Have we given up on the Rustom completely?
Zero news of any activity except some news once about being used in some Naxal area as a TD and had crashed there?

Heartbreaking to see the billions going away on drones despites the Rustom being in "development" since at least the late 90s ( remember seeing the model in the AI-96 when i was still a school kid) and still keep reading about imminent trials when i'm almost reaching mid life 25 years later with nothing being inducted in between ( even a bare minimum basic model).

Atleast the Nirbhay seems to have woken up from the dead but still nothing on the Rustom/UAV development side.

not sure if this got missed - havent seen this update in the thread:
https://eurasiantimes.com/rustom-2-dron ... v-project/
June 20, 2021
The later prototypes of Rustom-II involved the integration of a solid-state relay-based low weight power distribution unit; a domestically-built inertial navigation system (INS), by RCI Hyderabad, and most recently, the critical satellite communication (SATCOM) link and Lithium-ion batteries.

The drone is expected to go for final trials by this year’s end and we could soon see the operationalization of Rustom-II with the Indian armed forces, supplementing the advanced imported fleets of drones currently in service.

100 million dollars per drone. I was shocked about the Rafael price. This is pure extortion.

Is a fraction of this money is spent on Indian companies over the next 5 years. They can easily deliver this level of technology at cheaper rates. By 2026-27.

A bribe being paid to a fading power.

Thats the price for MTCR and Nuclear deal - while the products Apache , these Drones are all good while C-130 J, C-17 , P8 have been invaluable. We are paying Top dollar for all of these. Hope the Govt can get the Armed forces to commit to Equivalent at least 3-4 Billion USd for Domestic Purchases if not much more.

Somewhere else on this forum I keep saying there is money for buying htts, lchs and also developing rustom and more!

Its pardonable if we pay 3b fr MQs but only if we at the same time find ways to put 500mn into rustom program atleast.

New rules for Drones notified.

Security clearance removed for slightly higher weight class and range drones, to give boost to the industry (the drive manufacturing as well as the logistics industry)

Need to be more careful with the security implications though.

How DRDO’s electro-optical system will help detect rouge drones
By Geospatial World - 08/27/2021
The Government of India’s open sky policy for UAVs can be safeguarded if strong anti-drone measures are put in place.

With this objective, the (DRDO) is developing a new electro-optical system to track such flying objects. The Dehradun-based (IRDE) is undertaking the project. This is the second project by DRDO to help develop a surveillance system for tracking drones.

Its a characterization & testing platform for flying wing flight control system. It is to be scaled into Ghatak.

With the first flight of Swift flying wing era would officially begin in India. I was waiting for this moment for last 25 years, when I first read about B2.

Garuda Aerospace Ready With 4-Layer Anti Drone System: Agnishwar Jayaprakash
September 9, 2021

https://www.iadb.in/2021/09/09/garuda-a ... yaprakash/
Indigenisation of industries has been a major focus of the government. Recently, in an interview with Indian Aerospace and Defence, Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria said that they are working closely with private entities to innovate new components of unmanned assets. Has Garuda Aerospace approached the Ministry of Defence Or IAF for any such project or contract?

We have worked with the Army Design Bureau & the NDRF to design Delivery drones that carry payloads of 30 Kgs in High altitudes. We are also working with the Army to find hidden landmines that are planted to disrupt & disorient our armed forces. We have several other applications which are under wraps as it concerns national security. Rest assured, Garuda Aerospace is prioritizing the Defence forces to keep our country safe & the world will soon see a dominant force in the Drone Industry.

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a Rs 26,058 crore production linked incentive (PLI) scheme for auto, auto-components and drone industries to enhance India's manufacturing capabilities.
Further the PLI scheme for the drones and drone components industry addresses the strategic, tactical and operational uses of this revolutionary technology.

A product-specific PLI scheme for drones with clear revenue targets and a focus on domestic value addition is key to building capacity and making these key drivers of India's growth strategy.

The scheme will over a period of three years, lead to investments worth Rs 5,000 crore, an increase in eligible sales of Rs 1500 crore and create additional employment of about 10,000 jobs.

