Possible Indian Military Scenarios - Part I

Post by Singha »

We shall use this thread to pen down possible military scenarios that India might face in the future. It can be one post incident reports, or entire 'books' spread into many many posts. comments are permitted and welcome to be interleaved between the fiction. any military topic ranging from spying, intel, active military ops , Govt situation room scenarios can be posted.

My first project is going to be a indian attack on BD in response to their grave provocations. most of it will be in the third person narrative because writing person to person dialogue and getting it right takes enormous amout of time and reworking for a person not experienced at it.

Story: The Awakening
Post: #1 " The birth of the New Order "
(the story is purely fictional and bears no resemblence to people
living or dead )

Dec 10, 2007

News about incidents in Dhaka began to filter the newswires at
8:00AM in the morning BST. It was 8:30AM in Delhi. As a matter of routine the RAW duty officer attached to PMO got the note from the diplomatic news room in the external affairs ministry. Reading it briefly he concluded it was serious enough to contact the PM immediately. He walked to the underground bunker beneath the PM's residence.....

Prime minister Arora was on a tour to jaipur area - inaugurating some new highways and infrastructure. It took until 11:00AM for him to cancel all prior engagements and fly back on a IAF helicopter to Delhi. Orders were given to have the CCS assemble at PM residence for a meeting, people gathered and waited...nervously talking among themselves. By now the international media was spreading the news far and wide.

A series of meetings were held that day, first the CCS, then with the armed forces chiefs and COAS, then in the evening with senior opposition and party leaders.

******

Dhaka was in a fluid state. At 7:15AM , units of the BD army had stormed various points of the capital , taking over Govt buildings, blocking intersections, surrounding the diplomatic enclave, halting all flights in and out of the airport. Stray sounds of shooting and grenades punctuated the haze of the cool december morning until 12 noon. There was spirited resistance by the security detail posted in PM Madam's house
who held off the intruders for 3 hours. Finally, fearful observers reported seeing 2 T-55 tanks entering the area, followed by sounds of firing from the main cannon. The resistance was crushed.

Dhaka university was stormed by a batallion of elite BD infantry. Always a hotbed of political activity, students had to be neutralized in the first hours of any revolution, so said the Book. Hostels were cordoned off, rooms were searched, JeI spies accompanied the army into the hostels..working from prepared lists they quickly identified anyone with potential for leadership .. a troublemaker...all such were detained and sent in army trucks outside the city (villagers would later discover freshly dug graves near a limestone quarry 50km outside the city)

The BD people, accustomed as they were to chaos and insecurity tried their best to weather the storm. The army units did not molest them just frisked for arms at the checkpoints and let them proceed. Some improntu gatherings of political workers were quickly snuffed out, there were no leaders, all leaders had been efficiently arrested in the first hour.

At 12:00 noon a broadcast came out on BD TV and radio channels. Army chief Jaffar Ahmed looking very composed in a fresh tunic bearing his ex-paracommando badge addressed the nation.

"My fellow citizens, as you may already be aware there has been a change of govt in Dhaka effective since this morning.
For a decade we have watched the two political parties fight and squander our nations resources. They have done nothing for you, they have failed you and they have failed to be true to our Faith. The army has watched as all the institutions and concepts we hold dear have been defiled. we can no longer watch the slow destruction of our country, our culture and our way of life. as guarantors of the country's security we had to act and we have done so. Ins'allah we shall succeed and for this we seek your prayers and blessings!

Effective immediately I am the President of BD, a ruling council
of six generals drawn from all the services will look after ministeral affairs. They will nominate other officials soon.

Martial law has been declared. No attempt to disturb the peace or spoil the law and order will be tolerated! when the situation improves a restoration of civil liberties will be arranged.

The salient points of the new direction , the New Deal for our
country is as follows.

* Diplomatic relations with India will be terminated as of now.
We are not happy with India's meddling in our internal affairs, their harassment of BD at international forums with false accusations of terrorism and migration. we reject all such accusations which are the figment of imagination for this predominately brahminically ruled country.

* A treaty of military protection will be signed with Pakistan
and China tomorrow in the diplomatic quarter. This has been negotiated in private for some time now. Tri-service units from both countries are expected to be based in BD under a 100 yr lease agreement for bases. As you know China is a great and powerful country and Pakistan is the leading islamic power, both have helped us immensely in all spheres and we look forward to working closely with them.

* Shariat laws loosely modelled on the Pakistan laws shall be
enforced from today. Our failures have been because we were not true enough to the old tenets . we need discipline, we need a spartan devotion to the old ways of arabia, only then all problems shall be solved. A chief justice of pakistan supreme court shall be here shortly to help codify the new set of laws.

This then is what I have for today. I will update the nation
as events progress . the live telecast of the treaty signing
will be on TV tomorrow at 1:30PM .

We need your love, your support and your co-operation to reunify and take our nation forward into the glorious future.
Please unite and close ranks behind the BD armed forces - we are for you, with you, will always be with you.

Joi Bangladesh! "

****

The meetings in Delhi stretched out through the day. Those before the TV broadcast were tentative, seeking to gather more information....those after the TV broadcast were more heated, arguments flowed thick and fast around the table. The kitchen was kept busy serving up endless pots of tea and pakoras to the leaders gathered at the high table. (The COAS graciously declined the pakoras and drank only unmilked tea)

In summary the position taken by the ruling UPA Govt was to do nothing at the moment and instead wait and watch future developments. There *was* not much possible at the present moment short of an attack on BD which was not deemed feasible or useful in any fashion. India had no love for the departed PM who had baited India on every occasion. A message of condolence on her untimely demise was sent to the BD embassy. There was nobody to contact in Dhaka but the embassy which was in lockdown mode, no external contacts existed as army had surrounded the diplomatic enclave.

Another message was released to the Dhaka army HQ later that evening, CC: to the press that "India regrets the army takeover of the democratically elected govt and expects a swift and fair restoration of democracy under a UN supervised election".

It was roundly ignored in Dhaka. no response came.

Predictably the NDA advocated a more activist posture but cooled down when pointed out that there was no political leadership now in BD and lashing out achieved nothing.

