India Gate lawns will turn sporting arena for C'wealth Games
The palaces of erstwhile princely states like Hyderabad House, Bikaner House and Baroda House around the C-Hexagon at the India Gate shall form the panoramic backdrop for the event. The proposed venue, the infrastructure of which is estimated to cost about Rs 30 crore, will be purely temporary and the structure will be pulled down after the event with ground restored to its original condition.
AFAIK, this will be the first time India will have such a big infrastructure made up of temporary materials.

Debate continues over outsourcing of broadcasting for Commonwealth Games
NEW DELHI: Describing the protests by Prasar Bharati employees against the decision of Chief Executive Officer B S Lalli to go in for global tenders for coverage of the Commonwealth Games as ‘misplaced’, highly-placed sources in DD Sports told indiantelevision.com that outsourcing by the host broadcaster for live coverage of international sporting events was a normal practice since one broadcaster could not be expected to have expertise in covering all events.

It was pointed out that during the Olympics in China, the host broadcaster had covered only two sporting disciplines and all the others were outsourced. However, the supervisory control will be with the host broadcaster.

Furthermore, this had not been done merely because Prasar Bharati was unlikely to acquire technology for High Definition Television that is needed in most recipient countries. The sources said it was an economically sound decision as a large part of the equipment or Out Broadcasting Vans that will need to be acquired for the Games will become useless later. For example, each HDTV van costs around Rs 300 to Rs 350 million and India could not afford such expenses. Similarly, some events require OB vans having the capacity for ten or more cameras (just as cricket requires up to 16 cameras), and would lie unused after the Games.

Leaders of the National Federation of Akashvani and Doordarshan Employees said the employees of All India and DD would boycott the transmission of coverage of the Commonwealth Game 2010 if the production and coverage is handed over to private parties and not to the professionals of Doordarshan. Such invitation of interest by Prasar Bharati through global tender will benefit the foreign media houses.

Cough Cough....Prasar Bharti could not manage to go onto HD in spite of having bought 14 months time...they are to blame and it seems an economically viable reason not to invest in infra which does not have a feasible life after the CWG.

HDTV broadcasting in India is in nascent stage. It requires HD content, HD capable network and HD television sets making it an expensive deal overall. During and past Asian Games colour television also started to gain momentum throughout India. Getting transformed to HDTV significantly is going to take 4-5 years still, though CWG will provide the boost I guess.

Explain so without the whining. Seems like its a national trend to blame Delhi for every other city's problems.
Should the government suspend all further development for CWG now considering Delhi has seen enough investment already?

Delhi Metro to take you to Commonwealth Games venues
The Phase-II of the Delhi Metro will provide easy Metro connectivity to 10 of the 11 venues of the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
"The DMRC will ensure that nine out of the 10 venues where the Games are to be held, besides the Games Village itself, are within two kms from a Metro station," Delhi Metro spokesperson Anuj Dayal told PTI.
I hope things are planned with long vision and not just CWG in mind.

Spending my weekend wisely...

MCD to Install Bomb Proof Bins for 2010 CWG
Each bin will cost the corporation Rs 50,000

Believe it or not, if there ever is another bomb blast in Delhi, the safest installations will be, hold your breath, the MCD dustbins. After all, the civic agency proposes to install bomb-proof dustbins in the city in time for Commonwealth Games 2010. And each of these super bins will cost a cool Rs 50,000.

Said Mayor Dr Kanwar Sain: ‘‘since it is our responsibility to install dustbins, we do not want to leave anything to chance, especially with the Commonwealth Games round the corner. Dustbins are usually a neglected lot. Last year, bombs were planted in the bins, leading to widespread damage.’’ Each of the mega-expensive dustbins will be of 1,000-litre capacity. Added Sain: ‘‘A UK-based company has made a presentation before us and we will study the proposal by testing the dustbins and start with a pilot project.’’

The MCD claims that it wants to install these bomb-proof dustbins around sensitive buildings like stadiums, the Games Village and multi-level parking lots.

Elaborating on the benefits of the unique trash cans, Sain said: ‘‘This Company is certified by the UK government and similar dustbins are being used there. The company has also installed 50 such dustbins in Assam under a pilot project initiated there. These dustbins will be made of bullet-proof material and will not be damaged during bomb blasts.’’

