While Times Now channel first said it was an LPG blast, it has changed it in the last few moments to say 'it was possibly more than a mere cylinder blast'.

8 dead, and over 40 injured.

Home Ministry in Delhi confirms it was a bomb blast. Forensic team from Delhi has been despatched. Post 26/11 mechanism has been kicked into place. Law and Order, intelligence have now been put in place to search for network responsible.

NSG and IB team will be visiting the site. Eyewitnesses say bodies blown to pieces and bodies flung outside onto the road. ATS on site.

3 Foreign nationals confirmed killed. 1 Sudani national injured - Hawar House is a US centre opposite this bakery.. Bodies very badly mutilated. Possibly more foreign nationals.

The Bakery is situated at Koregaon Park. Area's real estate prices are the highest in Pune. Foreigners are a common sight in this area.

I am in the Koregaon Park area right now. There are major traffic diversions here, and we were made to walk from Pune Central mall to the Atur Park area, where I am staying with relatives. The entire main road on which the Taj Blue Diamond is situated is completely cordoned off.

My condolences to the victims and their kin. :(

Initial take on this issue:

1. This is almost surely an ISI/LeT operation, the prime evidence for that is the Feb 5 pigLeT rally where LeT's #2 Makkhi-choos said this:

At one time, jihadis were interested only in the liberation of Kashmir, but the water issue had ensured that “Delhi, Pune and Kanpur” were all fair targets, he said.

2. TSPA and pigLeTs have calibrated their terror output to achieve tactical politcal objectives. 26/11 was meant to guarantee a border crisis so that TSPA could escape US pressure to take on their own assets. Today, the immediate political objective is to force India to back off talks.

3. The reason for TSPA to force India to back off talks is that India's offer, although borne out of weakness, caught Kayani by surprise. Kayani had just launched a verbal offensive hihglighting the India threat, with ISI moutpieces raking up the bogus water issue along with the usual J&K stuff. If talks were to proceed, even if superficial, it would severely undercut TSPA efforts to thwart US pressure to act in N.Waziristan. Unkil can say - India is talking and offering x,y,z so why can't you move a few more brigades to FATA if not a division or two?

4. Given the limited objectives, pigLeTs and ISI could not use their own assets like in 26/11, so they likely used SIMI/IM people for this, the same people who were probably interacting with Headley/Rana and provided local support for 26/11.

5. Usually attacks by pigLeTs or their subcontractors precede a verbal volley by Hafiz-e-pig or other top leaders. Given this, we can expect follow on attacks of the same scale in Delhi, Kanpur, Hyderabad etc., all of which were mentioned in last week's rallies as targets

6. If GoI does not back off from talks now or after the immediate follow on attacks, or if the follow ons fizzle out, we can expect another 26/11 type attack originating from TSP not too long from now

7. From the current set of weaklings in New Delhi, we can expect another stellar exhibition of spinelessness. P.Chidambaram at Home may be one small exception but he is pushing against a tide of jelly spines.

8 killed, 33 injured in Pune bakery blast

Tags: Pune blast, German Bakery, terror attack

PUNE: In a suspected terror attack, eight people were killed and upto 40 injured in a bomb explosion in a popular bakery near a Jewish prayer house here in the first major strike after the 26/11 carnage in Mumbai.

The blast took place in the German Bakery, an old business establishment in the Cantonment area of the city, at around 1830 hours. The famous Osho Ashram, frequented by foreigners, is also located in the vicinity of the blast site.

US terror suspect David Headley is believed to have stayed at the Ashram during his visit to the city.

"There was a bomb blast. There have been eight deaths and 33 people were injured", said Pune's Joint Commissioner of Police Rajendra Sonwane. "It's most probably a terror attack. We are sending a forensic team of CBI and personnel of National Investigative Agency (NIA)", Union Home Secretary Gopal Krishna Pillai said in New Delhi.

Official sources said an Improvised Explosive Device was used to trigger the blast. Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Ramesh Bagve, who is an MLA from the constituency, said upto 40 people were injured, three of them seriously.

"It is a suspected bomb blast. So far, it is not confirmed. We are verifying this", Sonwane said adding "we have not arrived at any conclusion at this stage but prima facie it appears that it is a bomb blast".

A team of Anti-Terrorism Squad and bomb disposal squad visited the spot to ascertain the nature of the blast.

Sonewane said the nationality of the dead was being ascertained. Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan said it was yet to be established as to what was the cause of the blast.

