunting
Anwar frowned as he took on the last piece of unwelcome information .The possibel presence of 2 armed mirage 2000s definitely complicated the intercept solution somewhat since now he has to deal witht he escorts first before tackling the transports but no problem thought anwar as he was carrying 4 side winders and two amraams so were his wing man and other two following close behind . The mirages made the intercept more intercepting and fun .He already looked forward to paint atleast one mirage under his canopy as he opened the throttle all the way and beyond past the reheat gate and the falcon responded with a brute rush of power almost sucking him into the hard cushioned ejction seat as it acclearted to its take off speed of 170 knots

AX FLIGHT 2XSU 30 MKI
-----------------------------.

-Ax flight -jumbo lead- we detect four bandits taking of peswar on possible intercept course -executing paln delta zebra now
wit that the four giant il 76s broke of the straight course to bagram and started a sharp diving bank towrds ground leaving the sukhois and the mirages a clear air space to engage the falcons .

Wing commander assumed command immediately of the entire IAF detachment .As the flight lead of small interecpt flight group responsible for the safety of special inbound special cargo flight he reacted quickly and precisely as he switched on to inter aircraft frequency

- Jumbo lead make course 065 -altitude 2000 ft -execute now
- red arrow - make course 310 -altitude 35000 ft
- ax wing - go active now execute attack plan zeta bravo which conveyed to all in the loop the lead sukhoi is going for a heat seeking shot first with r-73s then break and allow the mirage 2000s to go for a active radar mica shots at the enemy already busy eveading the super agile thrust vectoring r-73s . If that was not enough the sukhois will get into bvr launch zone and use the r-27 s for a kill shot and in the unlikely event one of the falcons managed to survive the mirage 2000 s were free to use the ir type micas for a kill . Only one mirage and one sukhoi will be engaging the targets the other two will act as wartime reserve and join the battle only if one of the mirages get shot down .The thought that a sukhoi might also get shot down never entered his mind .

Patils practised gloved hand flashed over the instrument cluster as he quickly disengaged the auto pilot and switched the weapon station 1,2 and 11,12 and threw the bars radar power switch to active and the mfd in cenre immediately showed the position of four falcons on sharp climb out about 60 kms to his right and the computer quickly analysed thier flight profile and assigned target priority and also a red arrow flashed on the hud showing the way to most threatening target . Patil trusted his computer and pushed the stick to right and forward ,behind him the titaniumlined exhast nozzle swivelled and the canards moved up and down preventing the aircraft from going into an uncontrolled spin at this sudden change of thrust vector .

i think India could have asked permission for overflight
from china.after all it is a much more matured country and
does not have any sensitive facilities in that region.
that would be a much better option than risking flying over
tspian air space! my 2 cents.

Spy Story: Needle in a HayStack

The mansion stood towards the rear of the prime location off Al Waleed Road in the posh Jumeirah District of Dubai. It is the area where the ultra rich lived, and the place is filled with such mansions. The flower garden in the front gleamed in the sun, and the well manicured lawn gave a soothing recess from the glare. Small fountains filled the place with tranquil noise. The place was practically deserted, except the poor gardener who was still working with edging the farther end of the lawn. There was no sign on the entrance, but it could be guessed that someone of importance lived there.

The bentley glided silently in, and moved to the front porch. It stopped at the front porch, and the plump bald man who was once the prime minister of Pakistan and the lean aged man who was the chairman of his party got out. A servant got out of the side door and proceeded to open the main door. The lean man said something to the servant in Urdu, but it seems he did not understand. He impatiently repeated to no avail. The third time, using Arabic, the servant bowed and proceeded to pick up a briefcase from the bentley. He carried it inside after the masters.

Everyone in the household liked the new addition to the army of servants. Though appeared a little less bright, Muhammad Ali had a pleasant personality, and was willing to take any chore with a smile. Apparently he understood only Malayalam and Arabic, which gave the others a chance to gossip on him using English, Hindi, Urdu and other languages. Poor Ali would sit at a corner and brood that time.

