Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
Both kabaddi teams are in the semifinal already. The loss to Korea was a group match, and will probably just mean we finish second in the group and face the 1st finisher of group B, which could be either Iran or TSP.
Today's medal contenders:
* Women's pistol and rifle shooters
* Four Greco-Roman wrestlers
* Mens and womens compound archery
* Wushu semifinals
* Gymnastics women's team and swimming

Rahi Sarnobat wins gold.
Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
That was an unexpected gold. Manu Bhaker broke topped the qualification with a games record and was one point short of the world record, and I thought she would win the final. But she lost her nerve, while Rahi held hers in a thrilling games record performance in the shootout. We are second to China in shooting, ahead of regular powers like Korea and Japan. Hopefully Manu can win gold in the other shooting event she's in tomorrow.
Wrestling and Shooting dominate our medals tally so far. Both groups have overperformed. The wrestling is done, but more shooting medals are possible, including gold.
The wushu players all finished with bronzes though, but still it's creditable to win 5 medals in sports like wushu and sepak takraw that people hardly knew we were even represented in.

More medals expected in Athletics, Rowing, Archery, Kabaddi and Hockey

Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
Let's not get carried away about thrashing minnows. All that matters is that we win both golds in hockey and kabaddi.
Personally, my opinion is that our almost 500 member contingent is misleadingly large. Almost 100 of them are the 2x teams in hockey and kabaddi who together can win at most 4 medals of any color. A dozen shooters can have shown they can win many more medals.

Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
Sometimes thrashing minnows gives a great psychological advantage.
Imagine a barely 18 yr old coming from a remote village in India and their first major international game., it helps psychologically to see the opponent as just another human. Agreed some of them are exposed to U18 international championships but there is a huge psychological pressure for a 18 year old to not just show up but perform and perform consistently and that too internationally. This kind of thrashing one gives to "minnows" in an international outing clearly gives them the necessary psychological boost to face formidable adversaries.
In fact they will be itching to go against formidable adversaries.

Great for team building as well. Hence a little celebration on this pages does not hurt.Having endured a demoralising defeat at the Women's World Cup to Ireland in shootouts earlier this month, a result like this was just the shot in the arm the players needed for a tournament where gold medal will also secure entry into the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Just underlying my point - all victories big or small need to be celebrated with a feet firmly planted on ground, in shooting:Interestingly, Marijne was also overheard after the first quarter by the on-pitch camera telling his players, "I want you hungry. One-two, one-two passing. What's important is your behaviour."
...
"One of the best qualities of the women's team which emerged in this match were that they were ruthless," former India hockey captain Viren Rasquinha told Firstpost after the game. "It's easy to ease off (when your lead is huge), because you tend to get bored after a while. There seems to be sense of urgency and ruthless in this team. I didn't feel at any point that they let the pace or the intensity drop."
Or in wushuThe excitement in the final stages gave the Indian fans little time to mull over 16-year-old Manu Bhaker’s meltdown in the final. She searched desperately for the form that she had enjoyed while scoring a Games Record score of 593 points in the qualifying round. The 10s that the 16-year-old found, especially in the three series in the rapid stage, were just not coming her way.
In archeryThe coaches believed that 17-year-old Roshibina Devi had won her first round of the semifinals against China’s Cai Ying Ying but in a sport with subjective scoring, she had to up her game and turn the tables. However, the teenager from Manipur allowed that decision to rankle her so much that a comeback was well-nigh impossible
Back to HockeyThe Indian camp expressed confidence that it would be in contention for gold medals. Its awareness that it has to shoot consistently and not worry as much about what the others in the draw are doing, is acute. It believes that if it does not make mistakes, it can give the formidable Korean team a contest worth remembering.
Knowing chief coach Harendra Singh, he would not be very happy that the team was able to convert just nine of the 21 penalty corners and made capital of just 17 of the 39 opportunities. Of course, the match was a romp in the park.

On a different note., some time back making to India's national team and finding a central/state govt. job itself was a laudable goal. Then it was getting ad endorsement revenue and now it is all about how I can kick a$$.

How the shooters fare globally
An analysis of Manu and Rahis performance in the 25m pistol yesterday. Summary :
- Manu’s qualification score would not just have helped her make the Olympic final in any past Olympics but she would have broken the Olympic record with her 593/600 too. The world record is 594.
- Rahis performance in the final would probably win at least a medal in any world level event .
Manu Bhaker is just 16 . She’s a potential world and Olympic champion once she learns to handle the final pressure . She’s already a two time World Cup gold medalist and CWG champion and has one more chance to win a gold in this AG.