More predictably, the Marxists through their media outlets accused the *Indian Govt* of bringing this about through not accomodating BD interests enough and not being supportive of the ex-PM. It warned of mass mobilization against the delhi govts repressive foreign policy and called for a 24 hr west bengal bandh the next day.

*****

The US president got the news during his daily briefing. He yawned, asked the Secy of state to send a message with the right rumbling noises to Dhaka saying the US was looking forward to co-operating with the new regime. the US always co-operated with third world strongmen.....easier to bribe, easier to control. "Let the uppity indians take care of the PLAN
in their backward , we can crush the china navy wherever they appear, we are ok, its their problem " he said not without a little suppressed glee. he remembered the lack of success in making India sign up to NPT and CTBT..he recalled the dour indian ext affairs minister who had bored him to death pontificating on India's right to deterrence right when he was about to leave for golfing trip at the greenbrier virginia and a spot of *** with his mistress. screw them, he thought maliciously.

The Europeans esp the scandanavians made some noises on democracy and then went back to their affairs. It was not their worry, they had nothing to lose by a regime change in a far away third-world swamp.

10 seconds of file footage on Dhaka came on CNN that night,
12 seconds on BBC world.

and hence ended the day, remarkable for its violence as also by the tacit acceptance of the new Order by the rest of the world.

Just a thought, not really a parallel scenraio but an excuse for changing border or justification of invasion if the story gets there.

For each illegal immigrant in India, punish Bangladesh by taking a precomputed piece of land to pay for that person's stay in India. Change borders to suit our needs. We will accept those illegal people but will accordingly take over their needs from bangladesh until they accept them back.

International Movable Immigrant Border.

They all will come to their senses. Warn everyone its coming. A year of warning will prepare all parties for any justification that we may need. Even present it in UN.

Either solve it .. or we are coming.. No more rounds of talks.

GD: You wanna wargame? How would you handle THIS?

The Awakening, Parallel 1

Dec 11 2007

Over the last 24 hours, alert Security forces in West Bengal have foiled three separate attempts to sabotage the broadgauge railway tracks passing through the New Jalpaiguri, Dhubari and Bongaigaon sectors by suspected militants belonging to unidentified groups. The suggestion of concerted attempts to disrupt communications through the strategically vulnerable Chicken Neck area have caused concern, especially in light of the recent breakdown in diplomatic relations with Bangladesh.

In a worrisome development, reports have been trickling in of heightened PLA activity directly north of the NJP sector, as well as in the Arunachal sector.

Dec 12 2007 1045 hours

Shock and horror ensues as militants, allegedly belonging to a breakaway faction of the NLFT invade and occupy the campus of Government Primary School in Agartala. They have sealed off all approaches to the school with landmines, and seized at least 400 hostages, many of them students at the school. Children of IAS and IPS officers posted in Agartala, besides those of many locals, are known to attend the school. Comparisons with 2004's Beslan siege by Chechen separatists in Russia are running riot in the national media, and the international media are already expressing more interest in this episode than in the coup d'etat by General Jaffar Ahmed in Bangladesh two days ago.

The militants have made no attempt to communicate with government authorities so far. Thuingaleng Muivah, ideological father of the NSCN(I-M), remarked to a journalist at his home outside Bangkok that perhaps the time had come for the oppressed people of Northeastern India to achieve sovereignty and independence by any necessary means, once and for all. However, there is at this time no indication of collaboration between the NSCN(I-M) with the group occupying the school, other than ideological sympathy.

The National Liberation Front of Tripura was established in 1989 as a militant group fighting for the secession of the state of Tripura from the Indian Union. A large section of the group signed a ceasefire with the GOI in 2004, but breakaway factions continued their activity. In recent months, slow, halting negotiations over a period of years had brought forth a tacit admission from Bangladesh that some NLFT activity perhaps had occurred from bases in the Khagrachari district of that country. In October 2007, breakaway NLFT leader Debabrata Rumnang was found dead with a bullet hole in his forehead in a hotel in Noakhali. Bangladesh Ministry of External Affairs spokesman Morshed Choudhry made allegations before the press at that time of RAW's involvement in Rumnang's assassination, describing Rumnang as a "freedom fighter in the mold of our own Mujib".

Owing to the complete breakdown in relations with Bangladesh, there is no hope now (if ever there was any) that pressure can be brought to bear on the NLFT militants via that route.

Ah! the crisis deepens...good work Rudradev

Story: The Awakening
Post: #2 "Teach them indians a lesson"

Dec15, 9:30 AM Dhaka

The city is under precautionary curfew after stray incidents of
violence the past few days. APCs are out on the main streets.
A big car escorted by a convoy of BD army jeeps leave the
Army GHQ compound and travel swiftly through the nearly empty
streets to a small annexe near the beautiful Louis Kahn
designed parliament building. Three other cars, all of them bearing Pakistan and China diplomatic number plates are already in the
parking lot , the drivers chatting among themselves under a tree.
The entire compound is secured and heavy security is evident.

One by one the five cars occupants' make their way inside to
a small conference room. Gen Jaffar takes the head of table
slot. Cordial greetings are exchanged with the chinese defence attache Colonel Li, a visitor from Beijing General Dao , the
pakistan defence attache Lt.Col aftab cheema, the ops head
of ISI bangladesh Colonel Sharif and BD army generals Chowdhury and Alam who have accompanied Gen Jaffar from GHQ.

Small talk is exchanged for a while, an orderly brings in hot tea , cakes and biscuits. These are men comfortable with each other...afterall they had been holding regular meetings for the last 18 months.

Gen Jaffar finally gets the meeting underway.

"Gentlemen, I thank you for the congratulations that have poured in from your respective Govts. we are grateful for your help and moral support. But there is much to do yet. We have
only walked the first 10 steps of Operation PoisonHilsa, much work very difficult work remains.

let me recount and reiterate our future steps and mutual commitment.

* The treaty we signed a few days back gives your Govts the right to station military forces on BD soil, subject to my oversight and permission. We expect that within 1 week from now you arrange for atleast the advance elements of two brigades, two fighter squadrons and a chinese naval unit to
reach BD soil. This we consider necessary to checkmate indian
saber rattling over the massacre in tripura.