The MCD had earlier proposed installing dustbin-cum-flower pots to deal with problems of littering and aesthetics. While describing the same, the MCD had said the bins would look like flower vases. What it meant was that flower pots would be placed on top of dustbins which would be open from the front to throw garbage in.

Less then a year to go now...

TOI takes looks at Indian teams preparation.
WRESTLING

India is one of the strongest teams among Commonwealth countries in wrestling with challenges likely to come from Canada and Nigeria in some weight categories. Preparatory camps are being held simultaneously at NIS, Patiala, and the SAI centre in Sonepat. The top four wrestlers from last year's national championships have been selected from each weight category in the men's and women's sections and are undergoing systematic training at the camps. The teams have been taking part in international meets as well as Grand Prix events.
Coaches: Men's freestyle: Jagminder, Men's Greco-Roman: Har Govind, Women: PR Sondhi.
Past Record: India had a rich haul at the 2002 Manchester Games, winning three gold and three silver. Wrestling didn't feature in the 2006 Melbourne Games.
Build-up: Commonwealth Championships in December and the Asian Championships in Delhi in May next year.
Possible Medal count: About 10 medals.

TABLE TENNIS

China might not be a part of the Commonwealth group of nations, but paddlers of Chinese-origin play for teams like Singapore, Australia, Canada and Scotland. India's Italian coach Massimo Constantini feels the team should train in China as much as possible to stand a chance against the superpowers. "Even their provincial players are so good. The Chinese have a lot of variety in their play and if our players can get to spar with them regularly, it'll help us prepare better for the Games," says Constantini, who will be accompanying the players to Zhengding, China, for a 15-day training camp later this month. Meanwhile, the Indian team has begun its preparations for the Games with regular camps in Pune, Patiala and Ajmer. As of now there are 37 core probables (20 men and 17 women), but Constantini wants to reduce the number to 24 next January.
Coach: Massimo Constantini (Italy), Bhawani Mukherjee (SAI).
Past record (medals): Melbourne 2006: Achanta Sharath Kamal (gold, men's singles); gold, men's team; bronze, women's team. Manchester (England) 2002: 3 bronze (men's singles, men's doubles and men's team).
Upcoming events: Training camp in Zhengding, China (Oct 11-28); English Open (Oct 28-Nov 1); Asian Championship, Lucknow (Nov 16-22); 2010 calendar hasn't been decided.
Possible medal count: 4-5 medals. "Sharath (Kamal) and Subhajit (Saha) are expected to get us medals and I'm confident of winning in the women's team event also. We could do well in the women's singles and mixed doubles events too," says Constantini.

HOCKEY

The women's hockey team reached new heights with gold medal in the 2002 Games, but all along it has been a struggle for the men's team. This time, Jose Brasa's men are preparing in right earnest to make it count. The team, after a long camp, is off to Canada for a seven-Test series. They have a busy calendar in the run-up to the event. The women, on the other hand, are busy honing their skills in Bhopal. Their crucial test will come in the Asia Cup in Bangkok later this year.
Coach: Jose Brasa (men), MK Kaushik (women).
Last 2 Games: Manchester: Gold (women), Melbourne: Silver (women).
Medal expected: 2.
Men's calendar: A four-nation invitational tournament, World Cup in March, proposed tour of Europe, Azlan Shah Cup.
Women's calendar: Asia Cup in Bangkok.

ATHLETICS

Indian athletes have not had much to boast of as far as the Commonwealth Games are concerned, with the country bagging just five medals so far in track and field events since 1978, when the first Games were held. This time, the hosts are hoping for a turnaround in their fortunes. Athletics Federation of India (AFI) officials insist the preparations are on the right track and India could win "six to eight" medals at home. At present 200 athletes are training in three SAI centres -- in Kolkata, Bangalore and Patiala. India is hoping to win medals in discus, shot put, relay races and triple jump.
Last Two Games: Manchester: 0-1-1; Melbourne: 0-2-0.
Upcoming: The AFI is expected to release a calendar next month which, it said, will focus on giving athletes proper exposure for 2010.
Possible medal count: Six.

SHOOTING

Abhinav Bindra, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Samaresh Jung, Gagan Narang, Ronjan Sodhi, Anjali Bhagwat.... the list of India's world-beating shooters is getting longer. So, despite the preparation camp being hampered by the absence of rifle and pistol coaches, an unfinished Delhi range and a nation-wide swine-flu scare, India's shooting fraternity is quietly confident of yet another superlative show at Delhi 2010.

