vsunder, I had also suspected it. The website updates status semi-annually and there's been little other news around the project esp on EDFC. Sometimes you see disclosures by listed companies who win contracts.

Land acquisition could be one problem area but haven't heard statements about it. Hopefully, things will pickup in UP. East and West of that may still be a problem as they're all non-NDA states.

Pushing RUB's/ concrete boxes on an active track without introducing Alumino thermic welds (AT welds, remember Theo_Fidel's famous video of AT welds being done on IR):

https://twitter.com/DrmSolapur/status/8 ... 52/photo/1

This is in Solapur division. Of course there will be a line block and for electrified tracks a power block also, as there is a distinct possibility of the bulldozer and crane operator hitting 25KV HT wires while lifting concrete boxes into place.

A report on Western DFC in Hindi from an Ajmer TV station. Claims that by May 10th, tracks will start to be laid first from Marwar Jn to Rani (towards Abu Rd.) and between Marwar to Haripur(towards Ajmer).
All these head hardened rails will come from Japan.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmADji2yK5U

127 RUBs will be constructed and 13 ROB's in this section in Ajmer division. All Level crossings will be eliminated. As I have maintained that vernacular newspapers and TV channels are a fund of information.

There is significant lack of visbile progress on railway stations modernization. I have been following the Hong Kong/Japan model of leveraging prime real estate discussed many times on this thread, Surat is one such candidate. Although Habibganj has been kickstarted (at least based on news), the Surat case has been in limbo for far too long.

https://www.irsdc.com/projects/ongoing.html

I wonder what is preventing the progress, according to the project document, there is no encroachment in the planned area.

^^^^
In reading the data above note that what is being stated is track kms. Thus the real geographical distance for which track linking has been achieved is half the amount stated in the report. This is called route kms. Normally when IR constructs a new line, it will be single line at first and so track and route kms coincide, but DFC being double at the very beginning, track kms will be double route kms. For example if they say taking an example that Bhaupur(Kanpur)-Khurja track linking of 196kms has been achieved, it simply means that they have constructed a double line in that section between two points that are 98km apart. Bhaupur to Khurja is 343km, so 686 track kms. They plan to finish this section by Dec 2018. NTC machines started to lay track in late Oct 2015, when I saw them at work on that section. So in 1.8 years this is the progress and they have 1.8 years left and blanketing and earthwork construction still on at this late stage as per this newsletter with incomplete formations not upto level as per this newsletter.

Ditto for Rewari(Haryana) to Iqbalgadh(Gujarat) the two are 641 km apart so track kms is 1282kms. Out of which they have completed 222 track kms or 111 route kms ^^^. They plan to hand over Ateli-Phulera sub-section by March 2018 which is 196 route kms by March 2018 in this section. They have to put in poles, do the signalling work, communication work, test these very long sections and then commission. They are implementing new technologies like EOTT, SCADA systems on railways and so on for the first time in India and so there will be teething problems. On WDFC they have extra long catenary, for double decker containers. We shall see. When nowhere in the report is it made clear that what they refer to is track kms, then people are being disingenuous. The Adesh Sharma guy in the report is now gone and one Ayushman Sharma has come in, musical chairs with Sharmas'.

Track kms will also count loop lines in yards, but OK I am ignoring that, the actual route kms will be less than the 111kms I have alluded to above for example.

Regarding OHE work from the newsletter about Ateli-Phulera sub-section to be commissioned March 2018:
576 foundations done for poles on this WDFC section. Okay lets calculate. 196 km double track, forget loop lines in yards, loop lines will be 40km apart. In IR poles are 15 to a km. So this means between Ateli and Phulera you need 5880 poles So boss you have put in less than 10% poles You have less than a year to finish and then wiring. Total ullu banaoing.

