Some details on the attack and the attackers.

Arrested terrorist says gang hoped to get away

NEW DELHI: The gang of terrorists who wreaked mayhem in Mumbai for three days were made to believe by their Lashkar bosses that they were not
being sent on a suicide mission and that they would be coming back alive.

In a sensational disclosure made by Ajmal, the jihadi nabbed alive by Mumbai cops, the group had planned to sail out on Thursday. Their recruiters had even charted out the return route for them and stored it on the GPS device which they had used to navigate their way to the Mumbai shoreline.

This suggests that the terrorists were willing to undertake a mission which they knew would be very risky, but not necessarily suicidal.

Sources said that the bait of safe return must have been used by the recruiters to convince the wavering among the group to join the audacious plot against Mumbai.

Ajmal made another important disclosure: that all terrorists were trained in marine warfare along with the special course Daura-e-Shifa conducted by the Lashkar-e-Taiba in what at once transforms the nature of the planning from a routine terror strike and into a specialized raid by commandos.

Battle-hardened ATS officials are surprised by the details of the training the terrorists were put through before being despatched for the macabre mission. This was very different from a terrorist attack, and amounted to an offensive from the seam, said a source.

Ajmal has revealed the name of his fellow jihadis all Pakistani citizens as Abu Ali, Fahad, Omar, Shoaib, Umer, Abu Akasha, Ismail, Abdul Rahman (Bara) and Abdul Rahman (Chhota).

The account of Ajmal also strengthens the doubt of the complicity of powerful elements in the Pakistani establishment. According to him, the group set off on November 21 from an isolated creek near Karachi without the deadly cargo of arms and ammunition they were to use against the innocents in Mumbai. The group received arms and ammunition on board a large Pakistani vessel which picked them up the following day. The vessel, whose ownership is now the subject of an international probe, had four Pakistanis apart from the crew.

A day later, they came across an Indian-owned trawler, Kuber, which was promptly commandeered on the seas. Four of the fishermen who were on the trawler were killed, but its skipper, or tandel in fishermen lingo, Amarjit Singh, was forced to proceed towards India. Amarjit was killed the next day, and Ismail the terrorist who was killed at Girgaum Chowpaty took the wheel.

A trained sailor, Ismail used the GPS to reach Mumbai coast on November 26. The group, however, slowed down its advance as they had reached during the day time while the landing was planned after dusk. The group shifted to inflatable boats, before disembarking at Badhwar Park in Cuffe Parade.

From there, they mandated to kill indiscriminately, particularly white foreign tourists, and spare Muslims split up into five batches. Two of them Ismail and Ajmal took a taxi to Victoria Terminus. Three other batches of two each headed for Oberoi Hotel, Cafe Leopold and Nariman House. The remaining four went to Taj Hotel.

He may have been motivated enough to kill innocents indiscriminately. In police custody, Ajmal Amir Kasab, the terrorist who was caught alive by
the Mumbai police at Girgaum Chowpatty, has been forthcoming with details about the attack on Mumbai and his accomplices, all suspected Lashkar operatives from Pakistan.

Kasab, who sustained minor injuries in the police firing that killed his partner Abu Ismail (25) on Wednesday night, was produced before the Esplanade Metropolitan Magistrate on Friday. The magistrate remanded him to police custody till December 8. Incidentally, Kasab and Ismail were the two who gunned down ATS chief Hemant Karkare, additional CP Ashok Kamthe and encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar.

Kasab told the police that he and 9 others got off a vessel about 10 nautical miles from Mumbai and shifted to two boats hijacked from fishermen.

One source in ATS familiar with the details of the interrogation quoted him saying that in all 16 fidayeens came to Mumbai on Wednesday. A native of Faridkot in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), 21-year-old Kasab told police they had done a reccee of Mumbai few months ago. He said he had come along with eight of the operatives to Mumbai as students and lived in a rented room at Colaba market, a stone's throw away from Nariman House chalo badhiya hai another feather in the cap of GOI  .

1. TOI.. should have made this a main story and chosen a more apt headline .
2. GOI and ATS should call a formal press conference and make sure above story gets major air time.

Now that action is over, it is time to reflect, collect and analyze the intelligence. Also analyze media action.

First Salute those brave hearts who laid down their lives in the line of the duty.

Major Unnikrishnan, ATS Chief Hemant Karkare and Havildar G Singh last rites are being conducted as I type these words.