He said he had talked to the Police Commissioner who told him that unless they examined the evidence on the scene of the blast they cannot come to any conclusion. He said initially it was thought to be a cylinder blast.

Forensic experts are there at the site and the exact cause was yet to be ascertained, Chavan added.

The scene of the blast was littered with thick patches of blood and severed limbs. "I was travelling by an autorickshaw. I heard a loud explosion and the ground shook", said Santosh, one of the injured in the blast. An eyewitness said there was a loud bang which shook the entire area and "we saw a fire".

X-posting from TSP thread:
Some tweets on the pune attacks:
Here is link to Feb 5th story by Nirupama Subramaniam in Hindu quoting JuD Abdul Rehman Makki's explicit threat to Pune http://is.gd/8j55i

Incredible that keyword search on Google News on Makki Delhi Pune Kanpur returns just this one story by Nirupama in Hindu reflects on media.

Beginning to wonder if Nirupama Subramnian was the only one in entire Indian media to report Makki's threat to Pune along with Kanpur Delhi

I expect Abhinav Bharat and Samjauta Express to be raked up to TSP-ians (and peack-nits from India) soon. But on a serious note this might be a belated response to continuance of ban on SIMI.

RIP..

I sincerely pray that GoI doesn't let death of few hundred India citizens and some foreigners and loss of Billions of dollars of business/tourisim etc etc come in the way of constructive talks with Pakistan. In fact we shoulkd immediately am end our constitution to disallow any one blaming Pakistan for any terrorist attacks in India and all terrorist attacks should be immediately blamed on Indian army and Hindu militants.

Let's start a compaign on ToI immediatley...what should be the name of the campaign?

It will be usual "terrorists" are trying to thwart India TSP love making.

Yes and this weakens the India position so much. It legitimizes terror done by Pukes, and at the same time elevates them to the notion they are trying their best to do peace with India, while non state actors are so angry with India not giving away Kashmir blah blah and we are sorry these things are happening. What can we do? Please tell India to hand Kashmir, water, leave Afghanistan, stop interfering in Baluchistan. Till then we are finding it very hard to control these non state guys. Look we are fighting terror everyday.

Only an idiot now cannot see that this is a dead end for India.
Only an Idiot can conclude after this that a Stable, peaceful Pakistan is in India's interests.

India must not attack Pakistan after these incidents. India must start attacking the idea of a stable and peaceful Pakistan. Start by innocently asking that question.." IS it possible for a Stable, Peaceful Pakistan to exist in peace with it's neighbors?" Think a little in context..it's not.

True. What is it, some sort of sick joke by the Pakis or some occult beliefs by the planners?

The only good thing about these new terror attacks by ISI is , now they are targetting foreigners. In some way, it will definitely affect the tourism and Indian image as a safe tourist destination or a business hub , hence forcing GoI to respond . I just hope , they don't respond by giving up Kashmir. Even impotence and inaction have a limit. Let us see when GoI reaches the limit. Expect the media to go full throttle to divert the attention.

Timing for the blast...Will Pak now use this to wringle back on its commitment?

US, Afghan troops sweep into Taliban stronghold
Thousands of U.S. Marines and Afghan soldiers stormed the Taliban stronghold of Marjah by air and ground Saturday

Troops Take Positions in Taliban Haven
American, Afghan and British troops occupied crucial positions across the Taliban stronghold of Marja on Saturday, encountering only sporadic fighting as they began the long and possibly bloody ordeal of house-to-house searches.

It's going to be interesting, that is, if it isn't revolting, to see what the so called "left" commentators are going to say about this latest blast. Will they once again invoke Ayodhya, Gujarat riots and Mumbai riots? Or will they utter the standard "This is a desperate, last-stand attack by the Jihadis, who want to derail the peace process"

They've been using this line as far back as the bombing of the Kashmir provincial assembly on Oct 1/2001, and the soon-after massacre of 18 paramilitary personnel at Ramban in J&K( distinct from Kaluchak in May/2002).

How many more 'desperate last stand attacks by the Jihadis' are there going to be, before these idiots advocate actually *doing* something?

If India acts based on this blast ex. Withdrawal of talks or moving of troops..it will help Pakistan to say its eastern border is threatened and rush troops from Afghan border. This will help taliban find safe cross over into Pakistan.

Please recall, Pakistan was trying its best to get out of talks. The verbal diarrhea of Mr. Qureshi, Ministerial meeting to discuss on talks, noises about Kashmir, hyping of IWT issues