A core group of 150 shooters is toiling hard in the camp, now on in Pune, gunning for the 40 gold medals at stake. They are being put through a series of sessions that is a mix of practice and trial competitions. The shooters' calendar is packed till the Games with four World Cups, a World Championship and the Commonwealth Championship, to be held in Delhi in February, which is expected to give the shooters a dry run. Pistol shooters are still without a coach and rifle shooters are keenly awaiting the arrival of Stanislav Lapidus. The lucky ones are the shotgun shooters who are guided by top coaches Marcello Dradi and Zhang Shan.
Coaches: Marcello Dradi, Zhang Shan (shot gun), Sunny Thomas.
Last two Games: Manchester 2002: 14-7-3; Melbourne 2006: 16-7-4.
Events in the run-up: World Cup final, Asian Airgun championship, World Cup (four events), World Championship, SAF Games, Commonwealth Championships.
Possible medal count: More than Melbourne's tally of 27 medals.

TENNIS

Not a regular feature in Commonwealth Games, India lobbied hard to include tennis in the list for 2010. With the emergence of young stars like Sania Mirza, Somdev Devvarman and Yuki Bhambri to give company to old hands Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, the Indian tennis contingent holds the promise of more than one gold medal.

While the big stars keep themselves busy playing on the ATP and WTA Tour, it's the rest of the 40-player strong probables list that is put through the paces at training camps and ITF events held in India and abroad. The probables have been training under the watchful eyes of former Davis Cup players and now competent coaches, Jaideep Mukherjea, Nandan Bal, Enrico Piperno, Arun Kumar Singh and Nitin Kirtane. Doug McCurdy from the ITF, who is credited with revolutionising tennis in China, has been appointed as the foreign consultant for Indian tennis with a special focus on the 2010 Commonwealth Games. In addition, month-long training camps have been organised at the Nick Bolletieri Tennis Academy, the champions-producing tennis factory.

Possible medal count: Five gold medals are on offer at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and two medals, in the doubles and mixed doubles, are expected. Devvarman is a strong contender for a medal while Sania Mirza can never be ruled out.

BADMINTON

The Indian badminton team hasn't been preparing specifically for the Commonwealth Games and plans of getting the entire contingent to train together under one roof will materialise only a month or two before the event. Till then, the players are free to play the tournaments they want to. They will also be training at their respective bases. National coach Gopi Chand says he isn't too worried about the specific preparations for the Games as his players are doing well on the international circuit.
Coach: Gopi Chand, Hadi Idris (doubles).
Past record (medals): Kingston (Jamaica) 1966: Dinesh Khanna (bronze, men's singles); Edmonton (Canada) 1978: Prakash Padukone (gold, men's singles), Ami Ghia & Kanwal Thakur Singh (bronze, women's doubles); Brisbane (Australia) 1982: Syed Modi (gold, men's singles); Auckland (New Zealand) 1990: Deepti Thanekar (bronze, women's singles); Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) 1998: Aparna Popat (silver, women's singles), Gopi Chand (bronze, men's singles), silver, men's team & bronze, women's team; Manchester (England) 2002: Aparna Popat (bronze, women's singles); Melbourne (Australia) 2006: Chetan Anand (bronze, men's singles), India also won bronze in the team event in the combined format.
Upcoming events: Denmark Super Series (Oct 20-25), French Open (Oct 27-Nov 1), Hong Kong Open (Nov 10-15), China Open (Nov 17-22).
Medals expected: Gopi is sure Saina Nehwal will win gold in women's singles. He's also hoping for gold in the mixed doubles as Jwala Gutta and V Diju are in good form.

