Fabulous goals all of them. The three field goals all followed rapid deflections among several players who all seem to know where they are, rather than solo runs into the D. Almost impossible to defend around; more of a Dutch/German influenced form of field goal play rather than the subcontinental type where one masterful player weaves through the opposition.

The goalie is the find of the tournament for India.
I agree!! along with Harmanpreet Singh (top scorer of the tournament) drag flicker!! Lalit and Chinglingsena were also very good!
The junior hockey team is AMAZING!!! Rupinder Pal singh and Shreejas are good as seniors but now they will need to prove themselves just like Jadeja and Ashwin in Cricket!!

Sports is the key for any country to develop and become super power!!!

India beat Malaysia 2-1 to win third Asia Cup title. :)

As of now Rediff home page does not have any news about India winning the cup. Only if you go to the Sports tab , do you see it.
The Rediff home page instead has news about a wicket falling during the New Zealand India ODI....

Srikanth wins Denmark Open Super Series Premier! This is one of the 4 annual SSP events, along with All England, China Open and Indonesian Open . This year Srikanth won Indonesia and Denmark . He already won the China Open once in 2014, his first major win when he beat the legendary Lin Dan in the final in front of his home crowd .

Indian Women's Team Bag Silver in Archery World Championships.

The Indian women's compound team has bagged a silver medal after losing to Colombian rivals in the World Archery Championships.

Eyeing India's first ever gold medal, Trisha Deb, Lily Chanu Paonam and Jyothi Surekha Vennam went down 228-234 to the fourth seeded Colombian team of world record holder Sara Lopez, Alejandra Usquiano and Nora Valdez in the final played on Saturday.

This was India's fifth medal at the World Championships and all of them have been silver. It was also the first time India won any medal in the compound team archery section at the World Championships.

Korea, represented by Song Yun Soo, So Chaewon and Choi Bomin, took bronze beating Germany 235-227.

India thrash USA 22-0 in Sultan of Johor Cup 2017
NEW DELHI: The Indian junior men's hockey team pummeled a hapless USA 22-0 in a one-sided contest to record their third successive win of the Sultan of Johor Cup 2017 in Johor Bahru, Malaysia on Wednesday.

For India four players - Vishal Antil, Dilpreet Singh, Harmanjit Singh and Abhishek - scored a hat-trick each. While Harmanjit top-scored for India with five goals, Abhishek followed with four goals while Vishal and Dipreet each sounded the board thrice. Maninder Singh struck twice and Pratap Lakra, Rabichandra Moirangthem, Raushan Kumar, Shilanand Lakra and Vivek Prasad scored a goal each.

There were 10 different goalscorers from India but their opponents USA failed to score even once, succumbing to a humiliating defeat.

India began their campaign with a 3-2 win vs Japan and then defeated hosts Malaysia 2-1 on Tuesday. They next face Australia on Thursday and will meet Great Britain in their final league match on Saturday.

The US Hockey team does have few Indian (ABCD kids) players., but their men's hockey is not upto international standards. I think they are building their team by getting this exposure. Why didn't the Terroristan send their team? I guess they do not have money to spend on juniors.

Srikanth, Prannoy and Sindhu are all thru to semifinals in the French Open super series badminton event . Srikanth and Prannoy face each other. Sindhu is up against Akane Yamaguchi, who beat Saina .

Special mention to men’s double pair of Saireddy and Shetty, both 17 years old . They came close to beating the very successful world #2 Danish team of Boe and Mogensen in the quarterfinals, one day after beating another top Danish pair and the current European champions . With more big match experience they should give us some solid doubles capability for Thomas Cup and Sudirman Cup.

Srikanth is through to the final of French Open Super Series after beating Prannoy in 3 games. Sindhu lost her semifinal in straight games, though.

After a poor 2016 when his form and motivation were both questioned here, I think we can conclusively say Srikanth has totally turned the corner, to become today the best player in the world. He has three Super Series titles this year, and is in the 5th final of the year (he lost to Sai Praneeth at Singapore). He won half of the Super Series Premier 'grand slam' events - Indonesia and Denmark, and there's still the China Open he could also win. He's probably in the lead for BWF World Player of the Year for 2017.