Servants hide in plain sight at such places. The ones work inside have access anywhere inside the house. Their existence is not acknowledged by the occupants except when giving them instructions. They in turn move around like ghosts, well out of the way of the lords. Muhammad Ali blended into the crowd quite easily, and within weeks gained enough trust of the household manager, that he could access anywhere inside the mansion. He also developed a liking to serve food and beverages to the master. The master used to have a lot of visitors and there used to be lot of discussions.

And nobody knew the new servant can in fact understand every word they said, and Anil could see glimpses of the needle appear in the haystack.

The most attractive feature of su-30 mkis thought wing commander patil was thier total interception capability in any operating or rather combat environment without ground based radr support and with the radar in full power active mode there was nothing in skies around which it did not see or could not lock onto ,which in any way can pose a danger to his flight group. As the tactical picture cleared up quickly he could see clearly the four pakisatni f-16 c s climbing out at max power still unware of the sukhois on a direct intercept course and the only the mirages at height were exposed at the moment . The il 76s were diving out of the engaement envelope with more than 15 degree bank and he did not envy the speical forces guys holding onto whatever they can as the four engines around them screamed around them plunging them into a dark sky .

The f-16s quickly realised there were more than the two mirage escorts out their as the powerful emmision from the sukhois lashed thier air frame and thier radar warning recievers screamed warning as the sukhois radar pulse repitition frequency almost trebled as it went automatically from scan to track mode as it detected the four falcons comming into its sure kil envelope

The cursor around the lead falcon turned red and shoot prompt came up on the huds . Wing commander patil waited for a while all of 5 seconds before he clicked off the hard plastic tab covering the weapon station activation cum fire switch and squeezed once waited for a few more seconds till the first missile cleared the launching aircraft in ablaze of fire and squeezed once more and the second r-27 er went its way . The falcons have by now dispersed around the compass and all of them were shooting off blinding white flares and chaffs in a ghostly cloud as they tried to avoid the incomming salvo one r-27 trageted for each falocn on il-76 intercept mission .

Patil broke off immediately so as to get away from getting into deadly envelope of aim 9l sidewinders and possibly imaging infra seeker equipped aim 9x and climbed upside down looped back and came alonf the flank of the pakistani flight group ready for a salvo of heat seeker shot with his r-73 s .

His central mfd now configured for air combat showed two less falcons and in the distance he could barely see twin glows of fire falling slowly towards the perched earth . Unlucky bas--- thought wing commander patil they should have broken off much earlier before the r-27s went into terminal guidance mode but then he did not have much time for analysis sinec the comabt was still very much alive . On his screen he could see one of the falcons has managed to turn inside him and now in his 5 0 clock low an ideal heat seeker firing position and the other doing a vertical charlie straight up at the il-76s .He could also see his wing man lining up neatly behind the falcon that has managed to put himself behind him .

He could do only one thing under the situation -give his wingman a clean field of fire for his r-73s and go to the assistance of mirage 2000s the last protective screens before il 76s and death and he respondede with the trained reflex of an aviator who has flown mirages and ofcourse the venerable mig 21s and a short stint in the trisonics where he did not last long since his attitude was more of a combat pilot than the permanent cool of a high altitude recon man .When the su-30ks came along he opted for and was immdiately selected for training in russia .

The falcon pilot following patil did not believe what he saw as the sukhoi which was almost within his sidewinder launch range suddenly corkscrewed out of the lock envelop and climbed up and out of his range with slight swivel of the red hot exhaust nozzles clearly visible in the night sky as a firey beacon . The pakistani tried to match the move as he put the falcon on a hard climb to reaquire the escaping sukhoi and watched with dismay the sukhoi with its high thrust to power rating acclerate swiftly out even when almost vertical and his own air speed bleeding off . And then the unthinkable happened the other sukhoi which so far had been following him went active and launched two r-73s at him in the same time brackating him completely .Death came in form of twi detonations as both the 25 kg fragmentation warheads exploded uder the wing roots and main fuel tank .There was no escape .

