However, Nobbs agreed that a shift from nine-a-side to regular hockey would be difficult. "There will be a culture shock. In nine-a-side, you attack at full pace for the full game but don't worry too much about defence. And then we have to go worrying about real hockey. We found that once the guys have played nine-a-side, they want to continue playing that even with 11 on the field," he said.

So the running game patronized by the likes of argentina, spain, germany, korea, australia, etc. gets an official look-in. 9-a side, increased goal post, what will the score be like: 20-18

As expected, India coach CR Kumar was elated with the series-levelling victory. "This is the finest victory of my team since I took over in April this year. I give credit to the entire defence and midfield for the win," he said. "Even, I felt if not for the missed chances we could won the match with a bigger margin," Kumar added.

Defence, defence, defence, doh, hit my head when defence wakes up. 5-4 against Nz and 1-4 against the assies. Too many holes in the defence and too easy for the kiwis to hit back from 0-3 down. Now onto T-20 of hickey, the lanco 9-a-sider, as if hickey these days was a test level siesta. Given that the kiwis are far above us in the rankings and given that they have hardly ever beat us in the last 20 years, one wonders how the fih can be toyed with to build rankings. India's problem lies with the fact that we fck up in key moments of big events like asia cup, asian games that will lead to an auto berth in OG, OG, world cup etc. Truly suud afrikan proportions... The last AG we won the bronze, in 88 or 92, we would have lied flat and cried home on how the auto berth was lost. Or worse, written an autobiography on how amma should nt cry for me.

Politics of ihf-hi-ioa-msya-fih maya, dont wake me up even when my bladder has to burst.

The u-18 team for Johor tournament is announced. Again, stacked fully with Punjabi players. Looks exactly like the team that had its backside handed back in the last asia cup event. Yuvraj Walmiki's brother, Devender Walmiki, makes it to the team. Can see two players from the tribal belt. People like Yuvraj Walmiki or Diwakar Ram have to climb despite the administrative biases and shady selection policies.

What is wrong with hickey in India?

Zimple onleee. In order of priority...
1) Oiseaulish idiots who run the game and more so play their own game in running the game,
2) gullible players who buy the oiseaulish idiots' uvacha all the time, and
3) gullible maakis like me who keep following this show of gulli-bilitis as if there is no tomorrow and no life at home.

In short, if hickey has to imbrove, we need a color revolution and regime change in the administrative apparatus and cutting across partylines, all the idiots need to put through the pulp machine till their lobotomized backsides never come back ever again with cries of "we can run this game better." Once these idiots are thrown out, the gullible players need an educashun, not to read aye-bee-see-dee-ongg-appan-dhaadee, but to really figure out the chaff from the wheat. If these two happen, surely, we will have the imbroved hickey we all seek for.

On gulli-bilitis: this 9-a-sider, you take a game which is already skewed up for mega-running skills, make it even more run-a-thon-ish, and sell it to the Indians as if its the next best thing after dog-poo-of-the-other-world. 3-6, 1-1, 1-4, thats the score-card for the men's side and with malaysians being the only wimmens team, India-ass final was not a big deal anyway. When RicC sells it to the dog-poo believers that this 9-a-soda is made for subcontinental hickey and dog-poo believers believe the same uvacha and diss at Indian administrators as if RicC is the god, well, you got your Exhibit A+1. Thankfully, the coverage in India is nobbs driven rather than toilet driven...

Exhibit B: the official sponsor of this 9-a-sider is lanco group, a desi company based out of India and operating on mnc credentials. 99% of the key execs of this group are desi: http://www.lancogroup.com/DynTestform.aspx?pageid=5. Yet this company has found it so necessary to sponsor an event in oz, while I have never seen them do a single sponsorship in India. Sure, this must be another one of those uvacha events to keep their mining benefactors in perth and western ass-tralia happy, but what exactly are their contributions to Indian hickey? None to my best knowledge. If those in hydra-bad can pass a big fart when they pass by the lanco hills area, and say "satan asked for it," I will be thankful to them.

India’s Boxing Revolution
There were no sports journalists to see them off on their way to Azerbaijan. Nor was there a single OB van present to cover the send-off. And when our boxers in Baku set about knocking their better-fancied opponents out of the reckoning on their way to Olympic qualification, there were no ‘breaking news’ headlines on Indian news channels, which were more intent on reporting ho-hum outcomes of the T20 Champions League.

