India hold China to 0-0 draw in football. While the score is good considering China is ranked 76 to India's 97, India is still not at international level. Played a defensive match and had some scoring chances. Two Chinese shots hit the goalpost. I feel there is a marked improvement in fitness compared to the past but lacking in technical skills, speed and football brain. However, considering India started playing real professional football only 4 years back this is a good score.

Kidambi Srikanth staged a magnificent recovery to beat five-time World champion Lin Dan of China 18-21, 21-17, 21-16 and enter the men's singles quarter-finals at the Denmark Open on Thursday night.

The No. 6-ranked Indian ace will meet compatriot Sameer Verma on Friday.

Verma held his nerve to get the better of Asian Games champion Jonathan Christie of Indonesia 23-21, 6-21, 22-20 in another second round match earlier in the day, after Saina Nehwal had defeated world No. 2 Akane Yamaguchi of Japan for the first time in four years to enter the women's singles quarter-finals.

Srikanth, who had lost three of his four meetings against the now No. 14-ranked Dan, was caught on the wrong foot early in the match as the Chinese raced to an early lead. The defending champion, however, gradually got into his stride and matched Dan, whom he beat at the China Open in 2014 to win the title.

After losing the opening game narrowly, he called the shots after taking a 5-1 lead in the second. The Chinese engaged Srikanth in long rallies to cut the deficit before the scores ran neck and neck till 11. Four straight points gave the Indian a 16-11 lead, which he maintained to take the second game 21-17 and level the match score.

In the decider, Srikanth again started off well and established a 10-5 lead. With the Chinese appearing to run out of steam the Indian repeatedly scored with deft placements to take match-point at 15 and sealed the issue with a low smash.

India beat Pakistan 3-1 at Asian Champions Trophy hockey.

India continued its dominance over arch-rivals Pakistan with a 3-1 win to register their second consecutive win at the Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament here on Saturday.

India had defeated Pakistan 4-0 in the final edition of the Champions Trophy earlier in the year before registering a close 2-1 win over the arch-rivals in the Jakarta Asian Games.

But it was Pakistan who stunned the Indians by taking the lead as early as in the opening minute of the match through Muhammad Irfan Junior’s strike.

India, however, came back into the match in the second quarter when skipper Manpreet Singh (24th minute) drew parity for his side as both the teams went into the breather locked at 1-1.

India took the lead in the 33rd minute through a field strike from Mandeep Singh. The Indians extended their lead to 3-1 when striker Dilpreet Singh scored another field goal in the 42nd minute.

Thereafter, the Indians defended in numbers as Pakistani forwards failed to breach the rival backline. It was India’s second consecutive win in the tournament after having thrashed hosts Oman 11-0 in their opener.

Angad Vir Singh Bajwa created history on Diwali eve by shooting a gold in the men's skeet final of the 8th Asian Shotgun Championship registered a world record score.

With the win, Bajwa became the first Indian skeet shooter to win a gold medal at any continental or world level event.

It was perfect shooting from Bajwa on the night as she shot 60 out of 60 in the final round to grab the top spot defeated Chinese Di Jin's 58. Saeed Al Maktoum of UAE won the bronze medal with a score of 46.

It was Di Jin who had topped the qualifying round with a score of 124 out of 125 while Bajwa registered 121 to be tied at second with three other shooters. In the shoot-off in qualification for minor positions, Bajwa shot 15 targets compared to Al Maktoum's 16 and finished third.

In the final though, Bajwa was on a completely different level and did not make a single mistake to get the perfect score. He completely snuffed out a world class field and delivered on the promise that he has been showing for years.

"This is the best Diwali gift to the nation. We are all so happy for Angad as he has finally realised his true potential and all his hard work over the years is beginning to yield fruit. I am certain that we can expect better things from him in the future," Raninder Singh, President of National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), said.

Gurjoat Khangura, the other Indian in the fray, shot 117 in qualification to finish 13th.

There was good news for India earlier in the day as well with the 10m rifle mixed team pairing of Elavenil Valarivan and Hriday Hazarika also striking gold.