17 years olds Rankireddy/Shetty (who were 5 years old when their opponents became European champions) vs world #2 Boe/Mogensen, three times world masters winners and 2012 Olympic silver medalists:

Suraj, yes, both his mental fortitude and defensive skills took a big leap this year. Lot more titles in store for him if he keeps injuries away. I hope he wins today. He is coming into this playing 2 exhaustive 3 setters. Nishimoto has fresher legs.

Satwik/Chiraj did an amazing job after getting drubbed in the first set. They almost had it at 17-17 in the 3rd set. Just a matter of time before they win a title.

India seems to be getting serious about hockey. A new team played under coach Jude Felix in Sultan Johor where they lost closely to England and Australia. I am getting info this may be a under 17 team in prep for the next junior world cup. The junior girls team is now under Baljeet Singh. The women's team is playing Asia Cup under Harinder Singh. A new coach for the senior team which won Asia cup. Lots of new players getting in and the competition for a position in the team is tough.

Kidambi Srikanth beats Kenta Nishimoto 21-14, 21-13 to win his fourth Super Series title of the year. :D
It is Kidambi Srikanth's sixth Super Series title overall. Srikanth took just 35 minutes to outclass qualifier Nishimoto in the final. Srikanth also became first Indian to win four Super Series titles in a season. It was a masterclass from red-hot Srikanth as he became only the fourth male player to win four or more Super Series titles in a year.

First Indian to win 4 super series in a season ? It seems he’s only the 4th player ever to do that , along with legends like Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei . No other Indian male has won 4 super series altogether, much less in one season .

Next up is the last of the grand slams - China Open in less than 3 weeks . I hope Srikanth can get enough rest in between . Sindhu too needs to freshen up, since she’s the defending champion at China Open, having won her biggest career title there last year .

Srikanth had slow start this year, only making the final of the 4th SS (Singapore) and his first win was the 5th event at Indonesia . He won Indonesia and Australia back to back, withdrew from Korea, lost to Axelsen at Japan, and then won Denmark and French back to back .

Srikanth has 4 Super Series this year, Sindhu has two and one from Sai Praneeth . Together they add up to not just the best year ever for India but also the most singles titles this year from any country . China has 11 total but only one singles and 10 doubles. Indonesia has 9 SS titles - 8 doubles and one singles . India has the third best - 7 wins, all singles . We are doing better than traditional powers like Malaysia, Korea, Denmark and newly resurgent Japan .

I was concerned two weeks of play and two tough matches will catch up with him. Awesome play from srikanth. Monk in Motion. He indicated he will be lot more selective in tournaments going forward and doubtful about China Open. Priority #1 for him should be avoiding injuries. Everything else will take care of itself.

The most important part is that Kidambi won both the finals so convincingly! Made both the finalists look like club level players. The angles on those smashes were so amazingly innovative, a treat to wach. Unlike Chinese player’s brute force approach, Indian’s have always relied on better angles, placements and net plays. Kidambi’s got good strength but man he can find angles to put it where only a contortionist can get them!

India could become the next badminton suppapowwa if we can field a couple of nice double, mix double teams. There are two titles for singles but three for doubles.

All this success is coming from one coach of one academy of one city, the potential for all India talent is limitless!

Err, Srikanth is one of the most powerful attacking players on the circuit and since the beginning his style has been aggressive play, and repeatedly resorts to crosscourt and down the line smashes, some of them at 380km/h+. Unlike Padukone era of the old, he doesn't depend on touch and placement alone. He's more like Lin Dan - control mixed with power. Of course, Lin Dan in his pomp was at another level - he has a head for the game that no one else has had. Even Srikanth can't wrong-foot people like Lin Dan could.

