DIRTY DONKEY FLIGHT -0900 HRS
-----------------------------------------
Wing comander joydeep scanned the air search radar scope .He could see the a-380 carrying un medical relief team quite clearly in almost outer fringes of his screen .The a-380 was moving at more or less the same speed and the horizantal as well as vertical seperation between them much more than stipulated minimum .

Group capatin nandiat sahani acting as first officer cum check pilot in this flight in hemeantime busied herself with self defense systems strting with the chaff flare dispensers, the rear turret mounted twin radar controlled guns the electronic counter measurement system is on stand by mode . Nandita really some time doubted the effectivenees of the rear twin gun mount in face of a determined aerial attack from a miarge or a falcon but still something is always better than nothing .

IL-76 which goes by the nato code name candid is perhaps one of the msot sucessful of all russian transport and have been used by indian air force in all sorts of missions fromdropping paratroops (maldives) carrying main battle tank t-72( ladakh) air to air refuelling (with a modified il-78 mki) and in aerial radar post cum command centre (phalcon) . the reason for such wide spectrum use can be linked to its comparitively powerfu quadra engines ,high lift wings with deflectable trailing and leading edge slats ,tripple slotted trailing edge extension flaps along with wing top spoilers and air brake gives the the candid unmatched rough field capability when matched against any other aircraft of its class .It is a standard componet of indian airforce contigents in thier overseas exercise missions along with its mkised sister il-78mki and together they have been singularly responsible for providing IAF with the much needed strategic reach.

-Dirty donkey -peswar tower- turn right heading 285 over
- peswar tower -dirty donkey -turning right 285

As the il 76 banked right the airtrafic controller at peswar atc tagged it as designate dindian airforce flight a standard radar identification procedure agreed by recentl;y concluded military protocol and then the airtrafic controllers did some thing unusal

- dirty donkey -peswar tower - turn left 260 -resume own navigation .
-pesswar tower -dirty donkey -turning left 260 -resuming own navigation

As wing commander joydeep turned the heading dial in auto pilot to 260 and the candid started its slow bank to the new course the agitated voice of the air tarfic controller came of the air trafic frequency

- Dirty donkey -peswar tower -we need assiatance -over
Group captain nandita sahani took command at the moment sensing some thing was grosslywrong
- peswar tower -this group captain nandita sahani aboard dirty donkey flight -please state nature of emergency
- -dirty donkey -we have lost radio contact with one of our f-16 flight in the vicinity of your flight path but the two falcons are still on our radar -can you please confirm thier position
- stand by peswar tower -doing the needful calmly replied group captain nandita sahani as joydeep looked perpleaxed at the sudden turn of events Nandita leaned forwardand quickly incerased the radar powersetting to max and immediately could locate thetwo falcons comming out of the race track holding pattern and now angling up on an intercept course for the united nationsa a-380 med aid flight .

she responded immediately

- peswar tower -dirty donkey -we see two falcons on intercept course to the united nations med aid flight to tehran -call sign med aid repaeat callsign med aid-suspect unauthorised intercept -please call them off

Her fingers were moving fast as she quickly connected to kandahar tower

- kandahar tower -dirty donkey flight - suspect unauthorised intercept of united nations med aid flight taking place some where over khost -request immedate assistance

Then she quickly change to international guard frequency and contacted the united nations flight

- med aid flight -this is indian airforce fligth dirty donkey -please respond
- med aid flight-this is indian airforce flight dirty donkey -please respond

This time the voice of commander lee came on tense and alert

- dirty donkey -un med aid flight - state your intention
- med aid -dirty donkey -we have reason to believe an unauthorised intercept of your flight is imminennt by pakisatni falcons in next 10 minutes -suggest you execute radical course and altitude change - indian interceptors are scrambling right now from kandahar - do your best to stay alive till then - please keep this frequency open

And then things strted to happen in very quick sequence

IAF TECHNICAL AREA -KANDAHAR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
----------------------------------------------------------------------
-scramble -scramble -scarmble blared the public address system in the hardened aircraft shelter and squadron leader ranjita saxena grabbedthe flight suite kitted up in less than one minue and rushed to the aluminium ladder to her mirage 2000 cockpit .The urgency in the voice of indian military air trafic controller was palpable

- red eye flight - you are cleared for immediate repeat immediate take off-all civilian and military trafic from this aircraft is on hold -we have an emergency situation in air -fly runway heading and climb to 30000 ft over
- tower-red eye flight message understood strting motor now said ranjita asshe jabbed the strted button and the snecma responded eagerly as she finished the instrument scan and released the parking brake behind her the wing man was doing the same and they both came out into the apron more less same time .The air wave was full of annoyed pilots whose flights have been unceremnoiusly put on hold as the two mirages quickly entered the runway and thunderd into morning sky .

DESSERT FALCON FLIGHT -0910 HRS BETWEEN KHOST AND PESWAR-30000FT .
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
F/L asgar slewed the target cursor over the four engined " indian transporter"flying steadily at 40000ft on its course to "kandahar" . It was a bit early but who can know the mind of hindu pilots and thier interpretation of of flight schedule thought asgar as he put the falcon on a wide banking turn to come from the back and below into a prefect heat seeker launch zone . .Theblip on the radar scope appeared to be some what large for an il-76 but he did not spend much time on it with 5 million us dollars clouding his usally sharp judgement .The real IL-76 was still out of his radar detection range and that sealed the fate of un a -380 .The cloud was thick and dark with moisture with occasional exytra high voltage discharge illuminating the darkened cockpit once in a while . But that was of little concern to asgar that he will not be able to visually identify the candid before opening fire after all he has been selected the fly the falcon because he was supposed to be one of the best pakistan has to offer .

His wing man followed him blindly totally dependent on the more experienced pilot to lead him to target and -death .

AS the distance to target diminished asgars right hand moved over the weapon station selectors and waiting just for a few seconds his right index finger pushed on the two extreme push buttons and the amber led display under his finger glowed on confirming the two side winders on wing tip pylons are now armed and ready to be fired . Liquid argonflowed from a small vacuum insualted container placed just behind the infrared seeker before the high explossive warhead and the seekers strted getting chilled down to nearly minus 187 degree celcius increasing the detection range several fold . It was not difficult for the sidewinders seeker to distinguish the hot exhaust plume of the a-380s quadra engines as the falcon closed in even though visually f/l asgar could see nothing .In a few minutes the locking circle over target turned red and the SHOOT prompt came up blinking urgently .

