The two big reasons why stuff like Matheswarans gets a pass is because a) our respect for the IAF (deservedly) means one doesnt want to quibble with folks like him despite their overt bias and really inflammatory claims b ) it might serve to have him & others continue to push down indigenous efforts to get their own back (sadly observed in the case of the Arjun; unbiased officers who spoke up "for" the Arjun were actually censured!). These combine to limit our options.
I agree its time some of his stuff needs rebuttals. His bias is so overt its not even funny.

If our friends like chacko or ndtv/vishnu want to give us the bandwidth, we offer to think-tank. Depending upon S/Jha (or asnyone else with narrow indian visibility alone) will not solve the problem.

Absolutely agree Shreemanji. I mentioned SJha as I was reading his recent blog on Tejas then. However, Chacko ji or Vishnu or a BRF effort will definitely be better.

A point by point rebuttal and additional a look at the committee as in if there was any presence of Engineers or Scientists or Research Scholars on the committee. After all DRDO is not just Defence but Reseach and Development too.

This committee sounds like some Track II initiative.

8. The Committee note that at present 7809 number of scientists (including Service Officers and Work Officers) are working in
Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) against the sanctioned strength of 7932 (including 7255 Scientists, 623 Service Officers an
d 54 Work Officers) (as per Govt. Orders in 2001)

The Committee also note that while the number of projects have grown multi-fold in terms of size and technological complexity keeping in view India’s strategic and tactical defence requirements but there has been no increase of scientific manpower in DRDO since 2001. The Committee feel that scientific manpower in DRDO should commensurate with the R&D requirements and projects undertaken. As intimated by the Ministry that a cabinet note for augmentation of additional posts of scientists had already been forwarded for consideration of the Government. The Committee desire that the matter may be pursued vigorously at the highest level and they are apprised of the same within three months of presentation of this report.

9. The Committee also observe that on an average of more than 65 scientists have been resigning from DRDO since 2009. Till 1st October, 2014, 23 scientists have left the organisation. The reasons given for their exodus are indicated as their personal/domestic grounds. However, the Committee opine that conducive
work environment, invigorated growth opportunities and suitable incentives can 46 control such resignations. The Committee would like to be informed about the
steps taken in this regard by the Ministry.

Performance audit of the work of scientists of DRDO
10. The Committee have also observed that there are many projects, undertaken in different DRDO labs, which are not attaining completion due to shortage of manpower. The Committee desire that all out efforts should be made by DRDO to ensure that projects undertaken by it are not delayed on account of shortage of manpower.

one would like to imagine if at least half of that 6 billion in indian rupees (and every year !!) appxly 19,000 crores INR (3 billion USD) is spend inside India ..how many jobs and infrastructure might be created !! :x

HHTs being installed in Leh to detect PLA movement

JAMMU, Feb 5: Hand Held Thermal Imagers (HHTI) – advanced yet compact, light weight night vision binoculars for long range observation and reconnaissance, are being installed along borders in Ladakh region to detect movement of People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China.

Installation process of indigenous HHT Imagers manufactured by Instruments Research & Development Establishment (IRDE), Dehradun has already begun in some areas of Leh bordering China and in a year or two, these would be installed all along the border in Ladakh region.

This was informed by Pradeep Kumar, a scientist with IRDE, Dehradun, manning IRDE lab in Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) pavilion in India Vision 2020 Mega Expo under 5-day101st Indian Science Congress presently underway at the University of Jammu.

According to him, manufactured in 2012, HHT Imagers can detect the movement with in the radius of 10 kms in any weather condition.

“Earlier we used to remain dependent on foreign thermal imagers but now the indigenous products would be available for surveillance. The HHTI operates in 3-5 um and based on 320X256 InSb FPA detector. The system can be hand-held or tripod mounted, according to operational need,” he informed. It’s 3rd generation Thermal Imager with built-in continuous zoom, high-resolution OLED display, ruggedized metal casing and is easy to operate and maintain.

Notably the Ladakh region is witnessing frequent intrusions by PLA personnel.

Another IRDE scientist K C Bahuguna, while detailing about other instruments, informs that Light Weight Laser Target Designator with Thermal Imagers too are in final stage of induction along the border areas across the country.

Presently its trials are on and it’s in the final stage of induction. Already IRDE has received 447 requirements from the Artillery.

Detailing about it, Bahuguna states that the state-of-art diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser target designator with thermal imager enables accurate terminal guidance of laser guided munitions during day and night.

Its salient features include designation of military targets upto 10 kms, built in range finder, integrated DMC & GPS, target coordinate computation, night operation with 3rd Gen. MWIR thermal imager. It operates with rechargeable Li-ion batteries and weight is below 20 kgs including all accessories.

He points out that night vision goggles, binoculars, thermal imagers are already being in Ladakh and other border areas of the country.

Given the diverse product range on display including state-of-the-art defence surveillance instruments and materials, DRDO pavilion comprising over 30 labs is attracting the maximum crowd. The pavilion is particularly huge hit among the children and the locals who are thronging it in thousands daily.

