Thats not much price. It sounds more like a heli tax than a ferry service for the rich. Maybe the reporter was reading his copy of the red book.

Air hostesses suffer heavy defeat in India

[quote]
Rhys Blakely in Bombay

Air hostesses can be told that they are too fat to fly, the High Court in India has ruled.

Judges in Delhi threw out a case brought by five female employees of Air India who had been grounded by the state-owned carrier for breaching its weight limits.

The court deemed that flabby air crew made for bad business and - in a semantic clarification that may raise some eyebrows - that an employee's physique may be deemed an integral part of their personality.

“In the highly competitive industry of civil aviation, the company has to focus on the personality of its employees,â€

An 18-year-old woman with a height of 152cm (5ft), for instance, is allowed to be a maximum of 50kg (7st 10lb).

thats a fairly low limit. my wife at 5'4" was fairly skeletal at 48kg just after
college.

I think the chicken fry, whisky & soda crowd heading off in various directions
like their servers a bit more rounded.

Perhaps we should get Army to relax strict exercise regimen and get all jawans to develop pot bellies as well as it does not take much to lift an AK47 and fire it..

In case of Indian policemen obseity and pot bellies indicate state of mind as well as state of affairs - absense of physical activity other than moving hand to mouth to eat and to the pocket to deposit mamool and see the job as one protecting thieves and criminals from public and not other way around..

Landed at BIAL yesterday night.

No public phone (after i cleared out of the immigration, maybe there are some inside ) that sucked a bit.
The buses are good but even with relatively empty roads ( 2230 hrs ) took me good 2+ hrs to reach bommanahalli

the airport also looks good but after i got out of the aircraft I felt i had to go up and down on escalators about 2-3 times.

Anything that does not facilitate the open ended loot and plunder of visitors and passengers by BIAL have either not been provided for or removed. Be it chairs for visitors or cheaper drinks/meals options, internet terminals, auto rickshaw facility, private taxis other than those sharing loot with BIAL (by the way will this looting technique work in any other civilised country's airport, including where these guys come from?) etc. etc., and of course public phones because I presume the telecom operators do not share revenue with BIAL.

A massive public action and declaration of war against BIAL looters is called for. We should not allow them the same slack that we cut for AAI parasites because these guys are supposed to be vastly superior. Unless and until basic amenities are provided GOI should crack the whip and fine them heavily. They should not get away with anything they will not get away with in their home airports, be it Zurich or Munich or Kuala Lumpur.

Next they will say no one should breathe the air in the airport and buy oxygen tanks from them for Rs.100 a minute

Talking of escalators BIAL is not unique. Not all airports are as well designed as Changi from user point of view. In HK for instance, you have to take two long long escalators, take the train, then again take two long long escalators to get to same floor (because train is three floors down) and then take few more escalators before you can reach the gate and reverse flow if you are coming out.

Look like the design was paid for by the escalator manufacturers..

Security scans will show sex organs
From correspondents in New York
June 11, 2008 08:07am

SECURITY scanners that can see through passengers' clothing and reveal details such as their sex organs, colostomy bags and breast size, are being installed in 10 US airports.

A random selection of travellers getting ready to board airplanes in Washington, New York's Kennedy, Los Angeles and other key hubs will be shut in the glass booths while a three-dimensional image is made of their body beneath their clothes.

The booths close around the passenger and emit "millimetre waves" that go through cloth to identify metal, plastics, ceramics, chemical materials and explosives, according to the Transport Safety Authority.

While it allows the security screeners - looking at the images in a separate room - to clearly see the passenger's sexual organs as well as other details of their bodies, the passenger's face is blurred, TSA said.

The scan only takes seconds and is to replace the physical pat-downs of people that is currently widespread in airports.

TSA began introducing the body scanners in airports in April, first in the Phoenix, Arizona terminal.

The installation is picking up this month, with machines in place or planned for airports in Washington (Reagan National and Baltimore-Washington International), Dallas, Las Vegas, Albuquerque, Miami and Detroit.

The new machines have provoked worries among passengers and rights activists.

"People have no idea how graphic the images are," Barry Steinhardt, director of the technology and liberty program at the American Civil Liberties Union, said.