Asgar still did not shoot -he wanted to be doubly sure .With only two missiles there was no scope of mistake so he continued the loop around as slowly came behind the "indian " aircraft . As his right thumb gently touched the red wrinkled fire button he looked at the scope once again

THE AIM 9L side winder he was planning to launch in few seconds was a comparitively new version with comparitively new guidance system which made it a true all aspect missile and need not be locked on to the exhaust of an aircraft but can pick up the thermal sinature even from the wing edges .The annular blast fragmentation warhead is surrounded by a sheath of pre fragmentated rods and the armed with proximity fuse consisting of ring of gallium arsenide laser diodes and corresponding photodiodes . Which means it will not wait for positive contact to happen but the warhead will be fired even if the aircraft is within the letahal radius of the warhead as decided bu the intensity of the reflected laser beam.

This feature while amplifies the threat to any small combat aircraft for any large aircraft like the 380 it offered the only chance of hope.

F/L asgar knew Sidewinders are perhaps the most used air to air missile in modern air combat and also have maximum no of air to air kills .Some classic examples which came to his mind in a flash

- lt commander shot down an iraqi mig 21 with aim 9m
-during falklands war raf nimrods were fitted with sidewinders
- during iran iraq war irans airforce is reported to have killed 79 iraqi aircraft 79 of which 73 were killed with aim 9j and rest with aim 9p .45 of these aim 9 kills were fired from f4D/e phantoms ,25 by f-14a tomcats and rest none by f-5e tiger to platforms .

The "Dirty donkey" and "UN med" flights are authorized by Pak authorities.
Please read the previous posts.

The indian intercepter being airborn from Kandhar are on the way to protect UN med flight (which is being threatened by some rouge PAF poilets<------------ phalcon is here :) ).

DESERT FALCON FLIGHT -0920 HRS JUST OUTSIDE AFGAN BORDER NEAR KHOST
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
F/l asgar looked at hsi controls one last time as he tarcked the large four engined aircraft on his radar ad his head up display flickered with shoot command every 2 seconds as he approaced the airbus 380 from down and behind .What surprised him was why the indian transporter was taking any evasive action or turning on the electronic counter measures or deploying flares and chaff bundles as would be normal reaction of any seasoned air force pilot .But his time was running out too and he had a long risky journey to make over hostile airspace before he could lay his hands on the pile of cool greenbacks so though he did not recognise the target visually his right thumb closed in on the fire button which glowed red from the buily in LED.

The falcon was a part of new pakage finalised by bush adminitration as an aftermath of land mark indo-us nuclear deal which joined pakistan with 35 others and a a load of harpoons, amraams and jadams though no one really understood including the top brass in pentagon how a harpoon or an a,rram can possibly used against the terrorists .The harpoons particularly were more suited to attack in a congested environment like a particular ship say an aircraft carrier when surrounde by its escorts rather than a terrorist gunboat in open sea but then protest by indian govt fell intodeaf ears of us administartion who still could not give up its ally on war on terror ( which to most part of the world was synonomous to war for us interests and global domination game plan). The falcons came as a big pakage which consited of 36 f-16 blok 50 plus 130 latest version harpoon missiles ,500 amraam plus 200 odd aim 9 sidewinders two of which were about to be fired at the unarmed unmedical aid flight and also 500 plus JDAM kits for bombs . All for a good cause like fighting terroists and shooting down once in a while an unarmed wide bodied civilian aircraft .

The poished infrared dome which contained the cryogenically cooled seeker head was followed by the fore fins and just after that the data umblical which down loaded the target data about the a-380 from its speed.altitude ,heading ,rate of climb/dscent and probable postion of the target at the projected tie of impact in to the guidance chio of the missile.Just behind the umblival connector was the blast fragmentation warhead armed with laser proximity fuse then the venerable solid rocket motor which will propel the explossive warhead to the a-380 in a matter of seconds till the terminal guidance input from the infra seeker comes into play . At a total lenght of just under 9.5 ft and just under 6 inch dia the sidewinder is a slnder missile .The aft and fore hangers held the missile in position as the vital data got transfered and then it was ready to kill .The rollerons in the back were energised too and then in the cockpit F/L asgar sqeezed the pickle button . As the contact closed a tiny mili amp signal closed a slave relay which powered up the electromagnetic latches holding the fore and aft hanger in position and they opened up dropping the missile into theslip stream and at the same time the built in pyro ignited the solid rocket motor pushing the sllek missile effortlessly past speed of sound as it climbed to its prey few thousand feet up and few kms away .It could already sense the sweet hot smell of jet exhaust and it increased its speed as its own weight got burnt up and then the thermal seekers got the first scent of of the powwrful rolls royce engines and then there was no stopping as it bore up relentllessly towards the med aid flight with death and destruction written allover it .All that stood between certain death and life was the flying skill rather comabt flying skiil of its commander .

After 5 seconds f/l asgar decided to launch its second missile at the same target .

UN MED AID FLIGHT -OVER KHOST -40000 FT -0921 HRS
------------------------------------------------------------------
For the first time during the flight captain lee was relaxed as he crossed into afgan airspace and sipped into the cup of steaming hot black coffee .Below him there was nothing but the solid bank of cloud and in his radar he could see the small pakistani fighter crossing him and then turn into and then the urgent but commanding voice of group captain nandita sahani came over the guard channel

- un med aid flight -this is indian airforce flight dirty donkey- we confirm a missile launch possibly at you from the launch position and attacking aircraft vector - please initiate violent evasive manuvere immediately -we suspect it is a heat seeker possibly side winder

Captain lee could feel the drops of cold sweat forming up in his armpit and his airforce training took over as reflexes replaced voluntry action .In singapore airforce he has had numerous practices of avoiding sidewinders but all those were dummy practice rounds and the a-380 that he was flying now was no falcon

His hand flashed over the flare dispenser arming switch and as he flicked open the protective plastic and switched it to auto dispaensation mode he also pulled back the collective throttle all the way to stop and then after a few seconds of intense hesitation cut the engine no 1/4/2/3 and the powerful whine of rolls royce engine died down his first officer quickly entered the emergency engine shut down code into the light management system .

In the passenger deck there was shocked silence as the taem of medicos incredulously felt the engine noise die down and then the nose of the giant aircraft diped down and then came the assuring but some what tense voice of the commander from flight deck

- ladies ad gentlemen -this is your captain speaking - we have an in flight emergency which nesseciated shutting down the engines -please keep your seat belts fastened and get into crash landing position as shown in the flight safety card ......

Captain lee finished off the annoncement as quickly as possible and then put the aircraft at a 15 degree dive trying to get as low as possible before the missile hits so that the effect of any ressultant explossive decompression will be minimal on the passenger and also on the airfame .He also punched in the command oxygen masks to drop out of their recess over the passengers seats and strapped on his own . HUman body can stave of the oxygen deficeant atmosphere for about 45 seconds from the reserve oxygen contained in the blood straem and then the brain starts loosing its ability to command voluntry actions .

