Astra Microwave has bagged the deal to make the Uttam MK2 prototype. Private companies are now learning the trick to beat the DPSU in the "L1" business.

Things are slowly moving in the right direction.

Thanks guys. I just came back from a recent trip to some DRDO centres and wish I could feel that enthusiastic. The capacity for industrial production and R&D in the country is nowhere near what most BRFites think it is. I sometimes feel it is a wonder that anything at all is achieved!
its ok, Csaurabh Saar, maybe you guys and many like you will be the ones who will form the building blocks for what is required. Keep chipping away towards the final goal.

VEM Tech to set up ₹1,000 crore integrated defence factory in Sangareddy.

VEM Technologies, the city-based firm that became the first private sector unit to make a central fuselage for Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas being manufactured by Hindustran Aeronautics Limited (HAL), is scaling up its defence manufacturing capabilities by setting up a ₹1,000 crore integrated defence facility at Yelgoi near Zaheerabad in Sangareddy.

Spread over 511 acres, this exclusive defence factory, to come up in the next five years, will be involved in making next generation weapon systems end-to-end, including missiles, radars, seekers, engines, avionics, fighter planes, helicopters and the likes, employing close to 2,000 persons. This will also serve as a defence export processing zone to cater to the overseas market, said VEM Technologies Chairman and Managing Director V. Venkata Raju on Sunday.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the State government was signed by Mr. Raju in the presence of IT and Industries Minister K.T. Rama Rao, DRDO chairman G. Satheesh Reddy, Niti-Aayog member V.K. Saraswat, TS Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TSIIC) VC and MD E.V. Narasimha Reddy and IT secretary Jayesh Ranjan.

Dr. Reddy, also secretary of the department of defence R&D, said that the government was keen on opening up the entire defence production for the private sector and an entire missile weapons system to be made by the latter. Akash Missile being manufactured by BDL has 85% private sector contribution with several ‘tier 2 and tier 3’ contributing.

‘More orders coming’
“This is an ideal scenario where we want small scale sector to contribute and not large monopolies. Hyderabad is going to be the centre for several production facilities, including anti-drone technologies, electronic warfare and others, with at least ₹1 lakh crore orders coming by as more key technologies will be transferred by the ministry,” he said.

Mr. Raju stated that aerospace and defence company currently functions from two locations — for design and development and manufacturing facilities here. It has been a production partner with defence public sector units like BEL, HAL and others in making various systems for BrahMos, LRSAM/MRSAM, Astra missiles and so on. In fact, it has been working on its own weapon system, ASIBAL – an anti-tank guided missile system.

Mr. Rama Rao hailed the pact and reiterated the government’s support for the project and also in establishing the proposed skill development centre at Zaheerabad. The city has become a hub for defence manufacturing over decades with several public and private units established, he pointed out, and called for collaborative efforts between the Centre and State to give impetus to defence sector putting aside ‘ideological differences’ for the sake of the nation.

Dr. Saraswat recalled the growth of VEM Techologies in the last three decades and expected it to become the aerospace-defence akin to US-based ‘Lockheed Martin’. Former Union Defence Minister Pallam Raju was also present.

Today, we are at systems and subsystems level, and the new facility will help us build a full-fledged platform to develop large UAVs and helicopters. In emerging markets, we will look at larger systems, and in advanced nations we will be looking for partnerships.

Most of the systems that we develop are in-house/captive. Except for chips, most of the jobs are done in India. We have practiced R&D as our way of life. We have built R&D capabilities and teams in avionics, electromechanical systems, energetics, electro-optics, radars, and many other areas. We will be expanding in these areas in future. We will also strengthen our software capabilities to ensure cyber security. VEM is one of the large production partners for Akash, LRSAM/MRSAM, Astra and BrahMos Missile programmes supplying various systems and subsystems. The company also supplies fuselages for the Tejas programme.

Solar Industries Becomes First Indian Company To Make Fully Indigenous Weaponised Drones And Loitering Munitions.

Solar industries Ltd, a Nagpur-based Explosives and ammunition company today announced that it has successfully demonstrated its prototypes of Weaponised Drones (Hexacopter) and Loitering Munitions and become the first Indian firm to do so.

In a press note issued this afternoon, the company, already a world leader in packaged explosives and accessories, Solar Industries said it is developing an array of drones for ammunition delivery to bring a new capability to Indian armed forces. Solar Industries manufactured drones can be used in both offensive and defensive roles, it claimed. India’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen Bipin Rawat was present at the first demonstration carried out at the company’s Nagpur-based facility, the note added.

The company press statement further added that its offensive drones will be capable of dropping specially designed warheads on specified targets and returning to base. They are used to target enemy troops, bunkers, vehicles and tanks.