The ACLU said passengers expecting privacy underneath their clothing "should not be required to display highly personal details of their bodies such as evidence of mastectomies, colostomy appliances, penile implants, catheter tubes and the size of their breasts or genitals as a pre-requisite to boarding a plane".

Besides masking their faces, the TSA says on its website, the images made "will not be printed stored or transmitted".

"Once the transportation security officer has viewed the image and resolved anomalies, the image is erased from the screen permanently. The officer is unable to print, export, store or transmit the image."

Lara Uselding, a TSA spokeswoman, said passengers were not obliged to accept the new machines.

"The passengers can choose between the body imaging and the pat-down," she said.

TSA foresees 30 of the machines installed across the country by the end of 2008. In Europe, Amsterdam's Schipol airport is already using the scanners.

Jet Air backs out of SpiceJet talks over valuation.

Jet Airways has decided to pull out of talks to buy a stake in low-cost carrier SpiceJet owing to differences over valuation, a media report said on Friday, citing sources from both airlines.
Key shareholders have valued SpiceJet at Rs 1,200 crore to Rs 1,320 crore and will not sell it below that price, the report said, quoting sources from Jet Airways.
SpiceJet has a market capitalisation of Rs 750 crore. "In the current market situation, it is not possible to go ahead with the deal,'' the report cited a Jet Airways source as saying.
"Talks are on with Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines but are stuck on valuation...there is no movement ahead as to how the business will go forward," the report quoted a SpiceJet shareholder as saying.

I was looking at this slideshow on Businessweek about an innovative small aircraft:

http://images.businessweek.com/ss/08/06 ... dex_01.htm

If Tata can build a Nano, then why can't they similarly build small aircraft like this, or perhaps slightly larger ones? They would probably be more cost-competitive, since India is very good at low-cost engineering.

But it might help civil aviation cross a threshold into a new era of privatization and small regional shuttle services.

Increasingly beginning to like BIAL other than the UDF of course. Perhaps the relatively cheap KF beer has its effect. Wireless is working and public phones (or at least one phone) are to be found, if you can penetrate the clever camouflage and go after them with a looking glass. There are airport staff around and they do answer questions unlike AAI parasites who are never to be found. BTW does anyone know what they are doing now ( I mean not that they did anything ever)..now that there is no airport? Given the pitiable state of municipal toilets in Bangalore, they could be reassigned.

The distance and in a way the taxi fares forces more people to take public transport and you can see a sprinkling of goras in BTS buses. That is good and we fund less terrorists.

Perhaps if they double its size and provide some of the basic facilities we take for granted in better airports, it could be one of India's better airports, even ignoring the AAI garbage dumps.

Birds, lizards on Delhi runway; 50 flights delayed

Press Trust Of India

New Delhi: About 50 flights were delayed by up to three hours due to bad weather, use of single runway and sighting of animals on the runway at the IGI airport on Monday inconveniencing the passengers.

About 50 flights were delayed due to use of single runway after heavy rains lashed the city between 10 am and 11 am.

The primary runway (27/9) was unavailable for one hour after a jackal, few monitor lizards and birds were spotted, a DIAL spokesman said.

"As the runway are being operated in dependent mode, when there is disruption on the runway due to safety reasons – it may lead to flight disruption," he said.

The spokesman said that spotting of animals and birds is a common phenomenon during the monsoon and heavy rains.

It had a dedicated team to control their activities but despite this flight movements are affected.

'Reliance eyeing stake in Jet Airways'.

Reliance Industries Ltd is in talks with Jet Airways Ltd to buy a 6-7 percent stake in the private airline, a news daily said, citing a source familiar with the development.

The newspaper said on Tuesday Reliance was keen to buy a minority stake as it wanted to be associated with the domestic carrier's proposed cargo airline. "The mode of Reliance Industries' investment is not finalised.
It could be issue of fresh shares or diluting promoter equity," the daily said. Spokesmen for Reliance, India's leading petrochemical maker and a refiner, and Jet were not immediately available for comment.