Thr first of the sidewinders curved out of the cloud bank and went straight for the flares disposed automatically from the tail fo the airbus 380 and exploded harmlessly . The second one however because of its delayed launch tracked the large aircraft better and there was no fooling this one even with all engine in power off mode it still retained enough residual heat for the seeker head to lock into it as a possible target and the at several tmes the speed of sound it crossed the diving air bus just under the port wing engine 1 and the laser proximity fuse blinked triggering the sharp explossion of the high explossive fragmentation warhead .

What saved the aircraft from total destruction was its dive angle and ultra sensitive fuse on the sidewinder . It triggered the detonation about 100 ft away from the wings spreading a lethal cloud of pre fragmented sharpnels over a wide arc .quite a few of which hit the port wing severing the fuel line and the hydraulics and sudenly a small fire errupted in both the port engines .Automated fire extinguishers switched on immediately and managed to extinguish the fires quickly before they have managed to spread to the wing fuel tanks .Fortunately all the engines were shut and quickly cooling down in the cold air at that altitude so the chances of secondary ignition was some what less .

- may day mayday may day ,captain lee spoke into the throat mike -this is united nations med aid flight 40 kms west of khost - we have at the moment we have lost all engine power and hydraulics pressure is low -maximum estimated glide envelope is two zero repeat twenty minutes -request direction to nearest airport and landing priority

- med aid flight -the only airport that can handle your aircraft is kandahar international came the calm voice of indian airforce senior tarfic controller over the radio waves - you are cleared for a straight in approach to runway 21 - 200 kms approx -course 275 -runway lenght 10800 ft -all vices on stand by -

-un med aid flight -this is dirty donky - the bandits have broken off -kandahar airport is at your 2 oclock -suggest make a slow descent and a direct approach - we are foolowing your descent -over
-thanks dirty donky - we are loosing control sensitivity but she is still responding -are we geeting some escorts
-roger that med aid indian mirages are 3 minutes out who will escort you all the way to kandahar

Captain lee once again punched in the new command of unpowered max range flight and the computer responded instantly leveling out the aircraft into a very shallow dive maintaining just enough indicated airspeed to provide minimum lift for the giant aicraft .The indiacted airspeed dipaly on the main console settles down slowly at 280 knots and vertical speed indiactor at a comfortable 1000 ft per minute as the worlds biggest unpoweerd glider made one last desperate attempt to land .Captain lee knew it would be a close call . He did not risk restarting the starboard engines as he was not sure what sort of damage they might have suffred.Miraculously there was no puncture in the pressure hull or the aft pressure bulhead and that in a way saved the day .

UN MED AID FLIGHT MID WAY BETWEEN KHOST AND KANDAHAR-0935 HRS
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Captain lee realised it was a mistake to to assume he would be safe once inside afgan airspace as the events proved but then though warned by the indian airforce pilot about a possible intercept it was not possible for him to undertake any evasive moves till a concrete idea about missiile launch location was available but still he still he should have been more careful he should have realised a rogue pilot has no respect for international border. But being a fighter pilot he did not dwell long o such psychological trivia and concentrated on getting the aircraft on ground . Though the ram air turbine has deployed automatically the hydraulic power was just over minimum that would be required for braking effort once the aircraft was on ground .The lights in the passenger deck which went off immediately after the missile hit have come back a lot dimmer once the auxilary power unit started up though unfortunately the seat back personalised tv and movie screen was still in power off mode .

The automated flight management system was again operating normally on standby power and the rate oddescent settled at 2450 ft per minute and indiacted airspeed at 282 knots just over the minimum cruise speed with flaps retracted for a-380. Lee was worried about turbulance as the altitude decresed steadily but he knew the chances of the aircraft flipping over or braeking up was almost nil though the passengers may suffer some injury if not strapped down tightly .He spoke quickly to the cabin crew and then once again checked the flying parameters and more imporatantly the distance to kandahar which slowly reduced and presently stood at just under 40 nautical miles but fortunately he had good tail wind and he hoped that will stay with him till the end .

Captain lee decided to land the aircraft at or near the runway where emergency services will be available .His map showed the kabul kandahar road running parallel to the kandahar main runway and that he decided as his alternate landing strip should he just fail to make the runway.Decicion made he decieded to contact the iaf aircraft following him

-dirty donkey -med aid -do you read
-go ahead -med aid came the cool and clear voice of nandita over the air waves.
- we have decided to land on kabul kandahar motorway in case cannot make it all the way to kandahar -hydraulics ok but pressure falling-have avionic and power from apu -do you have details of the road

- med aid-dirty donkey- kabul kandahar motorway is 4 lane all concrete road without central divider - it is almost straight between km 32.5 and 46
from kandahar - to keep this option open you need to change course slightly so as to come in from the north -what is your altitude

- dirty donkey present altitude is 23000 ft -estimated flight time left 12 minutes - indicated air speed 281 knots -rate of descent 2560 ft/min still on auto
- med aid -looks like landing on the road is for you the best option -you donot have the range to land at kandahar
- agreed dirty donkey replied captain lee he also has come to the same conclussion .
- ok then med aid change course 285 till 1000o ft then turn left 230 to allighn with the road - land on visual -trying to contact ground forces to provide area security -over
-message understood dirty donkey -changing course now

Nandita switched to reserved military frequency and contacted kandahar tower

-tower -dirty donkey -med aid preparing emergency landing on kabul -kandahar road beyween km 32.5 and 46 -please arrange stopping all trafic on the road and also let me have the the contact frequency of our forces in the area
-dirty donkey tower -alpha force is approaching the area - cobtacting them now - you can tune into ground tac net onfrequency -----

Group captain sahani transformed from a senior pilot to rescue coordinator in a matter of seconds and wing commander joydeep looked at awe at her sudden change -now he realised why this lady flier has topped the air force accademy and was the youngest group captain in indian air force .What he did not know was soon she will be the youngest air comodore of the force will be the air officer commanding of all indias heavy lift aircraft since that was still in future.

ALPHA GROUP - KABUL KANDAHAR ROAD-57 KM FROM KANDAHAR - 0939 HRS
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Major srinath scanned the road sides as the landscape became more hily and he was pressing the convoy hard to kep the patrol schedule as an authoritative female voice came on the tac net

- alpha force -this is group capatain nandita sahani on board airforce flight dirty donkey - we need your immediate assistance -over

Major srinath was more tan surprised to get a direct command from an senior airforce pilot on the secured tactical net but there was no reason to doubt since it will not be possible for any outsider to gain access to the tripple encrypted secured net work still he asked for authentication code changed every 3 hrs while he was o patrol and known only to kandahar control which co ordinated with strike aircrafts supporting him and vice versa .

- dirty donkey -alpha lead -please confirm current authentication and your personal identification

- alpha lead -current authentication is lima bravo delta delta zeta five three seven nine

- dirty donkey -alpha lead -accept authentication -personal identification please

- 39876 alpha gamma romeo alpha over came the quick response
It took major srinath precisly 10 seconds to get it confirmed from agra air base via his dedicated satelite data link which gave him a coloured mig shot also and he looked at the phot of a lady pilot in flying suit with hard facial lines and a proud no compromise face .Major srinath was impressed by what he saw .

