Five Hizbul Mujahideen militants were on Friday killed in an encounter with security forces in Ganderbal district in Kashmir.
"Five militants belonging to the Qadri Asadullah group of Hizbul Mujahideen were killed in a counter-insurgency operation in Preng area of Ganderbal in the wee hours today," a Defence spokesman said.
He said the identities of the slain militants were being ascertained.
According to police sources, troops of 24 Rashtriya Rifles and police laid an ambush near the Najwan forest in Preng area, 65 kms from here, following input about movement of the ultras.
The militants walked into the ambush in early hours on Friday and were asked to surrender, the sources said.

I thought HM was dead or dying. There has been a spike in HM attacks, their audacity (like attacks in Srinagar, killing of BSF jawans etc) & casualties suffered by them in the last 3 months. Must have been a spurt in summer infiltration or sleeper cells getting activated
With Unkil's AfPak withdrawal, many more recruits would get absorbed under the HM umbrella. We should also start seeing a spurt in new organizations due to the jihadi reorganization in $hitistan from their Western border to the Eastern border

Wow! Either multiple shots or high caliber stuff - probably LMGs at relatively close ranges.
If the bodies werent moved before taking the picture, it looks like the HM pigs were walking in a close file and were ambushed right royally.

SRINAGAR: Army today foiled a major infiltration bid along the Line of Control in Kashmir, killing five militants.
Troops noticed movement of heavily armed militants near the LoC in Tangdhar sector in Kupwara district, 185 kms from here, during the intervening night of August 30 and 31, an army official said.
The infiltrators were challenged by the troops leading to a gunfight between the two sides.
"So far, five militants have been killed. The combing operation is in progress in the area as there were reports that the group comprised six militants," the official said.
The elimination of the infiltrators comes a day after security forces killed five top foreign militants of Hizbul Mujahideen, including district commander Qari Assadullah, in Kangan area of central Kashmir Ganderbal district.

... "Four terrorists entered Jammu region from across the border this morning," said Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, quoting preliminary reports, according to PTI. The news agency also quotes the Army as saying that it foiled a major infiltration bid along the Line of Control in Keran sector of Kupwara yesterday and that around 30 militants are still believed to be trapped as security forces have cordoned off the area.
The heavily armed terrorists attacked the Hiranagar police station in Kathua district of J&K at about 6.45 this morning. They shot the sentry outside and three cops inside the police station and then escaped in a truck that they hijacked, to surface in an Army cantonment in the adjoining Samba district.
At the camp, they reportedly walked into the officer's mess shouting jihadi slogans and killed at least five unarmed Armymen, including the Lt Col, who was the second in command of the 16 Cavalry, the armoured corp unit attacked today. The Lieutenant Colonel was reportedly shot in the stomach at point back range.
The commanding officer of 16 Cavalry is among over a dozen people injured in the two attacks. He has been shot twice and is in critical condition. ...

One question. Why are IA soldiers not carrying side arms in border areas so close to the TSP?
Re: CT and COIN operations in India: News, Images and Discus
Side arms are only ever used by officers and maybe certain weapon/vehicle crews like helo pilots etc. No one should need to be armed inside the Mess. This was a goof up in security of the base. Given its Jammu that seems odd but I guess we'll have to wait for a CoI. Walking around like a mobile armoury is something distinctively American and I doubt it does them that much good either.ramana wrote:One question. Sad news for 16 Cav still recouping from the mess last year. Rumor regarding kit and training is that this was SSG.

The element of surprise in combat is massively underrated. The only way such attacks can be neutralized is if there has been prior intel resulting in an upgraded "force protection posture" - more sentries, sensors etc.
Why there was no clearing away of natural cover on approaches, and many soldiers armed with 7.62mm SLRs does raise a few questions though.

Read the J&K thread where there is a officers account of the Samba attack. There was early confusion due to the terrorists attire.

CamelBak...minor nitpick, it's a brand. Quality of equipment has never been a problem for any Islamic militant outfit:
1. NVGs - every single LoC infiltration at night
2. Garmin GPS devices (26/11)
3. US/NATO uniform/gear (Camp Bastion) - courtesy all the trucks that get "looted" in Pakistan
4. Kornet ATGMs - Hezbollah vs. Israel.
...and so on.

Any paanwala khabar regarding the 30 militants trapped in the Keran sector?
Re: CT and COIN operations in India: News, Images and Discus
not to start a fight, but why would you call them militants instead of terrorist pakis.atreya wrote:Any paanwala khabar regarding the 30 militants trapped in the Keran sector?

Call them 'pigs' and all other colourful terms for all I care, I was just concerned about the status of the operation. Didn't pay any attention to the word I used

This is particularly important given Yasin Bhatkal's statement that Modi is the prime target.A highly placed source in an Indian intelligence agency said, "The duo made extensive use of codes in their conversations. Codes such as Ticket for arms and ammunition, Andar for India, Upar for Afghanistan, Chote for Riyaz and Bade for Ikbal were used." One such message sent by Yasin to Riyaz reads, "andar se upar bhej dete hain, ticket dilwa dijiyega." This means, over 35 to 40 youths picked up from parts like Darbhanga and Eastern UP are being sent to Afghanistan. Please train them.
Sources say that things have radically changed in the IM after it was adopted by Al Qaeda. "Now there is no dearth of funds for the organisation," hinted a highly placed IB official. As per the new arrangement, Tahsheen Akhtar, a native of Samastipur in Bihar and Mohammed Wakar, a Pakistani resident have been made the Indian chiefs of IM with the responsibility to carry out deadly attacks. These men were also responsible for the blasts in Varanasi, Hyderabad and Mumbai.

Al Q comes in two varieties.Karan M wrote:All this proves is that Al Q and ISI are hand in glove. This is particularly important given Yasin Bhatkal's statement that Modi is the prime target.
If this report is true, IM may be being controlled by the same forces that are controlling the Jihadist cannibals in Syria.
One variety makes itself useful to US / Saudi / Israel (e.g. the Syria Jihadists).
The other variety is somewhat orphaned, but they have been helped to some extent by the Paks. Osama belonged to the second type.
There is all kinds of collaboration but as the events like the execution of Col Iman and Rawalpindi mosque attack have shown, there are complications too.

Hmmm...these anonymous inside accounts are mixed blessings - they confirm some details and confuse others to the point of raising questions about credibility. The CO, Col Avin Utthaiya till now had been reported as being unarmed and on his morning walk, when shot.srin wrote:Inside Story of Samba Attack
Now he is in a T-72 charging down the terrorists, apparently exposing himself in an unbuttoned commander's hatch, allowing himself to be shot in the chest.

New Delhi: The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has launched a massive anti-Naxal operations in the states of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, reports said on Friday.
As per reports, nearly 40,000 security personnel will be involved in the operation against the Maoists over the next four days.
Police forces in these eight states are said to be assisting the CRPF.
All India Radio quoted CRPF Director General Dilip Trivedi, as saying that the idea behind the security operation was to prevent Naxals from fleeing into neighbouring territories from their own original places of stay.
Once the operation is over, he said that an analysis would be done on its impact and outcome, and whether there is a need for conducting future offensives of this nature.
The ITBP, BSF and SSB are also participating in the operation. BSF and IAF helicopters have been positioned for air droppings and evacuation.
