Vishal, a word of caution here as the Air Force Police and Defence Security Corps personnel might not be aware of a planespotter's passion for photography. Our jawans come from small towns, villages and rural areas with mindset not aligned to hobbies of metro dwellers. Given the sensitive nature of our times, their reaction might be...unfortunate. Kindly exercise ample discretion and caution.

We love your photos!

Thank you for the compliment and appreciate your advice tsarkar ✌️
Having shot airplanes all over Bharat since the early 2000s, I am cognisant of the risks and I always err on the side of caution for the precise reasons you have highlighted.

Has anyone seen this patch in use or is it fan art?

I'd say it's a fan art because "Fishbed" is a United States/Western designation for the MiG 21. I doubt that USSR/Russia or any air forces that use MiG 21 would use that term or have patches.

These are super rare pics..never seen that rare Mirage in any other pic other than the third one you posted. There was speculation about a terrain following radar that was used, but I doubt it.

Save them on your HD (for your personal collection). Not sure for how long these images will last on twitter.

I once saw a photo of all metal Mirage 2000 (perhaps it was a metallic silver paint?) in a 1994/1995 calendar. I remember that picture so vividly. The aircraft was in flight, with the warm Indian sun shining on the fuselage. And that reflection of the sun on the fuselage was spectacular. Back then, there was no BR and no smart phone for me to quickly take a picture

There were rumours that a few of the Indian Mirages came from France with the Thomson-CSF Antilope 5 terrain following radar, but was never confirmed. There were also rumours that those particular Mirages had a green/brown camo, painted in India :)

See this yesteryear article on that radar ---> https://www.flightglobal.com/FlightPDFA ... 201981.PDF

Check out the "Mirage 2000 tests new radar" sub-article in the above pdf. And below is another yesteryear article.

There was a twin seater Mirage-2000TH as well which was originally in what seemed to be Mirage-2000D like camouflage but it was later painted over with the regular Mirage-2000 camouflage. There was an image floating around the net that came out around the time the Cope India exercises happened.

By the way speculation was that the Antelope 5 Terrain Following radar was used on those IAF Mirages that were painted differently. Also speculated that the terrain following radar was used specifically to allow low level nape of the earth flying for those specific jets that were earmarked for nuclear delivery.

However the radome on all the IAF Mirages jets was the same size whereas the radome of the Mirage-2000N nuclear strike jet is slightly smaller.

My guess is this was just IAF experimenting with camouflage to see which was more effective in a strike role.

Confirmation from Group Captain MJA Vinod (whose interview on flying the Mirage-2000 was on Hushkit). There was nothing special about those green and brown camouflaged Mirage-2000H jets. No different radar.

Not necessarily. But he was quite emphatic in his reply that the only difference is the paint. I'll believe what he says.

Guys we never took any Antilope equipped Mirages. All ours came with a better multirole avionics fit, basically the RDM radar, an internal SPJ + RWR, plus Remora and Caiman jammers.

Why was the Remora pod needed if there was an internal jammer? What's the point of having an internal SPJ if you still have to allocate one or two hardpoints for an external pod?

There was no internal jammer on the Mirage-2000 H/TH

They do have an internal jammer. It's the ABD-2000.
https://www.forecastinternational.com/a ... _RECNO=358

The Remora and Caiman are more powerful units, with the Caiman being an escort jammer.

Great find!