OHE foundation work is partially mechanized on the DFC, however there is a human element also, like a man who has to measure the depth of the hole using a tape measure. The auger is based on a truck that moves on the rails. Here is a short video that gives an idea how OHE work is being done on the EDFC.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M27lEhBSZ60

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yv8dHj4NSo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWDQSgCaZps

Note the two IR tracks which are electrified in the background. The two DFC tracks that are not. And the truck carries UP registration plates UP 45. Also supervisory staff wear purple helmets and slaves, yellow helmets.

on the recent spate of derailments ..Niti Ayog has said that almost 85% of derailments were on account of technical reasons ( track health, signalling)+ human factors. not sure if i read this in a newspaper or online. max derailments on delhi-Howrah sector which is in a bad shape.

Aam Abdul pooch alert

I was seeing some old interview video on youtube of Suresh Prabhu by a regional Channel the other day. IIRC he mentioned that IR will be fully electrified in coming few years. I am thinking, if so, why are we setting up new GE plant for Diesel locos now..? We already must be having few thousand diesel locos in IR fleet, right?? Why and where all these diesel locos are to be used, if majority of railways, if not all is gonna be electrified soon..?

Take it fwiw. From a railway board relative of mine. Her view of this Govt especially railway ministry is that there is too much hype and lot of media mgmt by Mr. Prabhu. Visible improvements on the ground are because political interference is very less when compared to the days of Laloo, mamta etc. and no major drive from them. Mr Prabhu is pretty dictatorial manangement type and does not listen to even sensitive babus. Lot of ground level staff, gangmen, time keepers etc are getting trimmed but the there is lot of fat in offices. The force on the ground are quite stressed. Her view is that steps to control corruption has made life difficult for straight forward people while corrupt guys are still enjoying. Major possible reforms are not taken. Fudging of books continues to happen unabated.BTE, she is from a long term Sanghi and her dad was in BIA, then in RSS. She was a fan of Modi earlier.

That looks like a 2018 completion. Here are some more projects that are in stages of completion. Real progress in 6 months as seen on Google Earth.

1. All spans on bridge across Godavari in place, Mancherial. Third line Delhi-Chennai. Bridge is between
Ballaharshah-Kazipet and in a region of many collieries(Singareni) and Super thermal plant at Ramagundam.

18.839304, 79.441649

2. All spans complete, bridge across Tungabhadra, Hospet-Hubbali-Londa-Mormugoa doubling project:

15.301835, 76.350675

On this doubling project, doubling commissioned between Londa and Alnavar and many more sections opening up.

3. Span launching in advanced stage, across Krishna River, Ugar Khurd, Karnataka, Miraj-Londa doubling

16.637619, 74.853425

The existing bridge that can be seen is about 140 years old.

4. Bangalore-Hindupur-Penukonda doubling for Bangalore-Guntakal doubling, earthworks at advanced stage for commissioning for Thondebhavi-Hindupur 45km section. I just marked a section at Gauribiddanur near Bangalore. This 45km section to be commissioned by March 2018.

13.627623, 77.515867

The difficulty here is Makalidurga ghat, near Bangalore where earthworks have just started as on Google earth.

5. Chennai-Madurai will be fully doubled and electrified (FEDL) by Sept 2017, only a 23km section left for doubling.
LA problems had held this section up.

6. Guntakal-Wadi is fully electrified and doubled and Prabhu inaugurated the first e-loco a few weeks ago. Mumbai-Chennai section.

7. Also Jabalpur-Gondia is coming along with gauge conversion. For 21 years this project has languished till Modi. Now Jabalpur-Ghunsore commissioned and the rest at advanced stage with commissioning of GC of entire section by middle of next year. This will provide an alternative to Bihar, Varanasi from South India, bypassing Itarsi. The entire Satpura narrow gauge system is under megablock for gauge conversion by late next year.

8. Doubling of Hotgi(Solapur)-Gadag. This will help the upcoming super thermal plant at Kudgi, Karnataka.
50km section on this line will be commissioned next March. Piers across the Bhima river ready for spans for second line:

17.336337, 75.981929

Kudgi Super thermal plant for which this double line is needed for bringing coal rakes. Kudgi station with 2 loop lines is commissioned.

