India's first Heptathlon. Can somebody (preferably from Bengal) help her get specialized shoes? She has 6-toes and the normal average shoes causes her pain. Also she needs a nutritionist, a dentist and in general a coach.
I will be happy to help her if I can connect.

We totally wasted another gold in men's hockey with the stupidity in the semifinal against Malaysia. Our opponent would have been Japan, who beat TSP. We beat Japan 8-0 in the league stage.

Suraj,

It is ok! They got overconfident with 86 goals! Malaysia played really good and penalty shoot out is anybody's game! They should have finished the job in time only.

Let's beat the Bakis now for Bronze!

AG performance history. I don't care about total medals, just G and G+S

Code: Select all

Year G G+S
1951 15 31
1982 13 32
2002 11 23
2006 10 27
2010 14 31
2014 11 21
2018* 13 34
Summary: already the best G+S performance. Within reach of 2nd or best G performance. We have at least women's hockey, boxing and squash that could yield golds.

As far as Hockey is concerned they wasted too much energy during league matches to achieve record. I am not sure if it meaning full or meaning less if end result is not to qualify for final and eventually cost of not being first team to be qualified for Tokyo 2020.

Biggest disappointment is Boxing and some extent Weightlifting otherwise ranking and medal tally would have been different.

Yes and we came back empty handed . Mirabai Chanu pulled our of the games with an injury 2 weeks before the start .

It would have been tough too - the North Korean winner lifted 199kg, more than the 196kg that Chanu lifted to win the world championship .

Women’s weightlifting in AG , and even most men’s categories except super heavy , is world standard . We only have one world class lifter .

Damn. i know noko and cheen are powerful in that. if the CAR stans get in using their strength sports dna ..... tough
the short low-CG powerful 'mongol steppe' shape seems ideal for judo/boxing/weightlifting/wrestling.
the north europeans pull away in the upper weight categories using bone mass and size - siberia in the tsar days apparently had the tallest avg height in all of russia and the area around the baltic sea rim + siberia has been the home of many legendary 'strongmen'

They banned China and Russia for competing in Weightlifting at any international tournament. They can not compete at Tokoyo 2020. I am surprised they did not do it to NoKo.

The Norks ruled weightlifting in these games with 8 golds total, and Iran 2nd with 2 golds. But the Iranians have serious punch in the mid/higher mens weight caterories. Sohrab Moradi - the world and Olympic champ - broke the world record on the way to winning his weight category here.

With love, from ICF: firm to sponsor shoes for gold medal winner Swapna Barman - The Hindu
Hours after Swapna Barman made India proud with a gold medal and appealed for customised shoes to fit her six-toed feet, the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai opened up channels with Nike, United States, a leading manufacturer of sport footwear, for making the special shoes.

The 21-year-old Ms. Barman of West Bengal made history on Wednesday by emerging as the first Indian heptathlete to win a gold medal in Asian Games, 2018. Despite a toothache, she managed to achieve the feat.

The athlete revealed that she had six toes on both feet which hurt during training sessions and appealed for customised shoes.

Acting on the instructions of ICF General Manager Sudhanshu Mani, railway officials got in touch with Nike in the US and also established contact with the Indian High Commission in Thailand and Indonesia to reach the athlete.

“The Sports Branch of ICF is coordinating with Nike officials to expedite (manufacture and delivery of) the customised shoes. We hope to send six pairs of shoes to the gold medallist in three or four days. Though Ms Barman has nothing to do with the railways, ICF takes pride in contributing this to the athlete who has brought laurels to the nation,” a senior ICF official told The Hindu on Thursday.

Replying to Ms Barman’s tweet that “pain is the best motivator,” Mr. Mani congratulated her on the enviable feat and offered to present the shoes.

The ICF, which is the largest manufacturer of coaches for the Indian Railways, has also contributed significantly for the development of sports by establishing state-of-the-art infrastructure and many of its players/teams bagging top positions in the national sports arena.

you watch cricket, you see white bakis getting wicket via original baki import

life is so unfair :((

But then, a Pujara, Rahul Vihan, Niraj Chopra, Hima Das, Dutee Chand, Swapna Barman stands out making it all worthwhile

This asiad is the best ever for India as medals were won in hard sports and not our traditional sports.