F/L ranjita could now see the anwars falcon quickly comming into engagement zone on her 3 O clock and she had to prevent him from comming into a tail shot position since she did not have the advantage of powerful al31 s on her back and if the falcon comes within the lock on range she was surely a dead duck . Ranjita pushed the control stick all the way forward and the mirage obeyed her as it hurtled down going supersonic as it moved quickly to meet the earth below 2000 ft from ground she deployed the air brake and pulled the nose up slowly careful to keep withing max g and angle of attack limits and then pushed the throttle lever all the way forward aiming for an imaginary point where the pakisatni falcon is expected to be at the end of its hard climb as it levels out and then flicked open the protective cover and swiftly pushed the red palstic tab onec arming up one the mica infra missile and then squeezed .

Anwat levele out at 16000 ft hoping to see the mirage right before him but ther was nothing but black empty sky and then on the extreme right han corner of his hud he could see the mirage climbing out sharply and then the brief flash as the single mica launched from the wing rails and bore upwards towards him in a blaze of speed.Automatically hsi protective programming started dispensing bundles of flares as anwar reduced power to amke him less attractive to the incomming missiles and turned towards the climbing mirage it is when ranjita launched her 2nd mica this time radar type straight at the oncomming falcon .Time fr anwar ran out as he was totally boxed in and had no escape route left .Still he tried tried by putting on max power and diving forground but the move was useless it made the active radar mica lock on better and then there was just a flash as the mica squrely hit the shark mouth air scoop of falcon and ripped the aircraft apart .

- ax lead -red arrow 2 -spalsh one falcon -can you pl confirm
- good show red arroe 2 -confirm spalsh one falcon -form up on candis quickly and exit bandit country asap -good work onec again .

They did not even know i the heat of the few minutes of high intensity air engagement they have come closer to afgan border and now all they had to do was to bank to port and they were safe

Spy Story: Needle in a HayStack

Anil Nambiar cursed himself. His attempts to mole the Sharif residence failed miserably. Too bad you can't clone Muhammad Ali, he thought. The moron who tried that place could not even get a job there. Of course Sharif ran a tight ship. He has a lot of stuff to worry about other than politics and conspiracy. Business deals must be made and merchandise must be moved. Not all of it was legal to boot. He was surprised to see that Zafar-ul-Haq was rarely invited there at all. All of their meetings did happen at the latter's residence. That was good for Anil. His best resource is at work there.

Another problem he faced is the way these guys handled communication. Why can't these blokes use Internet like their friend Musharraf does? Sanjeev Gupta is having a field day stateside with Musharraf. The only problem there is that even with support from the crypto guys from Hyderabad, he was not having much luck with the encryption he uses. Why the hell the CIA guys lend their crypto tools to Musharraf? It would seem they too are involved in the game.

"Maybe I should ask 'the ascetic'" he thought. He started feeling that 'the ascetic' knew much more than the guys in active service did. His cryptic e-mail he shared with Sanjeev shown a deep insight into the situation. Too bad he got pissed with the administration and left the org. He was the supersleuth who hardly moved out of his home. Information came in in search of him, and he made deductions approaching intution.

Anil sent an e-mail to 'the ascetic'. But 'the ascetic' insisted on'face time'. Finally he agreed to see Sanjeev instead if he can take a flight to Atlanta the next morning. The conversation can not be recorded, so Sanjeev had to transcribe it from memory.

And he e-mailed it to Anil

Spy Story: Transcript of a Conversation

Ascetic: Look appearances count and the illusion of defiance is so much more manageable than real defiance.

Gupta: So what are you saying..

Ascetic: I am saying what I cannot say. Think about it - with so much at stake what would you do? would you sit back and let it happen or would you find a way to make it happen precisely as you wanted it to be?

Gupta: So the Islamist takeover was arranged in some way...

Ascetic: your words not mine... I prefer to say that the risks were well managed..

Gupta: But the embassy takeover, the public humiliation of the Ambassador by General Yusuf... all covered by several different news agencies... the bodies of security contractors dragged through the streets and the ritual slaying of several embassy staff by Pakistan Army units..

Ascetic: All risks were kept to manageable levels.

Gupta: This is amazing if it happened.

Ascetic: If?

Gupta: well.. I mean do you know how it happened.

Ascetic: Somewhat... we picked up things here and there, straws in the wind initially but pretty soon we saw the pattern. Finally the boss just asked the sh*t face to face if this was all staged.. he concurred.

Gupta: Why keep this down.. at our end?