India’s boxing revolution so far, we must acknowledge, has mostly been a silent one. With as many as four Indian boxers already qualifying for the London Olympics next year, and with many others waiting for their opportunity in the next round of qualifiers, it wouldn’t be a far cry to expect more than the single medal won for boxing at Beijing by Vijender Singh. Only Russia and Ukraine secured more Olympic slots at Baku (five each), while the traditional boxing powerhouse Cuba equalled India’s performance, with four boxers qualifying for the 2012 games at the world boxing championships.

As of now, India has a real chance of qualifying in all 10 weight categories at the 2012 games, a first in the history of Indian boxing. With our women led by Mary Kom also looking potent, India’s might be a rare contingent with more than 10 boxers raring to hop into the ring there.
It was the Bhiwani Boxing Club, hardly a modern facility itself, that ultimately made the difference. The club, in much better shape today, was once described in The Indian Express thus: ‘Tucked in a corner, almost hidden by fields, the yellow brick building is more a farm outhouse than a possible breeding centre for international sportspersons… The Bhiwani Boxing Club is just that, two rooms and a shed.’

Lack of infrastructure, however, can be more than compensated for by a passion for boxing, backed by discipline and dedication. Many of Bhiwani’s boxers came from remote and long-neglected parts of India, where training facilities and coaching either do not exist or are not worth their name; India’s sports administrators paid them no attention, but Jagdish Singh certainly did. Akhil Kumar and Vijender Singh just happen to be his two most famous trainees.

Physique of country population is much better than in cities. The reason is availability of good nutrition (fresh milk, eggs, vegetables, pulses) . Country folks are also freer from stress of studies for "career building". If sports is taken as a 100% business venture i.e. GOI outsources its sports department to private organization on the promise that in x number of years x medals must be won (now that professional players are also allowed to participate in olympics).

In India the government is the real hurdle in sports empowerment. Sports worldwide is a several trillion dollars industry and India's share in this pie must be increased (cricket not withstanding)., there are several sports in which Indians can excel. If we group sports into two categories

1. Individual (Boxing, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Shooting, Badminton, Tennis)
2. Team (hockey, kabaddi, cricket, etc)

It is much easier to identify and train the individual athletes than build a team. i.e. spending money on individual athletes than money is always a better option.

Most definitely untrue. The government has hardly been a hurdle in terms of running hickey, yet hickey administration in India is ridiculous. In fact, the government (Ministry of Youth and sports affairs) just wants one federation, yet the different power wielders such as what makes IHF (KPS Gill, sahara parivar and co) and HI (Narinder batra and co) have been doing a tug of war on controlling the apparatus. When the govt asked how can a 80+ year old can administer a game and asked for age-ceiling at 70 or thereabouts, there was much muck from the International olympic council on how the MSYA is interfering in the running of sports in India (autonomous bodies) and how India can be banned from the olympics for this effort. If Ajay Maken's full Bill passes through both houses of the parliament, a good chance that India will be banned from Londonistan games. So be it, I would rather see accountability and age caps for selected people than seeing 3-4 golds in the 2012 games.

The IOC wants a governmental financial/security guarantee to host a games, as was seen in the CWG and AG (even though they are all under the diktats of different bodies such OCA and CWGF, both of which in some broad measure report to IOC). Yet the government cannot intervene when ridiculous people such as Vidya Stokes (all of 83 years then) wanted to run HI. That is called nepotism and protection for their stooges under the garb of autonomy. The often thrown muck at the government is that the PM is all of 80+, so why cant Vidya be 84? The ridiculousness of this comparison is that the PM and the government is elected (independent of how much you may feel about MMS' non-election issue and RS membership) whereas Vidya and cohorts elect themselves by being the power wielders in the game.

The same holds true in every other sport, including crikkit. The MSYA budget is minimal and is spread across multiple sports, industrialists dont pick the tag and all are crowded at crikkit advertising, there are hardly any awards other than arjuna and khel ratna (and dronacharya for coaches) to aspire for, even private ventures such as OGQ etc. all crowd at the elite athletes and dont trickle down, etc. Which is what makes people* such as Shivraj Singh Chauhan who is a major hickey buff or Jayalalitha who is an across-the-board sports buff (independent of her fatso-ness) a blessing in disguise. In this light, if the govt bequeaths its responsibility, there is going to be little sporting talent and ground facilities in much of rural India, whatever little there are. SAI wont run, NADA wont run, people will dope rampantly and get caught everywhere not like they dont now, and we will have sporting anarchy. Less control for the govt is an amriki-vaadi propaganda after some measure of progress has been achieved, does nt work in Indian conditions. Even in china, its a command and control sporting architecture right from the top layers of PLA commandi-bule. Same was true in east germany, same is true even today in much of europe. In India, if the GoI ignores and walks off, there will be chaos, anarchy, and disquietude which will end up as social rebellion. That holds true across multiple spheres, not just with sports. We should wish for things that will bring us light, not total darkness...

