There is a clockwise rogue circulation in the eastern Indian ocean that is redirecting the Pacific ocean moisture back towards SE Asia. Without Pacific ocean moisture the monsoon will struggle to revive as the majority of monsoon rain comes from the pacific. Watching and waiting for the circulation to dissipate. Pray a little harder folks….

The rogue circulation has broken down. Pacific moisture is getting through and wind speeds are increasing nicely. The 'Somali Jet' is winding up nicely. Revival should occur in the next 24-48 hours.

Dayum! A Pacific Cyclone has sprung up and and has sucked all the monsoon moisture away. Within 24 hours of the monsoon spell beginning it has moved into a break monsoon pattern. No indication on revival. Can't seem to get a break this year. At least East & Central parts are getting rain.

Mumbai had torrential rains 2 days ago. But not much rain in the catchment areas of the lakes. So the water situation is still pretty bad. They may announce more water cuts. What an irony.

KRS and Kabini had copious inflows of water, so that's the only good news on a rather less than ordinary monsoon seasons so far in TN. Also a new regulator (dam) has been built in Cauvery to hold water, in case it floods like last time. Plans are to connect Vaikai and Cauvery from there.

The way things are in India as far as weather data goes is pathetic at best. At local airports simple anemometers are often out of service for a long period of time. With all of the vast engineering colleges all over country, they could at least have a project where the students could develop their own low cost weather station and interlink the data via the internet. It would be of great benefit to farmers and the public as a whole to monitor local and regional climate changes.

Why are you asking for GOI? What is the 100% literate and HDI advanced Kerala government doing? Can they not fund a project for weather monitoring benefiting the people of Kerala at the very least?

Another powerful looking Cyclone is winding up in BoB. Folks keep an eye on this. Cyclone HudHud. Such an early organization of winds is not a good sign for the season.

Here is the predicted track. Straight for that Odisha/Andhra vulnerable zone. there is a new cyclone monitoring page. Hope it works better than the old one that collapse during the Odisha cyclone.

So the predictions from IMD were 180kmph winds, but they measured up to 210kmph winds at land fall.

Cyclone Hudhud, tracked by Nasa, is category 4 cylcone
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/indi ... 852566.cms
The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (Incois) at Hyderabad issued as many as 28 bulletins until the cyclone hit Visakhapatnam, with the IMD also giving detailed bulletins about where the landfall would be. "We forecast a wind speed of 180 kmph at different times," an official of Incois said. In fact, a wind guage on a ship recorded the windspeed as 180 kmph though the IMD recorded a maximum of 205-210 kmph, the official said.

A near-real time Multi-Satellite Precipation Data analysis for October 7-14 of rainfall by Nasa showed that the rainfall totals were highest over the open ocean which was upwards of 550 mm and over land, the highest totals of 200 mm to 250 mm - which is up to 12 inches.

Sigh! Accuweather had posted that sea surface temperature was very high from about 150 km out from shore and that the Cyclone with speed up due to this. Doe the IMD even monitor sea surface temp. What are they going to get from a few random motor boat excursions. I mean really, after the cyclone. Who comes up with this stuff.

What annoys me the most is the predictable follow on blizzard that killed numerous travellers in the Himalayas. AFAIK no real warning or alert was given for folks to take shelter. As always there is still no doppler radar coverage of the Himalayas. GOI remains out of action and mostly clueless.

Meanwhile Naidu is proposing to Cyclone proof Vizag. Long overdue step for East coast IMO.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/indi ... 843539.cms
At present, as many as 82,000 electricity poles exist in the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) limits including Bheemili and Anakapalli. According to Ajay Jain, the power companies suffered Rs 1000 crore loss including Rs 500 crore in Visakhapatnam city alone due to the cyclone. "If another cyclone hits the AP coast, it will hurt us very badly. The permanent solution to avert this is underground power cabling, which exist in the developed countries like the US which is prone to hurricanes," he said.

