Military Flight Safety
Re: Military Flight Safety
It appears the aircraft when right through the boundary wall.
Re: Military Flight Safety
The IAF has confirmed. Both pilots died in the crash. This is depressing.

"The pilots were out for a general training session. Mirage 2000 is a training aircraft. The aircraft did not take off properly and crashed into the blockade near the runway. Both pilots ejected but their parachutes, too, caught fire. One pilot died. One is critical and undergoing treatment at command hospital," HAL sources told TNM. The cause for the malfunction is yet to be determined, and an investigation is underway, they added.
Re: Military Flight Safety
This is the tenth Mirage 2000 crash since induction in 1985.
Out of the 10, six have been single seaters and four (incl today) have been twin seaters.
Around 50 airframes were inducted in total and thus around 40 airframes are left between three squadrons.

Got the full names of both the pilots. Forgive me if the names are spelt incorrectly. I got them from a news feed.
- Squadron Leader Sameer Abrol
- Squadron Leader Siddharth Negi
May their souls rest in peace!

Police have said Squadron leader Sameer Abrol and Squadron leader Siddarth Negi died from burn injuries at the hospital where they were taken immediately after the crash. Both pilots had ejected from the plane, but had sustained severe burns by then, said officials.
Re: Military Flight Safety
Saw the news first thing in the morning. I am feeling really sad. I passed from near the accident spot, many fire brigade trucks were reaching the airport. Didn't have a heart to look at the scene. Some people were looking at it from over the wall.
Looks like rejected Take off. We lost two souls. Hope their families find some strength to face the terrible loss. Om Shanti.

Re: Military Flight Safety
Agreed, Karan, we dont know the cause and it would be unfair to blame HAL for the crash before an official CoI is completed.Karan M wrote:Also, general note for posters, please don't mimic the toxic world of Facebook and Twitter and start blaming HAL for the crash. We don't know what happened. Videos of the crash site show a lot of kites circling around though.
However in the recent past this is the third fatal accident during an airtest after overhaul at HAL. Earlier on 27 June 2018 a Su-30MKI crashed at Nashik during an airtest after overhaul at HAL Nashik and another on 13 December 2011 after overhaul at HAL Nashik.Rakesh wrote:https://twitter.com/sudhiranjansen/stat ... 3610747905 ---> Two IAF fighter pilots dead in a Mirage 2000 trainer crash in Bengaluru. The aircraft was upgraded by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and was going acceptance trial/test.
While we dont know the reason for 27-6-2018 crash, but for the 13-12-2011 crash, then Defence Minister M K Anthony gave the reason as human error (technical) in Parliament. A report at that point of time mentioned that the fly by wire system was not properly reinstalled. Unfortunately, I cant find that report but here is another confirming it was on an Air Test.
https://defense-update.com/20111217_ind ... blems.html
Another report http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/IAF/Datab ... aft/SB-142The aircraft was relatively new, among those built by HAL India in 2009. It was on the first flight following mandatory periodical check (400 flight hours).
Reasons could also include OEM like Dassult and IAPO not sharing proper and complete training & documentation to HAL. Often whole pages are found to be missing in manuals and T-90 tank documentation had significant missing parts.
Aircraft crashing on Air Test is a cause of concern and preventable.
Both Human Error (Pilot) and Human Error (Technical) are areas Air Forces, Manufacturers and MRO agencies work hard to eliminate.
Re: Military Flight Safety
Were these test pilots or operational pilots..?
Re: Military Flight Safety
True sir. Several crashes have happened in rural, semi urban areas and the villagers rush to help.Rakesh wrote: https://twitter.com/ajitkdubey/status/1 ... 7462372357 --> Every time a crash happens, villagers rush to help the pilots. Same help was provided to Wing Commander Katoch when his Jaguar crashed in Kushinagar due to technical defect. Jai Hind, Jai Hind Ki Sena and Jai Hind ke Log!
I have read that most times the pilots have to actually tell the villagers not to lift them/move them as the nature of injuries (if any) are unknown and it is recommended that the person be not moved except after checking by trained medical professionals.
In some of the recent photos (including the one of the Jag pilot) one can see that the pilot is calmly sitting down while the villagers are standing quietly around him (probably after being told to do so by the pilot himself).
Re: Military Flight Safety
Heartbroken after reading about the loss of pilots.

Upgraded M2K-TH on acceptance trial sortie goes down. Both pilots dead .
Really sad story. One of the pilots landed on the burning wreckage, after ejecting.Seems like a case of shoddy work by HAL.Some people should really be held accountable and heads should roll!
Wait for the COI. No more speculation.

The problem with screw drivergiri, you don't know what you screwing.
I don't know if it is fate, LCA(touch wood) is the only HAL "touched" jet which hasn't crashed. Tells us why knowing what your are "screwing" is so important.

Arm chair marshals happily settled in phoren countries and sitting in their cozy homes, pls stay away from HAL!!! Under the circumstances, where ppl are trying to protect a nonsense company trying to produce a screw drivergiri fighter aircraft ,why sabotage can not be ruled out!!!

^^can we just refrain from mudslinging on the moment. There are photos of sqn leader sameer abrol who passed away in this accident. I just hope that the buck stops somewhere and if someone's responsible, be it shoddy work by HAL or be it sabotage spends rest of his life regretting his mistake in a jail

How this happen to an established aircraft, irregardless of upgrade?
Too early to say that anything was shoddy.
The LCA has an unblemished safety record despite being a brand new design. So we know HAL could do good work.
Re: Indian Air Force News & Discussion - 15 Dec 2016
Even new HAL built MKI had crashed couple of months back the big saving grace was both pilot ejected safely.
Loosing 2 Sqdr Leader is a big loss to IAF more than aircraft itself but unfortunately accident do happen

Re: Military Flight Safety
Initial reports state that the aircraft crashed as a result of not taking off. That ties in with the pictures of the aircraft going right through the boundary wall.
Bird strike does not gel.

Re: Military Flight Safety
It did not go through any boundary wall. It crashed within the airfield premises on the take off roll.

Sorry Deejay Saar. I did not mean to jump the gun.deejay wrote:It did not go through any boundary wall. It crashed within the airfield premises on the take off roll.
The pictures (second post from top on this page) show a wall being smashed right through.

And a news article had pinpointed the wreckage of the crash. Click on link below and the crash is apparently in the vicinity of where it says HAL Playground...

Negi, who hailed from Dehradun, was commissioned in the IAF in June 2009. He would have turned a year older today.
A look at Squadron Leader Abrol’s Facebook profile reflects his love for flying. In 2013, he wrote: “When the airplane makes a sudden noise, you think to yourself ‘Well, I lived a good life!’”