* the murder or shall we put it "unfortunate death" of 400
people in tripura is but the first in series of things we expect
to happen shortly. You shall see when it happens. we shall
bring these indians to their knees. but you must ensure to keep
your part and arrange for the troop deployments as I just
talked about.

* all three of our govts must be united now in the face of
indian and international pressure. we will arrange for endless
chaos in the border districts of assam, meghalaya and tripura
through fresh batches of ISI trained agents and our own people firmly settled in the region.

* on the surface we must profess peace, while we cut them
mercilessly from under the water.

* the Delhi leadership as you well know is divided and unable
to evovle strong measures . They will continue to flail around
with no effect. we are already using our friends in the indian
media and our contacts within certain political parties to blame
the indian govt for our takeover and occupy the moral high ground. our supporters in the british media are doing a good job in tripura putting the blame for the agartala massacre on mistakes and gung-ho approach of local police and the NSG.

We shall hold the next meeting when your military units start
to arrive, my generals need to work where to base them and
the logistics of supplying them food, fuel and other materials.
Please ensure you select good formations at high levels of
training for this deployment.

Ins'allah we shall be ready to start tearing up the indian northeast within a few months. boka***** indians will soil their dhotis before we are through with them!

(as a afterthought) umm kindly ensure the funds get transferred into our sovereign account and to the cayman accounts of the list I gave you last month. (smiles)

Good luck. may God be with you all."

The meeting disperses at 11 AM. within one hour the place is deserted, swept clean and locked up. encrypted diplomatic
cables go out soon to beijing and islamabad by hand messenger to prevent american & indian snooping equipment picking anything up. The Air Lanka and China air flights leave that night with diplomatic pouches and messengers. By the next day,
the plans are in motion.

Dec 19, 2:00PM Chittagong airport

A indian spy located in a rented house near the airport has
been ordered to keep an eye on comings and goings . Throughout the day, he sits on the roof and pretends to read a book, briefly using binocular to observe the aircraft flying in and out.

Between 2:00PM and 8:00PM he notes 20 flights by Chinese
heavy transport a/c IL76 and Y8 coming in via a airlane over
Myanmar. The next day another 35 flights arrive.

Spy mounts his cycle and stations himself at a restaurant on the highway leading from the airport. He counts many hundred BD army trucks carrying personnel away from the airport. Their fair complexion and dress suggest PLA troops. Many truckloads of material are also observed.

The port also witnessess the arrival of 10 chinese merchant ships over the next week carrying supplies for the airlifted RRF brigade. The usual assortment of wheeled IFV, scout cars, radar trailers, SAM units, towed guns, ammunition. Spy bribes a dockyard employee to get some fake id as a dock worker and
observes the type of eqpt.

Dutiful reports in coded language are sent via a internet cafe to a
yahoo account which a RAW operative checks and decodes
daily in delhi.

Dec 31

The 1st brigade deployment is complete and 2nd brigade starts
to arrive.

In orbit 100s of km above , the indian IRS and TES satellites keenly observe the buildup. when within LOS from india, they burst download 100s of MBs of imagery to ISRO centers which are then post processed by a RAW ARC and
find their way up the command chain. Under orders from the
PMO not to aggravate matters, the indian armed forces refrain
from any overt buildup and recon activities.

From Dec31 onward in parallel, two Pakistan brigades start
arriving in BD and deploy to the north , near assam and west
of Dhaka. They come by comandeered PIA flights, by ship and
my C-130/IL76 routed through Tibet. Being informed of the
New Order beforehand they have been ready and well organized for six months now.

two squadrons of Mirage-III ROSE jets , supported by another
squadron of F-16A fighters fly via urumqi and lhasa to
kunming province, then fly the home leg over myanmar to
deploy into BD. for the moment they gather together in Dhaka
and perform familiarization sorties to know the terrain and weather conditions. A met unit from PAF Sargodha flies in a
C-130 via tibet with portable radar and establishes itself.
Extra sorties by PLAAF IL76 and Y8 bring in the support personnel and spares to complete the PAF force. By Jan5, the process is complete.

Two SU27 squandrons together with support personnel
and supplies fly in between Jan1-Jan7. They fly direct from
southern china with full internal fuel using their huge 4500km
ferry range. Missiles arrive shortly via IL76. BAF organizes the
ground support and fuel to settle the new guests comfortably into their new lair. From Jan8 the SU27s too begin familiarization patrols in the north of BD, accompanied by a Y8 ELINT a/c to pick up indian radar emissions if any and build up electronic ORBAT for the region. It tags and quickly identifies the IAF radar located in Upper Shillong.

Total foreign legion orbat on Jan5:

2 x reinforced independent semi-mech brigade PA
2 x reinforced indep Mech brigade PLA
3 x PAF sqdns (2 MirageIII, 1 F16) PAF (Dhaka-Tejgaon)
2 x SU27 squandrons PLAAF (Dhaka-kurmitola)

While speculation has led to the consensus that the militants occupying the school are most probably from an NLFT faction, there is absolutely no firsthand evidence to confirm this.

The Agartala Grand Sentinel reports that the town drunk Debroy Moong saw several strangers racing through town the previous night in a Tata Sumo. According to his account, the strangers were tall, fair and had extraordinarily well developed glutei maximi.

Rudradev, you need to massacre 400 people by the NLFT by morning of Dec15. just work that out whichever way you see fit. I would prefer a botched NSG op micromanaged to death from delhi.

Nrao, what respect ? we are as stupid and fallible as anyone else. survival and victory is often by making less *mistakes* than the enemy not by some supersmart Sun Tzu judo move.

Humint assets are a must anywhere and what I described is a legitimate and relatively safe and effective tactic of gathering info.

A squad of 9 para camping the bushes with satcom eqpt would be more sexy but sadly theres seldom a chance for such bookish heroics in the real world.

the intent of a successful spy is to blend in and be a low key figure not attract attention. hence a poor sod renting a hell hole of a rented home in some slum, moving around by cycle is the BEST way of doing it in BD and TSP.

