They are from all regiments.

They are not really volunteers but what the Army MS Branch terms as 'for career interests', which means nothing actually. However, they are subject to suitability tests and if they do not come up to standard, they are RTUed i.e. Returned to Unit.

Was Major Mohit Sharma in Rashtriya Rifles or Para (SF) ? I saw a HT report with unit as RR and something on Indian Express saying he was 1 Para (SF).

Was he on deputation ?

Superb links ramanasaar...

I was wondering if it wouldn't be a good idea to create a sticky thread with useful links for people who want to get info.... links like the above are gems, and need to be preserved, rather than having people asking the same questions again and again....

Additionally, the thread would need to be moderated well so that random links like wikipedia don't get posted... only rare and in-depth ones like this.

Oh, and P.S.... Swapan dasgupta's (very interesting) blog - http://swapan55.blogspot.com

I knew you would get baited!

Isnt it wonderful that they have put so much aero knowledge in the open?

I once did a paper design for a mini Packet type cargo a/c with cheap engines for tpt in Africa. Called Camel. Not too fast but high enough altitude. Then found out need turbo props to get efficiency. And price goes up. Made me better at looking at other designs.

I dont know. We need a FAQ thread which can have this type of info.

A note to IAF section admins:
The AIR FORCE SQUADRONS AND ESTABLISHMENTS page shows the 45 SQN "Flying Daggers" to be equipped with Mig-21 Bison & stationed at AFS Naliya, but theAIR FORCE FLEET page shows only SQNs 3, 4, 21, 23, 32, 35'B', 51 to be equipped with the Bison;admins please rectify.

Also the SCRAMBLE website IAF orbat page gives the name of the 45 SQN to be Colts, could a knowledgeable member please clarify..

Can someone explain to me what the difference between Mig 29K and Rafale M is? Many people say that Rafale can only be used with a catapult, not with a skyjump. If so, what is necessary for an aircraft to start via skyjump?
And what weapon load will navy LCA have?

Thx, Sajith

^^What kind of difference are you looking for between the two?
The Rafale M operates using a catapault assisted take off. The MiG 29K is currently stated to operate without assistance of the catapault and will use the ski-jump on the Gorshkov. To perform an unassisted take off the aircraft requires sufficient thrust. There is also the possibility of reducing the take off weight.

Thanks for looking into this

- i wanted to check up on why my PM is closed? when/ how this can be up?
- Wanted to know if there is a norm of asking, taking a permission from a moderator to start a new thread. I was looking for starting a post in "international military technologies" . Why i am asking, in the last locked thread one of the Oldie member told something about informing the moderator first. But i donot know how to get touch with a moderator (too naive)

Anyway thanks for looking into this. I really appreciate

- Abhi

PS . IN FAQ i found this "There are three reasons for this; you are not registered and/or not logged on, the board administrator has disabled private messaging for the entire board, or the board administrator has prevented you from sending messages. Contact a board administrator for more information."
Now how to contact a administrator????

I want to know if Rafale could also start via skyjump or not and if not why exactly? The size and weight of both is pretty comparable:

Mig 29K
Crew: One
Length: 17.37 m
Wingspan: 11.4 m
Height: 4.73 m
Empty weight: 11,000 kg
Max takeoff weight: 21,000 kg
Thrust/weight: 1.05

Rafale M
Crew: One
Length: 15.27 m
Wingspan: 10.8 m
Height: 5.34 m
Empty weight: 10,000 kg
Max takeoff weight: 21,500 kg
Thrust/weight: 1.22

You mentioned that a sufficient thrust is needed, so what thrust/weight ratio is needed to start with a skyjump?

1. Better to use the correct spelling - ski-jump.

2. Rafale can potentially be adapted for ski-ramp operations (from my talk with the guys at AI), but that would need to be investigated - shouldn't be much of an issue though. There will definitely be some loss in load carrying ability, but otherwise, it would probably be possible to do. The guy I spoke to at the stall said "No problem, but we see".

Sorry for delayed response.

PM is not available except for moderators/admins.

You can start a new thread if there is no other thread that discusses that particular issue and the issue would not be trivial or irrelevant. It should generally follow the forum guidelines. It may still get locked by admins if, in their opinion, the thread doesn't belong to BR or for any other reason.
