Konkurs similarly as an ATGM that was imported from Russia.

MOD Annual report talked of 95% 78.6 and 71 % indigenization back in 2018-2019 (Pg 74) which means only Konkurs had any appreciable additional indigenization under way.
---

For the 2 indigenous torpedoes, since Whitehead was part of the banned finmeccania/leonardo (nd the ban was only recently lifted), it is unlikely to be the 1% direct import. Not sure of the policy or loophole if a Tier 1 was to buy from a banned Tier II

Pvt co developing 250-300km range guided rockets for India.

JSR Dynamics, the company founded by former vice chief of air staff Air Marshal (retd) Shirish Deo, is at an advanced stage of developing a guided rocket of 324 mm calibre. On completion of the project, it is expected to be the first ever weapon system of this kind in India under the above-300 mm caliber category.

It is billed to outperform the existing arsenal of similar systems with the forces, and also counter the A300 type of rockets with the Pakistani army. Currently, the Indian defence forces have the Russian Smerch rocket under this category. Smerch has a caliber of 300 mm.

The 324 mm rocket of JSR has been designed to have a larger caliber and a longer range, said Deo. The Smerch rockets with India are unguided weapons, he said.

The JSR rocket on the other hand is expected to have a range of 250 to 300km along with guided capacity, making it more precise on the target. The Smerch rocket has a range of around 100km. Deo says even with the advanced features there are plans to sell the rocket at a price lower than the current price of acquisition of other systems.

The design has been made and the guidance system would be ready soon. JSR is in talks with a European company to provide highly specific impulse propellent. If it works out, some of the units may be sent for filling. The warhead would be made by JSR.

The propellent gives a push to the rocket, and explosion is created by the warhead.

The rocket is being independently developed by JSR using its own funds and is not against any request for proposal by the defence forces. On completion, the company plans to put it up before the army for evaluation. The company is open for exports to friendly countries too, he said.

Once ready, the rockets are expected to be a game changer for the forces. This would also be the first of its kind of weapon designed and made in India, said Deo.

Work is under way in both private sector and defence public sector undertakings (DPSUs) for making the guided Pinaka rockets. However, Pinaka is of 224 mm caliber, and a shorter range. The guided Pinaka rockets have range of 70km. As against this, the conventional Pinaka can be fired upto 40km.

JSR Dynamics was formed by Deo after he retired from service. The current investment stands at Rs63 crore. “We believe in operating at rather low margins as profit is not the motive,” he said.

After the surface fired rockets, there are plans to make a variant which can be shot from fighter planes too.

DRDO hands over tech to pvt firms for production of cold-weather clothing for armed forces.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has handed over to five Indian companies indigenously-developed technology for producing extreme cold-weather clothing for the armed forces. The technology was handed over as part of the government's efforts to hand-hold Indian defence firms to produce high-quality products required by the armed forces.

"Chairman of DRDO G Satheesh Reddy handed over technology for indigenous extreme cold weather clothing system (ECWS) to five Indian companies on December 27," the defence ministry said.

It said the ECWS is required by the Indian Army for its sustained operations in glacier and Himalayan peaks.

Till recently, the Army has been importing extreme cold weather clothing and related items for the troops deployed in high altitude regions.

"The DRDO designed ECWCS is an ergonomically designed modular technical clothing with improved thermal insulation and physiological comfort based on the insulation required at various ambient climatic conditions in Himalayan regions during different levels of physical activity," the ministry said in a statement.

It said the three-layered ECWCS is designed to suitably provide thermal insulation over a temperature ranging from 15 degrees Celsius to minus 50 degree celsius.

RSP steel to be used by Indian Navy for making submarines.

The Rourkela Steel Plant, a unit of Maharatna public sector undertaking, has received a certificate from the Indian Navy for producing high strength steel for making submarines, a statement said on Sunday.

A high-level navy delegation led by Rear Admiral R Vishwanathan interacted with SR Suryavanshi, executive director (works) and other senior officers of the Odisha based RSP here on January 13 for commercial production of DMR grade speciality steel, it said.

Senior officers of the chief minister's office and SAIL headquarters also attended the meeting virtually.

During the interaction, Vishwanathan said, "As a policy, the Indian Navy is using indigenous steel for its ship and submarine manufacturing. The RSP is fulfilling the needs of a tough and meticulous customer like the Indian Navy for the last 10 years...commencement of commercial production of the submarine grade steel will further strengthen our association."

He also hailed the RSP for its efforts in the field of environment and corporate social responsibility.

The RSP has so far supplied more than 7,000 tonne of steel, adhering to stringent quality specifications for use in various naval applications, a source of the unit said.

The special plate plant of the RSP that is dedicated for making steel for the defence sector has been relentlessly working towards developing new grades of customised products that can absorb high ballistic impact, the statement said.

The high-quality steel is being developed with years of research and several rounds of testing, it added.

Very cool. There is an IITM startup called Planys that also has developed an UUV for performing industrial inspections etc.

Based on the dimensions, these are more of sensors than shooters. Since they can be far away from a mothership, they can even sanitize an area with active sonar, which gives them an advantage over passive sonobuoys. Swarm UUVs combined with standoff torpedoes like SMART will be deadly! Down the road, we will hopefully see UCUV (C for combat) too

Actually cost will be low and endurance will be high of sensor only platform in remote areas. But SMART should also be available on ships that could be in vicinity of sensors, reducing the detection to shooting reaction time. I'm pretty sure a VLS version of mini SMART is in works or say a 100Km SMART in QUAD launchers. Sensor only platforms can also benefit from non-military cooperation Indian pvt players can seek from abroad. Battery endurance is as much a problem statement for civilian applications, especially EVs.