Got it, got it.

ND is only used to micro manage. Humit on cycle is the best option.

Any chance of an Indian Jihadi hijacking a PAF C-130 with General Arshaf Fivestar and a mistress + a few bottles of booze, somewhere along the way?

Will await 3rd chapter.

Cannot wait for a Bison vs. Su-27MKK chapter. You know a few BVR missiles, Brahmos, agni and an Arrow intercept of a few Hafts. You have to let ND live to micro manage the next gen.

here is an example of fact flowing parallel to fiction:

northeasttribune.com:

31 killed, 107 injured in NE blasts, another bomb recovered

NET News Network

Dimapur/ Kohima, Oct 2: Mangled bodies scattered at the twin site of blast have been made it extremely difficult for the rescue workers to find out the exact numbers of victims in Saturday’s three simultaneous blasts in Dimapur which claimed more than 30 lives till the filing of this report.

“ Such was the impact of the blast that the limbs and body parts of the victims were seen flying from platform 1 to 4,” said an eyewitness. Police sources informed that the impact of the blast was so severe that the entire portion of the ticket counter and platform in Dimapur railway station was damaged beyond recognisation. People with mutilated limbs were seen running helter and shelter shouting for help.

The wall clock in the room of the stationmaster hangs ominously with clock struck at 9:29 reminding about the exact time of the blast.

Meanwhile, fear psychosis prevails in the business capital of Nagaland after the recovery of another bomb from Super Market area.

With more then 35 injured persons in very critical condition, the death toll might go very high. The blasts left more than 100 injured and 30 deaths.

Morning lull on the Gandhi Jayanti Day was shattered by four blasts killing 31 and injuring more than 57 persons in Northeast India this morning.

Militants triggered off simultaneous blasts in Dimapur railway station and Hong Kong market in Nagaland at 9:30 am killing 30 people and injuring 100 others. Police sources informed that two simultaneous blasts ripped apart Hong Kong market.15 were killed in Railway station, 10 in Hong Kong market and 5 others succumbed to their injuries in Dimapur Civil hospital.

The bomb was reportedly planted in the station manager's room. Security experts informed that the militants used RDX in both the blasts.

Shell shocked Dimapur went on a spontaneous bandh after the blasts.

Meanwhile, state Chief Minister N.Rio and DGP have rushed to the spot.

All trains originating from Dimapur railway station to Upper Assam have been suspended till further orders.

Injured have been admitted to Dimapur Civil Hospital and various Nursing homes.

Senior police officials and district administration of Dimapur who are clueless about the blast have launched a massive manhunt.

Meanwhile, one person was killed and more than others were injured in a grenade blast in Assam’s Chirang district this morning.

Pradip Pujari, SP, Chirang district while speaking to northeasttribune.com informed that the blast took place at busy Santipur weekly market under Runikhata border outpost in Basugaon police station in the Indo-Bhutan border at around 9:10am. The spot is 70km away from Kokrajhar and situated near Galanpu in Bhutan.

Senior district and police officials have rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.

Meanwhile, according to a report received just now, Gorola Basumatary, a senior NDFB leader was killed during an encounter with army somewhere in Nagaland this morning. More reports are awaited.

Story: The Awakening
Post: #3 "Tears Tears Tears"
(100% work of fiction)

Jan 10, 2008
9:30AM Guwahati

A gentle but dense fog had enveloped the city of 1 million inhabitants. The morning
rush hour was in progress. The arterial MG Road that ran along the brahmaputra river
was packed with thousands of people going to work , hundreds of buses big and small
ferried people up and down the long but narrow city.

At panbazar, the MG Road was bordered by a huge SBI building , followed by the district
court complex housing a score of Govt offices, followed by the DC bungalow (a graceful
old british era structure on a huge plot), the circuit house. A busy bus stop was in
front of these and people milled around in the confusing but balletic grace common in
indian streets. Opposite this complex was the 10 storey guwahati GPO building, the
biggest in the region. Students of Cotton college whose campus started right after
the GPO building moved in droves going from class to class.

Guwahati was not noted for any traffic discipline or parking and today was no exception.
A unruly line of two wheelers, cars, trucks and empty buses were parked on the
roadsides wherever a inch of purchase could be obtained.

9:32 AM

A 10-ton Tata truck parked next to the SBI building
disintegrated into a cloud of explosives and metal fragments. travelling up and sideways
at nearly supersonic speed, the blast guts the SBI building and ten crowded
buses moving slowly on the MG road in front. the front
half of the SBI building suffers structural failure
leading to a full collapse a few hours later.

fifteen seconds later, a mini truck parked 150 meters north
infront of the court complex erupts in similar fashion...
follwed almost immediately by another explosion infront of
the GPO complex - this one felled dozens of cotton college
students.

9:50 AM

CM Pujari was holding a meeting with his revenue dept
officials in Dispur when a aide came in announcing a urgent
call from the police central control room which happened
to be located 2 km south of the blast sites.

Briefly, orders were given to muster whatever police forces
were in the city to reach their patrol areas and maintain
law and order. Since it was expected car bombs had been used by talking to dazed
eyewitnesses police were also instructed to look cautiously at parked abandoned looking
vehicles. anything out the ordinary was to be investigated.

The second issue was rescue and medical aid in the affected
area. the city had never been geared for this level of carnage. there were more than
enough doctors and hospitals but essential things like blood would face a surge demand
and be in short supply. neither were there proper ambulances in adequate quantity.
the third thing was not to tamper with the evidence at the blast site.

Quick phone calls went out to the nearby BSF and CRPF camps (Narengi, Chandrapur)
to mobilize additional manpower and keep them ready. The
Cmdr of the "Red Horn" division located 20 km away across
the brahmaputra at Changsari(motor pool) and 40km at Rangiya(the bulkd of its manpower) was given a similar request.
He agreed to put together two batallions on a urgent basis
and truck them into the city.

