Relieved to hear no loss of life... neither the aviators, nor civilians on ground.

https://twitter.com/realkaypius/status/ ... 89504?s=20 ---> Successful ejection with no lives lost from one of IAF's oldest trainers is good news; the CoI will deal with evidence & data. The first female aircrew from the Indian military to eject IIRC? AVM Tejpal Singh, ETP, & Squadron Leader Bhumika, FTE, are both safe & recovering.

Genuinely curious: why do an AVM and a squadron leader feel the need to fly a trainer such as Kiran?

The AVM seems to be ETP (E? TEST PILOT) and the Squadron Leader (https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.hindus ... 4-amp.html) seems to be an FTE (Flight Test Engineer), so both were probably on some kind of evaluation test flight.

Rakesh, India Today also had a feature on the control rods' material change. I haven't read it.

Ok read the July 10. 2023 issue article on helicopters by Pradeep Sagar.
Looks like the entire investigation didn't explain how a misinstallation of a serrated washer causes the control rods to rapidly develop fatigue and break up.

Let me say what I know.
Serrated washers are used to lock the nut to retain preload after torquing during installation.
A serrated washer should be installed with the serrations facing the nut so it does not loosen under vibration.
If installed with serrations on the farside its useless as it wont grip the nut.
So clearly there was lack of installation training.

Now the control rods move linearly to the aft rotor housing. So they see only tension and compression.

With a lost preload and probably a loose bolt they must be flapping around and breaking.
That's not fatigue.
If it was so critical they should put a cotter pin to prevent the bolt from coming off.
I hope they really fixed it and not a surface-level analysis.

Relax folks. Post is not about a crash... though stupid TOIlet journos still manage to use the word in the title

IAF jet's fuel tank ‘crash lands’ in UP
An Indian Air Force fighter jet’s fuel tank fell off at a paddy field in Uttar Pradesh’s Sant Kabir Nagar on Monday.

The aircraft, which had taken off from Gorakhpur for a training mission, experienced a ‘technical malfunction’ that necessitated ‘jettisoning of external stores’ for its safety, officials said. There was no damage to life or property, they added.

An IAF official in Delhi, when contacted, said the jettisoning of "external stores" was for "operational reasons". The IAF plane was a Jaguar.

Prayagraj-based Central Air Command later also tweeted about the incident.

"A fighter aircraft was airborne for a training mission from Gorakhpur. The aircraft experienced technical malfunction which necessitated jettisoning of external stores. There was no damage to life or property in the process," it said.

Earlier in the day, police said two objects resembling the fuel tanks of an air force plane were found in a village in Sant Kabir Nagar district.

Air Vice Marshal Manmohan Bahadur (retd) put out a tweet in response to the above article. The AVM is getting trolled by many for this tweet.

Click on the link below to see the responses.

https://x.com/BahadurManmohan/status/17 ... 27994?s=20 ---> Hello NATIONALISTIC trolls!

A few of us 'anti-nationals' and 'import pushers' were correct after all, isn't it???

In aviation, if one is not truthful, lives will be lost -- FAUX NATIONALISM HAS NO PLACE when one is talking flight safety.

Get that straight.

Criticism is useful. Criticizing only indigenous products is suspicious/malicious.

Air Vice Marshal Manmohan Bahadur tweet is in poor taste coming from a ranking official in IAF. Defects are found everywhere in all products. Videshi products have them too. I know American products are not free from defects. People in America joke about not buying products made on Monday / Friday because workers could be sloppy. I have one example. A mechanic in the US worked on a car which had intermittent problems and would stop cold on freeways. He tried to diagnose the problem but could not figure it out. Finally he opened up the engine block and found a rag in the oil sump area. The rag would absorb oil and starve lubrication to one of the cylinders. This was the cause and the rag was left behind by an assembler.

Safety of lives is very important. Everyone must make sure that products protect lives. Very good that HAL found the issue and issued the fix.

All of this has nothing to do with "nationalistic", "import pushers" and other monikers.

Wreckage of IAF's AN-32 aircraft traced seven-and-a-half years after it went missing
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has located the wreckage of a transport aircraft that went missing nearly seven-and-a-half years ago.
The wreckage was found at a depth of approximately 3.4 km in the Bay of Bengal, 310 km off the coast of Chennai. The discovery was made through the analysis of images captured by an underwater vehicle deployed by the National Institute of Ocean Technology.

The defence ministry confirmed that the wreckage belongs to an An-32 aircraft, stating, "The search images were scrutinised and found to be conforming with an An-32 aircraft. This discovery at the probable crash site, with no other recorded history of any other missing aircraft report in the same area, points to the debris as possibly belonging to the crashed IAF An-32."

The missing aircraft, with registration number K-2743, disappeared on July 22, 2016, during a mission. It had 29 personnel on board. Despite extensive search efforts involving aircraft and ships, no traces of the missing personnel or the wreckage were found until now.

Looks like the first Tejas crash has happened near Jaisalmer, Pilot has ejected safely.

IAF's Tejas aircraft crashes near Jaisalmer

From this Twitter video looks like the Pilot Ejected at low altitude, Landing gear was down and have Refuelling probe, so most probably a FOC variant with a slow speed crash

on Camera, Pilot Ejects From Crashing Tejas, Parachutes To Safety
extracts
The Tejas fighter jet, India's indigenous fighter jet, crashed today in Rajasthan's Jaisalmer near a hostel complex. The pilot ejected safely from the aircraft but the jet was up in flames. The Indian Air Force has ordered a court of inquiry.
A video of the pilot ejecting from the jet showed the fighter jet gliding at a low altitude. The jet glides right to left in the camera frame and the pilot opens the parachute and descends toward the ground.

The Tejas, which is not manned, is losing altitude and crashed on the ground of the student's hostel several metres away. A white parachute is seen coming down.

The pilots pull the ejection seat and explosives under the seat blow the canopy of the fighter jet and throw the pilot up in the air. The rockets under the seat direct the pilot in a safe direction and parachutes are deployed. During ejection, the pilots experience high g-forces reaching up to 20 times the force experienced on earth, which can cause severe injuries and can even bar them from flying.

Releved to hear that the Pilot ejected safely and there is no loss of life on the ground. Could have been worse.

Difficult to make from the video (and am probably wrong) but is the undercarriage down?

Noted, Rakesh ji

More details might be released in due course (if ever the CoI findings are made public) but lowered undercarriage and low height perhaps indicates that the aircraft was returning to base?