According to energy department officials, underground cable system would make the power lines less susceptible to outages during disasters like cyclone Hudhud. "Underground cabling may increase the initial cost of electric power transmission and distribution, but, in long run, will reduce operational costs, human loss due to electric shocks, power interruptions and damages to power lines," the official said.
Apart from underground cabling, Naidu wants to provide piped water supply to the residents of Visakhapatnam by laying separate lines direct to homes. If his plan succeeds, the existing public water supply system would be withdrawn to pave the way for direct-to-home supply network. The modalities for the scheme are to be prepared by the municipal and urban development officials, who, however, said that the project can take shape only with central funding through the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

"Drinking water supply schemes that are presently being promoted would be converted into direct-to-home model so that in the event of any disaster, there would be no disruption in the drinking water supply," said a senior official in the MAUD ministry. According to sources, Naidu has asked the MAUD officials to prepare a detailed project report to be submitted to the Centre.

In other steps aimed at making the coastal region cyclone-proof, Naidu wants to construct pucca dwellings. After finding that most of the deaths reported due to cyclone Hudhud were caused due to collapse of houses or walls, Naidu has directed his officials to come up with a permanent solution by which cyclone-proof pucca houses would be constructed in all the coastal districts.

Yet another step contemplated is ensuring a more permanent greenery, especially in the wake of the cyclone destroying most of the trees in the Port City. The AP CM wants the agriculture university scientists to identify tree varieties that could withstand cyclone and floods. Trees like crepe myrtle, date palm and eucalyptus are strongly suggested as right varieties that can be planted in all the parks in Vizag city.
BTW some one needs to tell the good minister that his government at the center has dismantled the JNNURM scheme and there is no replacement.

India Cyclone Leads to Blizzard in Nepal That Leaves at Least 27 Dead
http://mashable.com/2014/10/16/india-cy ... hud-nepal/
The blizzard was partly a product of the cyclone's counter-clockwise circulation, which pushed copious amounts of moisture up against the wall of mountains in Nepal and northern India.

The winds around the cyclone temporarily directed a firehose of moisture from the warm waters of the Indian Ocean north-northwestward toward the Himalayas — some of the world's tallest mountain peaks with elevations above 20,000 feet — at the time when elite mountaineers were trying to reach the summit of mountains such as K2 and Mount Everest.

The snowfall, which was measured in feet, not inches, occurred as the mountains were sideswiped by the tail of the dying cyclone. Snowfall totals topped 6 feet in some places, according to multiple reports. The mountains acted like a sponge, squeezing out moisture as it was lifted up and over them, in a process known as orographic lift.

The blizzard, the tail end of a cyclone that hit the Indian coast a few days earlier, appeared to contribute to an avalanche Wednesday that killed at least eight people in Phu village in neighboring Manang district. The dead included one Indian, four Canadian trekkers and three villagers, according to government official Devendra Lamichane. The villagers' bodies were recovered Wednesday, he said. The foreigners' bodies were buried in up to 2 meters (6.5 feet) of snow, and digging them out will take days, Lamichane said. Three Canadian trekkers who survived the avalanche were taken by helicopter to a shelter in a nearby village. No information was immediately available on their condition.

Authorities said five climbers were killed in a separate avalanche about 45 miles to the west, at the base camp for Mount Dhaulagiri. The climbers, two Slovaks and three Nepali guides, were preparing to scale the 26,800-foot peak, the world's seventh tallest, according to Gyanedra Shrestha of Nepal's mountaineering department. Their bodies were recovered Thursday.

An avalanche in April just above the base camp on Mount Everest killed 16 Nepalese guides, the deadliest single disaster on the mountain. Some climate scientists say rising global temperatures have contributed to avalanches in the Himalayas.

While it is rare for tropical weather systems to produce snowfall, it has been known to happen. In fact, this scenario occurred during Hurricane Sandy in the U.S., when as much as 3 feet of snow fell in the mountains of West Virginia after the storm made landfall in New Jersey.

Theo, the data collection post cyclone is normal operations and is done by NIO and not IMD. With all the churning the upwelling will cause a nutrient excess and algal blooms depending on other conditions. Very likely, they are not on small boats, and go with all kinds of instrumentation.

Bade saar,

There are a lot of these petroleum funded nuts running around trying to FUD. Ignore is the best option. Their credibility is zero. I wish this stuff would not be posted on BRF, it reduces the credibility of this forum as well. There are still well-funded rightwing nuts running around denying Plate Tectonics and Evolution and even the age of the planet!
-----------------------------

The chart that scares me the most is the one below. This is what science is most concerned about with climate change IMHO.

