Vivek K, I objected to you calling it DDMitis considering who it was from. Your misinterpretation of what was said by itself would not have been a problem. Anyone can make that mistake. If you did not check who made the original statement as well before replying, then you can hardly blame me for calling it out.
Re: Su-30MKI: News and Discussion - August 9, 2014
Wow! I'm sorry i don't share your sensitivity over a non-issue. And the correction was pointed out by another Admin. Your repeated harassment is not appreciated. The way twitter posts are posted on the forum, it is also difficult to make out who the poster is.nachiket wrote:Vivek K, I objected to you calling it DDMitis considering who it was from. But if you chose to take uncalled for umbrage, then that is your prerogative.

Any information about range with IR Homing? Just IR or radar too?
Re: Su-30MKI: News and Discussion - August 9, 2014
I think 110 km now,160 km later with the Er Astra. Astra is to be alsointegrated with the 29s,29Ks,M2Ks except for the Rafale.Tejas to come too.I recollect a few air shows ago,a DRDO boffin telling me about Astra ,then of relatively modest interest, and how it would be a real game-changer for the IAF when inducted. That moment has now come. What is particularly pleasing is the low cost of Astra when compared with Meteor, etc. Equally important is the first AESA radar fitted to the Jags, Darin-3 std., of the ELTA - 2052
AESA radar. Not sure what self defence AAMs the Jags will be able to carry in addition to their payloads, plus the overwing mounts .

Re: Su-30MKI: News and Discussion - August 9, 2014
There was some post few years ago - i dont remember when - that India will become self-reliant in missiles and sensors and much of radars in the next decade across most of the platforms. that might come true. we might still import some silver bullets i guess.
Re: Su-30MKI: News and Discussion - August 9, 2014
DRDO head Satheesh Reddy has said in an interview that by 2023-24 India will be totally self reliant in Sensor & Seekers.
Re: Su-30MKI: News and Discussion - August 9, 2014
Would be interesting to have dual sensors , only two AAM missiles , one Israeli and one Chinese have dual sensorsjamwal wrote:Any information about range with IR Homing? Just IR or radar too?
Re: Su-30MKI: News and Discussion - August 9, 2014
The Astra IR will be slightly smaller then the Astra MK1 and is expected to have a maximum range of upto 60 Kms. For an IR missile, this is great and will put it on par with the Mica-IR and even better than ASRAAM. The new larger indigenous focal plan array has been the real game changer!!
Astra MK1 is expected to cost around Rs. 7-8 crores each. The price can reduce if the quantity is increased. The MK2 version will cost a little more. However, given that we will require these missiles in the thousands to equip the Su-30MKIs, Mig-29s, Tejas and maybe M2K as well, the prices may reduce.

Re: Su-30MKI: News and Discussion - August 9, 2014
I was looking at one of the videos on youtube that spoke about desi upgrade options for Su-30 MKI fleet. but the video ended by saying that the update might end up making the fighter heavier.
If it does end up making the fighter heavier, why cant we just remove the thrust vectoring system. That alone per the previous discussions should make the fighter lighter by 500Kg's.
I know that we might have to end up writing the FBW code, but how tough would it be to rewrite it?

Re: Su-30MKI: News and Discussion - August 9, 2014
TVC gives great manouvreability for air combat ,snap missile evasive capability too. It's one of the key factors making the aircraft what it is.The increased weight cannot be excessive as mostly avionics and radar are being considered for replacement. If newer engines are also progressively introduced at some point of time ,the weight issue shouldn't be a problem. I would advocate also building a few prototypes with the new engines that are being used on the SU-57/35 to see how much extra performance they give. The only reason for no new engines appears to be budgetary considerations for the time being. The biggest kick I've experienced was walking underneath the SU-30's fuselage when it first arrived!
