Indian shuttlers, including P V Sindhu and Saina Nehwal, have been handed tough draws at the All England Championships, where the country has not won a title in the last 18 years.

Olympic and World Championship silver medallist Sindhu, who had reached the semifinals here last year, will open her campaign against South Korea’s Sung Ji Hyun, while Indonesia Masters champion Saina takes on Scotland’s Kristy Gilmour in the first round of World Tour Super 1000 tournament, which begins here on March 6.

Both Sindhu and Saina are currently playing at the Senior National Championships and will head straight to Birmingham from here for the prestigious tournament.

Sindhu will have to be cautious against Hyun, who had defeated her at the Hong Kong Open last year. If she gets past Hyun, the Indian is likely to face third seed Chen Yufei in the quarter-final.

Former world no. 1 Saina, who had reached the All England final in 2015, made a good start to the new season with a semifinal finish at the Malaysia Masters and a title win at Indonesia.

But the London Olympics bronze medallist is expected to face world no. 1 Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei in the quarter-finals. Saina had lost her last 11 encounters against Tai, who had an injury-marred end to the last season.

The Indian duo will also fancy their chances after three-time world champion Carolina Marin of Spain has been ruled out due to the knee injury suffered during the Indonesia Masters final.

In men’s singles, Kidambi Srikanth, who missed the Senior Nationals due to a minor issue with his ankle, will take on Frenchman Brice Leverdez in the opening round. He is likely to meet world no. 1 Kento Momota in the quarter-finals. The seventh seeded Indian had lost to Momota five times last season.

Sameer Verma, who reached the semifinals at World Tour Finals, will start his campaign against former world no. 1 Viktor Axelsen of Denmark.

Among others, B Sai Praneeth and H S prannoy will face each other in the opening round with the winner likely to take on Indonesia’s Anthony Ginting.

Indian women’s doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnapa and N Sikki Reddy will be meeting seventh-seeded Japanese duo of Shiho Tanaka and Koharu Yonemoto, while Meghana Jakkampudi and Poorvisha S Ram will square up against Russia’s Ekaterina Bolotova and Alina Davletova.

In men’s doubles, National champion Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy will face China’s Ou Xuanyi and Ren Xiangyu in the first round.

The last time an Indian had won the All England Championship was way back in 2001 by current national coach Pullela Gopichand, while Prakash Padukone was the first from the country to win the coveted crown in 1980. PTI

Indian skipper Harmanpreet Singh has been honoured with the 2018 Player of the Year award by the Asian Hockey Federation while women's team striker Lalremsiami bagged the Rising Player of The Year prize.

Harmanpreet led the Indian team to an unbeaten streak at the Asian Champions Trophy in Muscat where the team was declared joint winners with Pakistan.

He also contributed to the team's silver medal win at the FIH Champions Trophy in Breda and continues to remain instrumental in the Indian midfield.

The 18-year-old Lalremsiami, on the other hand, has shown remarkable progress in the women's team with her impressive performance as a striker at the 2018 World Cup, the Asian Games where the team won a historic silver.

She was also a part of the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires where the under-18 team won a silver.

The Indian men's team was awarded the Best Performance of The Year for being the only Asian side to have reached the top eight at the World Cup in Bhubaneswar.

The team also came up with a historic silver medal feat at the FIH Champions Trophy in Breda, repeating its success from the 2016 edition.

Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik stunned reigning World champion Petra Olli of Finland to enter the final of the women's 65kg category freestyle at the Dan Kolov 2019 wrestling meet in Ruse, Bulgaria on Thursday.

The Indian outclassed Olli 4-1 in the semi-finals.

Sakshi will next meet Henna Johansson of Sweden in the gold-medal clash on Friday.

Sakshi has won a bronze medal in the 58kg category at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Top Indian shuttlers Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth had to toil hard to seal their places in the quarter-finals of the $1million All England Championships in Birmingham on Thursday.

While Saina rallied her way to a 8-21, 21-16, 21-13 win over Denmark's Line Højmark Kjaersfeldt in a 51-minute contest, seventh seed Srikanth recovered from a mid-game slump to register a 21-17, 11-21, 21-12 win over Asian Games champion Jonatan Christie, his first victory over the Indonesian in the last three meetings.

Eighth seeded Saina is expected to take on her nemesis and two-time champion Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei, an opponent who defeated her in last 12 outings, while the 26-year-old Srikanth will face World No 1 Kento Momota of Japan, who has beaten the Indian five times last season.