Saina Nehwal has returned to Hyderabad since the great Indonesian coach Mulyo Handoyo started worked at the Gopichand Academy. Mulyo was former world and Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat's coach. He started in February and immediately the entire team seems to have gained in fitness level - Srikanth in particular. They have also got a new Indonesian doubles coach, which has helped the doubles teams. Chiraj/Satwik are a fabulous prospect. Two tall powerful hitters who literally made world #2 Boe/Mogensen almost fall apart (they finally fell apart in the final from exhaustion). They're 20 years junior to Boe/Mogensen and taller. They'll make top 20 soon, and with some good effort, enter top 10 in a year or two.

India comfortably beats China 4-1 in women's Asia cup. China is the highest ranked (FIH) Asian team at 8. India at 12. This is Harinder's first outing as senior women's coach.

There is something called "Youth Olympics" in which 14-18 years old participate in most games like Seniors. The next one is scheduled for 2018 at
Buenos Aires in Argentina.

India's Junior rowers qualified for Youth Olympics in 2018
http://www.worldrowing.com/news/asian-c ... mpic-games

Qualification took place in the four YOG events: the junior men’s and women’s single sculls, and the junior men’s and women’s pair.

Three boats qualified in the junior men’s single sculls (China, Japan and Hong Kong), three in the junior women’s single sculls (Chinese Taipei, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and Uzbekistan), one in the junior men’s pair (India) and one in the junior women’s pair (Thailand).

Qualification was based on the finishing order at the Asian Rowing Junior Championships in each of these four events. The top three places in the single sculls and the first place in the pairs were eligible to qualify for the Youth Olympic Games.

However, as some nations had already qualified their boat at the World Rowing Junior Championships, other nations who were not among the top-finishing boats in Singapore were able to qualify for the YOG. Uzbekistan, Hong Kong and India earned these tickets.

Uzbekistan finished fourth in the junior women’s single sculls and qualified instead of first-placed China who had already qualified earlier this year at the World Rowing Junior Championships in Trakai, Lithuania. Hong Kong finished fourth in the junior men’s single sculls and qualified instead of third-placed Uzbekistan who had already qualified a men’s boat in Lithuania. Finally, India finished second in the junior men’s pair, but qualified instead of first-placed Uzbekistan who had already earned a spot.

I didn't mean to imply he is in Padukone mold or not aggressive. His smashes or amazingly fast but they are not generated by brute forces which most of the time comes back at you and you gotta keep smashing back until someone makes a point. What I was pointing to was that his smashes have amazing angles, they are made effortlessly and power is generated by timing not brute hammering. Well just my opinion!

I didn't know about the Indonesian coach Gopi's got big heart. I think he remains the chief coach for them all

Yes, Srikanth is indeed an intelligent player, not simply trying to hit hard. He has great court craft and the ability to mix his power with control. None of the Indian players - men or women - are known as touch artistes anymore. Srikanth and Prannoy are both known for aggressive play. Sindhu has power and reach. Saina is shorter but tenacious and hard to beat.

Prannoy can be another Srikanth with greater stamina. He repeatedly beats 1-2 big names and then loses the next round. He's beaten all the 3 greatest players - Lin Dan, Lee Chong Wei (multiple times) and Chen Long, something very few on the circuit can claim, and yet has not made a single Super Series final yet. His smash heavy game drains him of energy, and he needs to gain fitness to play the way he likes to play, for an entire tournament. No glory in beating world #1s one day and then losing next day.

Gopichand is still the big boss. But he knows he cannot run the academy himself and got help where he needs it. Gopi is testament to what Indian sport needs - a smart capable coach who builds a coaching and training base that generates champion after champion. The Indonesians often mention on badminton fora and youtube comments how stupid it was to let Mulyo go, because it's costing them while India's doing way better.
Coach Handoyo’s single-minded aim

Kazakhstan has lost all of their games (7-0 to Japan, 1-0 to Thailand, 9-1 to South Korea. There are only 8 teams and thus all qualified to play in quarterfinals. Rankings-wise:
China: 8
SoKo: 9
Japan: 11
India: 12
Source: FIH Rankings

These are the top 4 Asian women's hockey teams. It's actually India beating China (in the group stage) and Japan comprehensively that's a big upset. We also beat China in the Asian women's champions trophy final last year, and they're itching for revenge.