...So are funerals of 155 innocent citizens of India and other countries.

News reports indicate that Primeminister refused to meet Paki FM yesterday. (BBC)

Folks - Let me extend thanks to the majority of posters who posted very responsibily and limited themselves to the issues at hand. You have all made the Moderators job a bit easier with your level headed analysis and responsible posting. So THANK YOU once again

However I would like to post a reminder for those who didnt. who indulged in objectionable language, often breaking the forum guidelines, inspite of repeated reminders. The Moderator team have been fairly liberal in not warning posters and just limiting themselves to editing objectionable posts. However the same allowance wont be extended to this iteration.

In short, posts that are not in line with the guidelines of the forum will get a warning. accumulate three of those on your record and they will get a time out. I would hate to see any member lose his posting privilages. But a a crisis like this cannot be an excuse for us to lose our mental balance and post like insane people

So I request you to please self-moderate your own posts. Think twice and thrice before you hit the submit button

I update my earlier post:

  • The training was for a period of at least 3 months in Pakistan and these are LeT operatives
  • The Pakistani Maritime authorities helped in charting out routes including the return path, all crammed into their navigation equipment
  • The terrorists started from a remote creek near Karachi and after a day out in the sea, were picked up by a Pakistani mothership
  • the terrorists came near Porbandar where they then commandeered an Indian trawler, eliminated the fisherman and ordered the captain to take them to Sasoon Docks.
  • They spent almost 4 days on this trawler, possibly waiting for some signal to reach Mumbai
  • They were picked up from there by some others, possibly Indians.
  • They split into at least three groups, one went to CST from where the Versace terrorist who is now spilling the beans was captured. This group also killed the ATS chief
  • Some terrorists had already occupied the Taj and moved in explosives much earlier (possibly, the same happened in Oberoi but not yet confirmed)
  • The corner first floor room in the Taj had been converted into the ops room by the terrorists
  • The idea was to enact a 'JW Marriott' of the Taj & Trident

Cnn still interviewing Reza Sayeh crying that the Indians always point to pakistan without evidence. Says pakistan offering full condolences and interviews with prime minister confirming the same. Warns anything but collaboration and dual understanding of terrorism will lead to face off between two nuclear powers. Common pakis on the streets offering condolences and saying pakistan had nothing to do with it. Fact that pakistan is needed for the war on terror in FATA.

Guys if there's any doubt as to if the US is pro India or pro pakis...I think this is it....again...not one person has come on to express the Indian view effectively apart from brief edited thank you's for the commando's from the victims themselves....

Damage control for India's actions, started from the moment we hinted it could be pakistan. The US media has been hitting their points in full flow with the big guns being wolf blitzer, christian amanpour, Reza Sayeh etc.

The silverlining .....

US, UK, Israel ramp up intelligence aid to India
28 Nov 2008, 2320 hrs IST, Chidanand Rajghatta, TNN

WASHINGTON: Unprecedented intelligence cooperation involving investigating agencies and spy outfits of India, United States, United Kingdom and Israel has got underway to crack the method and motive behind the Mumbai terrorist massacre, now widely blamed on Islamist radicals who appeared to have all four countries on their hit list when they arrived on the shores of India.

Investigators, forensic analysts, counter-terrorism experts and spymasters from agencies the four countries are converging in New Delhi and Mumbai to put their heads, resources, and skills together to understand the evolving nature of the beast. The spy chief of the Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence(ISI) is also being summoned to India to help with the investigations because of the widely-held view that the terrorists' footprints go back to Pakistan. ( Watch )

The Bush administration has taken the lead to forge cooperation, partly out of concern that charges by India that the terror plot has Pakistani fingerprints could setback fast-improving government-to-government and people-to-people ties between the two countries, officials said.

But there is an implicit recognition both in New Delhi and Washington, and also other world capitals, that Pakistan's hard-line Army and its spy agency are spoilers of the honeymoon between the civilian governments and the people of India and Pakistan. Hence the summons to the country's chief spook, Ahmad Shuja Pasha, an acolyte of the new Army Chief Pervez Kiyani, himself a former ISI chief.

President Bush, who spent Thanksgiving Thursday at Camp David, monitored the developments in Mumbai along with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who joined him for dinner. Bush also spoke to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh offering all U.S help.

