I don't know why AAI is not updating the radar system at Chennai. There has been multiple failures over the last year, and Chennai provides service for major routes flying in/from SE Asia to mid-east etc.

From this ToI report regarding the same issue of radar failure,
AAI is planning to install two state-of-the-art radar and automate air traffic control system by the end of the year.

More on the Chennai radar issue
Answering a question on replacing the existing Mono-pulse Secondary Surveillance Radar (MSSR), Mr. Agrawal said a new MSSR would be installed on the AAI premises at Porur. It was expected to be commissioned within six months.
The previous ToI report said it would be before end of 2009, now Chairman, AAI says it will take six months. We have been hearing about the replacement for almost 3 years now. Ridiculous.

Avaiation's Rig Mantra - Capt. Ranganathan
Excerpts
Ours is a country with a base in Vedas and mythology. The Rig Vedais the oldest of the four Vedas, written more than 3,000 years back. But in the present century, a modern version RIG-Veda has been written by the civil aviation authorities in India. The best example is the event on May 8, 2007 when a private jet aircraft belonging to a business house smashed into a wall while landing in heavy rain at Indore. By all definitions it was a pure accident. But, to the experts in our civil aviation authority, it was written off as a ‘minor incident'. On board, to carry out the proficiency check of the pilot, was the Chief Flight Operations Inspector of the Director General of Civil Aviation. The word “accident” was redefined as a minor incident. Aviation safety enters the realms of mythology! The registration of the aircraft, ARV, could well be the abbreviation for the title of the article.
Image
On October 3, 2009, the crew of the Air India flight 884 enacted a mid-air drama. The fist fight that ensued in the cockpit while the aircraft was flying over Pakistani airspace and violated every single norm of flight safety is a perfect example of our wonderful safety system. The fact that the crew continued the fight even after landing and medical attention was required to treat the injuries to a few of the crew would have shocked anyone in the safety world. The airline and the Regulator are still dilly-dallying on action. All that has been achieved by the October 31, 2009 is the rebuttal of the air hostess charge of sexual harassment! This serious incident was not reported, either by the crew or the airline, to the Regulator.

dont know why but yesterday I saw a large AI plane land in HAL airport in evening, followed few mins later by another one (or the first one came around). today morning I saw two Jet airways 737 take off in quick succession from HAL.

maybe lack of overnight parking stand for some reason in BIAL and HAL rents them out.

American and Russian politicians waste more than this. And the reason is still same, they can afford it.

"Neta waste money, resources" debates are of no use. They are only good for newspapers which sells on sensationalism and negative news making, which is speciality of Indian media.

Even Israel politicians waste much more than what they should be spending but their media focuses on positive newsmaking which matters. Thats why Israel is more progressive because they think positive.

Someone should ask this idiot reporter - a minister has 1000 things to do everyday. You want him to loose 24 hours on train journey from Delhi to Mumbai?? Or, you want him cut that time to 2 hours and utilise the rest? Its simple common sense which Indian media lacks.

As a society, Indian media, journalists are a failure. They focus on sensational and negative news making. Compare this to American and Jewish media. They are pragmatic and mature. Not monkeys like those Indian journalists. Exceptions exist but in general picture is negative.

Flirting on flight? Actor assaults his co-passenger

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city ... 450295.cms

MUMBAI: Trouble broke out on board a Kingfisher Airlines flight on Friday after a Bollywood actor assaulted a co-passenger, who happened to be a musician from the film industry. According to sources, minutes after the flight landed in the city, Inder Kumar punched the co-flier who had accused him of "trying to get cosy'' with the latter's female companion.

"The incident took place on board Kingfisher's Delhi-Mumbai flight IT-310. About an hour into the flight, the Bollywood musician caught Inder Kumar getting too cosy with his partner. Subsequently, he objected to the actor's behaviour, only to enter into a heated argument with him,'' the source said. The flight attendants informed the commander about the situation on board, who in turn, decided to let the airline security handle the matter on landing in Mumbai airport.

"When the aircraft was about to land, the commander radioed the airline authorities asking for security personnel to be sent to the parking bay,'' said the source. "But tempers were flying high by then. We then saw Inder Kumar punching the co-passenger on his face which probably resulted in an injury,'' said the source.

"The CISF and airline security arrived by then and the co-passenger filed a complaint in the airport police station,'' said the source adding both went to the police station from there.

CISF and police officials could not be reached for comments despite repeated attempts. Kingfisher Airlines spokesperson declined to comment on the incident.

