I don't think anyone claimed that the 23rd March test was Akash-NG. The latter was tested in end of Jan by DRDO. Would've been a bit surprised if the user tested it within 2 months

The Phillippines, now Chile and S.Am nations.

http://www.indiandefensenews.in/2021/03 ... -indo.html
Chile v.keen to acquire BMos,as well as sev. other S.Am nations.

Sources told Financial Express Online that “There has been lot of interest for ship and shore-based platforms. With its reduced size BrahMos NG (Next Generation) can be accommodated in a number of sea and air platforms.” The South American nation (Chile) has expressed interest in the coastal, naval as well as air version of the missile. It has expressed interest in mobile autonomous launchers for coastal defence batteries, ship-based weapons complex for submarines and frigates.

PDV is a massive missile. If the thing about the 2nd stage is true that means...Is it an upgrade of the Gen-1 kill vehicle (which was essentially PAD stage-2)? It appears to have retained, partially, the propulsion module.
Image
I was gonna make a video about it but hell. Scales are slightly off (~10%). By any metrics, PDV-KKV is a monster, mostly because of the giant propellant bottles for its DACS thruster and an integral 2nd stage motor. Going by the designs available in public, AD-2 KKV will be smol

Little OT but relevant as Barak-8 ABM capabilities aren’t advertised.

There is a claim that on capability-wise it sits between existing David Sling/Iron Dome systems and Arrow ABM. Israel may put to use in this role as situation demands.

So please educate us on the small size THAAD :P and its comparison with Indian surface launched ABM?
Just asking of unwashed yindu native.

I hear there is a US missile called SM3, is it real? Relevant?

Haridas, so PDV KKV on a Agni II will be true ABM.

SM3, in a recent excercise shot down an ICBM surrogate from an agis destroyer. It is very much real.

THAAD is designed to provide up to IRBM level of protection (for now though there are talks about extending the system out to ICBM class targets in the future) and is a terminal defense system which is engaging these targets between roughly 50 km and 180 km or so in altitude (a fairly narrow band). It has between 100 km and 200 km range depending upon the type of target. So very much a theater defense asset that deals with the upper tier threats while other tactical systems like patriot focus on the lower tier threats. These parameters and the weight and size of the vehicle were designed with magazine capacity (dictated by raid defeat demands), expeditionary deployability, mobility etc in mind. Also note, that the radar supporting the system offers excellent discrimination ( X band) so the divert capability of the interceptor itself is impacted allowing further reduction in size, weight and thus increasing magazine.

SM-3 in contrast is quite a larger, and heavier missile with a significantly larger envelope (exoatmosheric - altitude is believed to be in excess of 1500 km for the largest variants) especially with the 21 inch diameter Block IIA which is what intercepted the ICBM surrogate recently. It is designed to provide area defense for the surface fleet and troops over land. What it gains in envelope it pays in size and bulk though for AEGIS it is less relevant (a THAAD on a destroyer would still consume the full MK41 cell just like the SM-3).

Their respective envelopes can be seen in this chart:

PDV-2 is an excellent platform with good scale-up possibilities for taking on long range missiles; excellent booster acceleration and fuel volume for range for 2 stage ABM.
1.4meter dia is very valuable.

https://twitter.com/TheWolfpackIN/statu ... 48928?s=20 ---> DRDO's VL-SRSAM will be produced by private sector companies instead of CPSEs like BDL.

https://twitter.com/Firezstarter1/statu ... 48225?s=20 ---> Huge news. VL-SRSAM program up for private production, with DRDO to assist with tech transfer and other items. Moving the production infrastructure away from BDL complex alone and broad basing it.

https://twitter.com/Firezstarter1/statu ... 45345?s=20 ---> If they are assembling the entire missile, including the warhead, this will automatically address BDLs infrastructure scale up issues which depend on GOI capex. Fingers crossed.

What is the power of this 'Micro' turbofan engine? Is this a development program being validated to scale up for more powerful engines in the future and if not where in will this engine find its application(which platforms)?

is treetop flying regime the only hold up with Nirbhaya. In most cases that was the only failure. Last i heard issues were being worked on but all silent throughout

Prasad,
Awesome stuff! Please keep this going...

I saw the image of MIRVs at 1:32-1:37 and was wondering if it was our first look at India's MIRV configuration. But on a closer look, it may not be Indian...

https://twitter.com/GODOFPARADOXES/stat ... 36866?s=20 ---> On 22 March 2018, BrahMos with indigenous seeker was test fired & showed pinpoint accuracy. The horizontal terminal attack capability of Brahmos at supersonic speed is specifically usefull to target blast doors of tunnels, bunkers, etc of underground sites.

Image

https://twitter.com/GODOFPARADOXES/stat ... 79298?s=20 ---> Two Brahmos can be fired one after another, first to breach blast door & second to follow through for greater damage to the now exposed elevator/landing area. First Brahmos with armour piercing and second Brahmos with thermobaric warhead will be a good combo in this case.

It's an American system, Minuteman III.

https://twitter.com/GODOFPARADOXES/stat ... 74145?s=20 ---> This model of unknown missile am fairly sure belongs to new family of SSM's of which SMART is a member. Because midsection onward till booster end it is copy of SMART. Possibly it is a AShM or SSM with near same performance specs of SMART minus its torpedo payload, nose sections, etc.

Interesting not 1 but 2.
One on the rear has bigger hatch. Could be for K4/5 and the front one for K-15??
Looks like 2 more being built ?

IIRC, the last missile test by Armed Forces/DRDO was the SFDR test 3 months ago. Clear difference in the urgency shown during the standoff vs now.

Even granting that some of those tests were to "send a message", there is a visible cooling off. I'd have expected to see accelerated trials & inductions of key systems

For god's sake cant the SFC get a decent 16X16 instead of this tractor trailer configuration? Surely this contraption will have very less maneuverability except on plain stretches. Our most potent missile and delivery platform is on an over-stretched jugaad!!!!

So we spent all that money on the missile and canister and peanuts on the vehicle. I wonder what kind of suspension and balance that trailer will provide on off-road ! Seems like Russ, Cheen are all idiots while we will do like this only! All SF had to do was consult Philipji and get the Ruski maal ! Even North Korea has that. I hope the driver cabin is bulletproof? Someone seems never heard the lines… for want of a nail… the kingdom was lost

Also what is with the tiny skateboard tires at the back part of the trailer? Prams for babies have bigger tires than this. This will surely trip and skid at the first instance of a gutter.

And when are we going to cut down all those trees and “redevelop” our Terai-regions into a tundra or Gobi like state so we can get some huge MZKT from Belarus, re-label it “Rakkitman” by a private player and let them roam freely in full view of satellites with SAR GMTI like true mards?

We should ask Reliance to take over the SFC. They build the world’s largest refinery so it would be easy for them to build the MZKT grade heavies under deepest ToTs

And off course people forget given population density we need our missiles to look like any.other container/ goods trucks to enemy satellites which I think it does, it can be mistaken for IOCL/ BPCL truck from above.

And unlike Siberian, gobi desert, inner Mongolia we dont have large amounts of inhabited flat land where off road is really useful, no vehicle is going to go off road in Indian rough hilly forests, best is areas with high tree cover, tunnels in mountains, hiding in cement sheds in Urban areas, some of the SFC should be rail mobile while some of it road mobile.