For Jet, a stake sale would give it cash at a time when Indian airlines are losing money due to high oil prices. A top company official told Reuters on Monday Jet planned to invest around $10-$15 million to set up a cargo unit, which would likely be launched in mid-2009 or later that year.

went to BIAL for a dropoff yesterday. didnt go inside because visitors are not allowed
for departure and the girl didnt have change to let me buy an arrival lounge ticket.

they have a good 5kms of driveway from the highway to develop in future. some cargo
operators like bluedart are building their own units.

overall it looks like a very low cost effort, rather than anything built to scale

- the car park is in the open and with no roof, passengers have to walk a long
way if it rains
- there is no underpass or ramp for passengers to reach the terminal rather
they must cross the two dropoff driveways and the exit lane for the big
buses - not good, someone is going to get crushed by a careless bus.
- lack of seating outside, people were sitting on the concrete blocks used
as vehicle barriers
- no evidence of pay n use toilets outside
- the terminal inside looks no bigger than HAL
- no sense of style just a low cost glass n steel shoebox
- the driveway out of the parking lot continues to be only 2 lane
and has a sharp intersection. there will be backup there during
peak hrs and in future.

on the +ve side L&T built the huge trumpet flyover ver fast and
has the longest merge lane I have seen anywhere. good enough
for a 50cc moped to reach 0-100 in 45 secs.

-Underpass for trollies, may cause difficulties in pushing them up (besides, indians will probably not use the underpass).
-The terminal inside is much larger then HAL and just about right for current traffic levels. (but it cant handle further growth in traffic)

I have used the airport to depart to KL and arrived from KL and then departed to Delhi.

The airport has many short commings, but it is way better then HAL. The airport has a great layout design. it is easy to find the way arround. The carpark is much better organised then any other airport carpark. Plenty of trollies are available.

The outside area if the airport is great, it is a huge area, covered under a roof. Benches are lacking, but I think it is done on purpose, to avoid people hanging arround. But outside toilets must be provided.

I think a lot of the problems will be resolved over the next few months.

The airport cannot be compared with AAI dumps just as it cannot be compared with small town KSRTC bus stands. By any other decent standard, it fails on many fronts. The best feature of the airport is the BTS bus service.

However, it does suffer from one design flaw - the layout is straight, without a central foyer for shops / receiving / hanging out etc. This means any expansion will leave the airport even more horizontal (long) and inconvenient for shops, shoppers etc. A shop in one corner can only attract folks going to those gates, which means less business and more legging for users.

Had they designed with one large central area and one or two spurs, more can be added later. Now they have to only expand sideways. If they have to provide more room to existing gates, even that is difficult as it involves knocking either the rear (apron/airbridge) or the front, both impractical.

Personally, i like the design, because of the reduced distance between check in and departure. A central lounge or hall, complicates things and make the way longer. The Airport is very easy to find your way arround. and it is easy to use. Both arrivals and departures are very simple.

The finish of the airport is poor, other then that, i have just good things to say about it.

This design is good for small no. of gates. Bangalore right now needs a lot more and eventually will need five times as many gates. Plus the gap between gates have been set low, should be much higher. The sort of space used for 5-6 gates has been used for about 15 gates.

Good beginning, but for paying lot more than HK/Changi, plus allowing them to profit from hotels and various other land allotments (which they dont get elsewhere) you expect a lot more.

if the wanted a straight layout as in detroit or beijing3, there should have have been
gates on both sides of a long terminal. now one side (left) is blocked by air cargo operators
and only right side is left. they can expand there but need to put aircraft gates on both
sides by extending the apron also.

the current terminal looks like it can only support around 3 x 747 parking side by side.

they had all the greenfield land yet still came up with this style more suited to a tier-2
australian or canadian city like perth, adelaide or calgary.

Landed at BIAL twice last week both domestic.
  • Arrival area looked/smelled clean
    Lots of light
    Elevators next to escalators
    Enough signs to get around
Not crowded at when we came ~5-6PM
Flat bed carousels were not appealing
Toilets would need some more water and better exhaust
Parking area was clean BMTC is doing a good job(took bus ride once). Would be better if they have some covered parking
From outside the terminal building looked kinda small