In fact, CNN reported that Washington suggested sending US Special Forces for on-the-ground operations in Mumbai but New Delhi declined the offer, saying its own forces could take care of the situation. The report could not be separately verified although officials acknowledged cooperation in investigations and intelligence sharing.

The Bush administration is also keeping President-elect Barack Obama up-to-speed on the fast moving developments. Obama spoke with Secretary Rice by phone to get an update on the situation in Mumbai. Additionally, his transition office said, the President-elect received an intelligence briefing on the attacks.

The President-elect is also receiving regular situational updates from the State Department Ops Center and the National Counter Terrorism Center (NCTC), an Obama spokesperson added.

The multi-nation intelligence cooperation has been precipitated in part by the death of Americans, Britons, and Israelis, in the carnage. Thousands of Indians have died in terror attacks in India in the previous two decades without the world getting exercised about it, but the manner in which the terrorists who attacked Mumbai are reported to have singled out Americans and Britons, besides pointedly occupying a Jewish center, has revealed that their agenda was wider than just domestic discontent or the Kashmir issue.

Some unconfirmed reports also speak of at least two of the terrorists being British nationals of Pakistani origin, of the kind who were involved in the London underground bombing. Their attire (cargo pants and t-shirts), their heavy weaponry, and the sophisticated nature of their attack, certainly goes far beyond anything local or indigenous terror groups have displayed so far.

More significantly, none of the local groups have targeted Americans, Britons, and Israelis with the kind of specific intent as the current set of terrorists did. While US officials are concerned about the possibility of the new warmth in ties between India and Pakistan dissipating because of the gravity of the charges from New Delhi, there is also a recognition and acknowledgment that India's anger is directed against the hard-line elements in the Pakistani Army and its surrogates in the ISI, and not the civilian government or the people of Pakistan.

In fact, Washington itself has been trying to get Pakistan's civilian government to get a grip on the ISI, which many believe is now infiltrated by rogue elements.

That joint effort by Washington and the civilian dispensation in Islamabad has been repeatedly thwarted by Pakistan's hard-line army which believes it is the custodian and guarantor of the Islamist ideology that keep Pakistan intact and differentiates it from India, and which the ISI as its fighting arm for a covert asymmetrical war against India. Pakistan's new President Asif Ali Zardari recently attracted the wrath of the hardliners by saying "there is a little bit of India inside every Pakistani" and presenting a no-first-use of nuclear weapons proposal to India.

The Bush administration has only lately begun to realise that the ISI is a different beast from the one which helped it defeat the Soviet Union in Afghanistan to end the Cold War. The first sign that the ISI had turned rogue came during 9/11 when Pakistan's spy chief who was tasked to go and ask the Taliban to surrender did exactly the opposite. India's mistrust of ISI has a longer history, with the nadir coming during the Kargil war.

But under withering scrutiny from the international community, Pakistan, which is desperately broke and begging for international aid and loans, has agreed to send the ISI chief to New Delhi with promise of cooperation. That promise will be tested in the coming days and weeks.

I want to live: Captured terrorist Azam
29 Nov 2008, 0959 hrs IST, MUMBAI MIRROR

Print EMail Discuss Share Save Comment Single page view Text:
MUMBAI: His swaggering image as he walked around Chhatrapati Shivaji terminus dispensing death was captured by Mumbai Mirror photo editor

Sebastian D' souza, and was the first glimpse of the terrorists who have held Mumbai hostage over the last 48 hours.

Now we can also tell you who this man is and how he has become the vital link for investigating agencies to crack the terror plot.

His name is Azam Amir Kasav, he is 21 years old, speaks fluent English, hails from tehsil Gipalpura in Faridkot in Pakistan, and is the only terrorist from this audacious operation to have been captured alive.

An ATS spokesperson confirmed that the man captured was indeed the one photographed by us.

On the night of Wednesday-Thursday Azam and his colleague opened fire at CST before creating havoc at Metro and then moving on to Girgaum Chowpatty in a stolen Skoda, and where they were intercepted by a team from the Gamdevi police station . Azam shot dead assistant police inspector Tukaram Umbale.

But in that encounter Azam's colleague was killed and he himself was injured in the hand. He pretended to be dead giving rise to the news that two terrorists had been killed. However as the 'bodies' were being taken to Nair Hospital, the accompanying cops figured that one of the men was breathing.