Another call was made to the HMO in delhi and luckily the
HM himself was in town that day (he had a fondness for
long semi-working holidays in the uttaranchal hills). An
agreement was reached to gather extra supplies of blood and
other medical eqpt expected to be in short supply and fly
them on IAF a/c from Kolkata and Delhi that same evening.
Meantime assam govt jeeps would scour the small towns in
the vicinity of guwahati to gather all the govt and willing
pvt doctors they could for forthcoming duties.

A bomb disposal squad , CBI forensic squad and their eqpt
would fly from Delhi in the evening on a IAF ac.

10:30 AM Dispur capital complex

CM Pujari decides to visit the spot with some ministerial
colleagues to gain a first hand assessment. sirens blaring
the convoy leaves the dispur capital complex and takes
a right turn onto the GS Road for the 15 km ride to blast
spot. calls continue to come on the CM's cellphone from the police ACP Barua who has reached the site. Initial estimates
of dead are 400+, injured at 1000+. People are reported to
have comandeered private vehicles and started rushing the
wounded to city hospitals. the MM Choudhury distt hospital
located 1 km away is already swamped and unable to cope.

10:35 AM

The convoy is now 5 km away from the capital complex having
passed a flyover and speeding at 80kmph. advance vehicles
and police wireless alert the traffic police as usual to
keep the road clear.

10:36 AM

Maruf ahmed cradling a cellphone sits comfortable atop a locked
flour mill building about 100 mts from the GS Road looking
down at a clear view of the oncoming traffic upto 1.5 km
away. He has already got a call from the spotter about the
departure of the CM's convoy. He is ready and waiting - he
had known this would work, indian leaders always rushed to
the scene for fear of anyone else grabbing political points.

The site has been chosen with care, the GS road is wide
with a concrete median. There is an ample shoulder to
park even large trucks and the road is fronted by large
high quality shops and office buildings. trucks are commonly parked to load and unload supplies as are cars.

The CMs convoy appears from the morning haze. He estimates
the speed accurately (part of the course at SSG school),
and reaches down to a little black box with a extended
radio antenna and a red button covered by a clear plastic
flip cover. the cover is opened and the button pressed at
the right time.

The convoy ceases to exist a few miliseconds later. the
Czech plastic explosives work superbly as usual.

Maruf ducked behind the wall to escape the shock wave, then
looks down with some satisfaction at his handiwork spread
untidily below.

Scrolling through his cellphone outgoing call menu he
dials a number in dhubri town near the BD border. "the
bags of rice have been delivered".

Walking comfortably down the stairs of the derelict building he mounts a scooter
and makes off in the direction of fatasil ambari, a township composed mainly of BD
immigrants south of the city.

but before leaving, he pauses briefly to spit on the cold
dead body of the aged ex-serviceman chowkidar he had
murdered the previous night to gain entry. It hadnt been
much of a fight really, the old man was in his sixties and
clearly kept as a token presence since there wasnt anything
in the building worth stealing. He had however enjoyed
strangling someone after such a long time. Memories of his
kashmir tour as a lashkar team leader in 1998 had come
flooding back. such opportunities seldom came by these
days of indo-pak 'entente'. He liked it better than sex with
his young 14 yr old boy lover in bahawalpur.

"f***ing indian" he snarled with some distaste.

*********

10:15 AM

Naik Krishna Gurung of the "Red Horns" division was part
of the platoon strong security detail assigned to guard
both ends of the vital Brahmaputra road and rail bridge
west of guwahati. Being one of the lifelines of the north
east it had over the years attracted a lot of attention by
insurgents to demolish it, but the security details had
somehow always managed to foil these attempts. the worst
that had happened to this graceful old structure built by
the british firm Burns & Jessop had been collisions between
CVs on the narrow two-lane roadway leading to some modest
damage, quickly repaired by the PWD.

Today was a different kind of day.

The bridge was a dual deck structure, the upper deck having
a two lane roadway , with catwalks along the sides clamped
to the bridge members for people to walk. Due to the long
distance nobody but the army detail ever really used the
catwalks. The lower deck housed a BG line and within it a
MG line. The lines split again once they got off the bridge
at both ends. There were no catwalks on lower deck just
periodic balconys for railway workmen to gather in when a
train passed. public throughfare was not permitted on the
lower deck.

Gurung was walking the catwalk at the south end of bridge
with his section of 14 troopers. Behind him he heard the
vague rumbling of approaching train. looking back he saw
a goods train chugging slowly up the huge earthen berm from the kamakhya station. He continued walking, pausing briefly
sometimes to look carefully at the twin-pillars below for signs of any explosives. the river 15 meters below was at low ebb. the dense fog reduced visibility to 200 meters.

The unit hadnt yet received news of events in the city. even
if they had, there wasnt anything different to do.

10:17AM

Gurung again paused briefly to lean over the railing and visually inspect the
next set of pillars. another squad walking parallel on the other side did
the same. He spotted a couple of grey country made fishing boats about 100 mts
upstream of the bridge. Nothing unusual, there were hundreds of fishermen 'Doms'
who had a lease of this stretch of the river and usually cast their nets at night,
coming to shore in the morning to offload the catch at Uzanbazar ghat - a place
where the fish eating elite' of the city visited early in the morning to get the
best and freshest fish.

10:18AM

The good trains hauling 45 wagons packed with wood, tea, fruits, minerals and a few oil
wagons finally crested the top of its climb and entered the bridge proper.
It proceeded slowly at 20 kmph as per the safety norms for this aeging bridge, the driver
keeping an eye ahead for stray cattle that sometimes wandered in.

10:19AM

SSG major Tariq had lain patiently inside the curved bamboo roof shelter of the fishing boat
since the early hours of the morning. Now his time had come. His spotter at the
kamakhya yard at SMS'ed him when the right train arrived from the New guwahati
goods yard and he had long since chosen the right spot.

He took out a little box from the folds of his lungi same as the one used by
maruf in the city and pressed the red button.