16.496808, 75.842747

Hotgi station bypass line newly commissioned to bypass Hotgi for coal rakes to Kudgi(notice the rail over rail flyover)

17.556680, 75.997998

Hotgi-Bijapur-Kudgi-Gadag doubling fast-tracked by Modi, doubling earthworks at Khanapur(Karnataka)

17.371699, 75.978561

Ugar Khurd, Krishna bridge at eye level a few months ago/compare with Google Earth

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1Id5_KvNr0

Miraj-Londa doubling has started eye level:

To the great list above, I would just add the new bridge across the Bhagirathi in West Bengal, between Murshidabad and Azimganj. This would open up a new double line track to north Bengal in addition to the current track via Rampurhat.

This bridge is ready; the holdup was the approach track to the bridge on the south bank due to land acquisition issues. That has now been sorted out by the state govt. Eastern Railway has made press announcements about running the legendary Darjeeling Mail on this route before 2017 is out.
The bridge and the new rail line will also help with mobilization of units in the XVII Corps with some of them being on this line

Maybe this is true for operations aspect. But as far as new projects are concerned, pace of execution is unmatched wrt post independence period. Suresh Prabhu is doing fine there. Manoj Sinha is also a very good leader.

My firm is currently engaged with IR in Grievance Redressal. As per the Senior Babus I have met, Suresh Prabhu is different and really want to do something for the railways unlike Lalu, who as per him used to just crack jokes during the meeting and his chamchas would hanker the babus for posting of their relatives/tender managements.

Complains by passengers are being seriously evaluated, in fact met guys from Prabhu's social media team, they say everyday Prabhu looks at the dashboard for numbers around grievance/escalation etc. and every week some zonal babu gets blasted by him if numbers of redressal are not good.

Diesel Loco Works (DLW) having no say in GE locos manf for India (how long with WDG4/WDP4 series manufacturing will continue?), it has taken to manufacturing/assembling WAP7 electric loco!

Apparently, this is the first WAP7 loco assembled by DLW named Varun now tasked with hauling Mumbai Raj!

I think we are also buying high horsepower (9,000 or 12,000 HP) electric locos from Japan for freight duties especially on the DFCs. Perhaps it will be assembled in India by a Pvt entity like GE locos. Good that another parallel private entities are coming up. The work standards of Govt factories (DLW, CLW, various rail coaches etc.) does not really point out to good workman ship!

Part of me hopes that IR will adopt the existing stealth grey livery on GE locos. IMO looks better than the garish red-yellow combination. But I guess, the grey is no go because of visibility issues...it is hard to make out a grey loco hurling towards an individual at great speed from a distance.

I think one of the problems currently in IR is the speed at which a train is able to get up to track speed. Since IR runs trains which are usually around 18 coaches, many a times hauled by a single loco. This causes congestion. Contrast that to local trains that operate in Mumbai...they are able to get up to track speed very quickly. IR wants to see if they can implement this solution on the mainline i.e. spread the traction motors at various coaches and have a quick acceleration and eliminate current set up of trains (at least for short distances < 500 Kms). The max speed they are targeting is 160 Kph. The latest tender is for the same and I am not sure how many have answered it, but one of them is Rail Coach Factory (?) from Chennai. First proto is targeted to roll out by April-June 2018.

PM Modi, Abe likely to flag off bullet train project in September
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu is targeting commissioning of the project by 2023-24

Come September, the Narendra Modi government will take the first step to make bullet train a reality in India, with help from Japan.

Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe are likely to take part in the bhoomi poojan and foundation stone laying ceremony of the Rs 97,636-crore Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor project.
This train will be based on Japanese high-speed technology called Shinkansen, known for its safety and comfort. The high-speed train would cover the 508 km between Mumbai and Ahmedabad in two hours, from seven hours now.

Though such traditions are followed while starting major projects in India, this could be for the first time that a global leader will be participating in one such event.

“A bhoomi poojan and foundation stone laying ceremony will be in September. However, the date is yet to be confirmed,” said a source close to the development.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu is targeting the commissioning of the project by 2023-24.