Solar Industries and its fully-owned subsidiary, Economic Explosives Ltd (EEL) is working in a mission mode with an aim to start production of these drones as early as in January 2022.

EEL Warheads can also be integrated with drones of other manufacturers. In a parallel development, Solar Industry’s drones in a defensive role (an Anti-Drone System) will be capable of capable of ‘Soft Kill’ using RF and GNSS Jamming system and a ‘Hard Kill’ option using Micro-missiles.

Micro Missile System is the most reliable Hard Kill System, which has been developed in-house by EEL. So far in India, EEL is the sole developer for such a capability.

The company has also embarked on manufacturing Loitering Munitions for use by the Indian armed forces. A loitering munition (also known as a suicide drone or kamikaze drone) is a weapon system category in which the munition loiters around the target area for some time, searches for targets and attacks once a target is located. Loitering munitions enable faster reaction times against concealed or hidden targets that emerge for short periods without risking high-value platforms like aircraft close to the target area, and also allow more selective targeting.

Loitering weapons worldwide have been developed for roles ranging from relatively long-range strikes and fire support down to tactical, very short-range battlefield systems that fit in a backpack. India is so far dependent on this specialized munition only through the import route. Solar Industries will be the first Indian Company to fully indigenize and develop Loitering munitions in-house. It is making several versions of the munition primarily LM-0 (1.5 kg, 15 km), LM-1 (4 kg, 25 km) and LM-2 (10 kg, 100 km).

These Indian made munitions will not only be superior to the imported contemporaries in technical features and specifications but will also be almost 40 per cent cheaper. The timeline set by Solar Industries to complete this challenging task is February 2022. Large infrastructure for production, testing & evaluation of these systems is being set up in Solar Industries based in Nagpur.

It has one of the largest production facilities for HMX & its compositions in the world. So far India was dependent on imports of these products but thanks to Solar industries, these items are now being exported to many countries including the USA, Europe & Israel. In the year 2010, the company forayed into the field of Defence and became the 1st Private Company in India to produce a complete ammunition range. It also entered into the field of testing and became the first to develop a World-Class Facility in the country to determine the shell life of ammunition and energy materials based on Isothermal Micro Calorimetry (IMC) revolutionizing the existing procedure to save crore so f exchequer money and prevent Ammunition related accidents.

Triveni Engineering signs deal with GEAE Technologies to make gas turbine components.

Noida-based Triveni Industries on Monday said that it has signed a 10-year deal with US' GEAE Technology to locally manufacture certain components for its LM2500 gas turbine which powers many of the Indian Navy's vessels.

As part of the deal, Triveni will manufacture the gas turbine’s base frame, enclosure, lubricating oil skid and supply other source-controlled accessories.

The LM2500 is the chosen propulsion gas turbine for the Indian Navy for many of its surface combatant vessels, Triveni claimed in a press statement. It is also used by over 40 other navies globally.

“Triveni Group has a long history of over three decades with indigenous design and development of engineered rotary products for various naval platforms and has a long-term vision of supporting the Indian Navy in self-reliance,” said Tarun Sawhney, the managing director of Triveni.

“Currently, Triveni is working towards providing critical technology and engineered solutions on multiple fronts to Indian Navy and Indian Defence industry,” he said.

All this information should be part of BRF, So I am posting whole thread here

https://twitter.com/Indrani1_Roy/status ... 00833?s=20

1.Like you, I don’t consider license production as indigenous. Our own engine development is lagging. But is the lacuna only in the development community? Afterall, we are churning out 350 HP engines and transmissions in huge volumes with comparative ease.

2.Then why can they not be scaled up for military use? Because there is no volume to scale up. For Arjun, until recently there was only an order for 124 engines. Who will set up factory for 124 engines and their parts? Number of engines required for ships is even lower.

3.You would be happy to know that indigenous engines from 400HP to 1500 HP have now been developed and are in various stages of testing from BMP upgrades to T72s to the upcoming FRCV. Volumes matter.

4. Now let’s come to aviation engines. GE spends >$1B per year on R&D to get to the latest and greatest. The same is true for other majors like PW and RR. Yes, we are nowhere near these entities. But R&D cost is the same whether you build 1 engine or 1000 engines.

5.On that aspect too, please see what happens when you have potential for 1000s of engines. HAL is now testing its own HTSE1200 engines. These engines will replace the French engines in the hundreds of Dhruvs, LCHs and LUHs

6.And because we will have hundreds of Hawks and potentially IJTs and AJTs, a HTFE-25 has completed high-altitude testing. The HTFE-25 is not as cutting-edge as Kaveri engine, but it is at par with Adour, F124 and AI-225 engines.

