The Army said Lt-Gen Singh, his brigadier-rank military advisor and other staff officers, the two pilots and the technician sustained “minor injuries” in what it described as a “forced-landing” of the twin-engine ALH. But the indigenously-built 5.5-tonne chopper was completely wrecked after it careened down a “nullah” along a stream near Mandi at about 1.40 pm.
Sources said Lt-Gen Singh, who suffered some “facial injuries”, and the others were evacuated to the Northern Command military hospital at Udhampur in two Cheetah helicopters. “The Army commander was found to be fine after a CT Scan. While the technician has a leg fracture, the co-pilot (a naval Lt-Commander on detachment to the Army Aviation Corps) suffered a back injury,” said a source.
“But all are stable after medical examination and aid. There is no danger to life. A court of inquiry has been ordered into the accident to ascertain the exact reason for the crash. Preliminary inputs say there was a material failure in a key component of the helicopter manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics,” he added.

Army chopper with Northern Army commander on board crash lands in J&K, no casualties
Re: Military Flight Safety
Kudos to the ALH team for designing one amazing helicopter.
Looking at the wreckage, it is impossible to imagine how anyone could have survived this!

Re: Military Flight Safety
Typical idiotic DDM farticle, that has got the story in reverse. The story is that the 3 passengers practically walked out with no significant injury, thanks to the rock solid design by HAL. In a different country that has some pride in itself, that would have been the storyline. Oh well.Kakarat wrote:Army chopper with Northern Army commander on board crash lands in J&K, no casualties

Everytime this thread goes up - its not a good news but this time it was a bad news with a bit of positive side to it. ALH has proven it's worth.
Our original research and capabilities in helicopter development has led to a whole family of helicopters worthy enough.

But very glad to hear of the successful ejections. Hope to see the duo being able to rejoin in due course

This tweet shows the post ejection picture of the 2 pilots. They look okay (if not terrible). If I quote the tweet, it says "Pilots are safe guys..little bit fracture here and there".

Re: Military Flight Safety
Thank God for the successful ejection.
Can't even imagine how terrifying it must be to have an Engine fire and it would have taken seconds for the brave men to react before the flames would have engulfed them.

Wish them a very quick recovery and hope they can get back to flying soon!

^^ Correct assessment. Link
"At about noon, a MIG-29K twin seater aircraft, on a routine training sortie, encountered a flock of birds after take off from the INS Hansa airbase at Dabolim in Goa. The pilot observed that the left engine had flamed out and the right engine had caught fire.
"Attempts to recover the aircraft were unsuccessful due to damage and low height. The pilot, showing the presence of mind, pointed the aircraft away from populated areas and both pilots ejected safely. An enquiry has been instituted by the Navy. Both the pilots are safe. There has been no loss of life or damage to property on ground," a defence release said.

This is the 2nd crash of 29K in a short-time period. Do we have provisions in our contract with Ruskies about replacements for attrition?

Re: Military Flight Safety
One follow-up question. The unaltered flight computer was considered a cause for the upgraded Mirage 2K crash during takeoff. Has Dassault or IAF looked further?
I suspect it could be tin whiskers in the package over the many years.
The takeoff could have jolted the tin whisker and shorted a crucial circuit causing the crash.

Agra: IAF transport plane makes emergency landing after engine catches fire
AGRA: An AVRO HS 748 transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force made an emergency landing at Agra’s Kheria airbase after one of its engines caught fire. The incident took place on March 31 during a practice sortie. According to the air force sources, the aircraft’s engine caught fire seconds after taking off from the airbase after which it's two pilots made a successful emergency landing. Open-source information revealed that the aircraft was at 250 feet when its enging caught fire.

over the years, many modifications would have been made to the boards and newer modified boards would have been in place. A great many of these boards are wave soldered and microscopically inspected by certified techs, cleared by experienced inspectors, then boards are fired up to check that they are OK. Also, they have to pass LRU checks, followed by integrated system checks and again a majority are conformally coated and guessing for the mirage that all of them would be thus coated.
And then again, on installation aircraft system checks. Prior to this, on issue from stores, they all have to undergo a PIC, a pre installation check, certified as usable and passed by an inspector who has actual aircraft maintenance experience.
Tin whiskers are not much seen these days in aerospace practice.

Hari sir, if the incident occurred within seconds after take off, isn't it more likely to be at 250ft?Haridas wrote:Some professional BA fail art graduate press reporter used spellchecker to repair FL to FT.basant wrote:Agra: IAF transport plane makes emergency landing after engine catches fire

FL also stand for flight level in aviation terminology which is same as ft.
