Atleast on this issue Army may not any role to play. There is subsequent CAG report of 2015 which points out that ARDE developed Launcher tube failed again in 2015. SAAB has access to technology of only 50% components and even that has not been transferred inspite of 10 years having passed. This is fxxk up of MOD, ARDE, OFB that they neither sanctioned adequate funds for R&D nor negotiated effective ToT agreement.

KMML’s first consignment of titanium sponge for Indian Navy

The maiden consignment of titanium sponge produced by the titanium sponge plant (TSP) of the public sector Kerala Minerals and Metals Limited (KMML) for strategic purposes was despatched from the company at Chavara, near here, on Monday morning.

The consignment comprising 4.5 metric tonnes meant for the Indian Navy loaded in a truck was flagged off to Kochi by KMML Managing Director K.K. Roy Kurien in the presence of the titanium sponge unit employees.

Hitherto, this product from the KMML was purchased only by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on a buy-back arrangement. The ISRO had funded the Rs.95-crore TSP based on a technology developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation.

With the commissioning of the KMML TSP in 2011, India joined a group of only seven countries to produce the strategic metal. The plant was commissioned with the aim of making India self-sufficient in titanium sponge.

While the defence sector of the country requires about 1,500 MT of titanium sponge annually, this is the first time that indigenously produced titanium sponge for strategic applications was being purchased by a defence wing from the KMML.

The KMML titanium sponge product is certified by the Hyderabad-based Regional Centre for Military Airworthiness, Midhani. The TSP has capacity to produce 500 MT annually..

Havent heard of it in production.

Have we finally run out of excuses for inducting the Nag?

The first missile was fired in the “worst time window” on 28 September. The missile hit the target precisely near turret location. A bull’s eye hit was scored as confirmed by officials of the Indian Army present at the spot. The second flight test was carried out with an objective of proving 4 km range capability of Infrared Imaging (IIR) Seeker. TTS was once again used as target and thermal mapping from a T-72 tank to TTS was carried out. The missile hit the target bang on – this time on the engine location of the target.


Operational target scenario presents mixed contrast of the target with respect to surrounding sand, shrubs and background clutter. IIR Seeker is capable of handling complex scenarios.


Independent Stabilized Sighting Systems for the Gunner and the Commander, Fire Control System, Launcher Platform, Drive System and Missile Operating Stations are the main subsystems of NAMICA. The Commander’s Panoramic Sight (CPS) is used by the Crew Commander for target surveillance and exploitation of Hunter-Killer capability. The Gunner Sight is used for target acquisition and missile firing. Six ready-to-fire ‘NAG’ Missiles can be mounted on the Launcher Platform. Amphibious trials & mobility trials have been successful

DRDO seems to be worried that there will be more excuses, seen from the multiple times they emphasize (in that article) that army personnel were present and witnessed the bulls eye hit. :|

<OT>I have few noob questions -

1> Are there any basic differences in IIR seeker used in ATGM and an AAM?
2> Can the later one, due to its range and agility, be used in ATGM roles? I guess only major difference is a specialized warhead (fragmented Vs shaped charge).

On the issue of the NAG discussion, does the Army plan to adopt a similar testing regime to the Hellfire anti-tank missile that it is acquiring with the AH-64 Apache purchase? I think not. Phoren is always better, in fact so amazing that it does need testing at all.

Only three projects in the above link have a completion date of Under Revision. You guessed it. Tejas and Tejas-related.

AAM use NIR and MWIR seekers. ATM use LWIR.

A team of researchers has discovered semi-conductivity in bismuth at around -273 C°

Researchers at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, have made a landmark discovery that challenges the conventional understanding of superconductivity.

A team, lead by Dr. S. Ramakrishnan of the Department of Condensed Matter Physics and Material Sciences at TIFR, has discovered bismuth semi-metal in bulk form becoming a superconductor when the temperature is lowered to 530 microKelvin (about -273 degree C), which is three orders of magnitude higher than the theoretical prediction. The results were published in the journal Science .

“The Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory [which explains superconductivity in most low Tc superconductors] cannot explain the superconductivity seen in bismuth,” said Dr. Ramakrishnan, the corresponding author of the paper. “The discovery demands a new theory and a new mechanism to understand superconductivity in bismuth. This discovery provides an alternative path for discovering new superconducting materials which are very different from the conventional superconductors.”

Superconductors are materials that conduct electricity with no resistance whatsoever. To become superconductors, the element should have mobile electrons, and these electrons should come together to form pairs, known as Cooper pairs. Unlike other elements in the periodic table, bismuth has unusual phenomenon — while metallic superconductors have one mobile electron per atom, bismuth has only one mobile electron per 100,000 atoms. Since carrier density is so small, people did not believe that bismuth will superconduct.

Also, bismuth’s electronic energy (Fermi energy) is comparable to the lattice (phonon) energy. “So the conventional BCS theory and its extensions which assume that Fermi energy is two to three orders of magnitude higher than phonon energy is not valid in bismuth. We know that if we prove superconductivity in bismuth, it will be from a different mechanism,” Dr. Ramakrishnan said.

“Superconductivity in bismuth is puzzling. Even at 10 milliKelvin, people did not find superconductivity in bismuth. So they gave up nearly 20 years back,” said Om Prakash Shukla from TIFR and the first author of the paper.

