Lots of medal possibilities today.

Men's hockey bronze game against Germany.
Ravi Kumar wrestling 57kg final against the 2018 and 2019 world champ Russia's Zaur Uguev, the Dagestani monster. Ravi lost to Uguev 4-6 in the 2019 world championship semifinal.
As a losing semifinalist, Deepak Punia has a solitary repechage fight to win to get bronze in 86kg. Anshu Malik will win bronze if she wins two repechage matches in 57kg womens.

Vinesh Phogat starts today. Lets see if she can emulate Ravi and get into the final too. She's the top seed.

Indian wrestler Ravi Kumar Dahiya gets bitten by Kazakhstan athlete while competing to reach finals of Tokyo Olympics

However, Dahiya had to endure a brutal bite on his arm to reach the historic win. In the last few seconds of the semi-finals match, when Ravi Dahiya was attempting a pin down Sanayev, the Kazakhstan wrestler bit him hard on his right arm leaving quite severe injury marks.
The shocking act was recorded on camera, which later went viral on the internet.

Yes, I am aware of that. I was asking about the disciplinary procedures against a player behaving like this. Like a fine, suspension, disqualification from a few upcoming contests, etc.

Mildly disappointing that Deepak Punia couldn't win his repechage bout to get another bronze. Vinesh was a huge disappointment. Top seed and she was at least to make semifinal, but instead lost QF and then her opponent lost in semifinal so no repechage for her.

Now the only hope is Bajrang will win gold. Ravi Kumar looked completely unsatisfied with his silver and that's a good thing. Apparently he got very little sleep overnight because he was 3-4kg over the weight class after the first day of competition and had to spend hours in the gym to cut weight for the final to avoid a DQ. That left him exhausted in the final. The wrestlers do not like that the final is the next day since they have to maintain weight for two days rather than one. Hope he wins gold in Paris 2024.

Aditi Ashok remains in 2nd place after the 2nd of 4 rounds of golf (36 of 72 holes). Shockingly strong performance so far. The day 1 leader from Sweden performed badly on day 2 but Aditi has remained consistent. Another 2 days of the same eye-opening performance please, girl!

I think the match referee ruled it as inadvertent. Although how anyone can inadvertently bite another wrestler in the course of a match is something that defies understanding.

Typhoon and chance of heavy rain. I believe the next round is scheduled at 6:30 local time. If it doesn't rain, then round 4 will happen.

Like AshishA said, there’s very bad weather bearing down, and this has been known for a while. As any Japanese will tell you, July-August is typhoon season . In fact, the nation did a collective ‘what are you thinking ?’ when the decision was made to hold it in July-Aug, the worst time of year in Tokyo. The 1964 Olympics were held in October, but now TV rights mean a mid summer scheduling.

The American world #1 and Aditi are the only golfers to play consistently for 3 rounds now. If Rd 4 is cancelled she immediately gets silver medal. If it’s played, she needs to play as consistently as she’s done in Rd 1-3 .

Rajeev Gandhi Khel Ratna Awards Is Now Major Dhyanchand Khel Ratna Awards

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Friday announced that the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award will now be known as the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, “respecting the sentiments of citizens across the country”. The Khel Ratna award is the highest sporting honour in the nation.

“I have been getting many requests from citizens across India to name the Khel Ratna Award after Major Dhyan Chand. I thank them for their views. Respecting their sentiment, the Khel Ratna Award will hereby be called the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award! Jai Hind!” Prime Minister Modi tweeted.

The Khel Ratna award was instituted in 1991-1992 and the first recepient was Chess legend Viswanathan Anand. Among the other winners were Leander Paes, Sachin Tendulkar, Dhanraj Pillay, Pullela Gopichand, Abhinav Bindra, Anju Bobby George, Mary Kom and Rani Rampal in 2020.

The now renamed Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award comes with a cash prize of Rs 25 lakh.

Not surprisingly, Bajrang is out in semifinals after two scratchy wins. He's still in contention for a medal if he wins his repechage bout. What a disappointment . He and Vinesh were both bets for finals and instead there's at most a bronze from the two of them combined.

The only real high value medal hopes now are Aditi Ashok and Neeraj Chopra, both due on Saturday.

Even if there are puddles, its an adequate reason to cancel round 4.
Aditi's performance has been as good as is unexpected. In the Ladies PGA, she has not been consistent over 4 rounds.

Tbh Bajrang had a knee injury just before the Olympics. I hope he wins Bronze.

This is the man to whom Indian hockey is indebted. It would have been impossible without him. Credit where it is due.

He majorly sponsored both the Men's and the Women's teams and built state of the art infrastructure for them.

Until now, very few people even knew about his sustained commitment to the two teams

Atleast some of the bigger states take onus to support one sport and build facilities and sponsor that will go along way.
For example Haryana to build facilities for Wrestling
Bengal to promote Football
Maharashtra/Goa for sailing/Swimming
One of the hill states for long distance middle distance runners a la Ethiopia style
Bangalore always had lots of swimming pools so junior level/school level talent
North east for Boxing/weightlifting/Archery
I mean possibilities are endless but is their a will or do we keep talking politics.

naveen patnaik is a politician from the opposition. He has done this of his own volition, and also not made any song and dance about his contribution and nor will he do so. Maybe yogi is another who may do something like this and on similar lines too.

A lot of the rest are simply thieves, thugs and non starters

The example is already set. He had not sought permission, nor had he asked for "aid" to sponsor the teams. It was all money, land, other resources from the state of orissa.

I don't even know if orissa was represented in either of the two teams.

Shameful of amarinder singh to claim credit some sikhs scoring goals. That fat lump from the rancid arthiya gang had zero contribution and yet he slyly pounced at the opportune moment to take the credit thinking that he would share in the limelight.

Such an option was always open to all the states but only Patnaik was far sighted enough to use the state's resources to make good on the chance of doing something good for India.

OT, but because of the very good vibes that Patnaik has generated, has a very dark horse just emerged for the post of VP, President, whatever

There was just no way of anyone knowing that both the Women's and the Men's hockey teams would do as phenomenally well as they did and generate the massive national interest that they also did, so Patnaik's actions could not have been motivated by personal or even political gain.

He is politically sober and also has a clean image, so no one can point fingers at him for all the usual reasons.

He has stayed politically neutral and at arm's length from all parties and ideologies.

Proposing / electing Patnaik to a constitutional post will unhorse many of the "me too" contenders and may make many opposition players to break ranks by sowing dissention and also splitting votes.

It’s been rescheduled to 630am instead of the usual 730am start . But there’s a 90% chance of heavy rain anyway .

The official notice. 54 holes are done already and Aditi is 2nd with a -12 card to world #1 Nelly Korda who has a -15. Aditi is ranked #200. Third place is -10, two shots more than Aditi. She has a low risk game with a focus on excellent putting, which is good for windy conditions that may happen in Rd 4. Long hitters face more problems from the wind causing them to go off the green.