The shaped charge explosives had been carefully packed into two of the wagons
by infiltrating the loosely policed and vast railway yard. designed originally as
anti tank mines, they were emplaced to direct their force only below the floor of
the wagon and angled to the sides. The explosion was not spectacular (only oil fires
are!) but it was effective. As predicted by the PA engineers from scout photos, the
bridge was very strong in ability to take vertical weights not so in a angled attack.
the deck below the wagons collapsed, the joins holding the deck to the exterior
skeleton were severed at three pillars and as if in slow motion, a 40 meter stretch
of the bridge comprising two pillar sections fell in a untidy heap into the deep
waters below.

The force of the explosion killed most of the patrol immediately, the rest were
badly wounded by shrapnel and thrown by a giant fist into the water where they all
drowned, stunned, bleeding and unprepared for swimming in the cold water. Krishna Gurung's last conscious thoughts
were of his wife and unborn child, yet in the womb.

The two country boats disappeared slowly into the mist downriver. Two days later both Tariq and Ahmed met in Dhubri
and crossed the riverine border easily into BD slipping past
the woefully few BSF patrols.

9:30AM

Similar explosions as in guwahati rip through the crowded
Police bazar area of Shillong. Due to the extreme density of
the area, the carnage there is even more than in guwahati.

Mission accomplished, the SSG-ISI cell there evacuates via
the jaintia hills into the BD border below.

I figured this was the only way I could serve up something remotely useful/entertaining to the BR. the distilled 'wisdom' of 1000s of hours of BR prowling.

folks like victor and baruah will recognize some of the guwahati
details. they are accurate.

If this is the result of 1000s of hours of prowling on BR, then hats off to you! More strength to BR and to strategists like you.

Is Myanmar part of the anti-India grouping? And if so why not overtly...or does India have some sort of hold on the Burmese Generals?

I decided to leave out Myanmar from the scenario. I mean the situation is bad enough as it is  Their only role for now is to watch helplessly as chinese and pak planes overfly them. They have no AF worth the name.

In real life, one reads that Myanmar generals are split into two factions now - one of which is heavily pro china and the other faction wants decent relations with both not be a puppet of china.

IMO, the Burmese hostility would be limited to naval bases for PLAN, air and land routes for PLA, PLAF forces and the PAffffffff (the only way they can get to BD if their flight path is through China is via Burma)......at least in the initial stages. Of course, the support option would be "upgraded" when India strikes enemy targets on Burmese soil.

Can I play Devil's Advocate pleasssseee.....
GD, a JDAM very early in the scenario might make things harder for us right? Rather than having these goat jockeys making a couple of terrorist strikes on chicken neck, why not do a JDAM there? If the BDs, Pakis and chicomms have this death wish, won't they go the whole hog? But of course, nuke material can be traced and the nation be immediately made accountable.... But still...
How about a teaser/trailer for things to come......i..is Unkil/Ivan/Fosters making guest appearances? :)

JDAM makes the indian decision too easy - india would have to strike regardless of the array against them. the paktrick is to be a PITA but keep below a certain threshold such that indian leaders face no public pressure(people are apathetic) to respond, and have to weigh the long term vs short term costs of a response.

so you can be sure there will be plenty of heated discussions in delhi before Tigers, Battleaxes and the new Dhole M2K units get their movement orders

Story: The Awakening
Post: #4 "Arise Kumbhakarna!"
(100% work of fiction)

Jan12 2008

** Confidential message from Assam HM Dwarah to Home
Ministry Delhi **

Dear Home Minister,

The situation as it stands today in Assam and peripheral
states can be summed by as below:

* 451 fatalities in guwahati, 612 in shillong , approx 2500
injured. With central help we have managed to tide over the
immediate medical situation. CBI forensics has gathered
evidence and left for Delhi. delhi bomb disposal unit shall
remain in guwahati until further notice.

* Funeral of late CM Pujari and ministers Haque and Das was
held today. we have declared a week of state mourning.

* The Saraighat bridge is down. Initial estimates by army
and PWD engineers indicate 2 months to repair the roadway
and 3 months to get the railway back. The economy is
facing immense hardship and prices have already risen. In
my capacity as active CM, have instructed officials to
inspect shops at random and fine traders on the spot for
price gouging. However this in only a token step and price
gouging cannot be truly checked until the bridge is restored.

* road traffic is being rerouted via the jogighopa and
koliabhomora bridges. the road network from the first
towards guwahati on the south bank is however shaky and
cannot carry the same load as the severed NH37.

* BG rail traffic is coming via jogiphopa. MG traffic is
now terminated at Rangiya.

* Additional units of CRPF deployed to guard both bridges
on a continuous basis. movement of boat traffic banned
in the vicinity and CRPF on assault boats have
have deployed to enforce that. Shoot orders have been
issued on all violators.

* airports are functioning as normal under heavy CISF security.

* On June11, a caller claiming to be Ulfa supremo Paresh
Barua called up the office of the local daily "The Daily
Tribune" and claimed responsibility for the blasts. He
noted they were against the "hated symbols" of the
"colonial indian rule" viz the bridge through which he
accused the center of "looting" assam's resources, the
state govt complex in panbazar and the "consul of delhi"
the late CM himself.
He called upon all peoples of the north-east to rise once
and for all and throw off the "colonial yoke".

* Amnesty international and Human rights watch have accused
the assam govt and police of atrocities that lead to
these unfortunate attacks. BBC stringer in the region has
also lent his support to this unfair viewpoint.

* a UK based human rights org has sought to admit a notice
before the UN to urgently discuss the NE situation and
called for international community to intervene and
impose a "just settlement to the vexing sub-national
question"

* NLFT, NSCN and their coalition of terrorist orgs have
made statements in the media supporting the latest
upsurge and vowed to step up their attacks. As you
already know there is the crisis involved 400 hostages
in agartala and attacks on Govt facilities everywhere.
A rocket attack on the guwahati refinery was foiled last
night by alert police patrol. we have managed to keep it
out of the media for now.

* The people are angry and demoralized. They want to lash
out but have no idea against whom. Ulfa presents no
identifiable target. They are among us in disguise, they
dress like us, talk our language and move with us.

** recommendations & actions from the NE CMs **

after teleconferences with CMs of meghalaya, tripura,
mizoram, manipur and nagaland we jointly have the
following request for HMO to implement.