I was watching Air Crash Investigations on NatGeo and they were showing the mid-air collision between a kazakh airlines jet and a Saudi airlines jet that happened near Delhi in 1989. It remains the worst mid-air collision in aviation history. Although the crash was due to pilot error, one of the factors that contributed to the crash was the lack of a Secondary Surveillance Radar at Indira gandhi Airport (only the primary radar which did not show the aircraft's altitude was available).

What is more shocking is that the investigators later found that an SSR unit had already been bought and was at the airport at the time but hadn't been installed. What shocked me out of my wits was what the narrator of the show remarked after that. It took two years for the SSR unit to become operational after the crash. I sure hope that history doesn't repeat itself at Chennai.

What is wrong with Indira Gandhi International airport? It cannot handle a little fog? On Jan 1, I got stuck for four hours on the tarmac because of the fog and today I am stuck in HYD because Delhi is closed again because of the fog and chances are I will miss my connecting flight to Newark. The continental airlines told me that their flight will leave on time.

In the US i dont hear that much about fog closing/delaying flights. This month alone hundreds of flights were either delayed or cancelled. Is it lack of modern equipment or lack of pilot training (Cat III) that is causing this? How can the busiest airport in the country allow this?

Generally more of lack of pilot training.

Private airlines do not go in for en masse CAT III conversion because the expensively trained blighters will jump ship and join another airline for higher pay.

Govt airlines have the most CAT III qualified pilots.

Pilot error cause of YSR helicopter crash, says probe report
PTI, 20 January 2010, 07:26pm IST

NEW DELHI: The helicopter crash which claimed the life of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S R Reddy was caused by the error of pilots who lost control over the chopper and were engrossed for vital six
minutes trying to locate a flight manual, the probe report said today.

The report, submitted to the government by the four- member inquiry committee, said the "probable" cause of the accident was that it "occurred due to loss of control resulting in uncontrolled descent in the terrain at a very high rate of descent due to entry into severe down draught".

Yawn

Finance ministry moves for AI-IA demerger
If you can't fix it, merge it. And if you still can't fix it, demerge it. This seems to the government's prescription for Air India
and Indian Airlines which were merged in August 2007 despite widespread criticism. Interestingly, the merger has actually not moved much beyond a common billboard and a holding company.

With a rehab plan for Air India proving to be a fraught task, a proposal to undo the decision to forge Air India and Indian Airlines into a single entity has been mooted by the finance ministry. The ministry, which has to foot the bill for any revival package, is understood to be increasingly nervous over the viability of bailout plans for the floundering carrier.
Vina garu need your insight on this.

We seem to be well past that now. The GOI desperately needs to either privatize the airline (which seems to be haraam) or shut it down completely.

If they threaten to shut down the airline, all the employees who are staunchly resisting privatization will come to their senses.
They know a private management would do away with the government's notorious "Hire but Don't Fire" policy and they would have to do some work for a change. (and not be rude to customers)

Does the present UPA govt with a proclaimed policy of no privatization be able to do that? What is more likely is a slow and tortuous parasitic death.

In the 90s banks & govt companies were able to retrench because the general economic scenario was bad and thus they could not justify money from other sectors. When the economy is good and most companies are doing decently, the parasites simply suck more blood and money.

Indian Airlines lets Airbus off Rs 788 crore hook

New Delhi, January 29, 2010
First Published: 23:41 IST(29/1/2010)
Last Updated: 00:34 IST(30/1/2010)

The CBI is investigating how a clause requiring Airbus, a leading manufacturer of airliners, to invest $ 175 million in India was glossed over in an agreement it signed with Indian Airlines to sell it 43 aircraft in 2006.

Airbus was to invest that money (about Rs 788 crore) in creating training and repairs facilities in India, according to that clause as stated by the government in press statements issued then.

This was mandated by an Empowered Group of Ministers (EGOM), which monitored the purchase because of the sheer size of the deal, and it was endorsed by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, according to a statement issued by the civil aviation ministry in September 2005.

Indian Airlines was to buy 43 Airbus aircraft — 20 A319s, four A320s and 19 A321s — for $ 2 billion (Rs 9000 crore).

The delivery has already begun.

But the final agreement signed between the two sides “does not clearly mention the commitment of Airbus”, the CBI has said in a Preliminary Enquiry (PE) filed on January 14, No. DAI 1020-A-001.

“European Aeronautical Defence Systems and Airbus are working closely with Natio-nal Aviation Company of India Limited (name of the company formed by merging Indian Air-lines and Air India) to fulfill our obligation to create an MRO (Maintenance, Repair, Overhaul) in India,” an Airbus spokesperson told HT from France.