These UUV clusters with mini-Smart can arm the ASW 700tons ships we have in making. The whole proposition, given our current capabilities can be deployed in 2-3 years, about the time ASW ships will come into place.

You are probably right. He could be sought after for legal and "other" reasons by foreign defence companies . he seems to be really concerned about DPP & blanket embargos on a ever-increasing, wide range of products due to AtmaNirbarBharat. Maybe that is a loss of business, loss of "consultant" fees for his company-

Check this: https://www.tpci.in/indiabusinesstrade/ ... roduction/

The need of the armed forces for state-of-the-art equipment is so urgent that they cannot afford to wait for the Indian industry to catch up with the technologically advanced equipment made abroad. Besides, with availability of funds being a perennial problem for the MoD, there is no guarantee for the Indian industry that it will be able to sell the products it makes to the MoD, which is the sole buyer in the monopsonic defence market, thus dissuading them from making heavy investment in R&D.

The author is same for both articles, Amit Cowshish. He shows different credentials in each article. In the earlier one from Sept 2020 he is "Consultant, Manohar-Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analysis", and in the latest of Jan 2021, he is "former Financial Advisor (Acquisition), Ministry of Defence".

I have no doubt both are the same person, may be he is now looking for a job ! Both his articles have internal contradictions.

Some of the points in the article were reasonable
For example, it directs the DPSUs that the indigenised products should invariably be cheaper than the cost of importing them. This is not always possible, especially in relation to critical items for which the demand may be quite low. The DPSUs are commercial organisations which would anyway indigenise any item if it made commercial sense to do so. If, however, they are expected to go in for indigenisation on strategic considerations, the indigenised product is unlikely to be invariably cheaper.
This is a fair point. Either we should decide that we want to indigenize products because it gives us autonomy (in which case we should not worry about the cost), or we should adjust the cost formula to take into account that the money spent is within the country.

Also note that to be a "Navaratna", financial performance is considered. So the motivation to indigenize components, when they are more costly when indigenized, might be quite low.

How this little-known Faridabad-based manufacturer ‘geared’ itself up for India’s LCA Tejas fighter jet.

Faridabad-based Sanauto Engineers is a little-known yet significant player in aerospace, oil & gas, construction equipment, and other sectors. Particularly in the aerospace sector, the MSME led by Vinod Karwa has been manufacturing aerospace landing gears, its parts, and assemblies. It has already been working with aerospace heavyweights Boeing and Airbus for around 10 years and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for its helicopters. However, that didn’t get Karwa to straightaway be a part of the upcoming variant of the Tejas fighter aircraft indigenously being built by India.

“We used to earlier make electrical components for Hindustan Motors. After its production was suspended, we ventured into the aerospace segment back in 2009 and participated in different fairs showcasing our technology. Gradually, we started working with Boeing and Airbus, specializing in gear parts manufacturing,” Karwa told Financial Express Online.

Designed by the Aeronautical Development Agency under the Department of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and manufactured by HAL, the light combat aircraft programme was started back in 1984. So far, HAL and DRDO have worked on multiple variants – MK1, MK1A, MK2, a navy version and a trainer version. MK2, which is a 4.5 generation fighter, is expected to be rolled out this year with the first flight next year. India is also looking at a stealth aircraft dubbed as Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), which would be a fifth-generation fighting machine, and would reportedly be rolled out in 2024 with an expected first flight in 2025.

While Karwa didn’t disclose the variant he is working for with DRDO and HAL citing confidentiality, he noted that private enterprises were invited to be a part of the upcoming variant under the Make in India campaign.

“They earlier wanted to develop everything in-house but under the Make in India campaign, private enterprises are now also being engaged for the upcoming version. We are one of the vendors working on different parts of the aircraft. In our case, we are developing landing gear actuators that are part of the gear retraction and extension device,” Karwa said.

Currently, the production timeline for the variant hasn’t been finalised but Karwa has got the prototype ready. “Even as we had prior experience, we weren’t gifted the contract right away. There were multiple discussions, physical visits to our plant in Faridabad beginning from 2020 and showcasing of our production capabilities with exact quality standards required without any deviation before the design of the product was shared with us.”

Sanauto is through with the development stage of the part and has already got it approved. The final production would be underway once there is direction by DRDO and HAL. The product prototype development cost was around Rs 1.20 crore. “We are happy that we are contributing to boosting the defence capabilities of the country. While the authorities are planning to begin production by 2025, it might take some more time. The requirement for the actuators would be for a fleet of over 100 new jets of the upcoming variant,” said Karwa.

India’s defence budget lays out more money for local contracts, a new independent approval body and leaves a quarter for R&D
The Indian government has earmarked 68% of its procurement budget for buying from domestic players.
Moreover, the government will be opening up defence research and development (R&D) to the larger industry for their contribution — this includes big wig companies, startups and academica. Around 25% of the defence R&D budget will be earmarked for collaboration.

Just shows that all this is hanging by a thread and any change in govt in future will lead to the 100% import days ( with the services gleefully joining in ordering their wish lists from brochures and babu/netas signing juicy deals to make it a win-win).
Even this govt and their arm twisting couldn't make the IA to accept the Arjun/ATAGs/ Dhanush/Nag etc so cant see things getting better in future esp with any govt change ( if and when it happens)

Capex for IA reduced + it also went underutilised by 30%
Cant figure out how IA cant read the writing on the wall. They probably underused their CAPEX cz they were waiting for import orders to be placed. IA behaves absurdly.

The author certainly under estimates the importance of seal rings, nuts, bolts, etc. They will be consumed most during maintenance.
They are not being designed for home appliances. Military Operating conditions are harsh & stressful. Lot of things needs to be considered while designing, lots of trade offs & weight optimizations etc.