WEIGHTLIFTING

Indian weightlifters have, it seems, been destined to live with the stigma of doping scandals despite stellar performances. So, when India returned with no medals from the Asian Championships in Kazakhstan recently, there was hardly any disappointment. In fact, officials were relieved that no one was caught in the doping net. Though, weightlifters managed to get fourth spot, chief national coach Harnaam Singh took a realistic view: "Frankly speaking, we did not have any chance of winning a medal there. But the upcoming Commonwealth Championships in Malaysia (October 18) will be a big test."
Past record: India has so far won 93 medals in Commonwealth Games so far (33 gold, 39 silver, 21 bronze).
Expected medals: In men's category, VS Rao (56kg) and Ravi Kumar (69 kg) are the top medal contenders. In the women's section, Geeta Rani (75+) and Yumnam Chanu (58kg) will once again be gunning for gold in Delhi.
Weightlifters banned: Edwin Raju and Tejinder Singh tested positive at the 2006 Melbourne while Prameelavalli Bodari and Shailaja Pujari failed dope tests before it and were banned by IWF from the 2006 Games.

SWIMMING

The 2010 Games have opened up a window of opportunities for Indian swimmers. They now figure in more international competitions and train at the best-available facilities in foreign countries with the assistance of renowned coaches. The first camp began at the Sports Authority of India (South Centre) campus in Bangalore in January 2008. Later, a 30-member contingent, led by National coach Pradeep Kumar, trained at the High Performance Training Centre in Pretoria (South Africa) while Virdhawal Khade, Sandeep Sejwal and J Agniswhar along with their coach Nihar Ameen went to Europe for training and competitions. The final camp, comprising 30 swimmers, will begin on October 12 in Pune. Another 75-day exposure trip is planned either to the US or Europe. The squad for the Games will be picked in April next year.
Past record: Four swimmers - Rehan Poncha, Arjun Muralidharan, Puneet Rana and Shikha Tandon - participated in the Melbourne Games and returned without any medals. No medals in the previous editions too.
Upcoming events: Asian Indoor Games, Vietnam (October 30); Asian Swimming Championships (Gungzhou, November 22), SAF Games, Dhaka (January 29)
Possible medal count: Four.

BOXING

The Indian boxing federation has created a core group of 44 boxers who are undergoing training at the national boxing camp at Patiala. This group is likely to be pruned after the Nationals in October end. The Nationals will be followed by Super Cup in Mumbai in January which will be a selection ground for the Commonwealth Championships to be held in March in Delhi. The boxers will then be back at the camp till it's time for the final dress rehearsal -- Mini National Games -- at the Talkatora Stadium in July. The final team of 11 will be announced thereafter.
Coach: GS Sandhu.
Recent Record: 2006 Melbourne: 1 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze. 2002 Manchester: 1gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze. 1998 Kuala Lumpur: 1 silver.
Possible medal count: Although, the federation refused to take names, they are expecting two to three gold medals.

ARCHERY

The sports ministry has selected a total of 64 archers, in recurve and compound categories, for specialized training for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The training is on at the Sports Authority of India, Eastern Centre at Kolkata. The Archery Association of India (AAI) is planning to trim down the probables list to eight by next month. Going by present form, Indian archers are not doing very well, but there's still time for them to pick up at the right time.
Coach: Limba Ram. This Arjuna award winner missed a medal by only one point in Barcelona Olympics in 1992.
Past record: Archery was included as an optional sport in CWG in Brisbane in 1982. India went medal-less there.
Upcoming: Asian Grand Prix in Dhaka in October this year and the Asian Championship at Bali in November. Next year, India will take part in all the five Archery World Cups.
Medals expected: Mangal Singh Champia plus men's team event in recurve. Ladies compound team event. Individual event: Jhanu Hansda (compound).

SQUASH

The Indian squash team will face some of the best players in the world with traditional powerhouses Pakistan, England, Australia and Canada vying for honours. The national squash federation has picked 15 men and 12 women players in the "core-probables" list and the coaching programme involves training both at the Indian Squash Academy, Chennai and abroad. Besides, the players have been sent for exposure trips to England, Malaysia and Egypt.
Coaches: National coach: Cyrus Poncha, Foreign coach: Subramaniam Singaraveloo.
Past record: No medals so far.
Expected medals: The hosts will be looking for doubles medals in both men's and women's.

Commonwealth Games at 'serious risk'

"The head of the London-based Commonwealth Games Federation, Michael Fennell, has sent a stinging letter to the committee organising the Delhi Games saying chaotic preparations have put the Commonwealth Games brand at ''serious risk.''"

which were responded to by Lalit Bhanot

"Mr Bhanot stopped short of dismissing Mr Fennell's concerns but said he ''may not have received our latest information''."