Valarivan and Hazarika won gold with a junior world record while Mehuli Ghosh and Arjun Babuta bagged the bronze medal in the same event.

Elavenil and Hriday earlier qualified for the five-team final in third position with a combined score of 835.8. Mehuli and Arjun logged 833.5 to qualify in fourth place.

In the 45-shot final, the gold medal winning pair made a strong start and led from the start, except briefly going into second after 20-shots, to the silver winning Chinese pair of Shi Mengyao and Wang Yuefeng.

They eventually finished with a score of 502.1, which is a world and Asian junior record in the event. The Chinese pair finished with 500.9.

The pair of Mehuli and Arjun were third throughout the length final and ended with a score of 436.9 to claim bronze.

The juniors had begun their campaign on Monday with three silver and a bronze medal with Valarivan finishing third in the individual women's air rifle junior competition and silver in the team format. Mehuli and Arjun had also won silver in the team competition.

India has so far won seven medals from the competition with two gold, three silver and two bronze.

Bakistani hockey players getting no salary might withdraw from world cup.

LAHORE: Pakistan’s national hockey team is a strong unit and the players are experienced enough to perform well in the upcoming World Cup, according to newly-appointed head coach Tauqir Dar.

However, for Tauqir, the team needs more motivation than coaching — and that motivation will come through timely funds to ensure the team’s participation in the mega event as well as clearing the players’ outstanding dues.

“At this moment the participation in the World Cup is uncertain due to lack of funds,” Tauqir told Dawn during the team’s camp here at the National Hockey Stadium on Tuesday.

“Most of the players are experienced as they have played around 300 matches so they know their job well but at this moment the big job is just to motivate them by clearing their dues and providing them with the best facilities to train,” he added.
Article continues after ad

The Pakistan Hockey Federation is on the verge of bankruptcy and has openly asked for assistance from the prime minister, the body’s patron. It is also feared that the lack of funds can also force Pakistan to withdraw from the World Cup

Tauqir said the PHF is also trying to bring in funds through sponsors to pay off the players’ remaining dues and also cover training expenses.

“Unfortunately, the boys are turned into beggars asking for their daily pays, which is their right,” regretted Tauqir.

Tauqir said a PHF delegation will also meet Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ehsan Mani on Thursday to seek some grants.

In early 2000s, the then PHF chief Lt. Gen. Aziz had received a loan of Rs200 million from then PCB chairman retired Lt. Gen. Tauqir Zia. The amount has not been returned till present.

Tauqir also crticised former players who have blamed the PHF for the current conditions.

“At this stage of the World Cup our own Olympians are abusing the PHF,” complained the 1984 Olympics gold medal winner.

“On one end the players are not getting their dues while Olympians are also bashing the PHF just for politics ignoring the importance of the event which is just around the corner,” added Tauqir.

Tauqir said Pakistan will be a competitive side at the World Cup despite being in a group which features big sides, namely Germany, Holland and Malaysia. He said in modern hockey it is all about who performs on the day.

“During the Asian Champions Trophy, Japan conceded nine goals against India but leveled 1-1 against Pakistan before losing 2-3 to India in the semi-final. So it is the matter of the given day and a team which will make mistakes will pay the price,” Tauqir said.

Tauqir said Pakistan performed well during the 2014 Asian Champions Trophy in India and also made to the World Cup and that it can be expected that the team will repeat the feat.

“In the 2014 Champions Trophy our boys did a great job on Indian soil beating the home team to the surprise everyone and played the final,” said Tauqir.

“They are the same boys who are now going to India again so we should expect another great show,” he added.

Tauqir said Pakistan’s show at the recently-concluded Asian Champions Trophy in Oman was also commendable and that to share the trophy with India was not ‘a minor achievement’.

Tauqir said he might have been appointed as the national side’s assistant manager but the PHF had said that it would not be possible to keep Hasan Sardar both as manager and head coach in the dugout.

The PHF almost enforced on Tauqir to accept the job of head coach on Tuesday while also appointing Danish Kaleem and Rehan Butt as assistant coaches.