Take a look at that temperature chart. Notice that tiny little squiggle at the end where the temperature has been stable for the last 10,000 years or so. That is the entirety of modern human history. For the first time agriculture was possible and the width/area of the temperate zones, where 80% of our food, grains, cattle, etc is grown expanded dramatically. Europe/NA/China/India (stable monsoon). Undoubtedly humans attempted agriculture many times before and could never get it going. We know for sure Agriculture ended in the Sahara when the climate was swinging wildly 12,000 ya. Only for the last 10,000 years has agriculture on a large scale with predictability really been possible. No agriculture = no modern human society = no 7 Billion people.

Once we get knocked off our comfortable climate plateau, no one really knows which way the climate will go. In 200 years you could have 1 mile of Ice on Chicago/NY/Berlin/London or we could lose NY/Florida/London/Mumbai/Chennai/Kerala etc to rising sea levels. Scientist consensus is the latter but yes the climate could wildly whipshaw the other way. In any case wild variability will make agriculture essentially impossible ending our civilization as we know it. It is best not to play this game, though I may already be too late….

The nuts running around are the ones promoting the global warming theory and trying to profit off it.

John Casey gets no corporate funding.

Antarctic sea ice is hitting record levels although what the meaning of all this is I've yet to figure out.

I suspect I'm not the only one. I'm wary of the global warming hype being rammed through and Goldman Sachs crooks trying to setup a Caron trading scheme.

I also noticed the term global warming has quietly been dropped and substituted with the word climate change. That way if the wind blows its climate change and if the wind does not blow, hey its also climate change! That boondoggle which requires no scientific proof can then be used to tax society by those who do no real work.

There was also Climate gate where some British university was hacked and emails released showing researchers were fudging the climate dataset to fit their warming theory. One even claimed it was a travesty that the original untampered data did not support global warming. This was the university the UN was quoting for its global warming arguments! Lol

Give me some time and I'll dig it up.

According to this he is another clueless mendacious hack.

I tend to read your posts with interest but be cautious before posting such stuff in the forum. I think you have more credibility when you go after the bankers.

The Global warming nomenclature issue is a purely made up one. Climate Change and Global warming are not the same thing. The warning from science has always been the same and the nomenclature has been consistent for 30+ years. It is politics that has tended to misunderstand the message being delivered.

BTW your chart on sea ice for 5 years showing a snippet is very misleading. Why don't you show the entire chart, and all the data from the 1950's on. It is all there you know....

I didn't see anything in that link which has John Casey connected with any tea party. Just a whole lot of conjecture and crap talk. There is of course a ton of money and grants being swallowed up by the global warming theorists who see anyone questioning their theory as a threat to their livelihood.

Secondly his predictions have been right since 2007 which regardless of what anyone says about him puts him on the right side of history. We'll see in the years ahead if his prediction of global cooling continues to pan out. If it does, it will be interesting to watch the global warming scientists do a backflip. Already the labels are beginning to change from global warming to climate change to hedge both outcomes.

My impression is that there is an awful lot of junk science being peddled in climatology. But let's reserve judgment till the data comes in. It should be evident over the next 5 years if the globe is headed into a cooling cycle.

As for the graph, it stretches back to 1981. I don't think there is any data on Antarctic sea ice stretching back to the 50s. If you have any, post it.

Be careful of global warming science it is a very difficult thing to get a handle on. Outside of human activity there are many variables which includes our sun's solar activity, the earth's fluctuating magnetic field, earth's precession, seismic activity and large meteor strikes. I've not seen any group that has credibility on this and further, this whole thing has such a political angle on it now, that you can't trust any side.

The danger I see are to the glaciers and ice packs in the Himalayas affecting the rivers of India. In India we need to reduce particulate emissions that change the albedo on Himalayan glaciers.

In effect, this is all that's left of the global-warming emergency the U.N. declared in its first report on the subject in 1990. The U.N. no longer claims that there will be dangerous or rapid climate change in the next two decades. Last September, between the second and final draft of its fifth assessment report, the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change quietly downgraded the warming it expected in the 30 years following 1995, to about 0.5 degrees Celsius from 0.7 (or, in Fahrenheit, to about 0.9 degrees, from 1.3).