The State-run HMT Machine Tools at Kalamassery, which made a foray into defence production last year by making a ship-borne positioning mechanism called directing gears for sonars developed by DRDO lab Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL), looks set to cement its position in defence manufacturing by bagging more orders for sonar directing gear.

HMT is bracing to deliver its second directing gear, costing just over Rs 5 crore, to Bharat Electronics this month placing it in good stead to win orders for five more units for fitment on Indian naval ships.

Bharat Electronics, a central PSU, integrates complete sonar systems designed and developed by NPOL.

In a rare achievement, HMT successfully indigenised directing gear manufacture when it delivered the first of the three units for Myanmarese offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) last September. The contract, valued at Rs 16 crore, requires it to deliver two more directing gear units this year.

Sources told The Hindu that the directing gear to be delivered now would be fitted on Indian naval frigate INS Brahmaputra. “Some underwater components that are part of the directing gear would be delivered next week and the whole system before the month-end,” they said. HMT received some hand-holding by NPOL in indigenising the directing gear for the lab’s export variant hull mounted sonar, fitted on warships to track enemy submarines.

The development enthused the Indian Navy which is now contemplating retrofitting its warships with new versions of hull-mounted sonars coupled with Indian directing gears. While HMT enjoys the niche of being the only Indian manufacturer of sonar directing gears, it is bound by a pact with the Bharat Electronics which restricts it from independently manufacturing directing gears for a period of five years.

“However, there’s scope for growth as we are one of the three manufacturers of directing gear globally. With the DRDO exploring options to export Indian sonars, Indian directing gears made by us will also have a global market,” said an HMT official.

Bengaluru company develops technology for IAF - IANS, Business Std.

Bengaluru-based aero-defence equipment maker Radel Advanced Technology (RAT) is eyeing huge opportunities in the defence sector this year and is developing a series of indigenous technologies for the Indian Air Force (IAF).

"An electronic Line Replaceable Unit (LRU) for the Dornier (maritime reconnaissance) aircraft is under development and has successfully undergone functional testing at Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL). It is now in the qualification testing phase," the company's managing director, G. Raj Narayan, told IANS.

Also, the company is awaiting integration and flight trial reports from the IAF for an electronic bomb-release controller used on fighter aircraft.

"Once this is completed, the unit will enter serial production," Narayan said.

RAT has increased the life span of the Jaguar fighter aircraft by indigenising the distributor used on its rocket pod. The micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) has used modern electronic systems to replace the original, which is now obsolete.

"This unit has undergone successful certification following flight tests by the IAF. It will now go into serial production," Narayan said.

The company is also working on the repair of a high voltage power supply component of the Indian Navy's helicopters.

"The project involves reverse engineering and design of a new power supply module using current electronics technology. The project is nearing completion and the finalized unit will be delivered to the navy in a couple of weeks," Narayan said.

The company is certified by CEMILAC (Centre for Military Airworthiness Certification) and has executed 20 indigenisation projects for HAL and the IAF.

It has already designed, developed and supplied a number of ground rigs for testing the avionics on board the indigenous advanced light helicopter (ALH) and the Sukhoi Su-30MKI combat jet. Multiple numbers of these have been supplied to HAL and are operating across IAF bases.

"Repeat orders for these are being periodically executed by us to meet the needs of HAL," Narayan

Challenges in Getting Better Buying Power to Indian Army
We need to get used to the idea of incentivizing industry for efficiency and performance. We could also make a beginning by measuring return on investment in DRDO laboratories and simultaneously explore feasibility of outsourcing research and development.

Promote Effective Competition. The DoD uses real competition as the single most powerful tool to drive productivity. In our scenario, ‘level playing field’ which the industry keeps demanding has to become a reality, if we want to promote effective competition. For that to happen, we need to make procedural as well as structural changes in the MoD to make sure that the Ordnance Factories and the Defence Public Sector Undertakings do not have the first rights, but are good enough to compete for orders. Deming said that the worst thing that can happen to a business is absence of competition and the same is applicable in totality to our public sector defence enterprise.

The committee also asked DRDO about its research on a Gujarat-based Sadhu, Prahlad Jani, who has been living on air. He does not eat and drink. A research on him was carried out in 2003 and 2010 and the committee asked if the outcome can be used in warfare.

Short-sighted bumpkin kufars! Does it not dawn on them how much money we could save if our officers and soldiers did not eat or drink but live off air only?

BFSRs with TIs integrated have been available for a long time now and deployed in the thousands. Developed by LRDE/DRDO, made at BEL and latest version is also under production for IA, BSF.