The PE has been filed against unnamed officials of the civil aviation ministry and Indian Airlines.

“There appears collusion between certain unscrupulous officials of Ministry of Civil Aviation as well as Indian Airlines, which has resulted in signing of a purchase agreem-ent in clear deviation from the decision of the EGOM,” the PE said.

“We have replied to the CBI and will provide them with whatever help they require,” said a senior civil aviation ministry official when asked for comments. He did not want to be identified.

The agency files PE as soon as it is convinced there is material evidence to investigate a case. This is turned into a Regular Case if the offence is found serious enough to be sent to court.

“A reliable information has been received that EGOM after internal deliberations made with representatives of M/s Airbus Industrie and it was decided that on purchase of 43 aircraft by M/s Indian Airlines, M/s Airbus Industrie, inter alia, would make an investment of $ 175 million,” the PE said.

“It was agreed by M/s Airbus Industrie that they would make an investment of $ 100 million to facilitate creation of, maintenance, repair and overhaul unit in India and another $ 75 million for setting-up a training centre. The minutes of the meeting of EGOM clearly reflecting the commitment of M/s Airbus regarding investment of $ 175 million was sent to Ministry of Civil Aviation.

“However, agreement signed between IA and Airbus for purchase of 43 aircrafts does not clearly mention the commitment of Airbus to invest US $ 175 million." Is there enough here to ground the deal, or merely cause some turbulence?

Modernization of 35 airports going on in full swing
Excerpts
The Airport Authority of India (AAI) was on the job of modernising 35 airports across the country and 50 per cent of the works had been completed, said Chairman V.P. Agarwal on Thursday.

Mr. Agarwal was talking to reporters after inaugurating the parallel taxiway, additional parking apron and commissioned three new Austria-made sophisticated aircraft fire tenders {at the Coimbatore airport}.

Mr. Agarwal said modernisation of Tiruchirapalli and Vishakapatnam airports had been completed while works in Mangalore, Mysore, Thiruvananthapuram, Rajamundhry, Vijayawada and Cudappah were nearing completion.

AAI also had plans for modernising 15 to 20 airports in states such as Orissa which has 21 airstrips and only one functional airport.

Airport expansion works in TN
Excerpts
As part of the modernisation of airports, Airports Authority of India (AAI) Chairman V.P. Agarwal on Thursday commissioned the parallel taxiway, three new aprons {taking the total number to eight from five in addition to an isolation bay for aircraft with security perception.} and three fire tenders, each costing Rs. 3.35 crore, at the Coimbatore Airport.

Mr. Agarwal said the terminal building was being expanded from the capacity to handle 300 passengers to 750 and soon the airport would be made international as sought by the State Government. The present capacity of 10,000-feet runway and terminal building would be adequate for demarcation with separate terminals for domestic and international operations.

Mr. Agarwal recalled the revival of Salem Airport and added that Thoothukudi modernisation was on the cards, while Tiruchirapalli has been completed and work was being expedited at Madurai airport. Once the State Government made 590 acres under acquisition process available, AAI would commence the runway expansion to 12,000 ft and another terminal building shifting the entire set up to the other side with demarcations for domestic and international operations. The work would take three years period, he said.

Opening at IGI in July: Delhi's costliest mall
You will soon be flying in and out of one of Delhi's biggest and most expensive mall. Confused? The glitzy domestic-cum-international terminal (T3) that opens from July will have a retail area larger than most malls. And, the rentals here are the highest in NCR.
----
The international side of the terminal will have the biggest duty-free area among all airports in India.
The international side of the new terminal would offer more choice than its domestic counterpart. ``International travellers will have a retail space of 18,000 sq m with a huge 3,778 sq m being devoted to duty free that will have 1,000 brands and 200 companies. This will be the biggest duty free area at an India airport. The domestic side will have 12,000 sq m retail space,'' said a DIAL official.

Actually, work on Chennai Airport started way back, at least 5 months ago. I was there in October, going to Tirupati, and I saw construction all around.

The same with Kolkata. I have been based in Kolkata for the past two years, and have seen construction on since very early last year. Its just that these airports get more coverage through reports and updates from the aviation enthusiasts than the media, which only follows up on Delhi/Mumbai most of the time.

