Tonbo Imaging's MALE EO payload weighs 25 Kgs. At a 150 Kg payload capacity, the Tapas can maybe squeeze in 2 Helinas. Otherwise, we need to come up with a SAMHO/CLGM like lightweight, low-cost, laser guided munitions (the TB2 carries 4 such munitions).

The payload carrying capacity is a real bummer (what the heck where the designers thinking for a decade!), but if the above can be managed, then its at least a decent start

There seems to be a 220hp engine under development which could enhance payload and endurance capacity-

1. Model of a drone launched missile with range of 1 km

2. Poster of a drone launched missile named JISNU-M with semi active laser homing

Previously I posted on both of them.

Looking up: India's UAV capability
13 JUNE 2022

by Oishee Majumdar

The Indian Armed Forces leased four Heron TP UAVs (pictured above) from Israel under emergency procurement clause in 2021 amid the stand-off with China. (Janes/Gareth Jennings)

The Indian government has not only emphasised the need to increase the number of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) operated by the Indian Armed Forces but also to strengthen the service's ability to deploy such technologies across a wide range of tactical missions.

To achieve this, India has increased collaboration with foreign partners – particularly, Israel and the United States – to procure UAVs and enable transfer of technologies. Such activity is aligned with the government's effort to develop the domestic private sector and reduce dependency on imports.

These initiatives have been spurred by the changing nature of warfare and the tense geopolitical environment in India's surrounding region.

UAVs play a crucial role in supporting the Indian Armed Forces' intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations, particularly along India's disputed borders with China and Pakistan as well as in the Indian Ocean region where China has been attempting to expand its presence.

Has swift suddenly sprouted a vertical stabilizer? A little weird for a flying wing test-bed.
There was none in the HSTT trial:

This is really really in the 'cool' things league. Great day. It seems the ATOL tech developed for Rustom has probably been used here as well.

What’s with vertical stabilizer? Maybe to make first few flights risk free and later to be removed?
Maybe they were not actuated in the flight, and used only in extreme cases when the bird is in danger of being lost? After enough confidence they will be removed. The fact that they are not canted (single one cannot be), looks like is a temporary measure

You're right. The article changed silently since then

But looks like they grabbed an MQ25 pic and attributed it to SWIFT initially.

Apologies. Fixed my initial comment to avoid spreading misinfo

is it just me or am I ageing and need some eye tests?
I saw two different variants in there?

at landing (about 0.11 into the youtube video) - no vertical stabiliser
Image

at take off: with vertical stabiliser.
Image

the youtube video itself (link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_aILH- ... e=emb_logo) kind of has a cut+edit job at the end (where the SWiFT lands and then taxies on the runway - its not a continuous video, the background and the colors do change)

All up weight is just over a tonne.
Has an endurance of an hour, a service ceiling of 20,000 feet and VHF-command links that are good for 200 km.
It is powered by a 4.4 KN turbofan
.

And some idiots are calling this a RC model. Dalali ki bhi had hoti hai.

Vertical stabiliser or not , the thing flies and for sure is a stealthy design , speaks volumes of Indian capabilities in aerospace. Keep in mind there are nay sayers out there whether India can actually develop a stealth jet.
I would say Indian aerospace tech just leapt one generation ahead .

This AV at 1:05 onwards claims the vertical stabilizer was not visible due to camera angle

Has anyone got to the bottom of this?

Last year's HST trials were without the vertical fins.

It seems two variants have been flight tested.

Saurav Jha on twitter
During Aero India 2019 itself I had heard from those involved that the initial iterations would have a vertical stabilizer. Nothing surprising there.

then why not have two canted vertical stabilizer. The canting angle helps in further LO.

Maybe the effort is to realize a true flying wing without vertical stabilizer. If this is the goal, why to waste time & effort in canted angle stabilizers?

Maybe once they are satisfied with the authority of other control surfaces, the vertical stabilizer would be removed...my 2 cents.

I have the same idea. I am surprised that the vertical stabilizer was always in the plan. It negates LO to some extent. Then why go for LO at all and make all those compromises.

Seems like a case of code reuse. They have already developed a pretty good UAV flight control system with Rustom.

It makes sense to plonk the same in Swift, make it fly and then start refining the code till it allows removal of the vertical stabilizer.

Obviously some other control surface has to take the role of vertical stabilizer. It is better to have a backup till enough confidence is achieved in those control surfaces.

It is better than losing the prototype. Again my armchair 2 cents.

Initial iterations. Once they're satisfied with controls laws and fight control behaving as expected, the vertical gin awas expected to go. It won't bea permanent fixture

ANI report links it to the predator deal going on hold (aka to committee). Other than heron tp which iaf already has, i can't think of any other israeli drone in a similar category than the hermes 900. Adani may lend their name, contacts, manufacture (with aid) and a made in india sticker to a ucav variant.

Not sure how these compare to predators, especially avionics/sensors
