The Indian Army reportedly carried out a successful surgical strike against a camp belonging to the Khaplang faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland, or the NSCN(K), killing five rebels and destroying the camp on Wednesday afternoon.
According to news reports, commandos of the elite anti-terror unit, the 12 Paras, launched the strike at the camp that was located at Shwelo, three kilometres inside Myanmar. Five militants of the outfit were killed and the camp was destroyed.
Soldiers of the 12 Para went swiftly inside Myanmar and reached the came at about 2 pm on Wednesday (27 June). The rebel camp was attacked by mortars, grenade launchers and rocket launchers. The Indian soldiers didn't suffer any injuries or casualties.

“The Beckoning Isle” - one of the most realistic books on Indian special operations I’ve ever read. Col Sapru is very humble and grounded in his narration, while still being proud and respectful of all his men achieved in the general cluster-eff.

I’m still trying to figure out if 1st Para Cdo picked up a detachment of South Indians specifically for this mission, or whether it is fictional. 1st Para normally recruited in the North Zone (Sikhs, Jats, Dogras and Ahirs); South Indians were being recruited in 2nd and 4th Para back then (with Marathas and Mahars, and Kumaonis and Garhwalis respectively).

What's the name of the book khannaji? Any links would be much appreciated.
Its called the Beckoning Isle.

http://www.abhaysapru.com/books/

Stories told to me by my mother's late cousin of his time in Lanka mirrored the writing in the book which is probably why i loved it so much. Not to forget that Mr Sapru was there himself. The Authenticity is undeniable. ( Easy to say I am a fan of his - actually tried to reach out to him using my uncle as a reference unfortunately no luck :( lol )

Also - read the short stories on his website

Read one short story - hit a bit hard (as it probably will to anyone who has lost a friend/relative while serving in the forces)

Elite special forces of Army, IAF, Navy get major weapons upgrade - TOI, Rajat Pandit
From new long-range sniper rifles and man-portable anti-tank weapon systems to high-speed underwater scooters and hand-launched micro drones, India continues to gradually modernise its clandestine warfare arm
Contracts for new Finnish Sako sniper rifles, Swedish Carl Gustaf Mark-4 light weight rocket-launchers, Italian Beretta pistols with silencers have been inked for the Army's existing nine Para-SF battalions.
Navy's almost 1,000 marine commandos or "Marcos" are inducting Russian VSS suppressed sniper rifles, air-droppable rubberised inflatable boats, remotely-operated underwater vehicles for explosive disposal, hands-free power ascenders and opposed boarding equipment

Leopards urine helped army in surgical strike
excerpted
The Indian Army troops used leopard’s urine and faeces to throw off dogs while carrying out surgical strikes, 15km inside Pakistan territory in 2016, former Nagrota Corps commander Lt Gen Rajendra Nimborkar said on Tuesday.
The city-based Thorle Bajirao Peshwe Pratishthan awarded Nimborkar for his contribution to the strikes. The award was given away by former chief minister Manohar Joshi who was chief guest.
Nimborkar, who served as brigade commander in Nowshera sector, had studied the biodiversity of the area minutely. “While in the sector, we had experienced that leopards often attack dogs in the areas. To save themselves from the attack, dogs prefer to stay in the locality during night,” Nimborkar told TOI.
“While devising the operational strategy, we were aware about possible dogs barking and attacking while crossing villages on
the route. To counter it, our troops carried leopards’ urine and faeces. They used to spray it outside the village. This worked
well and the dogs left them alone,” he said.
Nimborkar said the Army had maintained highest secrecy. “Then defence minister Manohar Parrikar had told us to execute the
operation in a week. I had discussed this with our troops a week in advance but didn’t reveal the exact location.

Leopard scent marks are used to mark territory and the odour isnt strongly perceptible to human olfactory senses. However, animals with better olfactory senses detect it and avoid. Having said that, sharing tradecraft wasnt a good idea.

Remember the General Officer Commanding the division during Kargil who was setting up a zoo at Leh at that point of time  There is a method to the madness.

Typically leopards stray into human areas drawn to dogs and chicken and goats and tranquilized by forest department. Before release, their health is checked. From the transient populations, the urine is collected.

Yeah, what was the point of revealing that guard dogs won't work against indian strikes? We just took one option off the table. Seriously, no point in bragging. My pet peeve is how after each terror strike during UPA era, the establishment journos would write glowing detailed reports of how India cracked the case. Next report would say how hard it is, as jihadis had wised up. Really? I wonder why.. perhaps its had to do with the fact the police guys were giving away op details!

I think it is more to do the fact that we have a fundamental insecurity in our psyche and that compells us to seek ways to look important or demonstrate something special....

Plan B To Save Abhilash Tomy Was 4 Commandos Would Parachute Into Ocean
extracts
On September 21, as Commander Abhilash Tomy lay incapacitated in the bunk of his battered sail boat, a 46-year-old Navy Captain was getting ready to carry out the most audacious rescue attempt ever attempted by the Indian Navy.
The Captain, who we cannot name, is no ordinary sailor. A highly qualified special forces operator, he commands a unit of the elite Marine Commandos (MARCOS) based in the West of the country.

If it became clear that ships in the south Indian Ocean wouldn't get to Commander Tomy early enough, the Captain and his squad of three commandos would fly to the area, jump out of an Air Force C-17 transport and combat-free fall into the Indian Ocean, parachuting in as close as possible to Thuriya, Commander Tomy's tiny boat.

as I understand it, a number of ships were racing towards the thuriya, the urgency was to get medical aid to Tomy since he was incapacitated with an injured back. the mission would have been hazardous in the extreme but potentially do-able if the weather was not too awful. the marcos would have had to stay on the thuriya and hope it didn't sink until the ships could reach her. possibly they would have dropped a survival raft with them, where they could have holed up waiting for the ships

^^ So SOD will be a amalgamation of 3 different Units into one cohesive force with its own aviation / logistics etc - Assuming to chase Strategic and NatSec Priority Missions.

So its like a JSOC like structure answering directly to Cabinet Secretariate. If that is the case where does Special Group fit in - It has a similar mandate (smaller in size and budget ofcourse).

I assume SOD is not a permanent deputation and these men will be rotated in and out of their parent units - Does that make sense? You will never maintain deep knowledge and capability this way - SG has been plagued for ever for this very reason.

What happens to mission profiles and tasking of other "vanilla" SOF units ? They continue to pursue missions at the wims of theater commanders?

there are small french outposts like amsterdam, kerguelen and crezuet island there but i dont think they have any airport or aircraft . that Osiris thing probably goes around distributing food and people , while a bigger ship visits once or twice a year to change the staff of scientists.
similar to how antarctic stations are run.

luckily his mishap occured in range of these islands. further east, there is nothing all the way to western australia a 2000km open water with no land.

in the charlie sheen epic 'seals' of 198x, they do a halo drop with powered equipment into the sea off beirut at night.