Danish has replaced Mohammad Saqlain, who was sent back from Oman after a heated argument with Sardar during the 3-1 Asian Champions Trophy loss against India.

I think Pakis are looking for an excuse not to participate. They know they will be beaten by almost all the teams and may finish last in the standings. Hence for H&D reasons they do not want to come.

Following their individual performances, Chaudhry and Bhaker won the mixed team gold with a world record:
Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary win mixed event gold with junior world record
Teen shooting sensations Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary shattered the junior world record on their way to winning the 10m air pistol mixed team gold medal in the 11th Asian Airgun Championships here on Friday.

On the concluding day of the tournament, the Indians got the better of the Chinese pairing of Wang Xiaoyu and Hong Shuqi in the final.

India’s junior shooting squad thus ended the championship with a tally of 11 medals, including four gold.

Youth Olympic Games champions Manu and Saurabh finished with a score of 485.4 in the final, well ahead of the Chinese who managed 477.9.

A second Chinese team won bronze while India’s second pair in the finals, Abhidnya Patil and Anmol Jain, finished fourth.

In the qualifying, the pair of Manu and Saurabh were second among five teams, with a combined score of 762 out of 800. They logged the same score as the table topping Chinese pair of Wang and Hong, but lost out due to lesser inner 10s.

Abhidnya and Anmol were third with a total score of 760.

This was Saurabh’s third gold medal in two days having won the team and individual 10m air pistol events on Thursday, while Manu bagged the team silver.

Rookie boxer Manisha Moun punched above her weight to outclass Christina Cruz of the United States in a unanimous verdict to advance to the 54kg pre-quarterfinals of the AIBA Women’s World Championships here on Friday.

The 20-year-old Haryana boxer, who was making her debut in the World Championships, was in complete control during the whole of first round against the American, who is almost twice her age.

The 36-year-old from New York is a two-time World bronze medallist but Manisha was not the one to be intimidated by the reputation of the opponent.

Manisha, who had won a gold at the India Open and a a silver in the Silesian Women’s Boxing championship in Poland this year, was the clear winner as she dominated all the three rounds.

The five judges have her a unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-26, 30-26, 29-28).

In the pre-quarterfinals on Sunday, Manisha now faces reigning world champion Dina Zholaman of Kazakhstan, whom she had beaten in the Poland event.

Manisha’s mother Usha Rani and gransmother Saroj Devi, who had come all the way from Kaithal, were at the stands to watch her bout at the K D Jhadav Stadium.

“I am very proud for winning my first bout in the World Championships. I have proved that I can be at this stage. I will give my best and see how far I can go. I am confident of doing well in the coming rounds,” she said.

“My next bout is against the world champion but I have beaten her in Poland. It will be tough but I can beat her,” she added.

Asked about the strategy for the bout, she said everything went according to plan.

“My coaches told me to play from a distance. Her (Cruz’s) right was very strong so coaches told me to watch here right. I tried to miss his punches from the right and attacked from the left. That was the plan and I did just that,” she said.

“The first round was about observing my opponent and find out what to do and what not to do. In the second round, I went with the plan and I was able to land my punches. In the third round, I went for attack and gave the best attack and won the bout,” she added.

Zholaman, who beat Muzuki Hiruta of Japan 4-1, said Manisha was a “good” boxer.

“I lost to her (Manisha) in Poland but that is boxing, it happens. She is a good boxer,” said the Kazakh. PTI

The greatest female boxer in the world. It's a pity they eliminated her weight class (Light Flyweight 45-48kg) at the Olympics and Asian Games. The lowest weight class at OG/AG is the Flyweight (up to 51 kg), which is what she won bronze in at London 2012. It's hard to win a higher class. It's not merely about gaining some weight - the physiology of the opponents will be different.

India-Belgium 2-2 draw. India should have won 3-1. Missed one sitter and conceded a goal through defensive lapse. If they beat Canada comfortably then they will head group and go directly to QF where they are likely to meet Germany or Holland.