-dirty donkey - pi confirmed -please go ahead madam
-alpha lead we have an emergency -united natons medical aid flight with 410 plus pax damaged by missile striek over khost and now contemplating crash landing on your patrol arae near grid co otdinates ---- . .Please extend all assitance immediately -expected touch down in less than 10 minutes - block trafic between grid sector ---- and grid sector in both directions asap and confirm -over

Major srinath did not become a special forces major by being slow or stupid he knew all the chances the striken aircraft has depended on on how quickly he can make the highway safe for the wide bodied aircraft land . Asharp command from him and the lead gypsy with light machine gun mounted on top whisked off towards kandahar its wheels screeching loudly as the driver took on all wheel drive over the asphault surface .Srinaths own position on the kandahar side of the runway was more less ok and he started scanning the cloud bank for the striken aircraft as the tac net come alive

- alpha lead - the aircraft type is airbus 380 -it is a twin deck wide bodied aircraft - once you have visual contact -please contact and confirm all wheels are down and in locked sorry in vertical position -stay away from the aircraft during landing but break open and rescue all survivors immediately the aircraft stops - possibility of severe fire very high -confirm message understood

-dirty donkey - alpha lead -shall confrm all wheels are down and vertical position -rescue immediately she stops - over -keeping line open for further instructions -over .

Where is Asgar. Given the speed of a phalcon,by now, would not be he using his aircraft gun to completely destroy the 'sailing' Aircraft??

DESSERT FALCON FLIGHT -F-16 X 2 0940 HRS
---------------------------------------------
F/L asgar was in a dilema . He never expected to miss such a large target with two side winders ,surprised at the timely deployment of the flares and the sharp dive with possible all engine off .The target aircraft was still flying and he had two options eiether to close in once again and finish off with his six barrled vulcan or just let it go and hope it will crash anyway .He did not want to use up his last of ammo since still he had to fly nearly 500 kms of hostile airspace before collecting his millions . He decided to break off and so did his wing man . At that moment his radar warning reciever started blipping
and he knew the indian mirages have locked on . As he dived for the deck and his chaff pakets strted streaming out automatically beack of his mind he knew the chances of hin collecting the greenbacks was indeed slim.

RED EYE FLIGHT MIRAGE 2000 X 2
------------------------------------------
Squadron leader ranjta saxena slewed the cursor over the lead falcon and clicked once to lock the target then repeated the process for the wing falcon and only then went to ask for weapon clearence

- tower -red eye -have two confirmed bandits -type falcon - request weapons free
The response from ground intercept controller came on immediately
-roger that red eye lead -you are weapons free on all targets - take care of the the med aid flight in the vicinity
- tower -weapons free-engaging now
Ranjitas left hand moved over the power lever pushing it all the way forward past the reheat gate and she could feel the after burner was lit by the sudden push in the back as the mirage acclerated sharply quickly crossing the sound barrier with barely a whimper and the shoot prompt came up on the head up display . She waited for a few more seconds as she took a turning six g dive after the escaping f-16 came out of the clound cover and in the distance could see the unmistakable shape of two falcons and then selected weapon station 3 and 5 arming up the two radar guided micas and qeezed the trigger twice as the missiles broke free and leaped towards the targets she kept up the forward momentum for some time and this time selected the weapon station 1 and 6 which held the infra guided micas and launched them also again one at each target .As she broke off pulling out of reheat she could see her wingman closing in for a decisive shot if required .

It was not .

The lead falcon of f/l asgar did manage to evade the first mica as it executed a vertical charlie on after burner and neatly deploying the flares but as it came out of the loop the hot tails were exposed to the infra guided mica which was too big a target for the missile to miss .The second mica went into the tail pipe and exploded ripping the falcon out of sky and quickly changing a dream flying machine into a mass of burning scrap .F/L asgar did not eject and with him died the dreams of quick millions .

His wingman was some what lucky .Seeing his lead disintegrate and his radar warning reciever blowing his eardrums off he pulled the ejection handle and the 0/0 martin baker ejection seat took him out of the harms way before the both the missiles hit the aircraft unerringly turning it into a fireball .

But f/l asgar did manage to do one thing before his death -he radioed to his ground contact (dilshad khan ) about the possibility of the target making a crash landing and maximum distance it can possibly travel without power before it must land .

Spy Story: Part 2

President Chuck Hagel paced around in front of his desk, which is surprisingly simple for the most powerful man in the world. In his life as a government official, top financial executive and senator, he had seen and involved in many major screwups. He also witnessed many commited by the various leaders including Richard Nixon, Bill Clinton and even George W Bush. But the current situation is different, because now HE is responsible. Even though it was the idea of his Director of Intelligence Agencies, and it was endorsed by the Secretary of State and National Security Advisor, he very well knew that the buck stopped at his table. At the present political situation, he and the country can not afford to have any egg on the face. But he very well knew that it is not egg, but some unmentionable substance is going to hit the fan soon. In the history of the United States of America, there are a number of dirty things various administrations did with other countries and governments, but much of them didn't come to light. Whatever actually came to light were silly things like the Contra revolutionary scandal. Certain things came out as conspiracy theories like the assassination attempt of Fidel Castro. But most of the actions were covered up by force, bribe or diplomacy. That history did give President Hagel some consolation, but he was not too sure about the other side in this game. In his own words, the "bloody Indians".

And to think that those bloody Indians outsmarted the best the CIA could come up with! A couple of relatively rookie operatives of the relatively new National Security Services (or so the CIA guys says its name is) of one of the third world countries very effectively distroyed the efforts of the well seasoned CIA operatives. That is unbelievable. To bring insult to injury, the CIA crypto center has warned yesterday that they suspect that the level 4 encryption used by foreign liaison group might be broken by the Indians. The biggest blunder probably was giving the system to that goshdarn Musharraf. He was fool enough to use it over his internet connection. God bless this country when a bunch of strangers can get into a vital infrastructure and install snooping devices there. The Indians got a ton of data and no wonder they are able to crack the code.

Vice president Rice was right. Hagel hated himself to admit that. She would have been here in the oval office if the hidden racist/sexist elements of the party were not be expertly manipulated. Everybody in the american populace wanted a Condi-Hilary runoff, but eventually it was the black horse Chuck Hagel of Nebraska who got the ticket by making Condi his running mate.

When the current situation was being schemed, Dr. rice, being the sharpest tool in the box, was averse to the idea from the beginning. But no one wanted another Dick Cheney around, so her position itself spoke against her opinion. Eventually the decision was piloted by Dan Kruger, the career CIA burocrat who was appointed Director of Intelligence Agencies, aka Intelligence czar. All being said and done, Chuck Hagel have a big pile of problem in front of him.

