^^ They purchased the rights to the brand, even if just to flog the history to unsuspecting buyers, nothing wrong in it. However, if they resort to selling stuff below even BOM value due to backing of the Chinese state, something regulatory (what?) needs to be done.
I am afraid that they might replicate their success in the mobile phone market, in turn destroying our Domestic industry ! With the deepest pockets in the world and the Li-Ion ecosystem in their control, the Chinese will be very difficult to rein in.

viewtopic.php?p=2403132#p2403132 , a reply to your earlier query. Pick whichever you find in good condition at a fair price in your area. Used car dealers are mostly crooks, most cars are with a tampered ODO.

Maruti Will Not Send its cars for crash testing to Global NCAP

Classic case of student skipping the exams because failure is nearly guaranteed.

They would claim to meet Bharat NCAP which would probably be an ultra-watered down version of the real thing, making it easy for tin cans to score 5 stars.
Theek hai, as long as the market ignores.

Thing is I can understand first time buyers to ignore safety but there are quite a few well off folks who have a choice going for Maruti. Thier cars have become extremely light weight and not through use of expensive and lightweight materials found in high end cars, but making them lightweight and low cost. Thier milage is not through technology but just through ultra lightweight cars, also tyres, brakes cheaper parts are used. All this means you a car which is generally cheapest in the segment with fancy electronic features, good power/ torque to weight ratio , good milage and high resale, mainly on account of cheap spares.

Buying Maruti is a good financial decesion at the cost of safety. I hope more Indians start choosing safer options and end this monopoly.

This is true. My own family chides me for "wasting the seat space" in the car by having a child seat affixed. Part of the same set of people who used to poke fun at me for "wearing a helmet while riding a mere scooty", back in the early 2000s. :D

In addition to that he was in a Maruti SX4 where the manufacturer does not believe in putting Side impact beams in the doors and uses thin sheet metal to maximize mileage but occupant can feel the force of the collusion.

BS-6 Deadline looms. I doubt whether it would be pushed out due to CoronaVirus fears.

It would not be prudent for the govt to give an extension for BS4 as it had given ample notice for people to plan.

I think with 153 cr, they got only the brand names. They may not have got the manufacturing plant & rights over ongoing R&D stuffs & patents, engine tech etc. :(

This report has some additional details (though sad one........)

TVS Begins Procedure To Purchase Norton Motorcycles
So far, details are sketchy, and there are absolutely no news on how much TVS may have shelled out to acquire the Norton brand. Additionally, there is still no news on what Norton's future strategy will be like under Indian ownership. Recent media reports did indicate TVS Motor Company's plans to bid for Norton Motorcycles, but the British brand has already sold off rights to its two engine platforms - the 961, as well as the 650 cc parallel-twin to two different Chinese firms.

Sodium-ion battery maker Faradion mulling over manufacturing in India.

Sodium-ion battery maker Faradion Ltd on Thursday said it is actively exploring having a manufacturing presence in India for its batteries for diversified applications.

The company, which had won its first order from ICM Australia, is seeking to push its Sodium-ion batteries over Lithium-ion batteries citing "exceptional superiority" and play a significant part in revolutionising automobile/mobility, storage and mobile sectors across the world.

"India is one of the largest markets for mobile devices across the world. Recently, the country has also demonstrated significant progress in the adoption of EV (Electric Vehicle) technology, making it a priority market for Faradion," the company said in a statement.

Further, as the world seeks out alternatives to China-dependent Lithium-ion batteries, Faradion's Sodium-ion based technology offers a promising solution, it claimed.

"In line with this, Faradion is actively exploring manufacturing presence in India for its Sodium-ion batteries for diversified applications," the company said.

Faradion CEO James Quinn said Australasia is the next logical region for the company given the market conditions.

“Faradion is accelerating large scale industrialisation of its safe, low cost, Sodium-ion energy storage technology. After Australia, we foresee India as our next priority big market, given the huge growth in mobile devices and a bigger electric mobility market waiting to grow rapidly," he said.

I expect used auto market in India to experience significant growth in the short-term. I think the confidence in terms of Covid safety on Indian public transportation system is not high and the same can be said about cabs services.