7.The same is the case with 1-7kN engines. Not only GTRE’s Manik and HAL’s PTAE-7 engines. A plethora of private players are entering the frame because of the lure of 100s of such engines in UAVs, loitering munition and cruise missiles.

8.Now, let’s come to radars. It is true that our ‘sensing’ capabilities are mostly imported. Here, we cannot blame the lack of orders. Yes, it has taken us time and thank god that there was inability to import at the first whim.

9.But now the most advanced ground-based radars being deployed in India are Indian. They are world-class. Their offshoots are becoming airborne. The radar on the Netra AEW&C is our first airborne radar worth mention.

10.But since then, they ported that radar to Uttam. My friends (I am sure you can get a hold of them too) who are flying and testing this radar tell me that it has same or better performance than the 2052.

11.With all their feedback, and improved TRM manufacturing capability the next generation of Uttam-2 is now entering production. It is more compact, energy efficient and performant than Uttam-1.

12.Uttam-I was one step behind the absolute leading edge. Uttam II has closed that gap completely. Furthermore, LRDE’s growing knowledge has allowed it place the radars closer to the radomes.

13.This as you know significantly improves the aircrafts performance. E.g. LCA Mk2 has a more powerful radar than Mk1A packed in smaller nose with space for a nose mounted IRST!

14.All these technologies are also now finding their way into upgraded AEW&C and airborne maritime patrol radars. Versions of the latter are now in testing in the belly of a modified Do-228 test bed.15.Also if LR-MFR radar (shown below) is already deployed, then the primary radar for ships cannot be too far behind!

16.I am a little sad sir we don’t have good indigenous guns. Neither CIWS nor long-range weapons. I hope that Tata and Bharat Forge can solve that problem for us but where are the orders for them to sustain their DnD?

17.Where are ATAGS orders or any orders for the plethora of guns that BF has showcased?

18.But as far as missile development goes DRDL and RCI are now scorching the path: MRSAM and Brahmos are deployed. VLRSAM, NASM-SR are entering tesing

19.Even in the underwater region, our sonar capabilities are finally catching up. Almost all bow-mounted sonars are indigenous. The towed sonar is currently in testing.

20.NSTL seems to have finally turned the corner on torpedoes. Extended-range ASR have also entered testing.

21.With so much happening and especially the momentum exhibited in the last decade, I must agree with @hvtiaf that “how we have emerged” should not be met with the despondency often publicly reflected by the military brass.

22.With respect to Pakistan, we can fight a war of attrition on imported goods. We have deeper pockets. But when it comes to China, I am not sure how we could sustain on imported wares.

23.I don’t intend to go into the rhetoric of “we all stand and fall together”. But, as a by-looker the decision makers and developers don’t seem to be on the same page! Worse, we seem to be happy at snubbing at each other.

I think you obviously know the answer. They accidentally dropped the word crore. 20,000 crore rupee deal to buy 56 C295s. Though some say 22000 crore inr deal. The DRDO rwr press release references it. And that drdo subcontracy price is not mentioned

There is no tamasha here. It's an evolving process. All such policy decisions have to be refined and are work in progress. Its rare to get everything right at the first move. If the items to be indigenized can't be, then a workaround has to be found to ensure defence preparedness is not affected. That's what's being done. They are not scrapping the policy but introducing a nuanced step to ensure the policy does not sabotage our overall intent of striking a balance between capability and indigenization.

If you knew it was wrong, why post it here, in a sarcastic fashion. The back and forth consumes bandwidth and detracts from quality conversation. A simple search clearly showed it was Crore.

The reason I did the search before posting was to correct the amount. Because I got only 3-4 and all of them showed the same amount, so I concluded it to be some DDM news again.

Ashok Leyland has partnered with Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE), a premier lab of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), to develop and manufacture 600-HP indigenous engine to power futuristic combat vehicles under Atmanirbhar Bharat mission.

As the development-cum-production partner, Ashok Leyland has developed the engine in a record time despite the total lockdown due to Covid-19, according to a statement.

Defence requirements
Pravin Kumar Mehta, Distinguished Scientist and Director General, Armament & Combat Engineering Systems (ACE), inaugurated on Wednesday the testing of the engine at the Engine Development Centre of Ashok Leyland located near Chennai.

The 600-HP engine will undergo rigorous testing in lab and will be qualified for application in tanks (Light tanks or APC/ICV :?: ) Ashok Leyland will undertake series production of the engine post induction into service.

For over five decades, Ashok Leyland has developed and expanded its scope within the defence space. This partnership with CVRDE has given the company an opportunity to further innovate in the mobility space for defence requirements.
