That the ares-1 design has shortcomings is widely known. LINK. Its only know that they are admitting it. The launch vehicle configuration itself had come under criticism with crew vehicle stacked on top of uprated shuttle solid booster. Your linking of US economy and the space program is as diconnected as typhoon in china is caused by goat f@rt in waziristan.

for once I wholly agree with Liu.

lot of the gee whiz things coming out of govt and pvt hands in khan will be curtailed. the
cuts today will affect the pipeline 20 yrs out in terms of body of work and trained people.

the final 'sack of rome' by 'vandals/visigoths' had its roots in power struggles, complacency, rebellions, misrule, drought etc decades earlier.

no student of history can fail to see that. they will ofcourse find ways to save face albeit with more finesse than PRC using their lapdog media channels. 'I have no money' will become 'a strategic program review decided to find joint synergies between parallel programs with rationalization of cost and personnel structure'

we will ofcourse nod our heads sagely from the lofty crag here

Syria: 20 die in 'failed missile test'
Twenty Syrians were killed and over 60 injured in a failed Scud missile test carried out by Syria, Iran and North Korea in May, Japan's Kyodo News reported on Friday.

One of two missiles had apparently strayed off its course due to a technical malfunction, landing in a civilian populated area in a town on the Syrian-Turkish border. The victims were all civilians.

Two jets from the aerobatic team the Russian Knights collided in mid-air over the Ramenskoye airfield in southeastern Moscow while rehearsing for the MAKS 2009 air show, Russia's largest and most important exhibition for aerospace industry that opens on Tuesday.

The dead pilot was the Russian Knights' commander, according to the Interfax.

RIP brave soul :(

Didn't expect MAKS 09 to start this way , we lost brave chopper pilot this year before start of AI09 , shows the kind of risk they take to perform those breathtaking stunts .

Philip , I dont think this is the Aurora project , that was cancelled by DOD , more of cold war unobtimum like Star Wars and if this is a defence project MOD will take care not to test it in a place which may be public and any crash or picture will expose the project , they will do it in isolated areas.

Its more likely a UFO where nothing much can be done about it

Putin says Russia will not save plane builders

http://www.forbes.com/feeds/afx/2009/08 ... 90739.html
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin berated plane builders at the opening of Russia's premier air show on Tuesday, warning aviation bosses that the state will not support loss-making firms or defend bad managers.

Ares-1's first test flight is due on oct-31. From the article above, it is just a concept proving test to check the feasbility of the configuration. The shuttle's SRB is going to be used with a 12 vane design instead of 11 vane. All the upper stages are dummy including the fifth stage of the SRB :| .{why they dont use RS-68 cluster at stage-0/1 is something beyond comprehension. Seems to be rojgaar guarantee scheme for Thiokol}

Most space programs, here on out, will more than likely be a cover ups. Everybody and their grandfathers are gearing up for the worst.

Next iteration? Hyper, solid fueled, strapless NPAs.

A classmate of mine who used to work for ISRO told me recently that ISRO satellite center is booked heavily for next 5-10 years that they are complaining that this work pressure is tougher than private company.

Thats not difficult to imagine since ISRO barely manages launches 4-5 rockets in a year. Compare than with 20 the chinese do with their mediocre sats.

New Kh-35 variant

Post by Austin »

The Kh-35UE is fitted with a new engine, smaller in length than the original turbojet, providing additional fuel space. The intake design has also been revised. The maximum range is extended to 260km (162.5 miles). The weapon is also claimed to be fitted with a dual mode seeker, providing both active-radar guidance and passive homing link

New AN-148 plane: the unsung hero of MAKS 2009 ( click for video )
“New innovations have been applied to the design of this particular plane. We are using a riveted construction system of modern composite materials. The wing and tail mechanisms are also new and designed to be tough and hard-wearing. All the electronic systems back one another up which makes the plane exceptionally safe,” says Anatoly Suponitsky, head of AN-148 project.

KH-35UE would be Ideal for Mig-29k and N-LCA. I doubt NLCA can carry air launched KLUB.

Interesting they managed to increase the range by 100 % over Kh-35 with a new engine and more fuel without increasing the dimension or using CFT type approach.

A dual mode guidance of ARH/IIR and smart algo with datalink should be the next step to take for this missile.

I was at an airshow yesterday where the F-22 was the main performer. Interestingly enough, they took a while to get it started saying 'The computers need to warm up...'. And then when they were finally up, the show was curtailed in mid performance claiming 'Technical issues...'. And this is their Raptor demo team. Clearly, all is not well with the Raptor.

Russia to invest $143 mln in engines for new Angara rocket
The RD-191 is a high-performance single-combustion chamber rocket engine, which recently passed a series of benchmark tests at the Proton-PM company in the Perm Territory in the Urals, and will be soon certified for test flights.
The environmentally-friendly Angara rocket, currently under development by the Khrunichev center, is designed to put heavy payloads into orbit. It is intended mainly for launch from the Plesetsk space center to reduce Moscow's dependence on Kazakhstan's Baikonur, the main launch facility for the current generation of Russian rockets. The new line of rockets will complement, and eventually replace, the existing line of Rockot and Proton launch vehicles. It will be available in a range of configurations capable of lifting between two and 24.5 metric tons into low-earth orbit.

It was not so successful after all. :( :( :(
But the rocket failed to put the satellite into its intended orbit, Ahn Myong-man, the minister of education, science and technology, told reporters.

Mr. Ahn gave no further details. But South Korean media, citing unidentified sources, said the satellite broke away from the rocket 36 kilometers further away from the Earth than had been intended.

Igor , you forgot your promise to get phots of MAKS 09 beauties , if you have it please put it up

Russia deploys S-400 air defense systems in Far East
"We have already deployed a battalion of the S-400 systems in Russia's Far East in order to guarantee protection from failed launches of [N. Korean] missiles and to ensure that the fragments of these missiles never fall on Russian territory," Gen. Nikolai Makarov told a news conference in the capital of Mongolia.

North Korea has test launched several ballistic missiles from its eastern coast since January. The missiles are believed to be Scud-type and traveled up to 500 kilometers (300 miles) before falling into the Sea of Japan.
The system is also believed to be able to destroy stealth aircraft, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles, and is effective at ranges of up to 3,500 kilometers (2,200 miles) and speeds of up to 4.8 kilometers (3 miles) per second.

A regular S-400 battalion comprises at least eight launchers with 32 missiles and a mobile command post, according to various sources. The new state arms procurement program until 2015 stipulates the purchase of enough S-400 air defense systems to arm 18 battalions during this period.