Ammunition, a satellite phone and a layout plan of CST was recovered from him. According to sources the young terrorist has given the investigators vital leads including how the chief planner of the Mumbai terror plot had come to the city a month ago, took picture and filmed strategic locations and trained their group and instructed them to "kill till the last breath." Every man was given six to seven magazines with fifty bullets each, eight hand grenades per terrorist with one AK-57 , an automaticloading revolver and a supply of dry fruits.

Azam reportedly disclosed that the group left Karachi in one boat and upon reaching Gujarat they hoisted a white flag on their boat and were intercepted by two officers of the coast guard near Porbandar and while they were being questioned one of the terrorists grappled with one of the officers slit his throat and threw the body in the boat. The other officer was told to help the group reach Mumbai. When they were four nautical miles away from Mumbai there were three speedboats waiting for them where the other coastguard officer was killed. All the ammo was then shifted into these three spedboats they reached Colaba jetty on Wednesday night and the ten men broke up into groups of two each. Four of these men went to the Taj Mahal hotel, two of them to the Trident hotel, two towards Nariman House at Colaba and two of which Azam was one moved to CST.

Azam, who was at Nair hospital for nearly four hours, was taken away by the intelligence agencies in the early hours of Thursday to an unknown location after the hospital authorities had removed the bullet from his hand and declared that his condition stable. But it seems the police grilling was so intense that before he left the hospital for an undisclosed location he pleaded with the police and the medical staff to kill him. "Now , I don't want to live," he said.

I hope the UPA govt won't hand over any evidence to US/UK investigators. Hopefully, they will remember what the americans did last time when they were given evidence in 1993 blasts. This time, they want to protect their MuNNa much more to keep their GOAT on track.

With MMS cosying up too much to the bush administration, i am keeping my fingers crossed. I hope they remember to keep indian interests at heart and not that of other countries.

Time to brush dust off the list of 20 that LKA had demanded from pakistan. That includes dawood and his henchmen and LeT chiefs. If the civilian government is really in the dark, better prove it by handing over all those 20.

Groan :(

Why a new thread?

Anyone who wants to read/see all the links that were posted now have to go back to the main page and trash can and start searching 2 old threads from the last 2 days.

This forum can take a 100 page thread

Why recycle at a time of fast moving events when a gap of 2 hours makes you miss 3 pages?

Besides making more work for people who read, it is more admin work.

the day its enters into dumb minds or deliberately dumb minds of western analysts, that the ideology that motivates these ********, declares them [westerners] to be as much of an infidel as us and consequently making all of us equal & legitimate targets. Any attempt to create good terrorist [who works for America/West] v/s bad terrorist [who works against western interests] shows nothing but desperate attempts to delusion oneself.

It was a matter of pure chance that during 1980's their and your [west's] interests were same. Hence it appeared as if they acted as instruments of your foreign policy, the foot soldiers who battled Soviets bleeding their economy by prolonging the war. However, their real motivation was to fight invasion of Islamic land by atheist communists and not any kind of fancy belief that west is somehow good so its nice to ally with them.

Just understand that these guys are not bunch of gangsters who can be made to follow diktats of a master blindly. Their master is Allah and they will only follow his commandments rightly or wrongly interpreted. Unfortunately no interpretation of Quran can make you[west] look on the side of Allah. Hence its futile to entertain the notion that somehow we can gain direct or indirect control over them and let them run havoc on anyone we wish, anytime we wish.

I repeat they are doing this because they who are Muslims are made to believe in certain interpretation of Quran. In those verses every westerner is as much a LEGITIMATE target as is every Indian. All infidels are equal.

The day this truth is absorbed by fellow democracies & free regimes of this world, we will be able to solve the problem of Islamic radicalism quickly for then the civilized world will be able to stand up together and deal with this menace.

But going by history that tells us that even people like Nazis were tolerated and allowed to grow [Policy of Appeasement] since Hitler's Germany was considered by France & UK to be their buffer against & answer to communist Soviets, one can expect it will take more than what has already transpired for these guys to give up attempts of self delusion.

Priyanka Gandhi says something to this effect.
"if IG was here, the reaction would have been different"
I heard interview on TimesNow, but couldn't really decipher what she was saying.

Bollywood’s Bachchan Sleeps With Gun Under Pillow After Attacks

By Arijit Ghosh

Nov. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Amitabh Bachchan, hero of Bollywood action blockbusters such as “Sholay” and “Zanjeer” slept with a revolver under his pillow after terrorists attacked hotels, railway station and an apartment killing 121 people.