Even that is likely to be too high. The climate-research establishment has finally admitted openly what skeptic scientists have been saying for nearly a decade: Global warming has stopped since shortly before this century began.

..
Alas, their explanations have made their predicament worse by implying that man-made climate change is so slow and tentative that it can be easily overwhelmed by natural variation in temperature—a possibility that they had previously all but ruled out.
..
If the pause lasted 15 years, they conceded, then it would be so significant that it would invalidate the climate-change models upon which policy was being built. A report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) written in 2008 made this clear: "The simulations rule out (at the 95% level) zero trends for intervals of 15 yr or more."

Well, the pause has now lasted for 16, 19 or 26 years—depending on whether you choose the surface temperature record or one of two satellite records of the lower atmosphere. That's according to a new statistical calculation by Ross McKitrick, a professor of economics at the University of Guelph in Canada.

It has been roughly two decades since there was a trend in temperature significantly different from zero. The burst of warming that preceded the millennium lasted about 20 years and was preceded by 30 years of slight cooling after 1940.
..
but that this effect will not be amplified much by feedbacks from extra water vapor and clouds, so the world will probably be only a bit more than one degree Celsius warmer in 2100 than today. By contrast, the assumption built into the average climate model is that water-vapor feedback will treble the effect of carbon dioxide.
..
Nearly 40 different excuses for the pause have been advanced, including Chinese economic growth that supposedly pushed cooling sulfate particles into the air, the removal of ozone-eating chemicals, an excess of volcanic emissions, and a slowdown in magnetic activity in the sun.

The favorite explanation earlier this year was that strong trade winds in the Pacific Ocean had been taking warmth from the air and sequestering it in the ocean. This was based on a few sketchy observations, suggesting a very tiny change in water temperature—a few hundredths of a degree—at depths of up to 200 meters.
..
The warming in the last three decades of the 20th century, to quote the news release that accompanied their paper, "was roughly half due to global warming and half to the natural Atlantic Ocean cycle." In other words, even the modest warming in the 1980s and 1990s—which never achieved the 0.3 degrees Celsius per decade necessary to satisfy the feedback-enhanced models that predict about three degrees of warming by the end of the century—had been exaggerated by natural causes. The man-made warming of the past 20 years has been so feeble that a shifting current in one ocean was enough to wipe it out altogether.

Putting the icing on the cake of good news, Xianyao Chen and Ka-Kit Tung think the Atlantic Ocean may continue to prevent any warming for the next two decades.
..
The global warming bandwagon wasn't raised before actual global cooling cycle began post 1990-2000, and now there is hedging going on as per whatever happens. i.e. More weather concern literature for future. In other words, no one gives a damn, except mother nature who has quietly wiping out effects of global warming with shifting ocean currents.

It is like this newsthat sightings of alien ships were actually CIA special missions, checked by CIA against log entries of US Air Force - but never released to the general public. It helps the fantasy industry of alien movies but that is all to it.

Mort,

I think there is more confusion here. I too used to be on the fence but have changed my mind recently.
The last poll of scientists from all disciplines had 97% of scientists saying anthropogenic Climate Change, at present Global Warming is real and ongoing. This is over whelming consensus IMO and we should take it as fact. I suspect even things like General Relativity don't get that sort of overwhelming consensus.

The question then becomes should we do something about it.
Not doing anything about it is a valid choice. We could say we have no control and let things happen as they may. This is where all the confusion exists.
My own view is that it a choice all of us are going to have to make at a personal level.

That is a lie. There is no global warming real or ongoing.

The fact that the name has morphed from Global Warming to Climate Change to hedge both possibilities of cooling & warming is a good indicator that these jokers have no clue what's going on. The fact is if the earth was warming, 50000 scientists would not be needed to prove it. All you'd need is a temperature data set from the thousands of weather stations around the world and an Excel spreadsheet. The fact that none can produce any straight data showing a global warming trend blows a big hole through the theory.