Guess the men’s kabaddi team got what they deserved.
Shout out to Shardul Vihan who won silver in men’s double trap . The fella is FIFTEEN . Think about that - carrying around a large bore gun at that age performing near world standard . Our youngistanis ain’t no SDREs anymore .

As for S. Koreans just look at the medals chart. The chini-types are simply TFTA in Asia. China has 116 medals, Japan 86, SoKo 63. Any one of those puts together a team at anything, they’ll be competitive.
We have crap neighbors which leads to pitiful competition. Only the pakis have medaled from the Subcontinent and they got exactly one. The S. Koreans not only have the PRC and Imperial Nippon but North Korea and Taiwan too to push them.
Outside the chini-types only the Parsees are respectable with Iran. Desis beat the lowly Arabs onlee and only because of Bharat, we have no help from all the teeming masses of Pakiland, Beedee, Nepal or Sri Lanka.

Other than track n field and swimming the ag seems world class in most areas

While watching PK league I noticed most of the players are bulky, tall. This is in contrast with Mumbai local kabbadi teams who emphasis on lean, fast and very agile raiders, even short height. Very tough to catch and high average to out opposition players per raid.Vips wrote:Flip side of having the Pro Kabaddi league in India and foreign players (especially Iranians) getting good at our expense?Kashi wrote:And Men lost to Iran.

Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
Deepika has been a huge disappointment since CWG 2010. In general, I support sportspeople from disadvantaged backgrounds who don't play cricket, but I think Deepika has been hugely over-hyped for some time now. The archery federation is also to blame - they've lived on past glory and are doing little to unearth new talent, or properly develop those they have - the way all our archers faded out was an embarrassment.Supratik wrote: Deepika Kumari should retire.
I'm surprised we don't have a bigger presence in weightlifting, where we get plenty of medals at CWG.
Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
We have traditionally been stronger in compound bow archery and not recurve .
I don’t see anything wrong with kabaddi . We can’t win forever . Sporting prowess isn’t gained by holding onto old laurels but seeking new territories to dominate . Kabaddi after several days is two medals only . There are 427 golds on offer here .
Weightlifting at AG is world standard. CWG is easy pickings for us in comparison .
Despite not winning any medals, the swimmers did great, breaking national records several times over in multiple events . The only problem was that even breaking records multiple times only got them up to 4th position .

Deepika had fever and delayed her departure to Jakarta. So at least I was expecting the result. Top of that federation is in mess and funding dried up because of loosing recognition issue.
Only sport federations which really working are NRAI (National Rifle association of India) ,BAI (Badminton association of India) and Boxing Federation of India.

Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
I expect we will end this AG with approx. the same no of medals as AG 2006 (Doha) - if one excludes new disciplines. That's about 50 medals - of which 20 will be Gold+Silver, after excluding new sports like Bridge/Bowling/Sepak-takraw.
Roughly the same trend in CWG.
So, while Indian sports has significantly improved in the last decade - perhaps more than competition which has less scope for improvement its not translated to more AG or CWG gold /silvers.
One reason for this is that there is no further scope to (realistically) increase medals in sports like shooting, kabaddi, tennis, badminton, hockey, women's wrestling. In shooting, women's wrestling, baddy and tennis we've won medals in 50% of all events, while its 100% in kabaddi and hockey.
Its only the color of the medal that changes in each AG.
Roughly the same trend in CWG.

Also, other countries have improved too since Doha. We are behind the likes of Indonesia, Thailand, NoKo and Taiwan this morning.
We need to beat those smaller nations to make a move upwards. Iran is starting to stake out that fourth spot after the CJK powerhouses with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan coming up. We need to secure that fourth after Korea to be commiserate with our size and ambition.

Anas and Rajiv both through to the finals, they both look good , can be 2 medal for us and hopefully a Gold. I think we have good team to win the Gold in Mixed relay.
Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
It seems both Hima Das and Mhd. Anas have improved their timings in 400 m. The imported Bahranis are giving stiff competition. Hope both go under 51 sec and 45 sec, respectively in the finals and give their best. From there it is roughly 1 sec to an Olympic medal.

India's Pavitra takes on Pakistan's Rukhsana Perveen in the Women's Lightweight (60kg) Round of 32.
The Indian boxer dominated that first round with a good round of punches. Perveen is on the defensive in the 2nd round and Pavitra lands a solid punch on her Pakistani opponents face. Perveen decides to quit and Pavitra beats Perveen in the 2nd round itself on the basis of a technical knock out.

In Bridge we have qualify for semis in several categories and if we see the RR score we may get some medal or even gold in this unexpected event.