Many people will want own & use private vehicles as much as possible in the near future and probably will want to invest in an used one rather than a new vehicle. A newer one makes less sense since the job market will be filled with high uncertainty and folks don't want to be burdened with EMI. Expect longer commuting times as well as bigger traffic jams :)

Maruti Suzuki writes off Rs 125 crore on obsolete BS-IV cars
Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker, has absorbed a hit of Rs 125 crore over unsold stock of Bharat Stage IV (BS-IV) vehicles which have now become obsolete.

A top executive of the Delhi-based automaker stated that the write-off is the result of the inventory lying with the company and its dealers. Maruti Suzuki was the first to start the transition to BS-VI from BS-IV, a full year ahead of the deadline of April 1, 2020. However, by the end of 2019-20, the company was left with some unsold stock.

Several other companies are also expected to disclose their write-offs of BS-IV inventory in the coming weeks. Their woes were compounded when the final 10 days of March were blocked because of the nation-wide lockdown.
.
.
.
The Supreme Court did allow the sale of 10 percent of the BS-IV inventory after April 1, 2020 following a joint petition from the manufacturers and dealers. This was to be done after lifting of the lockdown. But, the continuous extension of the lockdown period impacted the liquidation process.

There seems to be a co-relation between huge number of cases and cities with widely used public transport. New York and Mumbai for example. As more and more people realise this, demand for cheap cars/vehicles would go up in near term.
However, since "going out" would be minimal and strictly (hoping) for essential activities only, I expect traffic to remain the same as it is today (pre-lockdown).

BS-IV vehicle sold after March 31 won’t be registered: SC
By Samanwaya Rautray, ET Bureau Last Updated: Jul 09, 2020, 07:20 AM IST

New Delhi: The Supreme Court said no Bharat Stage-IV vehicles sold after March 31 should be registered and asked the government to verify whether dealers had overstepped a concession given to them due to the lockdown.

India switched to BS-VI emission standards on April 1 from BS-IV. While the top court had earlier rejected the demand of automobile dealers to extend the deadline to clear their existing inventories of BS-IV vehicles, it allowed them to sell up to 10 per cent of such inventory in a short window after the lockdown restrictions were eased.

“You have sold more than allowed,” a bench led by Justice Arun Mishra said on Wednesday, adding: “Do not take advantage of this court by playing fraud.”

The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) had earlier claimed in the court that the sector was stuck with ₹7,000 crore of unsold BS-IV vehicles. While allowing the short window to sell such vehicles in a March 27 order, the court noted that the sector had lost out a few days of sales due to the sudden clamping of the lockdown on March 25.

As of March 31, registration of more than 225,000 such vehicles were pending with state transport authorities, as per documents submitted in the court. The federation claimed that these were sold prior to March 31.

The court though demanded to know whether the companies had been selling BS-IV vehicles during the lockdown and through online sales.

“How were vehicles sold online at 30-40 per cent off? That too after March 31? What is this fraud? How have you sold during lockdown,” Justice Mishra asked.

No registration of BS-IV vehicles sold after March 31: SC
08 JULY 2020 Last Updated at 4:07 PM | SOURCE: IANS
https://www.outlookindia.com/newsscroll ... sc/1889481

Some additional information on above two articles on same subject.

Due to those kind of flip flop judgements and dealers making customers fools, the ultimate losers will be the customers. How do a cutomer supposed to know if the BS-IV vehicle he buying from the dealer falls within 10% quota allocated by me lords ????

They have paid their hard earned money, I don't think the dealers will refund that and take those cars backs. So end end customers will caught up with a vehicle which is without registration number (i.e a illegal vehicle) and may not even get an Insurance policy for such vehicles too.

Govt to study auto supply chain to boost localisation
ET Bureau Last Updated: Aug 22, 2020, 12:04 AM IST

NEW DELHI: The government has sought detailed information from automobile manufacturers on investments in the country, industry imports and localisation levels across value chains in a bid to curb imports and promote indigenous manufacturing.

The move follows a meeting between commerce & industry minister Piyush Goyal and senior auto industry representatives on August 13 to deliberate on possibilities of increasing localisation in the automotive sector, which was followed up with a review meeting on Friday, where 24 sectors were reviewed. China is India’s largest supplier of auto parts.
.
.
The commerce ministry thereafter directed the industry to share company-specific information related to investments, localisation levels, exports, imports and royalty payments. Industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has been asked to collate the data and share it.