* If people such as MS Gill or Mani Shankar aiyar were to run India, we will all be bestowed with stalinist visions of sports for propagandoo onlee. But that is an aside.

KA writes on the hickey team:
India has scoring ability. However, while it goes on top gear to score, it does not have much in its arsenal to plug the holes in the defense so as to safeguard the goals scored so painstakingly.
That pretty much sums up the team for me. Sandeep is injured. Sardara often plays a lone-ranger role. Lo and behold, Sardara is out of form or the gap is aplenty, India will concede quick counterattack goals. Add some tension and expectation, the team folds like it did to Oz in the CW finals. Everyone wants to be a goal-scorer, where are the goal-preventers? This explains why Sandeep and Sardara were back in double quick time after that implosion in the training camp. Like the crikkit team needs fast bowlers, the hickey team needs more defenders, much more badly than the crikkit team.

So in 20 acres they are developing (opposite of the PCA cricket stadium in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, Mohali)
1. Swimming pool
2. Football ground.
3. Hockey ground with blue astroturf.
4. Gymnasium.
5. Badminton.
6. Wrestling and Judo.
7. Tennis
8. 8 lane all weather Synthetic track for sprinters

is it all possible in 20 acres? how about other things like Parking space, etc? The area where they are trying to develop this sports complex is less than 2KMs from following other important places.

1. Fortis Hospital (private big hospital catering to people from all over Punjab, Haryana, Himachal).
2. Punjab School education board.
3. National institute of Pharmaceutical and educational research.
4. Central Jail
5. Mohali City Center is about 3 KMs away.
and many other places. Why can't they move it to a better place?

Mohali sports complex set for a revamp
Abhijit Prashar May 30, 2011, 06.36am IST

MOHALI: Having been neglected for years, the Mohali sports complex, in Phase-IX opposite PCA stadium, is set to be completely revamped with an estimated investment of over Rs 100 crore. The complex would have state-of-the-art stadiums for various sports including hockey and football, besides a world-class swimming pool and gymnasium.

The 20-acre site for the sports complex, which had been gathering dustfor the past 20 years, has recently seen a flurry of activity, with construction work going on in full swing at the site. Officials claim that most of the facilities to be provided at the sports complex would be ready by the end of the year and the rest of the facilities would come up by mid-2012.

The infrastructure proposed to come up in the modern sports complex includes a multipurpose gymnasium of international standards. There will also be provision for courts for basketball, volleyball, badminton, besides facilities for wrestling, judo, and table tennis.

The sports complex would also house a hockey ground equipped with blue synthetic turf, along with a VIP pavilion and a seating capacity for around 4000 spectators. It is expected to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 10 crore. The blue synthetic turf would allow better grip on the surface and would also be comparatively better in soaking water as compared to the conventional green turf.

An international standard swimming pool with warm-up facilties and diving pools is also proposed to be constructed with a provision for a filtration plant, changing rooms, toilets, sauna, steam bath and storage space at an estimated cost of Rs 10 crore.

An eight-lane synthetic athletics track along with a football ground is also proposed at an estimated cost of Rs 50 crore. The synthetic track would be an all-weather facility, while the football ground would have grass that is suitable for modern footballers.

The new complex would also have an administrative block to house the directorate of sports, which is presently functioning from a hired accommodation in Sector 34 in Chandigarh

That hockey ground with blue turf and pink outside strip is the recent innovation of fihickey idiots. They keep changing the system so as to keep the infra-slow people on tenterhooks. Londonistan games will be played on blue turf, organizers say this will enhance the visual range for spectators. God....

Punjab, Nov 4 (TruthDive): It is the second edition of Kabaddi World Cup in which 14 teams from Canada, Australia, UK, Afghanistan, Germany, Nepal, Pakistan, USA, Italy, Argentina, Norway, Spain, Sri Lanka and host India are participating in the tournament.

The teams would vie for the Rs.2 crore cup prize. The teams finishing second and third will get prize money of Rs.1 crore and Rs.51 lakh. All participating teams will get a reward of Rs.10 lakh each, Badal told reporters here. The first edition of the cup was held last year.

“Our effort is to give a boost to this traditional game and attract youth towards it. While matches will be played at floodlit stadiums in towns, some of them will be in rural areas of Punjab,” Badal said. He said all arrangements have been made for strict compliance of World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) guidelines to prevent misuse of performance enhancing drugs by participating players.

“We will set high standards in conducting the mega event. Efforts have been made to provide all comforts to the participating teams and officials accompanying,” Punjab sports director and cup organizing Secretary Pargat Singh said.