Remaining gold prospects:
Squash women's team (they beat Malaysia who are harder to beat than finals opponent Hong Kong - Joshna Chinappa beat the legendary Nicol David)
Boxing 49kg

With G+S total of 36 now, yes this is our most successful Asiad, but we missed several golds. The men's hockey team deserves the most criticism. 0/4 golds from Kabaddi+Hockey who were supposed to return at least 2/4 or 3/4 is poor. Athletics on the other hand, was outstanding, despite losing 4-5 golds to Africans.

It really is the best Asiad ever for India because we just matched the 65 total medals that was our high mark at Guangzhou 2010. We’ll break the record with a day of full competition left.

Congrats, Bharat!

My 10 point proposal:
1. The sports ministry should "encourage" a "coalition of willing" of enterprising businessman and politicos to form Gilli Danda association at district, state and national level.
2. Size, weight, material and shape of Gilli and Danda should be standardized via these associations.
3. Competition rules should be formulated similar to archery i.e. focus on accuracy rather than strength. E.g. put a basket of standard dia and depth at some X distance with objective of putting the gilli in it for N number of tries. Create rules for tie breaker. Again enforce via associations.
4. Create singles men, women, mixed as well as team events for competitions and enforce via association.
5. Set up these Competitions similar to tennis/motor sports. Divide India in 6 zones and each zone must host a "grand slam/grand prix" tournament every year. Let's have a calendar so that these grand slam events occur every alternate month giving the sportsmen year round opportunity. Set up these tournaments from childhood onward with age specific bands.
6. Let Govt and quasi Govt dept/org like ONGC, SBI etc sponsor these tournaments.
7. Create a rating system based on performance for each age group and event combination.
8. Ensure enterprising folks (Subhash Chandra, Lalit Modi types) be at helm who can bring in enough glamour and attention in the initial years to make these tourneys successful. Lots of cheerleaders :)
9. Open the sponsorship purse string slightly wider to catch Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Mozambique, Mauritius, South Africa in these tournaments.
10. Push for Olympic entry around 2032.

A few golds guaranteed :)

Sometimes we don't even need to re-invent our game, just slot it properly.

If balance beam is a gymnastic event, I cannot fathom why we do not push Malkhamb in the same category!!!

If ribbon and hula hoops can be "floor exercise" apparatus, why not kalaripayattu!!!

Pakis are crying. Losing in hockey againat the Japanese is because of bad umpiring by,guess what, Indians!! Sore losers.
Meanwhile Pakistan hockey team manager Hasan Sardar has blamed bad umpiring a reason for green-shirts 0-1 loss against Japan in the Asian Games semi final. Sardar said the field and third umpire Javed Shiekh and V Raghu Prasad, both were Indians, were biased towards Pakistan. “All the referrals went against us and the video umpire supported the Japanese,” he said

14 gold in 2010 is a better benchmark. Those 14 golds included 2 each in Kabaddi and Billiards. Net of that its 10 gold.
Since 1982, we have never got more than 10 gold net of Kabaddi/Billiards

This time, the 13 gold excludes Kabaddi and Hockey and also excludes 6 events where Imports got Gold and we Silver.
So, if this was a truly `Asian' Games, we would have 19 gold. That would take us to 4th place - ahead of Iran. (more medals and same gold).
Exclude Indonesia which got most of its medals in indigenous events they had no serious competition in.

Our `core' sports (which I define as a medal in 50% of events) have been Shooting, Women's track, Hockey. Tennis & Squash, Compound archery,
Kabaddi & Wrestling. Over 4 AG's no country has more medals than us in these disciplines.

Boxing and Rowing had medals in 1/3rd of events (as good as other top countries).
In this AG, we have extended the core to : All Athletic events & All Racquet sports (adding Badminton and TT).
We actually got more medals in these events than China which spends 10 (at least) times more than us, only for these disciplines
Extended potential sports to: Sailing & Bridge (medals in 1/3rd of events).

We have regressed in Kabaddi, Rowing and Boxing (Rowing and Boxing had medals in 20% of events).
We also did worse than our average previous position, in Basketball, Volleyball & Handball (could have reduced our delegation by 100, by not participating in these).
Canoeing/Kayak & Cycling might have taken up disproportionately high resources better spent elsewhere. We've never done significantly better than last in these events. At least in Wushu/Kurash/Judo, participants train mostly on their own and we get the odd medal with little investment.