Bullet train Source: Indian Railways In February 2016, a special purpose vehicle National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd was formed to implement the elevated Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor project. The Japanese government has agreed to provide a loan of up to 81 per cent of the project cost at 0.1 per cent per annum, to be repaid in 50 years with a 15-year moratorium. The project was sanctioned with 50 per cent equity participation by the railway ministry and 25 per cent each by the governments of Maharashtra and Gujarat.

The originating station in Mumbai would be at the Bandra Kurla Complex. There would be 12 stations on the route. The Indian Railways has been working on a multi-pronged strategy for running of high-speed trains (with speeds of 300 kmph) and semi-high-speed trains (with speeds of 160-200 kmph).

In addition to the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed corridor, five more corridors are being explored; Delhi-Mumbai, Mumbai-Chennai, Delhi-Kolkata, Delhi-Nagpur and Mumbai-Nagpur corridors. Trains on these corridors will cross 300 kmph.

Japan pushes for Bengaluru-Chennai high-speed rail

Bengaluru, Jun 18 (DHNS): Japan has reiterated its keenness to take up the high-speed train project between Bengaluru and Chennai.

Japan’s Ambassador to India Kenji Hiramatsu, who met Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday, stated that Japan was keen to expand the high-speed rail network in India.

Hiramatsu was in Bengaluru to participate in the launch of the Green Line of Namma Metro. The ambassador discussed the progress and implementation of several projects in Bengaluru taken up utilising funds from financial institutions in Japan.

Japan uses the Shinkansen bullet train technology which is proposed to be utilised for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed train.
I always thought it's a low hanging fruit for HSR between two of the largest Indian cities.

China must be feeling leftout from indian HSR projects. If things go right the indian HSR projects alone can be as much as the entire CPEC in the same time frame. Modi has shown Xi true eleven fingers. CCTV (china central tv) had a documentary on how china got german HSR technology initially then "improved" on it.. i. e stole it.

Japanese are investing in Chennai Bang Industrial Corridor, therefore, they have additional incentive to fund the HSR. Once the expressway is built, they just need to build viaducts on the side for HSR.

OT, but even phase II funding is from various sources - some innovative funding model (by the companies themselves) is being touted for the ORR line, never mind that the ORR generates a good chunk of BLR's IT-vity income, and they still have to shell out for the metro. Bakras they all are.

The length of Uthrathiya-Varanasi route is 271 Km long, of which only 212 Km of route track has been doubled up while the work of rest Chandrauli-Adheenpur route length of 58.66 km is under way. The construction of second route track on these lines will reduce the traffic on outer sections of Charbagh railway station. As of now, trains have to wait for the route clearance. It eventually adversely affects the traffic on the Lucknow-Kanpur-Delhi and Lucknow-Bareilly-Delhi routes as well.

Bilaspur-Manali-Leh line: World's highest rail track survey to commence
The Railways will kick off the final location survey of the 498 km long Bilaspur-Manali-Leh line at Leh in Jammu and Kashmir this week.
Coming up at a high of 3,300 metres, the strategically important rail project is touted to become the highest rail track in the world, overtaking China's Qinghai-Tibet Railway. The all-weather Leh rail network is one of the four important railway connectivities identified by the defence ministry along the China border.Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu will inaugurate the work for the final location survey on June 27 at an estimated cost of Rs 157.77 crore. The survey is funded by the defence ministry. The proposed new rail line will connect all important locations between Bilaspur and Leh namely Sunder Nagar Mandi, Manali, Tandi, Keylong, Koksar, Darcha, Upshi and Karu. The final location survey has been entrusted to RITES, a Railways PSU."RITES has deployed its expert team to carry out this challenging task. The survey will be carried out in three phases and is slated to be completed by 2019," said a senior Railway Ministry official.Presently, the road route is open only for about five months in a year.Apart from strategic considerations, the line connecting Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh to Leh in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir is expected to give immense "socio-economic benefits" to the region, including tourism. The defence ministry had initiated rail line projects along China, Nepal and Pakistan borders as strategic lines.Fourteen strategic lines have been identified, out of which four - Bilaspur-Manali-Leh, Missamari-Tenga-Tawang, North Lakhimpur-Bame-Silapathar and Pasighat-Tezu-Rupai - will be taken up in the first phase. The Bilaspur-Manali-Leh line is along Himachal-J&K border and the last three lines along Assam-Arunachal border.Once the Bilaspur-Manali-Leh railway line is completed, Leh will be directly connected to Himachal Pradesh and the rest of India by railway.Personnel and equipment will be transported more easily to the strategic military base of Leh with the commissioning of the line.

