Russia’s ambassador to India Alexander Kadakin took part in the handover ceremony on the Visakhapatnam base. In an interview with the Voice of Russia he said that this event would be a red-letter day not only in the history of the Indian Navy but also in the history of the Russian-Indian relations.

"I would like to stress here that the handover of the Russian nuclear sub to India was held ahead of a very significant date – the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Russia ( April 13th ) and shortly before the 50th anniversary of the beginning of military-technical cooperation between the two countries. Russia is doing what no other country is doing: it displays generosity and sincerity while sharing with India the best of what it has, and the nuclear-powered sub “Chakra” is the product of our friendly relationship and at the same time, our common child. It has a Russian heart – in this case, the reactor, and a fascinating Indian smile."

3 unfinished akula2 hulls were somehow magically used for Borei SSBN per wiki. the only other unfinished hull is likely to be a Akula1

hopefully work is ongoing with Rubin on our first proper SSN design to follow the arihant 3. a higher power reactor , a bigger sail for a 100% escape sphere, a spherical bow sonar with inclined TT behind it, non penetrating masts , marcos chamber and housing, 40 weapon loadout, 12 x nirbhay in VL tubes ....

INS Chakra inducted into Navy's eastern fleet
The Chakra’s capabilities are provided by a 190-Mw nuclear reactor, powerful enough to light up a medium-sized city. It is armed with the versatile Russian Klub anti-surface missiles that can strike a ship almost 300 kilometres away. It also has four 533-mm and four 650-mm torpedo tubes.

Says P Asokan, INS Chakra’s first skipper, “I commanded a conventional submarine before this and we were restricted by battery power. But now, I have no restrictions. I can chase a vessel anywhere, overtake her, play games with her, and the nuclear plant never runs out of power.”

Keep off South China Sea, India warned
BEIJING: India will pay a heavy price for exploring oil in the disputed areas of South China Sea, said a leading Chinese official a day after China lost political round on the issue at the Asean summit that ended in Cambodia on Wednesday.

"China will not stand any joint cooperation in our claimed maritime areas," said Wu Shicun, president of the government-run National Institute of South China. Wu was referring to joint exploration project by ONGC-Videsh and a Vietnamese oil company in South China Sea.

Sale would breach NPT and MTCR as India can then modify the ship as it sees fit.

It's right on top of the escape pod. If there is an escape pod, of course.

when arihant arrives, we are operationally ready for the nfu triad's best kept strategies.

now, these may appear like expense and we could have directly placed 10 arihant instead.. this happens when a country is not a consumer alone but would be soon be producer as well. till we have maturity at level 5, these expenses are nothing, and are always good expenses to have.

transferring the operational aspects to arihant is important, now when we have both these platforms, then it is easy to build various strategies into customized implementation that may not be possible with genuine out-right purchased platforms.

one of the most important treaty would be mtcr, and further please note that we are the only nation on the planet with critical power countering npt.

so, please be aware of these.

Expect the Chakra to be in IN service for at least 20 years :D with renewed lease. If I remember right there were reports that the Chakra as good as belongs to India only thing being that there will be no official sale :)

No need for outright sale of Nerpa. Last of Arihant Class could be the first of Akula built by India.Navy believes in total indigenous production.

here is a pictorial confirmation that the "satcom" dome thing in middle of sail is just the top of the escape pod which will break away from the sail as needed. the dome could indeed house some emergency beacons and dyes to alert searchers and also a hatch to get out.

U209 in our service has a escape sphere. american subs dont seem to have it, instead opting for lockout chambers where a few at a time can escape using special suits.
http://www.navy.mil/navydata/cno/n87/us ... capex.html

scorpene and kilo dont have it.

not sure if any other subs in active service have escape pods.

Interestingly, Ajai Shukla's article states that SBC is 'across the water' from where the INS Chakra is berthed. Conveniently, no pic shows the scene right behind - every one of them is an angular shot that shows the front or back of the Chakra with the background right behind the sub invisible. Even the Reuters pic of Def Min Antony speaking at the induction has the Chakra conning tower in the background . They seem to have done a nice job of ensuring that the abode of the Arihant and Aridaman aren't shown.

You want your mithai? Then check this out....some interesting shots of Chakra and other Akula boats, not to mention some info that I never knew. I must say though...she is one mean looking boat and just huge!

Captain Ashokan's comments on her are a matter of great pride for India! This is a red letter day not just for the Indian Navy, but for every Indian. Vande Mataram!

http://silenthuntergm.forumfree.it/?t=47020049

By the way, Captain Asokan is actually Commodore Asokan. If I can decipher the info in the link below, he is 1980 NDA batch. See below;

Dragon Slayer
India's first nuclear-powered submarine INS Chakra all set to hit seas

http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/ins- ... 82353.html
The new submarine is free from critical restrictions imposed by the erstwhile Soviet Union on an earlier nuclear submarine acquired, also named Chakra, on a three-year lease in 1988. The old Chakra could not be used in war. The new one can.
The delays have resulted in an anomaly: The Chakra's commanding officer Captain P. Asokan has to contend with four other captains on board, officers promoted to their next rank during the seven-year wait.
The Chakra has been retrofitted with a fin-mounted spherical escape sphere. In an emergency, the entire 100-member crew can fit into the 20-foot wide, 50-foot tall sphere and ascend to the surface.
Crewmen say they are overawed by the size of their vessel. "It's incredible," says one submariner. "It's like being on board a large surface ship. One of our Kilo class submarines could fit into the Chakra's control room," he says.

Polite Reminder
Polite Reminder

Defence Minister A K Antony took a dig at Russian Ambassador Alexander M Kadakin at the induction ceremony of the nuclear powered submarine INS Chakra that has been taken on lease from Russia. Before starting on his prepared speech where he praised the Indo-Russian strategic partnership, he asked Kadakin to ensure that the Gorhkov aircraft carrier is refurbished on time. Reminding Kadakin that Russia has promised delivery of the much delayed ship by early next year, Antony said an even bigger function would take place when it arrives.