OK, folks. For those, who asked about Chennai Airport expansion, here is some more news
On the construction of a bridge across the Adyar river, Mr. Agrawal said the work was suspended for sometime owing to flooding. Now it had restarted and was expected to be completed by September. {This bridge is crucial in extending the length of the secondary, cross runway by another 1400 metres making it 3435 m. in all while the main runway is 3680 metres long.}

The site on which the new international terminal building was coming up was rocky. To avoid disturbance to passengers, the AAI was carrying out controlled blasting.
However, the defence building, which houses signalling equipment for the Army, is still to be demolished.
The defence land issue at the Chennai airport remains unresolved and the Airports Authority of India had to modify the expansion plan of the airport, said V.P. Agrawal, Chairman, AAI, here on Saturday.

Mr. Agrawal, who arrived here after inspecting development works at Coimbatore and Madurai airports, said defence authorities were continuing to hold the property even after the AAI had constructed a building and handed it over to them. This would affect commissioning of the new terminal buildings.

“I feel bad about it as the issue has already been sorted out with the Defence Minister and the other authorities concerned.”

An exasperated AAI Chief on the adamant MoD
“I just want to tell them t don’t block my project. We’ve created infrastructure for them and still they refuse to budge from their stand. They (defence people) have already demonstrated that they are a stronger force. I accept that they are the big boss but why stop my work (airport expansion project)?

AAI had entered the defence property next to the international terminal in February 2009 for putting up structures there. The defence authorities had earlier agreed to the AAI proposal to construct a new communication building for the defence with signal transmitters in return for the existing structure at Pallavaram. While AAI kept its part of the deal and finished the work by May 2009, defence personnel stopped construction on the site.

“The home minister has spoken to the defence minister and the latter agreed. Even the state chief minister has taken up the matter but nothing has happened so far. I have given them ten times more than what they are giving us for expansion but they want the moon,’’ Agrawal said.

Air Asia aims for a full flight in India.
http://www.moneycontrol.com/news/busine ... 40525.html
His airline AirAsia is offering a return ticket to Malaysia from Indian cities for less than Rs 10,000, half the price that everyone else is charging.
Both ground handling charges and security costs remain very high. “Both the government and private Indian airports have not woken up yet. The high airport costs are one reason why no low-cost carrier has done well in India,’’ he says.
“Tony Fernandes is a brilliant guy and has lower costs than others,’’ said Gopinath. “In India airlines have formed a cartel and no one is willing to break. AirAsia and Tony are not afraid to rock the boat, they have done it in the rest of the world,” he says.
The Sepang-based parent AirAsia Bhd will start flights from Kuala Lumpur to Hyderabad, Banglore and Chennai in stages this year. This is in addition to Trichy, Kolkata, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, which are already connected. Thai AirAsia (a joint venture with Shin Corp) will start with flights from Bangkok to four points in India later this year. This will open up Phuket, Krabi and nine other points in Thailand to passengers from India, who can connect to them from the AirAsia Bangkok hub. The third company, the group’s long-haul airline AirAsia X (a venture with the Virgin group) will start flying to Mumbai and Delhi by the middle of the year with bigger A330 planes.

Those of you who are frequent flyers on American Airlines, British Airways or Cathay Pacific will find this interesting news:
Kingfisher to join Oneworld Alliance
Kingfisher Airlines Ltd. said Tuesday it has signed an initial pact to join the oneworld alliance, comprising 11 global carriers such as American Airlines and British Airways.

Kingfisher, controlled by billionaire Vijay Mallya, also applied to India's civil aviation ministry to seek approval for its membership of Oneworld, India's biggest airline by market share said.

"A target date for Kingfisher Airlines to join the alliance will be confirmed once this approval is gained," the airline said. "The process to bring any airline on board normally takes around 18 months to complete, so Kingfisher Airlines could be expected to start flying as part of oneworld during 2011."

Other members of the alliance include Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Japan Airlines and Qantas.

Sriperumbudur Airport Project Shelved
The Sriperumbudur airport project has been shelved, top Central and State government officials in the know of the project have said.

With works apace on modernisation of the Chennai airport and taking into consideration the traffic growth, the State and Union governments have decided not to go ahead with the idea of construction of a new airport at Sriperumbudur.

Senior State government officials and the Union Civil Aviation Ministry confirmed the development, and asserted that with the completion of the expansion works at the Chennai airport, there would be no need for an additional airport.

“Many major cities in the world operate with one airport. Our traffic volume cannot justify a second airport,” a State government official said.

Body scanner to make India debut at IGI

They haven't finalised the technology yet, but I say it is high time. Get the best technology available. With India being such a soft target for terrorists, privacy issues have very little importance here. We need explosive detectors too in addition to the plain vanilla X-Ray scanners.

There are explosive detectors too. Just that they aren't as large as the X-Ray scanners and only small items will fit in it. I have seen this in Bangalore and Delhi airports.