There was a knock and Condoleezza Rice entered the room. Chuck Hagel and she never had a cordial relationship. Either side knew that he took away what most americans thought was rightfully hers. But she knew her role, and considering her relatively young age, she have practically an assured ticket come 2016. She knew her boss is in trouble, and it is the best interest of her and the country to help fix the problem.

Dr Rice contributed a lot to craft the improved relationship between USA and India when she was Secretary of State during the second term of George W Bush. It was she who piloted the civil nuclear co operation deal, and also she had developed a very cordial relationship with the leaders of that country. It might come handy in the current situation. The question the President wanted answered is whether to contact the Indian PM as a pre emtive move or not. The CIA has given a detailed report on what the Indians are likely to know and what they are likely to do. There were three options, and one of them is to open up and play nice with the Indians. Dr. Rice is the best person to do that.

But chuck Hagel again underestimated Dr. Rice. She really knew what is going on, and had more ideas that he could fathom. But once again, her position seemed to play against her opinion.

The meeting of the two top officials of the country lasted slightly more than an hour. It immediately followed by a meeting with the cabinet in the west wing conference room.

And the decision was to run one of the most rigourous cover up operation the CIA has ever undertaken. Once again, the CIA had grossly underestimated the National Security Services of India. The cat and mouse game has started when a cell phone call was made from just outside Langley. This is a new kind of war and it will see new kind of warriors, weapons and tactics.

Yaajnavalkya said: The truth is covered by a Golden Bowl. Maaya tries to hide it, and wise men try to uncover it. The spy story, thus took a new turn.

Spy Story: The Company

The foreign intelligence operations of India was the responsibility of the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW or simply RAW) of the Cabinet Secretariat. It is established in 1968, and reports to the PMO directly. Its operations and structure are not revealed to the parliament. Very little is known in public media about this organization. The domestic intelligence is handled by the Intelligence Bureau and there is also the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA). As per convention, the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC) under the Cabinet Secretariat is responsible for co-ordinating and analyzing intelligence activities between these agencies. However, this was often not being done efficiently. when the National Security Council was formed in 1999 the JIC was merged with it.

Initially the external threat perspective for India was Pakistan and China centric and ost of the operations of RAW was concentrated in that area. a great deal of the assets and budget are in fact concentrated in that direction. However, as the new millenium came, the position of India in the world scene has changed and RAW struggled to adapt to the new realities.

In 2004, a major setback happened. A very senior official of RAW went missing, and though no official information came forth for some time, everyone knew where he has gone. After some time, and very reluctantly, the government acknowledged the defection and declared that it will take action. When the top management of RAw changed, one of the immediate tasks the new director had at hand was to revamp the organization and make it capable to face the challenges of the new world. and he did something that nobody thought of before. He decided to exploit what we had best.

A company by name RHS Technologies Pvt. Ltd. was launched at Delhi. The only information about its ownership was lying somewhere in the registrar of companies office at New Delhi, and it mentioned the President of India as the sole shareholder of the company. Also there was a small outcry when a very bright IAS officer quit the service and joined a private startup. The official business of the company was to provide IT security services.

In a short time, a number of officers in the three intelligence agencies had meetings at the RAW headquarters at Lodhi road and they got deputation offers to a still unknown department. Later, people from different wakes of careers also started getting calls from "recruiting agencies" offering them "exciting job options".

The new organization ran in the virtual world provided by RHS Technologies. The numerous field offices and headquarters were interconnected over its secure network. Nobody really new even the name of the new organization, because each unit saw the organization differently, with different identifications. No single location, exept the Director and the NSA's office, could get a full picture of the organization. The network ran on dedicated lines leased from BSNL and VSNL, and used a proprietary encryption system. Secure hardware codecs are issued to the operatives to secure their equipment. Each system included an internet gateway that allowed the operatives to use regular Internet when away from their offices.

And the company was in full business when the crisis of 2008 hit, and today, in 2010, it plays the central role in the national security area. We have seen parts of it in action already, and to quote Paul Harvey of ABC, "Now you know..., the rrrrrest of the story.

Spy Story: The Golden Bowl

Pervez Musharraf fumed sitting in his chair. The man was not used to sitting in a grossly uncomfortable chair possibly bought on sale at OfficeMax. He was alone, and he really missed his grandson, with whom he had made a strong bond. Hamza was a bright kid and brought sunshine to the exiled life of the ex dictator of Pakistan. Life at the Napa mansion was good, but like all good things, it had to end. Bilal and family had to move to a home in the Los Altos hills which didn't come anywhere near to the mansion. His business is not doing good either. Musharraf had to move into this rusty apartment in the outskirts of Richmond, VA. Let alone the apartment was below anything he lived after being made a colonel in the Pakistan Army, he couldn't take the 24 hours watch on him placed by the CIA guys. He was not allowed even take a walk in the park. He had to live on takeout food bought in by the handlers, and he suspected that they chose the cheapest lot that tasted worse than wet cardboard.

And he didn't have a computer or cell phone. His land line didn't connect to the network directly, and all calls are operator assisted. Bilal was the only person called in, and not so surprisingly, most of the outgoing calls requested never materialized. It was too much. Even his call to Crawford, Texas for his closest ally in USA didn't go through. He was not sure if Bush knew about his predicament, and even if he did, he was not sure if he can be of any help.

He was a prisoner and he knew it. It was not something he bargained for. He cursed the moment when he thought of making a plot against that darned Yusuf. To think about it, it may not have been entirely his idea. The CIA guys who worked with him those days seemed to give too many suggestions and alterations. Upon retrospect, it was all their idea and he was very craftily brought in to the plot. He was so enraged against Yusuf to realize that. He didn't know what happened to the plot. The last piece of information was some online reports about the Indians intercepting the device somewhere in Bombay. If that is true, the plan went well. He was literally yanked out of the place the next day, and he was totally in dark after that. He didn't know if the Indians attacked Pakistan yet, and he didn't know what his co conspirators are doing now.

On top of all, he didn't know what is going to happen to HIM

His alarm clock chimed. It is time for Magrib Namaaz. The only thing gave comfort to him now is the prayer, that he used to be very glad to miss earlier. He rose from the chair and walked to the bathroom to do the ritual cleanup.

He had an appointment with God.

UN MED AID FLIGHT -0952 HRS -7500 FT -OVER KABUL KANDAHAR EXPRESSWAY
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Captain lee started his emergency landing procedure checklist as the airspeed started decreasing alarmingly and the a-380 became sluggish as the controls encountered denser turbulant air at lower altitude. While everything was still being done by the automated flight management system lee was not sure how good it was after the missile strike few minutes back.

