Indian Railways Thread (Dec 2015)
Re: Indian Railways Thread (Dec 2015)
India's new bullet trains will be customised to suit the subcontinent's climate conditions
"bullet trains even at 320 kmph. The E 5 Series Shinkansen will “compensate” for any roll and will also be modified to meet harsh Indian hot weather conditions and omnipresent dust."
“The environmental conditions in Japan are different. Initially, we thought we will bring the trains lock, stock and barrel since it’s time tested. But when we went into detail, we discovered that the temperature and dust conditions are creating a big difference. In our ambient temperature, we are asking for 55 degree centigrade; they design for 40 degree...15 degrees in air conditioning will make a big difference. The air conditioning equipment will be very heavy and they have very compact design. So, accommodating that increased equipment will be a challenge.”

Re: Indian Railways Thread (Dec 2015)
I thought this was Japan or Europe, but it's Gandhinagar Capital Railway Station, the first privately built station:

SWR on a roll.
1. Central air conditioning started and set at 23.5 C in the new terminal building Sir M. Visveswaraya terminal Bypannahalli.

2. Doubled and Electrified line commissioned between Yelahanka and Makalidurga,(36 km) speeds are a bit slow, only 75 kmph in the ghat section Oddarahalli to Makalidurga(one block section) and 90 kmph Yelahanka to Oddarahalli.

Coimbatore--Kurla exp. was the first train on new tracks. These tracks will alleviate system overloading between Bangalore to Mumbai and Bangalore to Delhi. Makalidurga to Devarapalli(next to Hindupur) (36 km) doubling and electrification was commissioned in April 2019.
Now left is Devarapalli to Penukonda(48 km) that SWR claims will be doubled and off course electrified by June this year. Video shows works between Devarapalli and Penukonda, track linking in many block sections. Penukonda---Anantapur---Dharmavaram----Gooty/Guntakal in SCR territory many sections are doubled already and doubling is going on well.

3. Hubbali yard now SSS Hubbali Jn. had a 2 month long yard re-modeling prior to doubling works that are finished between Guntakal ---Ballari---Hospet---Gadag----Hubli----Londa---Tinaighat. Electrification on this route will soon be over, RE is only left around Hubli for about 50km. South Bangalore to Hubli doubling is getting finished in a year and a half 100 km left and electrification here has reached Tumkur. So major changes had to made. The massive yard is now 6 times its original size. Due to space constraints they are building the longest platform in the world. Yard was commissioned yesterday.

Re: Indian Railways Thread (Dec 2015)
88 new Railway projects were dedicated to the nation few days ago by PM Modi. Numerous things like FOBs in Kerala and RUBS in Goa etc.
1. Important take aways Jhargram to Kalaikunda third line which was commissioned a few days ago, on the Kharagpur-Tatanagar east-west route will help in decongestion.
2. Long pending project on CR, 17 km third line between Itarsi and Nagpur in the ghats/Satpuras. Ruling gradient here between Chichonda and Teegaon is 1:65 which is quite steep and there are also catch sidings for run away trains. This is part of the Delhi to Chennai/Hyderabad third line project. Commissioned Dec 2020 also dedicated to the nation among the 88 projects.
3. RVNL has announced that Tunnel-5 in the Barkheda to Budni 23 km ghat section between Itarsi and Bhopal is through in the Ratapani tiger reserve. This will also carry the third line between Chennai and Delhi. Once this 23 km is finished(Tunnel 1 at 1085 m the longest is also done, 5 tunnels in all)
Bina to Itarsi is tripled a very big section of 240 km will be tripled, almost the entire section in WCR between Delhi and Chennai is tripled.
https://twitter.com/RailVikas/status/13 ... 3831402496
Tunnel-5 can carry two lines, possibly they might eliminate the famous Bulb ghat double line currently using a straighter alignment for lines 2 &3. Tripling is going on between Chennai and Delhi on its entire length and also in the dedication to the nation, PM Modi dedicated the 4th line Chennai Beach to Attipatu on the Chennai to Gudur section towards Delhi, Howrah and Hyderabad from Chennai which is very congested.

Suraji... This is nothing new. Search for Navi Mumbai railway stations and you will find them on a similar layout. Made of course nearly 2 decades ago by CIDCO.Suraj wrote:I thought this was Japan or Europe, but it's Gandhinagar Capital Railway Station, the first privately built station:

Re: Indian Railways Thread (Dec 2015)
Yes I know - I have family nearby in Vashi, Kopar Khairane, Nerul and elsewhere, and saw it when it was first built
However CIDCO built showpieces of the suburban rail of a planned city is different from a standard IR station in a tier 3 city, even a state capital. It’s good that IR is letting private companies do this - they don’t need to be in the business of building stations,

Really slick video from Alstom India about their contribution to the DFC work:
Lots of interesting drone visuals, and an inside view of the massive OCC in Prayagraj (nice of them to use that name correctly).

At least in DFC they have started off with the centralised signalling concepts. I wish the same would also be soon introduced in other sections as well. Even today IR uses a very old concept of sections & section controllers to monitor the movement of trains. For each and every train movement a station master generally calls up the section controller to confirm what has to be done with the train (run through?, detain? etc.). This is now becoming a bottle neck in routes which there is a train pretty much every 7-15 mins. This along with the need to close level crossings etc adds to the overall delay in running the train.
