:) I am sure they would have calculated all those possibilities. A win does look difficult. So getting to 280 is a good goal in itself IMO.

Common man, he saved India in the last three matches. He crossed 50 in his last 5 matches. I don't know what will make you happy. :)
You are hard to satisfy, either by Modi or by the Indian cricket team.

Should we lose this one, do we have to win both BD and SL matches or one of those two will be enough for SF berth?

We don’t HAVE to win any matches to make it to semi, but one more win will guarantee it .

Only good thing if we lose is Pakis will be out. If Pant can show his talent here, that will solve the middle order problem. Let us see.

If we lose Eng will have 10 points and game in hand. Pakis have 9 points and one game in hand. Eng plays NZ and Pakis play BD.

If pakis beat BDs big and if we lose to BD and SL like today, us and pakis will have 11 points at the end.

And New Zealand too if they lose to England. Our net rate is significantly higher than the other teams. We have to lose really badly against BD and SL to not make it to the last 4.

Commentators perplexed why India gave up the chase, especially in the last 10 overs.

We will probably play BD against the same pitch in two days. Perhaps time to leave out one spinner and play Bhuvi?

Anyway, we have a valid case to say that we were protecting our net run rate by trying to get to 300 rather than get all out at 250 or 280.

Nasser Hussain through out the match: Dhoni is the greatest finisher in the history of while ball cricket
Towards the end: Its inexplicable why Dhoni does not wan't to try and get those runs.

Read Kohli comments: the match was fixed by the BritPakis with the slow pitch, slow outfield and short 59-yard boundary so they could lift against Chahal and Kuldeep. I KNEW it! It's the old "Purity of The Turf" tactics explained in PG Wodehouse.

The the team batting second, the short boundary was a death-trap because the bounce was a random.I heard them (Tendulkar? Ganguly?) say that at the very start. The fine fast start was only for the team batting first. If they check carefully they may find that the coin used for toss was fixed too.

Indian shots were mostly along the grass, and got 1 run instead of boundaries. Pandya, Dhoni and Pant were missing or mistiming a lot: uppish strokes would have been fatal, as Pandya and Pant found out. That was the variable bounce, no doubt.

I think at the end when it was beyond question (RRR> 12) Dhoni and Jhadav played for the net run rate, however that is calculated. Yes, they would have got out for 280 if they had "gone for it" with the utterly defensive field-setting and bowling. Imagine the six-hitting record of the 4 that were to follow: SDRE Chahal and Yadav, and then 1-ball Shami and brave Boomrah. Risk of injury to any of them outweighed the benefits of a win. As it is, Jadhav got in some practice.

What blew it was Shami's full tosses and long-hops. VERY bad bowling at the death. And yeah, for that he got a 5-wicket haul. At least Chahal had the excuse that the boundaries were short (though most of the GM-pork-fed Britpakis' shots cleared by a long way because the bounce was slow and true then).

Maybe the equally GM-pork-fed Kiwis will end the Britpakis' run. I believe NZ also had similar short-boundary hanky-panky at the last WC so they must have lots of practice. Pakis are favored to beat BD, it's the choker syndrome against the mass-murderers.

And, yeah, maybe MS and KJ were getting even for MS being asked to remove the Indian Army thing from his gloves (some Pakis complained to Eye See See), so when he got hit on the thumb he remembered that. Sorry onlee Pakis! :((

Going chanakiyan and all is fine but we should have gone for the win at all costs approach. Gary Kirsten's 2011 WC team had it in them and so went on to lift the cup. Didn't care whom they faced in quarters and semis. Just win every game attitude. Middle order is a huge worry, which I hope the team management are realizing. Dhoni is no longer the finisher which Nasser kept on saying yesterday. Nothing wrong, hes aged and has his contribution. But team management must look at strategies to up the net RR in the middle and end overs. If Pandya gets out cheaply in semis and finals, then we cannot win.

Semis #2 vs. #3 is at Edgbaston: same stupid ground  . That is most likely what India will be playing so might as well get used to the ground.
The other match is at "EMIRATES" Old Trafford.
What next? "AIR CHINA" Chepauk? "PITA" Mohali?
If ENG beats NZ does NZ go to #3? If NZ beats ENG do Pakis enter semi?

If Eng beats NZ, NZ goes to number 4. If NZ beats ENG, Pakis will have to beat BD to get to 11 points. If it is a tie, they will be on 10 along with ENG but ENG will go ahead.

In the event of teams finishing on equal points in the League Stage, the ordering of teams will be decided in the following order of priority:

• The team with the most wins in the League Stage will be placed in the higher position.

• If there are teams with equal points and equal wins in the League Stage then in such case the teams will be ordered according to their net run rate in the League Stage matches (refer to 16.10.4 below for the calculation of net run rate).