“There is a lot of pressure. The government has been holding review meetings every fortnight to look at ways to increase localisation levels not only at the level of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) but also their tier-I and tier-II vendors.. The minister understands sourcing is top-down and has asked vehicle makers to submit the required data,” an industry executive said on condition of anonymity.

https://www.deshgujarat.com/2020/09/18/ ... -rickshaw/
Gandhinagar: Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani here today announced through videoconferencing an assistance scheme to encourage use of battery-operated two-wheelers and three-wheelers in the state to check air pollution.

Gujarat Government will provide subsidy of Rs.12,000 to school students studying in Standard-9 to colleges, with a target of 10,000 such vehicles. Similarly, a subsidy of Rs.48,000 will be given for three-wheeler e-rickshaw for individual and institutional beneficiaries, with a target of 5,000.

Announcing the scheme as part of five development projects, ‘Panchsheel’ Gift, to celebrate Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday today, Rupani also announced Rs.50 lakh scheme for charging e-vehicles for creating necessary infrastructure. It was on this day, 11 years ago the then Gujarat’s Chief Minister Narendra Modi had set up the country’s first a separate Climate Change Department, long before the climate change appeared as a challenge before the world.

Mahindra Roxor seems to have found a few fans in the USA.

I think it is originally intended for farmers/ranches who have need for lugging, towing or just drive around farms with roads that are not well laid. A regular off road capable suv costs a bunch and is huge and likely not as capable. People who need such a vehicle for farm work seem to use a UTV (Utility Terrain Vehicle) also called side by side (sxs) which are not street legal. But the issue with these seem to be that they can't lug a lot of weight and they break down easily. Though UTVs are more capable on absolute dirt tracks but the average farmer is not going to take his UTV to a dirt track to have fun.

Enter Mahindra Roxor. It addressed a market that is utilitarian but price conscious and want something that lasts looong, really really long. All metal body, leaf spring suspensions and the classic jeep look. They are marketing it as a side by side but it really is a jeep. It is not street legal, but many jurisdictions have relaxed rules about it and it can be made street legal with minor modifications. Also the engine is detuned at 62hp. But there are already businesses that can change the ecu to give more than 100 hp. And there are after market parts to make it more off road capable like in the video.

Mahindra really seems to have found a winner with Roxor and with market feed back and higher volumes, it probably could have made a street legal Roxor at the around the same cost. Imagine an original jeep that is cheap, can do your grunt work, go off roading and yet one you can drive around town. For many poor farmers who cannot afford a second car, this probably would be a very good deal. Some really good market study here.

But Mahindra lost the law suit recently with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, the current owner of the jeep brand, because the Roxor looks very similar to the original jeep and can no longer sell the Roxor in the US. I think Mahindra is reworking on the looks and is releasing a new version in 2021. But its a pity, it will not look like the jeep.

Mahindra’s Auburn Hills shop is struggling to meet demand and the company is considering adding a second shift.
At 148 inches, it’s a foot shorter than a subcompact Ford Fiesta hatchback, but it can tow 3,490 pounds — more than some luxury SUVs.

Roxor seemed to have opened up a significant market for aftermarket parts.

https://ontheroxfab.com/about-us
With the new arrival of the Mahindra Roxor, We started our On the Rox line of products and aftermarket accessories to meet the demand that these new machines are bringing.

Who ever came up with the idea for Roxor must be a very smart guy. Though the primary market must have been farmers and ranchers, it is finding a market for dirt trails and rock crawling. In many cases, it seems to be a dual purpose machine, for work and sport, after modifying it to make it more off road capable.

There is a lot of pent up demand from the past several months of lockdown. I think these are deliveries to dealers. Hopefully people get back to buying bikes and cars like they used to so that the demand sustains. The dealers are making that bet it seems. Now it all depends on how many the dealers are able to sell. That will reflect on how many deliveries the manufacturers make to them in the subsequent months.

Let's see if the demand keeps up. Between Dusshera and Diwali there are a lot of vehicle sales.

India saw record sales last month across the sectors in automobiles. This ofcourse was driven by the pent up demand but also the fear of using public transportation. Surprisingly, for the upper middleclass and even some sections of the middleclass the increase in savings due to this pandemic is resulting in an increase in discretionary spending, we are seeing this in white goods as well.

Looking at the sales numbers above i think the Indian auto market is now saturated. From Ford down to Nissan in the grid not sure how they are sustaining their business with such abysmal numbers.