-flaps full 45 degree - o.k confirmed his first officer visually confirming after a glance over his shoulder
-slates deploy - o.k
-hydraulic pressure - 270 bar - o.k
- rate of descent - 1500 ft per minute -o.k (way over the normal max rate of descent of about 500 ft/min but at that specified descent rate the airbus will not maintain the minimum approach speed )
- trim set for landing
- altitude - 4500 ft intones his xo ,air speed 170 knost
-lower undercariage commanded lee and both of the pilots held their collective breadth as the 22 wheel massive undercarriage took few seconds to lower against the slipstream and then with a thud locked into position .
-undercarriage down and locked into position reported his xo all in green .The three green lights on the panel was the the most comfortable sight to commander lee as the giant aircraft came out of low cloud celing and before him streched the concrete ribbon of kabul kandahar road.

ALPHA FORCE -KABUL KANDAHAR ROAD -0954 HRS
-------------------------------------------------------------
major srinath looked with awe at the massive twin deck aircraft as it gracefully came out of the cloud bank and angled for the straight piece of concrete which he and his team mates have so desperately managed to clear off all trafic for this emergency landing . Arguments and choicest explitives were being exchanged on both sides of the bloked road both in hindi and pashtu as local drivers vehmently protested to the indian soldiers about being stopped and tempers were running high .An ugly situation could break out any moment thought srinath and he quickly spoke into his throat mike and the small contingent of indian troops quitened down as they took up a defensive position around the road blocks .

And then all conversation died down as the majestic a-380 came down sharply from the kabul side of the blocked runway its size increasing every second and then touched down with massive thump swerved a little and then straightend down and rushed forward on the main landing gear the nose wheel still in air for some time and then the nose wheel made ground contact . The wheels strted bursting up like popcorn at this unusally high landing speed and for a moment it looked the giant aircraft will loose control and tip over but some how it stayed on the road

UN MED AID FLIGHT -0956 HRS
-------------------------------------
Captain lee could feel the hard landing bump right thru his cushioned seat as the a-380 made ground contact . The brakes were already set in max auto mode and they screeched to bring the aircraft to a safe stop .
The air bus had thrust reversers fitted into only two of his engines the engine no 2 and 3 that too after faa refused to certify the aircraft unless thrust reversers were incorporated since originally a-380 was designed to stop only with braking power . As each tyre burst the giant aircraft lurched violently but still stayed on course some what .Lee hoped the passengers have taken the crash landing well atleast without much serious injury at least there will no shortage of mediacl help this time thought he as the aircraft slowly came to a stop barely 50 ft from the tracked army vehicle parked across the road as a temporary road block .

- cabin crew initiate emergency evacution procedure immediately
- the shaken voice of flight purser came over the internet -ok sir -he appeared to be in great pain .

And then the emergency chuted deployed all around and first of the shaken and bruised passengers started sliding down .In the distance he could see the army geeps moving towards the aircraft .

Only then he slumped forward on his straps unconcious .

LPHA FORCE -APPROACHING UN MED AID FLIGHT - KABUL KANDAHAR ROAD
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Major srinath floored the gas pedal of his command gypsy as he followed the damaged super jumbo over the rough ground at more than 100 kms/hr still the airbus was too fast for him for the first 2 minutes and he could see the tyres bursting all around as the brake shoes pushed hard against the drum at maximum pressure and the wheels tumbled over the rough road surface at more than 200 kms/hr and then he heard the thrust reversers come into paly and then the aircraft started slowing down and then came to a halt .He was almost level with the aircraft as the doors opened outward and inflated escape chutes tcame out .But still no passengers were outside . As he ordered his med to get inside and get them out he also contacted group captain nandita sahani on the air ground net

- dirty donkey -we have the un flight on ground -emergency chutes deployed but still no passengers -advise -alpha lead over
-alpha lead -possible serious injury to cabin crew and passengers in forward section of the aircraft including pilots -please accord immediate assistance - tell your men to go in and get the pax out -cut open the aicraft hull if required but stay away from the wings and central part of the air frame which may have some residual jet fuel -over
-message understood dirty donkey - still no chance sign of fire -over -alpha lead
-alpha lead-fire can berak out any time - go-go -go faster you get those pax out the better - do you have any fire extinguishers with you over
-affirmative madam - we have 6 15 kg foam type for the BMPs over
-alpha lead use them to cool down the hot engines and undercarraige -over

And then the small team of special forces swung into action in an unfamiliar teritory guided from above they hacked thier way into the airbus bodily pulling out the dazed and injured passengers and dropping
them on the inflated chutes at a pace which would have put to shame any trained rescue team .Still it was hard and risky work almost 300 passengers were out and then thier luck ran out

No one has noticed the slow tricle of jet fuel from the almost empty fuel tank dropping on the short circuited cable which supplies power to the f uel guages in the centre line fuel tank . Slowly over the minutes an explossive fuel air mixture formed around the cable and then it ignited as the hot nicrome wire burmt out with a shower of spark , The whole centre part fo the aircraft went up in flames with alarge whoosh incinerating the 100 od passengers and about 30 odd special forces personnel still too busy inside trying to rescue trapped unconcious passengers inside .

Outside some distance awy major srinath watched in disbelief as almost his entire patrol went up in flames and he along with his remaining team was left to take care f the 300 odd injured paasengers in he midst of taliban dominated region of afganisatn .

- dirty donky -we have a problem-came the agitated voice of srikanth,
the aircraft just went up in flames and i have lost most of my patrol engaged in rescue work with it -request immediate reinforcement

-sorry to hear that major -came the strong and comforting voice of nandita over the air waves ,please stay away from the fire as chances of large explossions is likely - most of the passengers are medical doctors and some them should be able to help you with the first aid activities - reinforcements on the way .

Behind her the paras were already taking up position to jump without a word being spoken and that inluded thieir leader so she did what she was best bringing the il-76 to a para drop profile along the wind and slowing down to 280 knots and reducing altitude to 8000 ft as she executed a perfect port bank at 5 degree to bering her aircraft over the best possibel drop zone near the place where the airbus has landed and then engaged the lever which slowly actuated the hydraulic arm that openes the rear clam shell ramp . The paras strted jumping out two at a time with an interval of 10 seconds within two minutes they were ll out and gone .

Major srinath will not be alone after all .

Shankar - minor nitpick ~ modern aircraft use disc brakes, not the drum type. Disc brakes are superior to drums in every aspect except as a parking brake due to their tendency to lock.

DILSHAD KHANS GROUP 4XT-72 + 12 ARMED TOYOTAS
----------------------------------------------------------------
Dilshad khan waited impatiently with his "action group" on standy reday to take on the survivors the moment observers confirm the location of the crash. His whole plan hinged on taking a group of internationaly renowned hostages and then doing the "needful" live in colour . He was sure once that objective i achieved the world public opinion will soon turn to outrage and demand immediate withdrawl of all indian forces from afganistaneven if that does not include usa and china both of whom have thier own interests to see indian troops stay on.