There is no money to be made by admitting the largest body in the solar system has the largest influence on Earth's temperature. There is a ton of money, grants..etc to be made by claiming human activity needs to be controlled because it changes the Earth's temperature. Many tens of billions have gone into the global warming boondoggle without a single model that accurately predicts global temperature or even trend emerging.

5 more years of the global cooling trend and the global warming goose will be cooked.

And now for some entertaining quotes from Climategate. This particular university is the one the UN relied on for data to promote the global warming theory. Keep in mind, these are among the top researchers in the Global Warming field. Enjoy :)

____

Background
In late November 2009, more than 1,000 e-mails between scientists at the Climate Research Unit of the U.K.’s University of East Anglia were stolen and made public by an as-yet-unnamed hacker. Climate skeptics are claiming that they show scientific misconduct that amounts to the complete fabrication of man-made global warming.
Well, I have my own article on where the heck is global warming…The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t.- Kevin Trenberth, IPCC Lead Author, Climategate e-mail, Oct. 12, 2009
I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) and from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline.- Phil Jones, Director of the Climatic Research Unit, Climategate e-mail, Nov. 16, 1999
I know there is pressure to present a nice tidy story as regards ‘apparent unprecedented warming in a thousand years or more in the proxy data’ but in reality the situation is not quite so simple.- Keith Briffa, Climatic Research Unit, Climategate e-mail, 22 september 1999
I can’t see either of these papers being in the next IPCC report. Kevin [Trenberth] and I will keep them out somehow, even if we have to redefine what the peer-review literature is!- Phil Jones, Director of the Climatic Research Unit, Climategate e-mail, 8 juli 2004
Mike [Mann], can you delete any e-mails you may have had with Keith [Trenberth] re AR4? Keith will do likewise…Can you also e-mail Gene and get him to do the same? I don’t have his e-mail address…We will be getting Caspar to do likewise.- Phil Jones, Director of the Climatic Research Unit, Climategate e-mail, 29 mei 2008
I’m getting hassled by a couple of people to release the CRU station temperature data. Don’t any of you three tell anybody that the UK has a Freedom of Information Act.- Phil Jones, Director of the Climatic Research Unit, Climategate e-mail, Feb. 21, 2005
We have 25 or so years invested in the work. Why should I make the data available to you, when your aim is to try to find something wrong with it- Phil Jones, Director of the Climate Research Unit at East Anglia University, Climategate e-mail to Warwick Hughes, 2004
What if climate change appears to be just mainly a multidecadal natural fluctuation? They’ll kill us probably …- Tommy Wills, Swansea University, Mail naar mailing list tree-ring data forum ITRDB, 28 Mar 2007 (email 1682)
I find myself in the strange position of being very skeptical of the quality of all present reconstructions, yet sounding like a pro greenhouse zealot here!- Keith Briffa, Climategate e-mail 2009
“It would be nice to try to “contain” the putative “Medieval Warm Period”.” – Michael Mann
“In our discussion of possible participants in Bern…the last two on the list (with question marks) would be unwise choices because they are likely to cause conflict than to contribute to consensus and progress.” – Michael Mann

What's utterly amazing is that even after damning evidence that these jokers have been playing around with the data and playing politics, that they still get to keep their jobs after a (white wash) investigation by the university claiming no evidence of misconduct!

Academia in the climatology field is like banking. They can commit crimes while their cronies sitting in govt & law enforcement pretend to look the other way with only token fines and pretence of justice.

Never will I trust these lieing con artists.

India, whose pollution is less than a quarter of China’s level, maintains it’s the richer countries that must move first on the issue. He said the country will push for an extension of the Kyoto Protocol, which called on industrial nations to cut back fossil-fuel pollution.
..
At the same time, India is moving forward with tapping cleaner forms of energy, especially for its power industry. It will add 100 gigawatts solar power capacity by 2017, an ambition on par with China’s own target.
By the way, Kyoto protocol also allows for 3 market based mechanisms as additional means to meet targets (is like not meeting targets and doing something else instead!). link
So when developed countries inflate global warming figures, they can pressure others more while doing nothing on ground since the numbers are cooked.

By the way, last december this is what happened in Brazil:
link
The authority to determine which areas of Brazil belong to native peoples currently resides with the country’s executive branch.
..
Indians and other opponents of the new bill say transferring that power to Congress would give more power to large landowners and mining and lumber companies that operate in the Amazon region where most of Brazil's indigenous population lives.