A 2015 finalist at the tournament, Saina was blown away by World No 19 Line in the opening game but the experienced campaigner kept her cool to take the match to the decider and eventually come up trumps against her Danish rival.

"She's a very good player and she fights right until the end. In this tournament I've not felt very well from the start as I've been suffering with diarrhoea but I'm just going on," said Saina, who had defeated Scotland's Kristy Gilmour 21-17, 21-18 in her opening match.

"In the first set I felt like I was not able to move as I was feeling really heavy and sluggish. In the second and third set I warmed up a bit more and got into the rhythm. I tried to catch her out as much as possible but it was not easy at all with the condition I'm in."

On her possible clash with Tzu Ying, Saina said: "That will be a very tricky match. She is an excellent opponent. She's very good at deception and can catch you out with well disguised set-plays. It's not easy to play against someone who has such an arsenal of great shots. As I say though, I will try my best."

In other matches, former Singapore Open champion B Sai Praneeth's fight lasted just 35 minutes as he went down 12-21, 17-21 to 24-year-old Ng Ka Long Angus in the second round. It was his third loss to the World No 15 from Hong Kong.

On Wednesday, Sameer Verma squandered a first game advantage to go down fighting 21-16, 18-21, 14-21 to former world champion and World No 1 Viktor Axelsen of Denmark to bow out of the tournament.

The women's doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy fought a gruelling battle before losing 21-16, 26-28, 16-21 to seventh seeded Japanese pair of Shiho Tanaka and Koharu Yonemoto.

Sikki and Pranaav Jerry Chopra, who is coming back from an injury, lost 21-23 17-21 to Hong King's Chang Tak Ching and NG Wing Yung in the mixed doubles.

The men's doubles pair of Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy also lost 19-21 21-16 14-21 to the Chinese combination of Ou Xuanyi and Ren Xiangyu.

Srikanth, who had disposed off France's Brice Leverdez 21-13 21-11 in the opening round, came into the second-round match with a 2-3 head-to-head record against Jonatan.

Srikanth lead 5-0 lead initially. Jonatan tried to dominate the net and narrowed the led to 5-7 before the Indian rode on his deception and a couple of angled returns to grab 11-7 advantage at the break.

Srikanth's tricky play kept Jonatan on his feet as he moved to 19-15 with two smashes and went to game point when his rival hit long. Two game points were saved by the Indonesian before the Indian unleashed a smash to grab the bragging rights.

In the second game, Jonatan injected more pace in the rallies and grabbed the first six points. Srikanth was left to do the catch up act as Jonatan opened up a 11-6 lead at the breather and eventually took the match to the decider after converting nine game point opportunities.

In the third game, Srikanth added more power to his strokes while Jonatan committed simple errors to trail 2-7. Jonatan then took a medical timeout due to a problem in his left foot.

On resumption, the Indian grabbed a 11-4 advantage at the interval. Srikanth didn't allow the game to slip away after the interval even as Jonatan crumbled.

We've paid $1.6 million compensation to BCCI: Pakistan Cricket Board

KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board has paid the BCCI approximately $1.6 million as compensation after losing the case it filed against the Indian Board for allegedly not honouring a bilateral agreement, PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani claimed on Monday.

The PCB had filed a compensation case against the BCCI last year before the ICC's Dispute Resolution Committee, demanding around $70 million. The ICC dismissed it and asked the PCB to compensate the legal cost to the BCCI.

"We incurred cost of around $2.2 million on the compensation case which we lost," Mani said.

"The ICC committee did accept that Pakistan had a case and that is why the damages/cost we had to pay to the Indian board was around $1.6 million," Mani said. Mani insisted that besides the amount paid to India to cover the legal cost, the other expenses were related to legal fees and travelling.

According to the PCB, the agreement with India, which it claimed was a binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), ensured Pakistan six bilateral series between 2015 and 2023. Pakistan said the BCCI reneged on the commitment, causing it losses running into millions of dollars.

The Indian Cricket Board, however, maintained that the discussion with PCB was a proposal and never a legally binding MoU.
Ultimately, the BCCI's assertion was accepted by the ICC's dispute resolution committee

India's perennial problem of conceding goals at the fag end of a match hurt them again as Korea equalised in the final minute for a 1-1 draw in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament in Ipoh, Malaysia on Sunday. India took the lead in the 28th minute through Mandeep Singh and looked set to earn their second consecutive win of the six-team tournament, but a defensive error led to Jonghyun Jang scoring from a penalty corner just 22 seconds from the final hooter.