He did not have long to wait -the cell blipped and the pashtu code words were precise and sharp . The unflight have some how managed to crash land near kandahar on the kabul-kandahar road . The observer located some distance away from the crash site have seen most of the survivors rescued before the aircraft caught fire . A small contingent of indian road patrol was on the scene and was responsible for saving most of the lives. The enemy force was reported to be small and they had only a pair fo tracked armoured pesonnel carriers along with couple of indian geeps equipped with light machine guns and maybe some anti tank weapons in form of carl gustav /nag anti tank mssiles .He did not consider it to be a serious threat to his 4 T-72s and more than a dozen armed toyotas barely 2 hrs drive away .

He knew time was of essence he has to overcome the enemy forces with overwhelming force before reinforcements arrive .If in the process some of the valuablehostages are lost -so be it all for a noble cause .

As he issued the crisp command on his walkie talkie the the four armoured giants came alive .turrets open they rushed over the rough ground towards the reported crash site . The dozen odd toyotas followed suite surronding the t-72s on all sides a brutal tactics developed to protect the valuable tanks . Toyotas and thier occupants were after all expendable .

IT was not a bad plan .enjoying numerical superiority over the percieved small indian army contingent and ofcourse the devastating firepower of 125 mm main gun of the t-72 s ,the battle would be some what biased thought dilshad khan as he jumped up on his command vehicle in the distance he could see the dust plume of the armoured giants as they raced foward at max speed achievable over rough ground .

Dilshas was right and wrong .he did not yet know the additioanal paras that have already jumped from the il-76 and at the moment touching rgound in one and twos and quickly forming up concentric defensive rings around the crash survivors .He also did not know about the two mirages were on thier final approach to kandahar airfield and ground crews were waiting for them with full lad of 57 mm rockets and 250 kg laser guieded bombs .He also did not know the il-76 have now taken on the role of of an flying battle command post with one of the most experience pilots of indian airforce at the helm ,he also did not know about the six hawks in the hardened shelters in kandahar airfield which was taking on a load of clusters and napalms to provide the second line of striek package abouy to take to skies .In short he did not know the phalcon flying 300 km to the
north east had been watching his forces for quite some time and have already triggerd the counter punch moment it spotted the multiple dust trail fo the t-72s.

Spy Story: The Golden Bowl

Sanjeev Gupta cursed himself. He was glad that his part of the game was played very successfully and the guys in Dubai and Singapore took over and played it to the end. But it is coming back at him to bite. The darned government need more evidence. What do they think? Did any of them worked in the field, fighting everything including the miserly beancounters at the consulate, the crazy FBI tags, murderous San Francisco traffic, unscrupulous field agents and everything else. He had a very difficult time pulling off what he already did, and where is he going to turn for more. He had no idea. Ever since the operations moved from the burocrats of RAW into the new outfit, life for the old RAW hands like Sanjeev became miserable. Earlier there was a system that everyone respected, and to an extent protected them. Now the environment changed from the government office to that of an IT company as far as work is concerned. But many of the old burocracy remained to make life inconvenient. Sanjeev got the worst. He had joined the government service only 2 years when the ops moved to the new outfit. So, he ended up neither here or there.

At least he had the fortune of working with two good field ops. Poor Sergio Sanchez got into a lot of trouble with his involvement in the case. He can't be used anymore at undercover though. He got out of the felony charges thanx to his Indian lawyer based on some legal loophole, and he is back working at a wineyard at Santa Rosa. They were supposed to meet at the KFC at Windsor. Sanjeev needed some help with agent Jeff Boger of FBI that Elina Perez couldn't do. Sergio is bringing a friend who might be able to help.

"Good Afternoon' Mr. Vyas". Sergio greeted Sanjeev and turned to the tall dark mexican man in his fifties who accompanied him. "This is me amigo Rafael Garcia."

"I'm Mahendra Vyas" Sanjeev said by means of introduction and shook hands with Rafael, feeling a strong warm grip that incited confidence.

And a business discussion, if we can call it so, ensued in the mostly deserted fast food joint fueled with crispy fried chicken and hot barbeque wings.

Spy Story: The Golden Bowl
Ahmed Faruq shifted down on his spanking new Lexus at the intersection of Jalan Depen Jaram and Jalan Hanthumahar. He eased the car through the free right turn, yielding to a slow pickup truck in the lane. Through the corner of his eye, he saw the old rustry truck coming in from the driveway to the right. He instinctively swerved to the left, but another car blocked his way. Panicked he hit the brake hard and felt the jolt of a rear end collision. Within a fraction of a second, the brand new luxury car was practically crushed from all four sides as the pick up he yielded to moments ago braked and let the Lexus rear end it. The rusty old truck crashed into the Lexus from the right and the old ford escort on the left simply boxed it in. All cars stopped, blocking both the westbound lanes on Jalan Depen Jaram. Before anyone realized what is going on, the driver side door of the Lexus is yanked open and a stunned Faruq was yanked out from under the still deflating airbag. He was pulled into the rear seat of the escort in an instant. The Escort that was not technically a part in the accident just drove away, carrying the struggling body of the owner of Usman Faruq Industries Sdn Bhd.

The driver of the Escort flipped his cell phone open and made a very brief call. The car took a right at the next intersection.

He didn't notice the black Mitsubishi Pajero taking the same turn. Both vehicles proceeded along the road to the small marina on the bank of the river Barito.

The city police of Banjarmasin don't have a reputation of attending to accidents immediately, and when they did, they were susprised to see a federal police vehicle parked at the site. And we can't say whether the officers were angry or happy when they were advised that the feds are going to handle the case themselves. They just nodded and went on their way. The feds swarmed the scene, and they seemed to be not too much surprised to see the Lexus driverless. The vehicle was immediately identified as belonging to Mr. Ahmed Faruq and necessary paperwork was done to notify the relatives.

The next day dawned at Banjarmasin with stories of the accident and a lot of conspiracy theories about what happened to Ahmed Faruq. Only a few men knew the truth, and some of them didn't know the others knew.

Spy Story: The Golden Bowl

The men who manned the Haji Moosa were very much disturbed after their chartered voyage to the Lakshadweep. The story they told was that they had an engine failure and they were swept north, and had to land at Goa, before getting the engine fixed there and return to Beypore. And they lost their master laskar en route to a freak accident, where a rigging broke and swept him into the sea. Generally the story was accepted around. Not many people knew Aliyar, as he was a new guy, recently migrated from the south. Sainuddin the policeman took it on himself to inform Aliyar's family and do the necessary paperwork for the insurance etc. The issue was thus almost settled.

But the family of some of the crew became a little bit concerned about the men, because they appeared to be a little bit unbalanced psychologically. They appeared to be very scared and hiding something. Repeated questions from concerned parents and spouses yielded nothing.

For the next voyage, all except two of the crew reported for duty. The two men had joined another boat down at Ponnani. But two strange things happened in quick succession.