Not directly relevant, but about big games hosting:
Asking whether the Olympics is good for a city is like asking if speed dating will lead to a long, solid marriage. The answer to both: It depends. When it comes to the long-term impact of the Olympics on urban well-being, the historical record is surprisingly mixed. Nor do past Olympic hosts provide reliable guidelines for how to guarantee the best outcome. Winning the bid is definitely more like shooting a class V rapid in an untested kayak than like lining up a foul shot in basketball. Both could involve sinking.

Received an email forwarded by iit administration to its alumni seeking help from the Commonwealth Games Directorate towards successful completion of games. Nice thick 33 page brochure detailing the games etc., but email does nt say what specific skill-set they are looking for. Wants students as well as faculty involvement. Just says contact us for more info, we will have an interview and we can take it from there. I would assume help is sought for waste disposal, large-scale organization + management, security design + as an avenue for exposure to future managers.

At least, it does nt look like the output of a typewriter, so onwards....

Rahul, our friends at Skyscrapercity.com/India are doing a commendable job tracking media sources and other use content on the Commonwealth Games. The last few days have seen a flurry of activity. Do check it out.

Looks like there really is something bothering the British. Now Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, will visit India to check up on the Commonwealth Games progress.

I think after a point, the organizing committee should make it clear that hosting so many delegations regularly hampers preparations and wastes precious time. It feels like they're out with a magnifying glass.

20 hoteliers 'opt out' of Games project

Definitely, world will start comparing the Beijing Olympics and Delhi commonwealth games. Kudos to our "hame kitna milage" politicians and babus, probably Indians will be embarrassed before the world.

Chill pill maadi saar. Most of these hoteliers wanted GoI to bankroll their investments to the order of 1000s of crore Rs when the global investment market fell flat. Many of them are based in Dubai or in JV with ME-companies. GoI told them to go $crew themselves and thats why this noble rendering of "opting out". The GoDelhi is in the process of fixing the stuff on the ground by doing it under a public sector initiative. 1000s of crore Rs have been floated for just this process recently. There are recent pics of progress in construction work, in the above link, if you cared to click and see what people on the ground know. To be fairly honest, the construction progress is NOT too bad at all. Most of the stadia will be available 2-3 months before official opening of the games, one or two will take all the way till a day or two before the games are going to be declared open. Given the economic meltdown elsewhere, and given the state of Londonistan2012, I think you should thank PM MMS, CM Sheila Dikshit and Suresh Kalmadi for taking this as a personal H&D issue.

The seriousness of the GoI is so high that PM MMS played some soft-ball diplomacy in saying "Lara is an icon" when he attended the CW summit in Trinidad. The result: Trinidadian Usain Bolt has now confirmed his participation in the games. As far as I know, the only blemish of the games will be if the Indian weightlifting contingent takes part in the games. Apart from that, Delhi metro, accommodation, security, conduct of the games, even poor Dilli-ites' spitting syndrome will be under check. This is H&D issue all the way to hell. This is THE biggest event we will/will have conduct/ed in the next 20/last 60 years (even including the 51/82 asiads, 87/96/2011 WCC, 85/2010 WCH events etc.) We wont bid for the OG in 2020 or 24 and CWG 2010 is going to be green and make goras vent their spleen.
Definitely, world will start comparing the Beijing Olympics and Delhi commonwealth games.
Regarding Beijing OG, please take a look at the white elephant called sparrow's nest or wtf it is called. Beijing was a reflection of paranoidal china with even the kid singing the song in the march-past changed for H&D purposes. Delhi 2010 will not throw away Delhi people to outskirts just because a couple of assorted goras would like to run the 100ms dash. This is NOT how we operate, and we have our own way. Sit back, relax and take a kitkat. Trust me, there are at least 1000 people trying to get the show hit paydirt on time, heck we even postponed our National Games in Jharkand to ensure that the administrators are on the ground monitoring the progress of the construction/infra development work.

the locations of some of the hotels dont look too viable given the large nos
of rooms in each location. I mean wazirpur is up north in the yamuna somewhere - this is where drinking water for dilli is drawn off the yamuna before any urban nullahs start disgorging.

whos going to stay in such hotels after the event?

none of the locations I read of are exactly GK-I, vasant vihar or jor bagh to put it delicately.