PES University bags Rs 2.2 crore DRDO project

Hyderabad-based Research Centre Imarat, which is a part of DRDO, has awarded a project called Sindhu Netra to PES University. The estimated cost of the project is around `2.2 crore.
Dr Balasubramnya Murthy, Vice-Chancellor of PES University, said, “This project by DRDO will help in identifying suspicious ships through sattelite imaging.”

Based on this DRDO report, can we expect mass production of the Nag and Helina? Looks like the 4 Km local IIR seeker works just fine:

Anti-tank Nag Missile System demonstrated Successful:

Nag, the third generation, lock-on-before-launch (LOBL), fire-and-forget, anti-tank guided missile, indigenously developed by the Defence Research and Development Laboratory, Hyderabad, scored a “bull’s eye” successfully hitting targets up to 4 km away in the final developmental trials. The Thermal Target System (TTS) was used as target for the missile. TTS simulated a target similar to an operational T-72 tank. For the flight test, a T-72 tank was moved for one hour and positioned at a range of 3.2 km. Thermal mapping from tank to TTS was carried out for generating thermal signature. NAG has ‘Top attack’ and ‘Front Attack’ capabilities. It is capable of defeating the heaviest type of armour including ‘reactive’ and ‘composite’ armour of the futuristic main battle tanks. Critical technologies indigenously developed for NAG Missile System include a high resolution IIR Seeker developed by RCI, Hyderabad. The performance of the Seeker is well established in guided flight tests of NAG. The second trial validated the enhanced 4-km range capability of IIR seeker, which guides the missile to the target after its launch. NAG, which has been developed to support both mechanised infantry and airborne forces of the Indian Army, is designed to destroy modern main battle tanks and other heavily armoured targets. It can be launched from both land and air-based platforms. Technologies for ‘Tandem Warhead’, ‘Control System’ and ‘Solid Propulsion System’ for NAG have been successfully developed by ARDE, Pune, RCI and ASL, Hyderabad. NAG Missile Carrier (NAMICA) is BMP2 based Infantry Combat Vehicle (ICV) suitably configured for firing ‘NAG’ Missile. NAMICA is an advanced system developed by DRDO. The development trials were conducted with an objective of proving higher range capability of high resolution IIR seeker. NAG Weapon System is ready for induction into Indian Army.

RUDRA is a remotely operated vehicle designed for offensive operations mainly in urban areas for hostage situations and counter insurgency missions. It is equipped with a 7.62mm caliber Light Machine Gun and a AGS-30 Grenade Launcher with belt feed ammunition.

Static Testing of Large Solid Rocket Motor
A large case-bonded rocket motor of 12 T class was static tested successfully on 17 November 2016 at Advanced Centre for Energetic Materials(ACEM), Nasik. The composite case rocket motor was designed and realized indigenously and belongs to the Mark III version. The main objective of the static test was to validate the design for optimized EPDM insulation where a reduction of 80 kg was carried out compared to the Mark I version, and to evaluate the augmentation factors. The motor has a submerged nozzle with provision for actuation,which is also realized indigenously.The 12 T class solid rocket motor is one of the largest rocket motors with EPDM liner in a composite casing being processed in India. The propellant is based on hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene(HTPB)—Ammonium Perchlorate (AP)—Aluminium (Al)-based composition.
The complete process technology for realization of the solid rocket motor has been developed and matured at ACEM.

BEL Annual Report

BEL has successfully completed supply of all systems of Akash Missiles to Indian Airforce.
Supply for project L-70 Gun Upgrade program commenced. The activity involves Up-gradation of Gun for improved firing performance in local mode for Air Defense application.

During the year 2015-16, important milestones achieved by R&D engineers in some of the critical R&D projects are;
a) Completion of NC-NC demo of the complex Integrated EW System for Mountainous Terrain.
b) Completion of internal evaluation of Medium Power Radar – Arudra jointly with DRDO and commencement of User trials.
c) Completion of internal evaluation of avionics grade indigenized version of Receiver Front-end Unit resulting in sales.
d) Completion of internal evaluation of indigenous Laser Range Finder for Air Defense application and commencement of integration & testing with AD Fire Control Radar – Atulya.
e) Finalization of System Architecture of Indigenous System-on-Chip (SoC) and progressing design activities.
f) Completion of internal evaluation of Commander TI Sight for T-90 tank and commencement of User Trials.
g) Initiation of design & development of major R&D projects with collaborative partners like 3D Air Surveillance Radar, LTE based e-node B & UE, New Generation Sonars, etc.

Development of New Products
Integrated Sonar Suite for S3/S4 Platform consists of Passive Sonar, Active Sonar, Intercept Sonar, Obstacle Avoidance Sonar, Own noise measurement system and Underwater Communication System. The system is mounted on submarine for underwater surveillance purpose.

Very impressive rocket motor.Lot of coded words in the description. So they reduced the weigh of insulation by 80 kg in Mark III version. In essence the isulation is made like a sock and the composite wound over it. Its then cured together and hydro tested for pressure. Composite case allows higher pressure in addition to weigh savings.
Energy is proportional to burn area and pressure.
HtBP allows soft propellant which precludes cracks.

Wonder how many pour for the 12 tonne motor. One or two? Or may be 3.