* sending additional central forces to try and guard
every potential target is not going to be a viable
solution. there are too many targets, too many ingress
routes and too many well paid / motivated sympathizers.
The enemy can keep this up by continuing to find our
vulnerable spots.

* the problem has to be tackled at the source and some
means found to either capture the terrorists in BD
or close their camps down and flush them into India
where we shall hunt them as we did in Bhutan in 2004.

* we are looking to Delhi for a suitable response to the
HR orgs and international interventionists.

* the economy of the region, already weak has become
weaker with these blows. no immediate recovery can be
forseen, whatever little interest in investment was
there have gone cold now. this is intolerable from our
pov because poverty will create more terrorist recruits.

* our state police and IB have found evidence beyond
doubt of ISI involvement in training and logistical
support to terrorist groups. Use of sympathetic elements
among the ex-BD people settled on the 'chars'(sandbars)
is routine, however due to the sensitive communal nature
of the issue we had not taken any action on that front.

* I have now ordered assam police and IB to jointly
launch a widespread cordon and search of the border
madrasas to identify suspect elements. Those whose
identity cannot be proven or pointed out as suspect by our
humint resources will be detained. however we shall not be
able to gather evidence that will stand up in court, so
at best this will only dislocate the network for a
month until their lawyers and the court steps in.

* the solution to NE terrorism now lies not in the NE but
in Bangladesh. Delhi has to somehow resolve this problem
it is beyond our power to do it. We stand ready to
extend all support whatever be the plan. For us NE CM's
it is a question of political survival now, the people
shall not tolerate such a widespread state failure on
the security and economic fronts. Prospects for our
Party in the next election would appear quite dim. A
separate note on this has been dispatched to High
Command via my personal emissary Mr Deuba who will meet
Madam tomorrow.

* in our assessment we are soon going to have a Kashmir
circa late 1990s situation if something is not done to stem
the tide. the danger signs are clear in terrorists dominating
large swathes of the countryside, running their own govt
systems, extorting at will, spreading the maoist poison among
gullible village youth, decimating the govt infrastructure
and intimidating govt employees.

* we earnestly urge the CCS to discuss threadbare these
issues , evolve a plan and take us into confidence at
the earliest.

Jai Hind!
yours sincerely
Anil Kumar Dwarah

So far an extremely thrilling and raptourous story. :)

I would love to see a little more GOI bashing ...more specifically the inability of a coalation government at the centre to come to decisions quickly .

How about the PRC and IRP getting ready to open a new front in this senstive NE area while our GOI vacillates in endless " all-party meets " ? :P

Also how about the crisis worsening in the NE with a large scale push by PRC and IRP soldiers dressed in BD military fatigues , to take control of the bordering states liek Arunachal , Manipur, Tripura etc and the inability of our armed forces to respond immediately owing to a poor starting position and insiffucient ORBAT here ?

another idea - how about a humint report from the PRC hinting at the possible ingress points in the far NE by the PRC ,IRP and BD forces . :!:

I am sure we have valuable humint assets in PRC and IRP and indeed BD which will give us enough warning beforehand regarding such events ?

Waht do ya think MT Singha ? :)

interesting choices. But I think the evil troika would much prefer
to hide behind a strong conventional deterrence while indulging in rampant terrorism same as Pak does in the west. Open war with inferior forces they have in theater is not generally part of the sino-islamist gameplan. i.e. create another kashmir in the
east and let it boil for a decade. the real kashmir is assumed
to be made dormant under US pressure and indian fencing by 2007. atleast thats what I will assume for future chapters.

secondly, the UPA can depend on strong NDA support in case of national need and completely sideline the marxists if need be. NDA will extract its pound of flesh on other matters, but can be expected not to fail the nation in the hour of need. the UPA knows this and so do the marxists, so they will bark but wont like to get their lack of leverage brutally exposed. we have already seen a good example in the firing of all the left economists recently.

The next chapter will be a CCS meeting to evolve the broad objectives and options, followed in subsequent chapter(s) by the inevitable operational planning and deployment for such.

The real dishum-dishum stuff is atleast 3 more posts away ,
so the front bench "sunny deol fan" types(I am a big fan of his) can take a restroom break if they want and not miss any gore

Fact seems to be following fiction too closely.

Just heard the Assam CM on Zee News say that the terrorist camps in B'desh and Myanmar need to be wiped out for NE safety and security. The news also mentioned that a big army drive seems to be on the anvil. The reported also mentioned something about all the NE states being in touch with each other.

On a side note, the blasts could be a blessing in disguise since they have put the NE into the spotlight and may force the govt. to get serious about the terrorist camps in B'desh and Myanmar and the B'desh refugee problem.

good heavens everyone seems to be on the rampage! northeasttribune.com. the icons below are not my doing, it
was actually a 8 followed by a closed bracket.

HISTORIC SARAIGHAT BRIDGE IN HIT LIST?
20 killed,16 injured in Assam

NET News Network

Kokrajhar/Guwahati, Oct 2: Security in and around historic Saraighat bridge over river Brahmaputra in Guwahati has been beefed up in view of an intercepted message received by state security agencies apprehending terrorist attack.

While contacted, city superintendent of police, H K Nath told northeasttribune.com that two platoon of security forces have been posted in the bridge to avert any subversive activities. "

In view of the ongoing disturbances in different parts of the state red alert has been sounded in many important places in the city," informed Nath.

Meanwhile, suspected NDFB militants have killed 16 persons including two women and injured another ten in Makrijhara area under Bogribari police station in Assam’s Dhubri district at around 4:45 this evening.

According to a reliable source, militants numbering three came from forest gate side and retorted to indiscriminate firing on an evening crowd in a busy market place situated near NH 31 killing 11 on the spot while one succumbed to injuries in the hospital.Four of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.

" Militants brought their arms hidden in Gamochas ( Assamese towels). They went back the same way after creating the crime," informed an eyewitness.

The victims have been identified Khadam Ali (22), Bariz Seikh (45), Asraf Ali (32), Hyed Ali Seikh (25), Abdul Barekh, Javed Ali, Khadeem Ali, Anwar Hussain, Sarifa Begum, Nurjahan Bibi and Abdul .