India has bought out the gora-dom, esp the Ozzies and the anglais. The "advising" committees are wholesale gora-dom. So now they have a vested interest in ensuring the success of the CWG :rotfl:. Quite chankian if you ask me, throw breadcrumbs to morons so that they stop acting like morons :).

Slaving for the Commonwealth

Very surprising that the local media did not make an issue of this.

Commonwealth Games: No concerns yet for security
The New Zealand Olympic Committee has confirmed the Government’s travel advice has not changed, despite the series of bomb blasts outside the IPL cricket match in Bangalore.

With six months until the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, New Zealand’s leading athletes aren’t yet put off going to India.

Commnwealth Games gold medallist Moss Burmester was today more worried about the pain of a gym session after a week off, than security concerns ahead of the games.

“I’m not really sure what’s happening, I guess the NZOC will look after us,” he says.

“They’ll make sure everything’s okay. I can’t focus too much on that. I’ve got six months of really hard training first.”

Burmester’s manager Nick Cowan also looks after shot put champion Valeri Vili, and says the security for the Commonwealth Games can’t be compared to that used for the cricket.

“With Commonwealth Games you’re enclosed in the village. Security is pretty tight travelling to and from the venue,” he says.

“You can’t rule out whether they would or wouldn’t go because it’s a fairly volatile situation. Having said that, that’s a decision that would be made right before the games.”

Tight security is not new. In the wake of terror attacks on Israeli athletes in Munich in 1972, New Zealand’s runners were under lock and key from the moment they touched down in Montreal for the 1976 Olympics.

“We were put on a bus that had an armed guard on the front and the back of the bus. When we left the basement of the airport we had a police car in front of us and a police car behind us while we went into the village,” says Olympic silver medallist Dick Quax.

He says sport must stand up to the threat of terror and says, just like he did in 1976, he would go to Delhi – but for as short a time as possible.

“I would go to the opening ceremony, I wouldn’t got to the closing ceremony. I would stay out of New Delhi and train somewhere else, fly in just before my event and leave immediately after.”

It’s a format Vili and other high profile Kiwi athletes will probably follow as, for now at least, they stay focussed on achieving more Commonwealth Games golden moments.

Games security still not in place
The government may have assured the 71 countries participating in the Commonwealth Games that security during the 12-day event will be foolproof but with just six months to go, it isn’t so sure itself.

Security and toilets were top concerns at a review meeting chaired by Union cabinet secretary KM Chandrashekhar and attended by all the stakeholders — ministries, civic agencies, sports bodies and the Delhi government — last month.

The Games’ organising committee blamed the police for delaying the implementation of security measures by eight to 10 months. “There were genuine concerns in the process of security arrangements made by the Delhi Police, including procurement of equipment,” committee CEO Jarnail Singh said at the meeting. HT has a copy of the meeting minutes.

“Security preparations were complicated due to the insistence of the police on having their own screening and accreditation process for people working in the stadia,” said Delhi chief secretary Rakesh Mehta.

The police are still to hire cargo scanners and buy equipment like hand-held metal detectors, road blockers. But they denied there was a delay. “We have bought some equipment and tenders for others are in the final stage,” said Rajan Bhagat, spokesman, Delhi Police.

With the committee also concerned about inadequate toilets, it was decided that additional toilets will be constructed but only outside the venues, with access from inside.

Delhi markets to close on CWG opening, closing days
NEW DELHI: Popular Delhi markets including Connaught Place have been advised by police to remain closed on the opening and closing days of the Commonwealth Games in October and instead remain open on their weekly day off.

The Delhi Police advisory is part of the security arrangements for the Oct 3-14 Games here.

Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said: "We are in the process of issuing advisory to market associations about the closure of shops on the opening and closing days of the Commonwealth Games. We especially want the major markets near the Games venues to remain closed on the two days. However, the markets can stay open on their weekly day off," Bhagat told IANS.

The opening and the closing ceremonies of the Games, on Oct 3 and 14 respectively, will be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in south Delhi.

Khan Market is located only two kilometres from the stadium.

Sanjeev Mehra, president of the Khan Market Traders Association, told IANS: "We received the police advisory about two weeks back. We will surely follow the guidelines as security is of prime concern and anything to do with the Commonwealth Games is a matter of national pride. However, the market will stay open on Monday to minimise our losses.

"The advisory makes sense. On the opening and the closing days of the Games, if the markets are closed, the traffic will be relatively smooth," he said.