Germany to study Chennai-Bengaluru-Mysuru rail route

New Delhi, Jun 28 (PTI) Known for its expertise in the high speed rail sector, Germany will conduct a feasibility study for running trains at a speed of about 300 kmph on the 450 km long Chennai?Bengaluru?Mysuru route.
Germany has appointed a consortium of consultants comprising DB E&C, Intraplan Consult and Ingenieurbüro Vössing to carry out the study in the southern region.
Germany will bear the cost of the year-long study involving exact location, ridership, opportunities, and challenges among other issues and submit the report.
A pre-feasibility study of this section has been completed by the German side in 2016 and now they are keen to do a feasibility study, said a senior Railway Ministry official involved with the high speed rail project.
India had signed a joint declaration of intent in October 2015 on the development of cooperation in rail sector between German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure and the Indian Railways during the visit of the German Chancellor to India.
The German side had indicated willingness for a feasibility study on High Speed Rail (HSR) in India in the joint declaration.
During the visit of Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu to Germany in April 2016, a protocol was signed with German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure to intensify cooperation in rail sector. One of the areas mentioned in the protocol is high speed rail. It was decided during the bilateral meeting that Germany will conduct feasibility study for high speed rail of Chennai? Bengalure-Mysuru section with their finances.
The German Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure Alexander Dobrindt visited India and met with Prabhu in October 2016.
Both leaders discussed and agreed to work expeditiously on the feasibility study for HSR of Chennai?Bengaluru?Mysuru, he said.
In order to carry out the study, workshops have been organised by consultants at Chennai and Bengaluru this month to interact with zonal authorities and to understand regional requirements. As part of study, a workshop is scheduled to be organised tomorrow where consultants will interact with officials of the Railway Ministry. PTI ARU DV

11 Types Of Horns And What They Mean In Indian Railways.

1. One short horn
A small horn means the motorman would take the train in the yard where it would be washed and cleaned for its next trip.

2. Two short horns
When the motorman gives two smaller horns, he is signalling the guard to ask railway signal for starting the train.

3. Three smaller horns
Motormen rarely press the horns thrice because if they do, it means they have lost control over the motor and that the guard has to immediately pull the vacuum break.

4. Four smaller horns
The four smaller horns denote that there is a ‘technical’ issue with the train and that the train would not go ahead.

5. One long horn and a shorter one
This horn means that the motorman is signalling the guard to set the brake pipe system before they start the engine.

6. Two long horns and two short horns
The motorman is signalling the guard to take control of the engine.

7. A continuous horn
A continuous horn is blown for alerting the passengers that the train is passing non-stop through many stations.

8. Two horns with two pauses
This signal is to alert the passersby that the train would be running through a railway crossing.

9. Two long and short horns
If the motorman blows these horns, it means the train is changing the tracks.

10. Two short and one long horn
This sound means that a passenger has pulled a chain or the guard has pulled a vacuum break.

11. Six times, short horns
It’s a trouble signal where the train is stuck in a dangerous situation.

but it still looks like grandpa days - style, color, no glass windows, etc. :D

- they can definitely do away with that hanging chains, and improve space [use them to the side wall rather hanging from top, saves space and material]
- redo the windows
- change the fans, lightings, etc.

they should slowly go for modern coaches