“I am ashamed to say this. As the events of the terror attack unfolded in front of me I did something for the first time and one that I had hoped never ever to be in a situation to do,” Bachchan wrote on his blog. “I pulled out my licensed .32 revolver, loaded it and put it under my pillow.”

Bachchan, 66, who often filmed stunt scenes himself, and was badly injured while shooting a fight scene for “Coolie,” said he spend the entire day watching local television channels reporting on the terrorist attacks with “anguish and anger.”

“My pain has been the sight and plight of my innocent and vulnerable and completely insecure countrymen, facing the wrath of this terror attack,” Bachchan wrote. “And my anger has been at the ineptitude of the authorities that have been ordained to look after us.”

Bachchan, known as the “angry young man,” for his roles portraying individuals fighting injustice, said he “salutes” the “brilliant officers and police personnel” who have laid down their lives. The actor made his film debut in 1969.

In “Zanjeer,” or Chain, he played a police officer out to punish the killers of his parents, while in the 1975 movie “Sholay,” or Embers, he plays the role of a petty thief, who along with his partner fights a bandit. Bachchan said he had a “disturbed sleep,” last night.

Commando Sweep

Commandos today stormed a Jewish center in Mumbai in a bid to free hostages and scoured two luxury hotels for militants, more than 36 hours after terrorist attacks across the city.

At the luxury Taj Mahal Palace and Tower Hotel, forces hunted for militants who raided the buildings late Nov. 26. The Trident and Oberoi buildings were cleared, an Indian national security guard said on television.

“It’s really devastating to see all that is happening in the city,” Bollywood actress Sharmila Tagore was quoted by India Abroad News Service as saying. “When I came to Mumbai, I stayed in the Taj Mahal hotel for a very long time. So when I saw the hotel burning, I felt as if my house is burning.”

Bachchan was named the “Greatest Star of the Millennium” by BBC News online users in 1999. He also hosted the Indian version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” from 2000 to 2005.

Bachchan has been writing his “Big B” blog since April, using the site to make his views public on films, the industry and the media’s portrayal of the actor and his family. The blog entries are frequently featured in the country’s newspapers in their movie and gossip columns. The blog is hosted by BigAdda.com, part of friend and billionaire Anil Ambani’s group of companies.

amitabh bachchan has no moral right to speak about anything related to terrorism or national security. This is the guy who has sold his soul to dance to the tunes of people like amar singh and the like in the samajwadi party, which is perhaps the biggest sponsor of terrorism in mainstream indian politics.

CNN-IBN is using Karkare's death to refute Sadhvi's claims in her affidavit that she was tortured. They say that the man who was accused of torturing her today died facing Lashkar, so all the politicians who in MP raised voice against torture of Sadhvi & Col. Purohit by ATS should hang there head in shame.

Wow in this moment of high emotion they are trying to sell to the public what should be actually judged in the court room on basis of unbiased analysis by judiciary and not by media or any politician.

All this courtesy --- Rajdeep Sardesai.

Sardesai,

This is my answer to you: Even if ATS has tortured Sadhvi & Karkare was personally involved the country is willing to look at it as a few grey spot on otherwise a person who shines with pure whiteness of moon itself. And those grey spots are not due to him instead they are because of external pressures that every Indian in all spheres of life has to face from the politicians who are real holders of strings that control [or can control] everyone else like puppet and make them sing their tune as and when required.

Lastly if at all its you who need to hang your head in shame for trying to exploit such a sensitive situation.

By Vipin Nair and M.C. Govardhana Rangan

Nov. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Ashok Kapur, chairman of YES Bank Ltd. that’s partly owned by Rabobank of the Netherlands, was killed in a terrorist attack in Mumbai two nights ago, his bank said.

Kapur was shot by terrorists at the Oberoi Hotel, where he had been dining with this family, spokesman Debasis Ghosh said over the telephone from India’s financial capital.

At least 124 people were killed and 370 were injured in almost 48 hours of violence as terrorists attacked hotels, a railroad station, restaurant and Jewish center. More than 200 people were this afternoon freed from the Oberoi-Trident hotel complex after commandos cleared the site of terrorists who had held Indian and overseas guests and workers as hostages.

Kapur owns about 11.8 percent in the bank, while Rabobank International Holding BV owns 18 percent of the bank as of Sept. 30, according to data posted on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