AMAR
In the 'Amar' form of Kabaddi, whenever any player is touched (out), he does not go out of the court, but stays inside, and one point is awarded to the team that touched him. This game is also played on a time basis, i.e. the time is fixed. This form of kabaddi is played in Punjab, Canada, England, New Zealand, USA, Pakistan and Australia. In the Amar form of Kabaddi, each team consists of 5–6 stoppers and 4–5 raiders. At one time, only 4 stoppers are allowed to play on the field. Every time a stopper stops the raider from going back to his starting point, that stoppers team gets 1 point. On the other hand, every time the raider tags one of the stoppers and returns to his starting point, his team gets one point. At one time, only one of the stoppers can try.

Sanjeevni

In Sanjeevni Kabaddi, one player is revived against one player of the opposite team who is out, one out, one in. The duration, the number of players, dimensions of the court, etc. have been fixed by the Kabaddi Federation of India. This form of Kabaddi is the closest to the present game. In this form of Kabaddi, players are put out and revived and the game lasts 40 minutes with a 5-minute break in between. There are nine players on each side. The team that puts out all the players on the opponent's side scores four extra points for a 'Iona'. The winning team is the one that scores most points after 40 minutes. The field is bigger in this form of Kabaddi and the 'cant' different in various regions. Modern Kabaddi resembles this form of Kabaddi especially with regard to 'out & revival system' and 'Iona'. The present form of Kabaddi is a synthesis of all these forms with changes in the rules.[2][3]

Gaminee

This is played with nine players on either side, in a field of no specific measurements. The characteristic is that a player put out has to remain out until all his team members are out. The team that is successful in putting out all the players of the opponent's side secures a point. This is akin to the present system of 'Iona'. After all the players are put out, the team is revived and the game continues. The game continues until five or seven 'Iona' are secured. This form of Kabaddi has no fixed game time. The main disadvantage of Gaminee is that the player is not in position to give his best performance since he is likely to remain out for the better part of the match until an Iona is scored.[2][3]

Kabaddi now grabs Ropar
Deepankar Sharda
Tribune News Service

Roopnagar, November 5
There is a saying, ‘Old is Gold’, and that seems to motivate Punjab’s masses these days, as they turn up in large number to witness 2nd Kabaddi World Cup at various cities of Punjab.

At Nehru Stadium, Ropar, people turned up in huge numbers and the scenario was the same as that of the World Cup cricket match between Pakistan and India at Mohali. The stadium was full to capacity to cheer the teams of the desi game and watch their favourite raiders holding their opponents.

“As I do not want to miss even a single moment of the US and Pakistan players, I came early to book my seat, said Harsimran, who owns a grocery shop in town. “After the US defeated last year’s runners- up, they became my favourites. I asked my brother to attend practice session at a nearby village. I want him to play this game and become strong like these players.”

The craze was such that the spectators thronged into the stadium three hours before the first match. They were finding it hard to get seats in the general block while the VIP block also witnessed many tussles for seats.

“It is for the first time that kids are watching kabaddi match live here,” said Gurkirat Singh, a teacher in a Government school here.

According to local residents, for the first time they have seen the stadium jam packed. “The stadium was not that live before this day,” says Kuldeep Singh, General-Secretary of the District Kabaddi Association. “Kabaddi matches do take place in the nearby areas of Chamkur Sahib but it is for the first time that it is being organised here. I hope the tournament will boost the confidence of the youngsters and they will also opt for this sport to shine.”

“The response of the public says it all,” says Pargat Singh, Director Sports, Punjab. “This is the best way to promote the game among youngsters and it also takes the others back to their childhood.”

Good to see the enthusiasm. Kabaddi definitely has the potential to become an Olympic game. But I hope that it remains the game of the ground and does not get hijacked like Hockey which is now played on Astro turf!

By the way, it will be interesting to see whether the nucleus of teams like US and Canada comprises of desi or native players.

Interesting...looks like Sanjeevni must have taken hold quite some time back since that is the only form I heard off or played. In school championships - which would certainly be tied to the formal rules from KFI - we played this form of course.

Kabaddi World Cup players test positive for banned steroids in India
Seven players at the Kabaddi World Cup in India have tested positive for banned steroids.
...
including one American, had been provisionally suspended and withdrawn from the championship. Two of the players are from Australia and one each from Germany, Canada, Spain and Argentina.