The Haji Moosa did not return from her short hop up to Mangalore, and a motorbike accident on NH17 killed the two crew members. Haji Moosa left no traces. No radio calls, and even though the crew had cell phones and during most part of their voyage they were in range of the coastal cells, no cell calls. The boat and her crew vanished without a trace.

So, anything that could have shed some light on the misterious journey of the Haji Moosa went under. Though the organization had no feeling and its policy didn't support actions based on feelings, Sainuddin and Muhammad Faizal was not going to let the incident go un noticed. Sainuddin took it on himself to approach his superiors in the police force and Faizal turned into his news paper reporter friends.

They wanted revenge, and they didn't care who is at the other end.

In case India goes to war with Pakistan or China at anytime. What kind of strategy or war plan should they adopt.

Imagine you are a high ranking official in the defence ministry for developing new war plans or doctrines. What will your plan be in terms of a short term or long term conflict with any of these countries. Please be rational.

Thanks Dileep but I was thinking not in terms of a story but as a military to outline the strategy. For example if we went to war with Pakistan this would be my plan

1. complete naval blockade of all shipping routes out of Puki land.
2. special forces to neutralize all nuclear installations.
3. deploy Jaguars n Mirages in Srinagar, Uttarlai, Ambala etc for close air support.
4. Sukhois mostly for air defence of miltary and nuclear installations and commercial and urban centres.
5. Mig-21s for air defence of airfields and other forward bases.
6. Phalcons(if operational) will be playing a more defensive rather than offensive role.
7. Harriers to disable fuel dumps and shipyard facilities at Gwadar and Karachi.
8. Helicopter gunships will be mostly deployed in the J&K front since I doubt there operational capability in the desert regions. Mig23, Mig27 and Mig29 for bombing in the desert regions.
9. I think the J&K battles will involve largely artillery and a lot of manpower. T-90s, T-72s and possibly Arjuns deployed largely in desert and Punjab sectors.
10. Infantry batalions will hold positions in the Punjab and N Rajasthan sector. Close air support provided by Mig-21s due to the proximity of large number of airbases around that region. 1 sqn of Su-30Ks and a Phalcon will be deployed solely for the purpose of defending the strategic installations in Gujarat and the Arabian Sea.
11. LACM version of Brahmos mostly used to destroy Command and control centers and disable airfields.
12. I don't support the idea of a saturated attack using rockets or Prithvis. Use of ballastic missiles can make the conflict hairy. Rocket deployment mostly in the Kargil sector to make sure terrorist attacks can be suppressed in minutes.
14. SA-3 defence for large cities like Delhi and Mumbai can bearly withstand any kind of air attack or even a LACM attack. I would rather use the Green Pine radar with air defence suuport from Mig29s and may be Su-30MKI.
15. A missile attack to interior parts of India from Pakistan is inevitable in the early stages of the conflict. The only option is to suppress them at early stages. Special forces, Mirages and Sukhois(to protect Mirages) are needed to destroy these locations or the consequences can be ugly.

I'll end my post now. I know I have not accounted for a lot of possibilities. Just keep adding to this. :D

KABUL KANDAHAR ROAD- UN MED AID GROUP
----------------------------------------------------
Major srinath watched the destruction of the the giant aircraft in total silence and at his small group of special forces soldiers spread out around with their small arms and light anti tank weapons readt todefend the survivors at any cost . But deep in his mind he knew that will be a difficult atsk under the best of circumstances and he refused to consider the worst case scenario .

In the distance the dust plume of the advancing t-72s have died down and that could mean only one thing -the fagans knew of his anti tank capability and was hesitant to make a direct frontal assault even with overwhelming armoured supriority in broad daylight . The have slowly encircled the med aid group with its embeded indian escorts and now the deadly 125 guns started changing elevation getting in line for max range saturation bombardment ,most likely with high explossive shell since both the bmp3 s were carefully hidden behind the boulders and there were no clear target for the armour piercing rounds .

Major srinaths deductions were in fact absolutely on the mark .Dilshad khan knew too much from his armour warfare experience with soviet army the hazzards of approaching a well entrenched infantry company armed and trained to take on heavy tanks in a forward charge tht shown in movies .

The first of the shells landed in five minutes and then the second after three minutes and then the third and then the fourth .It was not exactly an accurate arty barrage but it was not required to be . The first to go were the gypsies which exploded like hot hot pop corns as the sharpnels from the high explossive anti tank rounds peppered their gas tanks and the gasoline ignites in a series of blinding blue flash .

The med aid flight survivors coweerd in thier hastily dug out shelters as death moved all around them ,the deadly defeaning concussion of the high explossive shells hurt even when they could not get a direct hit the heat and sound were also death in a diffrent form . The first casuality was swiss doctor who came out of the hole in the ground with blood streaming from both ears and did not even know when metal sharpnels from the second shell tore him in to pieces in neat surgical way and the cartoid artery kept on pumpin blood even long after brain has given up the struugle to stay alive .

Then the nightmare came alive with the afgan tanks fired three consecutive salvos of 4 shells each into the defenders . While the death toll was not very high the number of seriously injured increased exponentially . The living shared the shallo fox holes with the dead and injured as the carnage outside continued . By the time the tanks stopped firing 47 more of the med aid group were dead and more than 150 injured

Major srinath knew he cannot take one more round of such bombardment .He did not even know why the afgans have stopped shelling suddenly but just hoped to god thier guns have jammed or the commander was waiting for the night to come and he prayed the air force jocks do soem thing quickly because after another round they will not have anything to defend for in the first place.

DILSHAD KHANS GROUP -3.8 KMS FROM MED AID SURVIVORS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dilshad khan was furious .It has taken him more than 5 minutes to make his tank commanders understand the objective of the mission was capture the survivors and not kill them en mass with long range tank fire .The over enthusiatic tank commanders were happily firing awy the precious 125 mm shells as if there is no tomorrow .The four t-72s only had 16 shells in thier magazine at start and only half of them were high explossive type rest were all armour piercing . About half of them were already expended and the indian counter attack has not even started

He ordered his toyota groups to move forward .All of them were armed with soviet light machine guns on swivel mount and at least one mujahideen with rpg launcher.

KANDAHAR AIRPORT - IAF TECHNICAL AREA
---------------------------------------------------
Sqadron leader ranjita saxena was tired as she strapped into her seat once again and looked back at her wing man and small flight of six hawks all fueled up . Both the mirage 2000 were armed with only 57 mm rocket pods and mica air to missiles for the remote possibility that the mujahidens friends from across the border might get bold enough to intervene .The hawks were all equiped with 500 kgs clusters except the last two which were loaded up with twin 250 kg napalm cannisters .As the canopy closed around her and her years of training took over pushing back the tiredness of last few hours her left hand moved over the radio transmit button as her eyes started thier practiced scan over the instruments and displays for another crucial combat sortie.
