Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
Interestingly India currently hold the following titles in hockey:
Senior Men
2014 Asian Games
2017 Asia Cup
2017 Asian Champions Trophy
Junior Men
2015 Junior Asia Cup
2016 Junior World Cup
Senior Women
2016 Asian Champions Trophy
2017 Asia Cup
Essentially we dominate the continental and world scene at men's junior level, and hold every single continental senior men's title right now. The senior women's team holds all continental titles except Asian Games (bronze in 2014).

Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
This is very impressive for our girls.
I cover lot of school & college sports in massa, and here only girls play hockey and its called field hockey. But the thing to note is even county level schools (govt run free public schools, I guess you can equate it to municipality run schools in desh) have a team which plays hockey competitively with other schools in county and at the end of season (roughly 2.5 months) there are playoffs among county and then at state level and subsequently nationally. Same deal with expensive high-end private and catholic schools. Once the season is done the same set of girls play another sport for example basketball in winter and lacrosse in spring. So this girls are very competitive all year round, and land college scholarships to make a professional career out of it. In summer vacation there are multitude of camps and coaching classes run by professional world class ex-players and coaches coaching this girls to further hone their skills.
To my knowledge we do not have any such setup in India for sports other than Keercat, and yet our girls rank in top 10 is indeed very impressive. Salaam and pranams to our athletic sistas.

If this Global consultants to monitor progress of sports professionals implemented as intended than Indian sport will definitely reach new height.

-AnkitSignalling a massive shake-up in the way sports is administered in India, Sports Minister and Olympic silver winner Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore told The Indian Express on Friday that his ministry is in the process of drafting professionals to monitor top sportspersons and, “in a way, privatise” the machinery.
The ministry’s plan also includes the setting up of a 24×7, 365-day control room where the athletes’ performance will be monitored by professionals, including high performance managers. Rathore said the ministry will soon launch a Request for Proposal (RfP) to hire international consultants for recruiting professionals to execute the flagship Target Olympic Podium and Khelo India programmes.
The professionals will be given financial autonomy to reduce the red-tapism that has been criticised by several athletes, said Rathore, who is the first international-level sportsperson to become Sports Minister.
“We are hiring high performance managers, who could be from outside the country as well. We are hiring CEOs, who will take care of administration, logistics and everything else. They will specifically look at the teams that will compete at the continental games and cater to them. So the red-tapism is out,” Rathore said.
“There will be a 24×7, 365 days control room where the athletes’ performance is constantly monitored by these professionals. We will give them the funds, so there is no bureaucracy,” he said, adding that the ministry will soon have a new office, Khel Bhavan, to house all officials and the control room. The plan is based on recommendations from the Olympic Task Force set up by the Prime Minister, he said.
At present, these tasks are carried out by the government officials who are deputed with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Sports Ministry. That trend is likely to end, with Rathore saying that the ministry will hire professionals and researchers for its 15 priority sports.
The Sports Minister said that the professional administrators will be paid the same remuneration as foreign coaches. “Those (foreign coaches) who are getting picked are getting $15,000 (monthly) and those who are picking (administrators) are stuck in the old system of bureaucracy. This has to change. We will pay them the market rate. The mindset needs to change… If our skill trainers are important and are being paid as much as foreign coaches, the logistics and administration officials are equally important.”
SAI officials will be made in charge of managing stadiums and centres of excellence, apart from communicating with various federations. “The SAI has to be made extremely professional. The project officers have been there for years. Some are still energetic. But the energy levels have to be same as that of an athlete. We need to match that,” Rathore said.
“The mandate needs to be very clear. Overall, SAI will look after excellence and managing stadiums. Elite athletes will be in contact with the professional team, which we are putting in place now,” he said. Rathore said that the ministry is also set to launch the National School Games in January, which will be conducted on par with the Asian Games.
Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
Indian football is taking deep roots. Now we have a four tier system. At the top is ISL. Format has been changed to minimum 5 Indian players on field, 10 teams, 5 month competition. Below that is the I-league which is going to run concurrently with 10 teams. Below that is the I-league second division. Format has been changed to no foreign players and only 3 above 23 years Indian players. Below that is the state level competitions which will feed into the second division.