Ascetic: The Americans wanted an illusion, we wanted a steady hand on the nuclear trigger at all times during the transition - the details were irrelevant - we accomodated the Americans they accomodated us.

Gupta: This must be a first in human history.

Ascetic: No actually its all very old, they have been doing this a while, do you remember an account of a Punjabi Musalmaan leader in the 1940s? the one where he was asked by his British controller to slap a British District Commissioner in Lahore in public view so as to gain acceptance among anti-British radicals? this was more of the same, stage managed to ensure that there was control... when you read the details of that incident all that we have seen on TV last year is just a rerun.

Gupta: The bodies ... those poor ba*tards..

Ascetic: An acceptable sacrifice... look at it this way, if they hadn't died - who knows how many the disorganized violence would have killed..

Gupta: The Shias.. why were they slaughtered by mobs.

Ascetic: Most likely an uncontrollable factor, sectarian issues deep inside Pakistani society. Anyway it all made the changeover seem very real and put the Iranians on their guard.

Gupta: The Christians too..?

Ascetic:(Laughing).. do you seriously believe that all those holy people so desperate to convert all these poor Pakistanis to Christianity actually give a living shit about them?... cannon fodder.. more excuses to scream from the rooftops about danger to the faith.

Gupta: But thousands were killed in the rioting...

Ascetic: (another laugh)... and whose counting?

Gupta: An acceptable cost..

Ascetic: From our perspective.. (shrugs).. from the American perspective.. yes, most definetely.

Gupta: Our perspective?

Ascetic: Well... if this hadn't worked out... Cold-Start would have to be initiated... and then as they say on that disreputable internet forum... "General Avadesh's Kharga would have begun its march.." I daresay.. now that we are off Siachen... it costs us far less to kill Pakistani Armymen than ever before.. and a wholesale slaughter like the one mandated post Cold-Start, why that would be the most efficient killing on earth after the American bombing of Hiroshima.

Gupta: So we would have had to use nukes...

Ascetic:(laughs) no ... as the Boss says...."No no no.. we would wait until they nuked us first... see we have no first use." (laughs again..)

Gupta: So if this was so much in our favor and so much more efficient why didn't we do it..

Ascetic: Pakistan isn't just a country .. it is a festering sore in the social fabric of India.. nuking them to bits isn't going to make the hole go away, it is just going to make the hole permanent. The idea of Pakistan has to die first... with the Islamists willing to underwrite the creation of yet another illusion called Pakistan, foolishly clinging to the idea that somehow a political elite can be created that is bound to the Clergys' dictat by way of an alleged subservience to Islam... (another cruel laugh)... the nukes would not have helped.

Gupta: So from our point of view this is an entrapment.. that has taken perhaps centuries.

Ascetic: I suppose you could say that. First the clergy were fooled into believing that they could oppose "Hindu India" by siding with the West. Then they were betrayed by the West and now they think they can go it alone, and I suppose tomorrow if that fails too, they will think of some other lies to tell their followers.. but consisely put: this is an exercise in demonstrating that a political contract based on religious loyalty is unsustainable. There are too many people who still feel that such a thing is possible. We have come a long way since the rule of Emperors who declared themselves God. This is about humankind moving forward down the path of enlightenment... but for that to happen the pretenders to the realm of light must be discredited and so to that end we must submit ourselves to this ignominy.

Gupta: How long does this phase last?

Ascetic: The same as the others, a decade... and with each decade the distance between India and Pakistan becomes less and less bridgable.

Gupta: Who came up with this plan?

Ascetic: It wasn't me, though I did see those that created it. My father was a police officer detailed to protect one of the wise men of Hindustan and he was present as a mute spectator at the event where this idea was formulated into an actual policy. I did not know about this event in all the years I was in service. I was about to leave the service in disgust the day that Jalalabad fell to the Pakistanis, and I even wrote my resignation letter. A week later on his deathbed my father told me the story... and I never handed in my resignation letter.

Gupta: Who were these men?..

Ascetic: How does it matter?... they are gone now.. into the pages of history... as you and I will.. nothing remains the same... everything changes.

shankar.....those were f 16C according to you..and they didnt even try to engage the flankers with amraams????????The whole engagement looks little too easy...i think you are underestimating paki pilots too much here.
