The laboratories in the Electronics and Communication Cluster have production orders worth ` 5,500 crore and programmes worth over ` 10,000 crore are on the anvil. Eight Medium Power S-Band Active Aperture Phased Array Radar, Arudhra, worth ` 800 crore, 18 Low Level Transportable Radar, Ashwini, worth ` 1,200 crore, and 55 S-band 3D Surveillance Radar, Bharani, worth ` 500 crore are under production. Three flight-worthy synthetic Aperture Radar for ground imaging have been qualified. Prototype of AESA Radar for LCA has been validated on roof top. A 2 kW Directed Energy Laser Beam System has been integrated on to a Transportable Shelter and has been demonstrated successfully up to a range of 1 km against moving targets on the ground and in the air. Three numbers of LWIR Type 2 Super Lattice (T2SL) Detectors have been realized through M/s IIMC, Israel, by joint funding between DRDO and MoD, Israel. Based upon this detector, IRDE has realized a Thermal Imager. Laser fence developed by DARE is in operational deployment at its designated location and is working satisfactorily. DLRL has realised the ESM and CSM systems under the Samudrika programme for Navy and Air Force. SDR systems for the Navy has been developed and SDRs for other services are nearing completion.

HAL to look at commercial borrowing to fund new projects
India’s military plane-maker Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is looking at commercial borrowings to fund part of its Rs 17,500 crore planned expenditure to build new fighters and helicopters for the armed forces.
“In the month of March, we may be going in for loans from banks to fund our projects. The overall expected investments, as of now, is approximately Rs 17,500 crores spread over the next 5-6 years,” said T Suvarna Raju, Chairman of HAL, at the 11th Aero India show in Bengaluru on Wednesday. He did not specify the quantum of debt the firm plans to raise.

Since having the numbers and the knowledge base to internalize DE sub building are both equally important...why does IN/GoI allow the sub force to languish on both respects?
What is preventing us from immediately plugging gaps in AIP DE number gaps vis a vis China. Assuming we need 30 SSKs, it seems to be a prudent thing to say do the following, (MII needs, tech needs all aside for a moment)
1. Build 10 more kilos both in Russia and India parallely (we could test Indias domestic PAFC AIP as needed to integrate them in later kilo SSKs)
2. Ask TKMS via G2G for half a dozen U212 derivative incl. Siemens vaunted PEMFC AIP even if it means a few subs off the shelf from germany.
with our current 14 subs.. we might have 30 odd subs by 2030 (the PLAN might have 3 SSKs for each one of ours by then though)
We have experience building Type 209s, Kilos, Scorpenes.. we should be able to churn out a decent DE sub with few years intensive efforts no?

The WHAP/TATA Kestrel platform could be used to increase the mechanization of our infantry. While the core can continue to have BMP-2 and in future, FICV based solution, other infantry units can be converted to these wheeled APC platforms. Would come a considerably reduced price to FICV but add mobility and firepower at the same time.

In 2014, when Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi attended the annual awards ceremony of the Defence R&D Organisation (DRDO), he jolted the self-congratulatory annual function by insisting on timely delivery and innovation.
Criticising what he termed the DRDO’s “chalta hai” (lackadaisical) attitude, Modi placed it under a scanner that led in early 2015 to the exit of Avinash Chander, then the DRDO’s well-respected chief.
Two and a half years later, that reformist impulse has vanished, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) no longer demanding performance from a DRDO that functions much as it did in 2014. On Friday, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley, distributing annual awards to a DRDO, expressed happiness that “the DRDO is becoming an important instrument in the effort for self-reliance.”
This effusive praise came even though none of the three “indigenous products” handed over to the navy on Friday were path-breaking developments. The USHUS-2 submarine sonar system was only an improvement on the USHUS-1 that was fitted a decade ago in the navy’s Kilo-class submarines. Similarly, the “ring laser gyroscope” based navigation system has also been around for years.
Given this modest delivery, it appears incongruous that Jaitley awarded fifteen DRDO scientists with the “Scientist of the Year” award.
{The criticism is valid if the 15 scientists were awarded for working on these 3 incremental improvements. Now lets examine these 'incremental' improvements. The USHUS-2 is an improvement on USHUS-1 which is a decade old. In a decade all the electronics becomes obsolete with difficult to obtain spare parts and net result is a total redesign is required with new components. Even US is finding out that decadal change out of electronics due to parts obsolescence is needed. The RLG is a critical technology. The key part in future weapons is the ability to function even under very high lateral accelerations. This is what enables the Brahmos, Nirbhay etc. So this is a great thing. Only a couple of vendors in the whole world with lots of govt R&D funding are there. So once again a breakthrough product development is being recognized.}
“The DRDO cannot treat incremental improvements to its own systems as breakthrough triumphs. Continuous improvement should be a matter of routine for DRDO systems”, says a serving navy admiral.