That's because they have too much influence over the country's parliament, protesters argue.

Indigenous leaders worry the new bill, known as PEC 215/00, could legitimise the occupation of large parts of their land in the Amazon by farmers and loggers.
No European and American peace loving heart bleeding green peace kind of orgs have been found nearby, while focus is on how native Indian 'throw arrows' at police and disrupt proceedings where bills to give more powers to loggers and farmers is passed.

From link
There are about 240 tribes living in Brazil today, totaling around 900,000 people, or 0.4% of Brazil’s population.

The government has recognized 690 territories for its indigenous population, covering about 13% of Brazil’s land mass. Nearly all of this reserved land (98.5%) lies in the Amazon.

But although roughly half of all Brazilian Indians live outside the Amazon, these tribes only occupy 1.5% of the total land reserved for Indians in the country.
This is what happens when Europeans run riot on your land while lecture others somewhere else.

Peru now has a ‘licence to kill’ environmental protesters
..
vast majority of them indigenous – are on trial following protests
..
but what about the government functionaries who apparently gave the riot police the order to attack the protestors, the police themselves, and – following Wikileaks’ revelations of cables in which the US ambassador in Lima criticized the Peruvian government’s “reluctance to use force” and wrote there could be “implications for the recently implemented Peru-US FTA” if the protests continued
..
The conflict broke out in northern Peru after mainly indigenous Awajúns and Wampis had been peacefully protesting a series of new laws which were supposedly emitted to comply with a trade agreement between Peru and the US and which made it easier, among other things, for extractive industries to exploit natural resources in their territories. Following a blockade of a highway near a town called Bagua – and an agreement that the protestors would break up and go home, reached the day before – early on 5 June the police moved to clear it and started shooting. In the ensuing conflict, 10 police officers, five indigenous people and five non-indigenous civilians were killed, more than 200 injured – at least 80 of whom were shot – and, elsewhere in the Bagua region, a further 11 police officers were killed after being taken hostage.
..
“So far only protesters have been brought to trial,” said Amnesty International in a statement marking five years since the conflict and pointing out that human rights lawyers have said there is no serious evidence linking the accused to the crimes they are being prosecuted for – which include homicide and rebellion.
..
That law, no. 30151, was promulgated in January this year and is, according to the IDL’s Juan José Quispe, a modification of existing legislation passed by the previous government. The modification consists of replacing three words – “en forma reglamentaria” – with another five – “u otro medio de defensa” – which Quispe says means that any soldier or police officer can now kill or injure a civilian without needing to use his or her weapon “according to regulations”, or by using something other than his or her weapon.
..
if you’re Peruvian and you publicly express concern about the environmental and social impacts of mining operations you can expect the following: death threats, rape threats, physical and electronic surveillance, smears and stigmatization by national mainstream media, police acting as “private security” for mining companies, confiscation or theft of equipment, “excessive use of force by police” during protests, arrest, or detention, and prosecution on charges of “rebellion, terrorism, violence, usurpation, trespassing, disobedience or resistance to an official order, obstructing public officers, abduction, outrage to national symbols, criminal damage, causing injury, coercion, disturbance or other public order offences.”
..
the “extraordinary use” of lawsuits constitutes an “abusive use of the judicial system” and impedes “the work of the [accused], affecting their reputation and furthering the view – often upheld by national media – that they are violent extremists. This is especially the case when accusations of terrorism, rebellion or violence are levied.” It states that almost 400 people currently face court proceedings
..
Licence to kill + FTA = deadly combo.

By the way, another report that focuses on how, in Brazil, big bad natives 'attack with arrows' bla bla
Brazil: Indians storm parliament with arrow and sheet
They injured four policemen and shot an official into the shoe. :rotfl:
..
indigene representatives wants however even more say over its country. From the project in opinion of critics above all great land owner as well as mine operators and timber industry in the Amazon would profit.
The important part comes in the last para only.

It is a good news and bad news kind of thing. Good news is that the animation is superb. Bad news is that the warming by a 1.25 F is very frightening. What is the rate of increase?