• If there are teams that are still equal, they will be ordered according to the result(s) of the head to head match(es) played between them (points, then if still equal, net run rate in those matches).

• If the above does not resolve the League Stage ordering and there are teams that are still equal, the teams will be ordered as per their League Stage seedings.

• If all matches in the League Stage produce no results the teams will be ordered as per their League Stage seedings and the top 4 seeded teams will progress to Semi-Finals.

For Pak to qualify following thing need to happen:
Beat BD AND NZ beats ENG

With that slim chance the will land at 4th position. In which case they will face AUS in semi-finals.

hope BD packs them up...

It was embarrasing, the way we gave up. Dhonis NRR excuse even more so. We need only one win in next 2 games including the SL match to more than guarantee SF spot. If we cant even one of the next 2, we wont go further than SF anyway.

Anyway Dhawan's loss is huge. He more than kept RR at required level while rohit took his time.

Pant should have opened. Number 4 is more like an anchor of innings such as yuvi, ABD, hussey/clarke etc. Pant is more like gilly.

Rohit seemed pretty clear that No 4 would have been VS, but due to a toe injury, Pant stepped in for him. Let's see if that's a permanent change.

Pant bats like the legendary Rohan Kanhai, with all sorts of contortions and incredible bat speed and reactions. But in the end, what comes across is an unreliable batsman to be an opener. Aren't all his big scores in middle/late order positions? He is a good 6-hitter, surprised that he could not hit any yesterday. Rahul's back was injured by the leaping try for a catch at the boundary followed by crashing to the ground and barrier, no surprise that he got out early. Yes, loss of Dhawan hurts.
It would be difficult to imagine a more entertaining batsman than Rohan Babulal Kanhai, leading scorer for either country in last season's England v. West Indies Test series. Quick of eye and foot, he times the ball almost perfectly when executing a wide variety of strokes, some of which border upon the audacious, and at his best he can master the most formidable of bowlers.

Born on December 26, 1935, on a sugar plantation at Port Mourant, British Guinana, to which Colony his grandparents emigrated from India, he is slightly built and stands only 5 ft. 7 ins., is a non-smoker and drinks in moderation. Like most male inhabitants of the West Indies, he took to cricket as a matter of course at an early age and when eight was in the team at the local Roman Catholic School as wicket-keeper-batsman.
See Rohanji's Falling Hook Shot This was in the days of no helmet or face-mask, remember, against really murderous fast bowling.

Pant has been given a few ODI chances before the WC and was a miserable failure in all of them, showing a lack of temperament, and perhaps he needs to calm down and play more technically solid rather than trying T20 stuff in ODIs, which doesn't work most of the time. He needs more exposure in ODIs and a lot of the hype is misplaced, at least for the current WC. Kohli, Shastri and the selection committee did the right thing by not picking him despite the hype and clamour.

Now that Mayank Agarwal is in the mix, perhaps he needs to open, and Rahul dropped down to 4 or replaced by Dinesh Karthik, as Rahul still seems to be a bottler in crunch games despite the odd innings where he looks 'classy' or whatever it is that his diehard supporters find attractive.

Lack of momentum at the start is killing us. Both Kohli and Rohit are traditional batsmen who place safe cricket shots at least at the start and use up some balls to get set. Somebody like Dhawan is thus priceless in that top 3, as he keeps the scoreboard ticking by playing unconventional shots. Had Dhawan played yesterday's game, and even gotten a 40, we would have won.

People were doing such rhona dhona against VS, they got their wish now. Now that RP is in the eleven, they are not happy with him either. Now please start your rhona dhona against him. And KL Rahul too. One failure is all it needs for people to bring the daggers out. People want DK. DK has been a failure for so long, he is lucky to be even in the 14. VS was our best number 4.

VS was indeed the best choice for 4, the clamour for Pant notwithstanding. There have been no real replacements for Raina and Yuvraj since they were phased out. The next best was Rayadu (bad fielder and not the fittest but good at working the gaps, pickup up singles and slogging when needed) and he should have come in as replacement ahead of Pant (who has been found lacking in the mindset needed to build good ODI innings - hope he proves me wrong in this WC).

Agarwal though, is a good choice as the opening slot is probably a bigger problem area for us than the middle order, and we couldn't afford to depend on Rahul at that position.

Pant is more of a long-term option for India and not the best selection for this WC - he needs plenty of games and exposure to establish himself, much like he did after getting an extended run in tests.

Time to lungi-shiver. SL hit 338 and defended against Windies. Why was Angelo Matthews not bowling past 2 years? Anyway he is now... Then again, Malinga has been livin' the good life, evidently, though is pace is as fierce as ever.