Khan Market, which is a favourite with diplomats and expatriates, is normally shut Monday. But since the opening ceremony falls on a Sunday, it will close that day.

A shopkeeper at Connaught Place said: "Business will definitely be affected by closing the market on two days. But by keeping the market open on the weekly day off, the loss will be compensated to an extent."

Shopkeepers in some other markets like Sarojini Nagar are still to receive the advisory.

Roads get a blue coat for Games traffic plan rollout
NEW DELHI: Starting next month, the traffic police is planning to start dry runs of the traffic management plan for Commonwealth Games. In phases, one lane of road space on all roads leading to Games venues, Commonwealth Games village, and the airport, will be blocked for normal traffic. The civic agencies have started marking out the lane in blue on several roads, and once the markings are complete, the dry runs will commence.

With the sole solution to Delhi’s traffic mess — the Intelligent Traffic Signals (ITS) project — missing the September deadline, the traffic police plans to hold trial runs of the traffic management plan which has been prepared for the Commonwealth Games. During the 12-day period starting October 3, normal traffic will not be allowed to use a pre-marked lane on selected roads. All cars, buses, etc, ferrying athletes, delegates, will use the dedicated lane, being called the Games lane. The traffic police plan to impose a heavy penalty on normal vehicles which trespass into this space.

Senior officials revealed the lanes will not be blocked off round the clock. But a schedule will be prepared and each time there is an event in the vicinity, or on days of the opening and closing ceremonies, the space will be reserved for Games traffic.

In order to sensitize Delhiites about the lane segregation, and also see its impact on movement of traffic in
the city, the cops are going to start enforcing segregation of Games lane on select roads starting next month. ‘‘Games lanes on all the roads are not going to be blocked at once. We plan to take up stretches and enforce lane discipline to see how it works and also sensitize drivers. The first dry runs will start in June and several rounds will be carried out in the next few months,’’ said Ajay Chadha, special commissioner of police (traffic).

To start with, the dry runs will be held on Sundays and holidays, when traffic is thin. But later, these will be tried out even on working days to see the impact of flow of traffic, as the volumes are very high on Delhi roads.

The Games lane will be marked using blue paint along with the Commonwealth Games logo on the affected roads. The process of marking has already begun and the cops are reportedly waiting for this process of physical marking to complete to start the trials.

We wont bid for the OG in 2020 or 24 and CWG 2010 is going to be green and make goras vent their spleen
I hope we dont bid for the OG EVER and give one more opportunity for the blood sucking leeches in Dilli to steal some $20b of tax payer money. Isn't sucking $6b for CWG enough ?. Think of it. What do I as a tax payer get for $6b ?. Some goras from Kaneda, Inglistan and Owwstralia running and jumping and swimming ?

A cricket cup pays for itself many times over. This CWG is a black hole (or rather another Delhi) that sucks up unlimited amount of money from others.

Ahh, the angst of NOT living in Delhi

At least we would get some nicely made roads at the end of this royal mess.

bitchier actually, they get turned on by the size of one's paycheck.

----------

Car travel in Delhi is such a pain right now. I travel 30 km both ways these days, and it takes me 1.5 hours - that's a speed of 20 kmph. This is all because of the humungous levels of construction going on right now.

I am hoping for the construction to end soon, as it will end the clogging up of the streets. Delhi has been under construction like forever now.

First it was the Metro and the flyovers, then this games thingy - keeps the congress government in delhi nicely oiled with bribes.

Wonder what they will think of next? Probably low cost housing.

thats the beauty of indic cities. a layout comes up with fragmentary roads, no water and fitful power. houses come up. then first wave of shops. over course of time more houses come up and bigger shops, flats start to come up.
by the time every plot is filled up, the first wave of houses guys are busy constructing extra floors or even tearing down and putting up buildings.

its NEVER in stable state. people are always doing "stuff". I have never seen my layout stabilize in 3 yrs, there's always bricks and sand and steel rods on the road somewhere.

by the time it reaches stability the layout is old and decayed and crowded with adjoining walls and 100s of small shops and flats and people start moving out for newer areas like a swarm of termites.

haha, no, just observation from a safe distance - the situation can be ridiculous in the circles of the 'beautiful' people.

But I guess all Delhites (male as well as female) are hard core materialists.