Nor is the navy impressed by Myanmar’s order for $37.9 million worth of the DRDO’s advanced lightweight torpedoes (TAL). It is hardly a secret the TAL is modelled on the A244S lightweight torpedo that Italian company, WASS, supplied the Indian Navy.
{Torpedoes are the first guided missile projects of the modern military services. Again if DRDO has managed to copy the lightweight torpedo its a great achievement. Am sure they had their challenges and overcome them to realize this product. Sounds like sour grapes and disparaging good work. In Hindi, 'kis khet ke mooli hain?' to make such remarks.}
In 2014, Modi had tellingly criticised the communication gap between scientists who remained ensconced in their laboratories, and the soldiers on the borders. The PM wondered why the DRDO could not deliver simple but crucial items in a soldier’s personal gear, bringing down the weight of a water bottle from 300 grams to 150 grams, or developing lighter boots to reduce fatigue.
Yet, today, with the soldier’s personal gear as cumbersome and poorly designed as ever, Jaitley lauded “The role of those [scientists] who remain faceless and work in some important field.”
In 2014, Modi had suggested the DRDO empower younger scientists, starting with manning five of its 52 laboratories exclusively with scientists under 35 years of age. Yet, only lip service is paid to empowering younger scientists.
{Speaking from knowledge, Defence business is complicated. A young scientist won't have the experience to work on these products. Its time spent in actual development that matters in making reliable products. You need a good mixt of new, middle and old experience people.}
The PM had also criticised the DRDO’s endemic time delays in delivering equipment. He directed that, instead of re-inventing the wheel by designing indigenous versions of equipment already in service in advanced militaries, the DRDO should develop futuristic equipment before advanced countries did so.

Yet, the bulk of what DRDO works on --- such as the Tejas fighter, unmanned aerial vehicles, warship systems, artillery guns, the Arjun tank, etc --- all constitute equipment that has been in service worldwide for decades.

DRDO chief, S Christopher, claimed that the defence ministry had cleared orders of DRDO equipment worth 2.56 lakh crore rupees; with one lakh crore worth of orders cleared in the last two years alone. In fact, “clearing” a procurement is a preliminary step of the acquisition process, with the majority of clearances never actually resulting in an order being contracted.
{So is the idea that DRDO has to be in complete charge from 'design to production' or is this general rant? Rs 1 lakh crores orders out of Rs. 2.56 lakh crores( ~40%) in last two years shows the inertia in the procurement system that was pushed away by Parrikar. And if its not contracted the fault lies with MoD.}

Looks like this will be one of the standard PGM in the IAF's arsenal in the near future; 1000/year planned....

Will need large wing spans.
Indranil, can you do an sizing calculation for 100 km range for a release from 42,000 feet or (14,000 meters)?
Accuracy requirements in one sentence are contradictory.
Blast and fragmentation accuracy would be 10 m.
Penetration would be 10 feet!!!!

SDB I, SDBII and Spice 250 all fit that performance. Heavier/larger winged JDAM variants will hit 70-100 km too so it benchmarks nicely with what is out there.ramana wrote:100km range is challenging.

Our own SAAW is 250lbs 100km glided bomb, apart from those listed by brar_w above.
We have Garuthma which is 1000kg class which is tested for 100km. In smaller bombs, we have HSLD bombs of 250kg which are non-winged which gives 30km range from 13km height.
For 100km range one would need L/D ~ 8 considering it has no initial velocity. Considering M=0.8 as launch velocity, this itself gives forward range of ~15km. So in total say L/D of 6-7 is needed. Shouldn't be difficult to achieve.

Indranil, can you do an sizing calculation for 100 km range for a release from 42,000 feet or (14,000 meters)?
Accuracy requirements in one sentence are contradictory.
Blast and fragmentation accuracy would be 10 m.
Penetration would be 10 feet!!!!
Some brochuritis is driving these specs on same kit.
And shelf life is a function of storage environments.
Is it realistic?

INDIA TO USE INDIGENOUS OPERATING SYSTEM TO ENHANCE CYBER SECURITY
In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's push for enhancing cyber security, the Indian Army is testing the indigenous BOSS, (Bharat Operating System Solutions) to guard its communication and information networks from espionage by foreign players.
In his maiden address to the senior commanders of the three services, the prime minister had asked them to guard against the threats in the cyber domain.
The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) has developed this highly secure operating system. The system has successfully passed a crash test by the DRDO and Indian Army.