Six of the injured have been identified Farid Ali (18), Dulal Barman (35), Mazahar Ali (38), Samsul Ali (22), Chanu Mia (62) and Badsa.

The group reportedly killed another four persons in the nearby jungles on their way back.

In another incident, militants fired at a truck ( WB-25A-6979)in Monipur under Bogribari police station injuring the driver, Lakshman Singh.

In the meantime, reports poured in about a blast at Tuniapara in New Bogaigaon at around 6:10pm this evening. Two persons reportedly died in the attack while two others sustained injuries. Militants also lobbed grenade at a shop R.K.Traders in Abhayapuri killing two on the spot at around 6:45 pm. Militants lobbed grenade at Bongaigaon refinery too but failed to cause any damage.

In another incident, motorcycle borne militants lobbed grenade at Baihata police station injuring three policemen this evening.

Meanwhile as the BTC deputy chief heads for the Bhutanese kingdom for a dialogue with Bhutanese officials on the reopening of the international gates in Gelenphu bordering Indian bazaar of Dadgiri a day ahead of the 18th raising day of NDFB, the suspected militants of National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) welcomed him by lobbying two Chinese grenades at Santipur weekly market under Runikhata Border Out Post in Chirang district on Saturday morning, killing one on the spot and injuring 14 others including a CRPF jawan and six year old child.

Royal Govt of Bhutan closed the International Gates since the bomb blast at Bhutanese town of Gelengphu on September last, which left 3 dead.

The dead has been identified as Mir Hussain Sheikh a mender of old umbrellas hailing from Shitalshasti of Bangaigaon district. Two of the critically injured have been shifted to Guwahati GMC while the others are being treated at BRPL hospital at Dhaligaon.

The injured have been identified as Bali Mushahary, Indra Bahadur, Fore Narzary, Mongol Narzary, Dwimalu Mushahary, Syamal Barman, Mogor Narzary, Puspa Roy, Lachit Roy, Samar Narzary, Babuda Daimary, Mrs. Sorala Narzary, Ramal Narzary, Gopinath Mushahary, and Bandhan Shah, constable of 29th Bn CRPF.

According to a source, the CRPF jawans on duty must have been the targets of the attack. The police had recovered one live Chinese grenade from the site, which was later defused by the Assam Police.

The BTC Deputy Chief Chandan Brahma along with other EMs and local MP S.K. Bwiswmuthiary and MLA Matindra Basumatary visited the incident site and appealed to the people to help the administration in maintaining law and order. BTAD areas IGP R.M. Singh, DC Chirang have also visited the spot to take stock of the situation.

According to eyewitness, the blast occurred exactly at 9:10 AM in the morning. The Chirang SP Pradip Pujari told northeasttribune.com, “ NDFB is behind the crime, who fled from the scene taking advantage of the prevailing confusion in the area”.

Addressing a public gathering at Dadgiri near the international gate, the BTC dy. Chief said, ‘This condemnable crime has been committed by NDFB which has spent the amount of money collected from the people in killing the people they claim they are fighting for”. He sought peoples’ active cooperation in nabbing the culprits.

In another incident, one NDFB militant was killed by security forces at Nepalpara under Sefanguri PS in Kokrajhar district on Friday night at around 10 p.m.
Acting on tip-off, the security forces along with special police officers laid an ambush in the area resulting in an encounter, which led to the killing of one hardcore NDFB militant. The slain NDFB militant has been identified as Bathan Mushahary@ B. Garla. Two other accomplices managed to escape under the cover of darkness. The police recovered one pistol and two grenades.

Very Interesting MT Singha

Post by member_5303 »

MT Singha, the BD story is getting really interesting. But as I was reading it, I thought of a future possibility of {Reference Gen. (Retd.) Padmanabhan that India and US could go to war around 2015} US asking India to hand over entire Kashmir to Pakistan or else....and Russia warning US to keep off or else...what do you think of it.
What a mess it would create? Comments welcome.

My god MT, Rudradev you guys are awesome but I seriuosly think you must refrain from giving ideas to wrong people  . Man the bridge explosion and the explosive implementation was too realistic and next time you know some bodo militants trying that out to make sure that works or not

Keep this going I m lapping it up and would print the whole story when it ends it would surely make up a good read, much better that the literature available in the market.

I see we are in for a grand treat! You know how to sell a story, GD.

I must say, the situation sounds (deliciously) grim right now. I would think we would start massing very soon. I would hope so with a mechanized chini rapid reaction force and PLAAF Flankers in Beedeeland!

Don't let our opinions and responses overly influence you, we want you to write the thriller so we could be suprised and entertained by the unpredictable fortunes of war :D

GD - story's getting very interesting. Can't wait for the next installment. Maybe start with newsrpts appearing in Indian mainstream media of reports coming in that dredging operations by Chinese engineers are starting to take place in Chittagong harbor to bring in the heavy stuff.....or B'Deshi generals signing 'economic pacts' with Chinese to 'develop' their natural gas resources. Also, 'training exercises' with PLAAF and PAF and BAF ostensibly to evaluate skills but training takes place too close to IB and too close to Calcutta over Bay of Bengal. GOI still taking wait and watch attitude...but calling in Paki and Chinese diplomats to tell them that increased troop presence is causing 'tensions to buildup in area'. Indian diplomats quitely tell their counterparts that India may use force if necessary. Newsreports in Indian media soon report of Indian naval buildup in Eastern Naval Command. India announces launch of largest naval exercise in Indian Ocean not far from the Straits - clearly giving the signal that Chinese shipping could be stopped but good - isolating Chinese forces already in BD. USA alarmed sends over Sec State who travels to India, BD, Pak and China. Tells BD and Pak that US Cent Com has wargamed scenario and BD will surely lose much territory. Cautions China to act cautiously. However, tensions increase with increasingly daring terrorist acts. However, terrs getting sloppy and intercepted calls clearly reveal high level coordination by BD top brass. India announces and air, sea and land blockade of BD................
As Tim Hoyt (where has he been) says - just my thoughts