The match was stopped in the fourth quarter due to heavy rains with around eight minutes left in the match. India had defeated Japan 2-0 in their opening match on Saturday.

India made an attacking start with midfielder Vivek Sagar Prasad creating space inside the striking circle within the first minute but the Korean defenders held strong to avert an early goal.

The Koreans immediately launched a counter attack, entering India's circle, but defender Surender Kumar tackled well to clear the ball.

India got two more scoring opportunities but failed to convert them. A quick-thinking Mandeep Singh gave India their first penalty corner in the 10th minute with a good tackle in the baseline.

The opportunity was, however, wasted due to poor execution as both sides could not score in the first quarter.

India won their second penalty corner in the initial minutes of the second quarter but the drag-flick was saved by the Korean goalkeeper.

The following minutes saw Korea execute the full-press to limit India's circle entries.

Though the tactic was good, they lost three players (Kim Hyeongjin, Jihun Yang and Lee Namyong) to green cards that reduced their strength to eight players.

The situation was capitalised by India as they found easy gaps to make circle entry and the experienced Mandeep Singh struck the first goal for India in the 28th minute.

India kept a good structure, relied on strong defence with precise marking and constantly pushed the Korean defence to make forays into the striking circle.

Playing in rain after the third quarter began, a defensive error on India's part saw Korea being awarded their first penalty corner of the match.

But India's rusher Amit Rohidas did well to ward off the danger and keep India's lead intact.

With a little over eight minutes remaining for the final hooter, the game was stopped due to rain. When play resumed, Korea put up an attacking front to win back-to-back penalty corners, but did not get any success.

With 53 seconds remaining, Korea won another penalty corner, but Jonghyun Jang's powerful drag-flick was brilliantly saved by India goalkeeper P R Sreejesh.

A referral by Korea saw them being awarded another penalty corner and this time, Jang was on target to level the scores and snatch a draw for his side.

India will take on Malaysia on March 26, after a rest day on Monday

China copying Pakistan in cultivating Bollywood Jaichands to push its agenda.

Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan is set to take part in the Beijing International Film Festival (BIFF), scheduled to be held between April 13 and April 20. Legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray's classic Pather Panchali and Khan's last release Zero are among the five Indian films that have been listed to be screened during the event. Zero, which also stars Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif, will close the movie gala.

The Indian movies will be showcased under the category of films from its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) countries, despite strong reservations expressed by India over the trillion-dollar project. The festival also features a segment dedicated as 'India Week'.

It is significant that China has included the Indian movies clubbing them along with those from the BRI countries ahead of this month's second Belt and Road Forum(BRF) which is likely to be boycotted by New Delhi. India has objected to BRI as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) which is its flagship project is being laid through Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Bajrang Punia follows up CWG and AG gold medals with gold in the Asian championships.

While only winning silver and narrowly missing out on gold, Shivpal Singh threw 86.23m in Javelin in the Asian Athletics Championships. Neeraj Chopra withdrew to recover from an injury. The throw was 4m further than Shivpal has ever thrown, and easily continental winning standard, if not close to world standard. We have three throwers capable of 85m+ now - Neeraj, Davinder Singh Kang and Shivpal.

Yes, they both started out at the same time with the same initial success but Saurabh has clearly done much better than Manu since. While she wins titles here and there (especially with him in paired events), Saurabh is now junior Olympic champ, junior world champ, Asian champ, senior world champ and won both paired events at the 2019 World Cup circuit so far, in addition to holding both junior and then senior world records.

There's good news hidden in there - the 2nd gold was a women's one, and what's more, the lady beat up the Chinese reigning world champion. We've generally been better in lower weight categories. I've not seen us competitive in mens or womens boxing/wrestling in >75kg classes, until now.

Pooja Rani won India their second gold medal at the Asian Boxing Championships 2019 on Friday as she won the gold medal in 81kg category, just a couple of hours after Amit Panghal won India their first.

Pooja had an extremely tough competition in front of her with reigning world champion Wang Lina but the Indian fought all odds to bag the elusive yellow metal.

The Japanese are putting a lot of resources into women's wrestling in a bid to win a lot of golds at at Tokyo. The Chinese aren't far behind. It's not the best place to hope for major medals at Tokyo. Bajrang has a podium chance in men's freestyle, potentially to make final too.