Adding 1 more IA drone-acquisition to the list, this time for cargo supplies. From a private firm Raphe Mphibr. Happy to see the IA support Make-in-India in this space! In a future, Kargil-type conflict, hopefully our platoons would be sending up mini-armed/suicide drones to take out bunkers, machine-gun nests etc at night, without exposing own troops

According to You Tube defence channels L&T, Tata advanced system and a new entrant have successfully lobbied the government to permit the Pvt sector develop MALE and HALE UAV's. These are presently not open to Pvt sector and the GOI is going to soon announce a policy change allowing Private sector to design and develop these UAV's.

^ Our Special forces had tested it out some years ago (for Anti-personnel / Anti-material role)

I think a MMG/LMG which spews out large volume of fire, with some dispersion, is better for AAD against drones.

Nice innovation by Indian Army, in combination with pvt sector, to repurpose Bofors L-70 anti-aircraft guns to hard-kill small drones. Hope this results in orders soon.

The IA has been pro-active in placing orders with private players in the UAV space. So, I am optimistic about this one.

Just wondering..., given that UAVs could hover over out installations, won't the fragments present a bigger danger?

A 40mm projectile is less than a kilogram, and there are hundreds of fragments that are generated. So the lethal radius is going to be very less - order of a few meters. So, targeting an UAV that is a few hundred feet in the air shouldn't be an issue.
Also, the missed rounds self-destruct - unlike using an MMG or an HMG, in which case they retain enough KE to hurt someone on the ground.

Good point but a Bofors AA has a much larger footprint, is costlier and is less mobile compared to a MMG/HMG juggad.

We need to first cover the gaps, especially the installations close to the border very quickly and not let perfect be the enemy of good.

Better, dedicated Anti-drone systems can gradually replace the makeshift ones.

Since drones come in a variety of shapes, sizes, payloads etc, anti-drone systems must also be layered (just like regular air-defense systems).

Sooner or later, a jihadi will get a bright idea to drop a grenade from a quadri-copter in a crowded marketplace. The anti-drone system to stop that will be very different from the electro-optical L-70 guns that guard vital installations

It is probably time to revisit small caliber “smart” airburst rounds for these things as a cost effective solution for small footprint areas.

Khan had the OCSW program that got canned due to ‘raisin d’khan’. But prototypes like XM312 and XM307 were build for ranges upto 2k meters. More recently the XM25 was also cancelled. Don’t know how mature is the rather convoluted XM program’s fusing mechanism for field usage but an XM25 like system slewed by an automated sensor would be sufficient for most COTS UAVs with belligerent intent. The whole counting revolutions after leaving barrel is odd and seems to be an error prone approach to something that needs centimeters sort of precision for identifying airburst point. But an old fashioned proximity fuse for 20mm or less still sounds elusive for that price point.

There is no easy way a hit-to-kill kind of round like the 50 cal will work, considering the agility of quadcopter based UAVs in executing serpentine patterns. So it has to be airburst and that brings issues for urban area usage about collateral safety.

The US Army is evaluating both small, and medium caliber drone defeat solutions for rapid fielding and is farther along on the medium caliber systems. The 30 mm proximity fuzed round from Northrop Grumman has cleared development and is basically the solution that will be adopted across the medium caliber drone defeat systems and SHORAD force (tactical vehicle or Stryker). Other counter drone 7.62 and 5.56 mm based solutions are currently being evaluated for rapid fielding, both for mounted and as handheld solutions though for the latter, the non kinetic systems are still very effective against the very low end commercial very small drones etc.

Some info about the private partner Zen tech who supplied the drone detection solution that paired with L70. Company Started in 1993 as weapons stimulator company.

My only wish, our desi solutions to look more TFTA.
supplied more than 170 simulators to over 70 customers located across the length and breadth of the country. Few of our main customers are Indian defense services, state police forces, para military forces and the navy of a south-east Asian country. The company went public in 2000 and in past three years we have grown over 100% and paid dividends too.
A great swadeshi company story.