NADA had already caught 20 players for doping during an Indian kabaddi camp before the World Cup. ...
Who knew that doping was so prevalent in this sport as well

Cricket - 176 million
Football - 155 million
Wrestling - 120 million
Car/Bike racing - 118 million
Tennis - 95 million
Hickey - 91 million
Golf - 76 million
According to a report published by TAM Sports, Football, Wrestling, Racing, Tennis and Hockey were the five most watched non-cricket sports in India in 2010. The data made available by TAM Media Research indicates that Cricket is the most watched sport in India, with a reach of 176 million viewers in 2010. Hockey gained the 5th non-cricket viewership spot for 2010 on the strength of just 2 events - the 2010 Hero Honda World Cup and the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. The numbers for hockey would certainly be higher if more than just 2 events were shown live in India in 2010. Another point to note is that for 4 of the top 5 non-cricket sports (Football, Wrestling, Racing, Tennis), India has minimal to no presence in the world rankings, and what is being shown on Indian television is foreign teams playing on foreign shores.

I'm surprised to see wrestling there.

Speaking of which, we're got some good wrestlers and boxers yet we don't have any major domestic tournaments in modern wrestling and boxing, unless i am mistaken.

From what I've seen of sports tv, most of ESPN/Star/Star Cricket is cricket, then British football, and then Golf. The fillers are American sports. The Zee Sports/Ten Sports is a mixed bag, DD Sports plays only the CWG and National Games these days and reruns of old European sports shows. The Neo group is all about cricket, but do play domestic cricket sometimes.

I love Indian golf, and given the huge representation we have on the Asian Tour and the European Tour, we should have more domestic tournys.

India enter Kabaddi World Cup semis
Hosts India stormed into the semifinals of the ongoing Kabaddi World Cup with an easy 51-24 victory over Canada at Doda on Thursday.

By virtue of this win, India also became the first team in the tournament to have registered victories in all five matches played so far.

I clicked on the link above to watch the Kabaddi matches..and am sorry to say, it was boring. There are 4 to a side, and only one person can hold the raider. Most of the time the raider got back with a point...and, the Germany, Oz teams were full of Desis (all had the name Singh as the last name) :). Are these club teams?

Even though the Johor u-21 hickey tournament is shaping up, I have some mixed feelings about the constitution of the u-21 team given that its stacked with players from Punjab. Just as in the previous junior asia cup. Nevertheless, India gets to face Malaysia and a win will fetch the team a spot in the finals with oz barring a few calamitous events such as a SK win with massive goal difference etc... Two stars have emerged Garjinder Singh in the fwd line, Harmanpreet Singh under the bar. Sadly, Garjinder wont play the Malaysia match due to injuries. Hope our lads put it across the team of Muhd Dharmaraj Abdullah (yes, thats the name of the coach of the malay team). I have no love for the malays or the chinis who want to start a dhaaga under some lovey-doveyness overflow. Anyway... All that said, Devender Walmiki (brother of Yuvraj, the new star of Bombay hickey) is the el-capitan. No guarantees that all these players will end up famous with the senior team given the vagaries that are Indian hickey.

Rohan and aisam are now in the season-ending doubles event, so are lee-hesh. You know who I will be crowing for, definitely not the team that saw Hardeep Suri leave his job aside and come see.

Boxing goes where hickey has nt yet, or rather, has and then cre-ed:
Mumbai Fighters line-up — Bantamweight: Jitender Kumar, Balbir Singh, Gaurav Bidhuri, Vipin Kumar; Lightweight: Akhil Kumar, Diwakar Prasad, Siddharth Varma; Middleweight: Patrick Gallagher (Ireland), Mandeep Jangra, Vijay Hooda; Light Heavyweight: Marko Calic (Croatia), Jasveer Singh, Rahul Kumar; Heavyweight: Paul Koon (U.S.), Trent Rawlins (Australia), Krishan Kumar, Sumit Rangi.

Sum, its one year early, I know, I will put a 101$ bet (on something you choose for) if India does nt win at least 1 gold in boxing in the londonistan games assuming of course that the games and boxing events do happen :). And our gold count is at least 2 at the end of the games :). And the other gold is definitely not coming from the prima donna I like to hate. So thats three bets, a small technicality, but anyway...

Betting on both from boxing actually, one from mary kom and another from one of the bhiwani boys. Shooting is possible, but not from abhinav bindra, may be from the guy who missed out last time due to quota-shota nonsense. Hopefully bindra does nt try to outdo rathore saab. Tennis is a long shot, and as much as I want to bet my life on our hickey team, I will do that once they are past the dilli qualifiers and dont pull a santiago on me. Assuming that it is in dilli in the final fih count and not pushed to brussels, which is more likely.

The wrestling referred to in that survey is probably WWE not real wrestling.