Mirabai Chanu wins gold at World Weightlifting Championships.
-AnkitSaikhom Mirabai Chanu has lifted a new world record of 194kg - 85kg snatch and 109kg clean-and-jerk - to lift gold at the World Weightlifting Championships, becoming only the second Indian weightlifter after Karnam Malleswari to achieve that feat.
Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
Congrats to Mirabai Chanu, our new world weightlifting champion! I hope she carries her success to Tokyo 2020.
She won the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship 2 months ago. Her performance was absolutely hilarious. She 'only' lifted 189kg total instead of her world championship winning 194 kg (which would have gotten her a silver in Rio 2016 too). But the others are SO far behind it's ridiculous:

Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
India lost 2-3 to England in WHL. Inconsistent performance. Unless they can beat Germany next they are likely to meet Belgium in QF who are in red hot form and who knocked India out in Olympics.
Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
According to the news, against Australia , we demonstrated a fabulous new short passing game, with precise passes made quickly, and no one holding the ball more than a few seconds. However, against England, despite the same game plan, multiple players lapsed back to the old style of holding the ball too long and hitting a defense wall. It's entirely the fault of the players for not following the plan they themselves agreed to, and even demonstrated so well in the previous game. They can actually scare the top 4 if they play that tactic effectively, but it requires discipline to avoid going to their comfortable old ways.
Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
Currently we are losing to Germany by 2 goals.
Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
All the teams make the quarterfinal anyway. Since we're trending at the bottom of the group, we'll face the top team in group A, probably Belgium.
Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
Change of coach has not been good for India.
Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
Its clear its not the coach’s fault . Oltmans tried to make them do exactly what they successfully did in the game against Australia . But since then the team hasn’t shown the discipline needed , instead doing back to their old game other teams m me how to stop . See the interview with the skipper after the England match - he readily admits they didn’t follow a pre agreed upon game plan .
Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
which brings us to the question. Is it possible for them to play the European game?
Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
What is ‘the European game’ ?
They just need a winning game plan , whatever it’s name . Did you see the India Australia game ? Our passing speed and coordination was stunning .

Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
Yes, although conversion was poor. But we have been trying the European style of hockey for 20-30 years with little success except under Oltman we moved upto 6th position. But I am not sure if their brains are wired for that style to do it consistently. I think they grow up playing Indian style and then are asked to switch in the national side and they are not able to do it consistently. I am impressed by how they played the junior world cup. Indian style with speed, accuracy and stamina. Although it is lower level of competition I am wondering if the senior side should revert back to that style.
Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
I did not see any problem with their ability to play fast passing game against Australia. It was unpolished at finishing, sure. But they played well enough that the reigning world champion, who usually thrashes us by several goals, looked bewildered. We held most of possession, and would have won but for a breakdown in defending that one PC. Australia typically manages multiple FGs a game against us, and this time they had far fewer shots on goal than us. Our own goal was a superb piece of coordination among multiple players who left the entire Aussie defense flatfooted.
The players themselves admitted that against UK they intended to play to plan but were indisciplined, especially senior folks like SV Sunil who are used to playing their way.
Marijne is doing the right thing - he brought in the young players who can be coached in the new style more easily. It'll take time. People should stop trying to shoot the coach the moment the team's not doing well. This is effectively a U23 squad, comprised mostly of the junior world champion side.

India beat Belgium 3-2 in shootout to enter semi-finals
For the first time in the tournament, everything fell well for India. They had the lead. They let Belgium into the match. It was 3-3. Then in the shoot out it was 2-2. And then Akash Chikte made it 1-0 for India when he saved.

Re: Indian Sports and Entertainment Industry
Amazing performance!!! Belgium is currently world #2 and the most dangerous team in the world.
We now play the winner of England-Argentina. Both teams are more beatable than Belgium. Argentina are Olympic champions, but they're been rusty since then.
What's also heartening is that we played the fast passing game again, after not following the plan properly against England and Germany. Both times we played that plan - against Australia and Belgium, it has paid dividends, enabling us to keep up with what are vastly better teams on paper.