The period of 2010-14 saw a significant rise in the production orders of DRDO developed systems.
Bulk of orders for these have been placed in the last five years indicating increased maturity of
system development and their growing acceptance by the Services. DRDO systems worth more than
1.6 lakh Cr have been inducted or are in the process of induction in the Services. This does not
include the production orders of strategic systems and revenue procurements. Defence Acquisition
Council data for the period 2007-12 show that the indigenous acquisitions have crossed the
55 per cent


DRDO has 347 ongoing projects amounting to approximately
45,026.48 Cr (DRDO’s share 33,331.91 Cr, remaining from the User)
. In addition, 190 projects are in the final stage of completion
and are under technical/administrative closures. Out of 347 active projects, 36 large projects (cost ≥
100 Cr) have a cost of 38,201 Cr (DRDO’s share 26,698.48 Cr), which is
approximately 85 per cent of the total cost

In this direction, ANURAG developed a 384-node Dual CPU Linux cluster in 2007. Called Dhruva-1,
the cluster has peak capacity of 6 TFLOPS. In 2012, ANURAG upgraded the existing facility with
commissioning of 40 TFLOPS capacity Dhruva-2 HPC system. Subsequently, ANURAG added 300
TFLOPS computing facility named Dhruva-3

Improved Kanchan Armour
DMRL has designed and developed improved Kanchan Armour for MBT Arjun Mk-II for enhanced
protection against large calibre kinetic energy ammunition compared to Kanchan Armour of MBT Arjun
Mk-I. The new armour has been developed using advanced armour materials and new designs but
without increase in weight. Armour modules replicating Mk-I and Mk-II designs have been fabricated
and user trials have been carried out on these modules.


Advanced Explosive Reactive Armour
Performance demonstration to Users:
Development of ERA Mk-II has been completed. Performances of ERA Mk-II (Hull and Turret panels) and T-90 ERA against Milan warhead were demonstrated to Users at HEMRL and against 125 mm FSAPDS (AMK-340) ammunition at PXE, Balasore, during
October. Performance of ERA Mk-II was found equivalent to that of T-90 ERA.

120 mm FSAPDS Mk-II Ammunition for MBT Arjun Tank (Evaluation of Propellant and CCC for
120 mm FSAPDS Ammunition for MBT Arjun Tank)
117 FSAPDS MK-II rounds were assembled using resin-based CCC with strengthened cap and
NATO std. primer at OF, Chanda, and Phase-I to V user trials were conducted at PXE and (PFFR).
Debris Free combustion was achieved and toxicity level in terms of CO (26 ppm) and NO
2(0.5 ppm) was within threshold limit. Prepared resin-based CCC specifications and forwarded to all concerned
agencies.

Enhanced Range Rocket (Pinaka Mk-II)-Development of Propellant Grain and Igniter for Rocket
Motor
Propellant composition with 5 per cent RDX has been developed and scaled-up to batch size of 850
kg. Twenty-six motors have been processed and fivestatic firingswere conducted at ambient temperature.
Seventeen motors were given for flight trials at ITR, Balasore

Aerostat Akashdeep had been demonstrated at Aero India Show. Akashdeep performance
evaluation trial to validate the repeatability and flight dynamics of system has been completed at IIT
Kanpur along with Electro Optic (EO) payload. The endurance of five days has been achieved in
this trial as per the trial objective. All the instrumentation packages performed well and acquired the
necessary flight trial data
Following the successful demonstration of Akashdeep, a new aerostat system, Nakshatra is being
built to track a 450 km radius that is approximately four times the present 110 km radius surveillance
track of Akashdeep.
Development of winch and mooring system has been completed. The power
management and health monitoring system sub-assemblies and tether are under realisation.

GTRE

Small Turbo Fan Engine
Under this project, 3-D model of the engine and its components have been created. Detailed CFD
analysis has been carried out to establish the targeted engine performance. The engine is expected to
provide 410 kgf thrust at 0.75 kg/kgf-hr specific fuel consumption (SFC). Manufacture of the components
with indigenous material is under progress. Development of LRUs and accessories has started. First
prototype of the alternator has been realised. The alternator is designed to operate at 53,000 rpm
speed and deliver 4kW power. High pressure (HP) and low pressure (LP) turbine rotor blades, Nozzle
Guide Vanes (NGV), and HP NGV casings were realised with indigenous technology.

First prototype of compressor blades for gas turbine generator for the Indian Navy has been
manufactured. The process is being consolidated.

Six antennae configur tions of R118 Radar Warning Receiver (RWR) system have been certified
and cleared with Eagle Eye Interface Unit for installation and flight trials on SU-30MKI aircraft

ARDE
-Multi Barrel Rocket Launcher System–Pinaka Mk-II
To enhance the range of the existing Pinaka rockets from 39 km to 60 km, development of Pinaka
Mk-II rocket has been taken up. Structural and ground resonance tests and lining of motor tubes have
been completed. Static trials have been conducted for batch proof of cast motors. Three stabilizer
assembly has been qualifi d for integration. Three dynamic trials were conducted for design validation.
Design finalisation based on analysis of the trial results is being carried out

155 mm/52 Calibre Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System
The aim of the project is to design and develop state-of-the-art 155m/52 Cal Advanced Towed
Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) for artillery of Indian Army. Detailed system engineering has been
carried out considering advanced features enumerated in draft PSQR. The sub-system level design,
documentation and review of the gun structure, automation and control system have been completed.
Predictive ballistic solutions have been worked out and design and review of all components of ordnance
and recoil system have been completed. Manufacturing contract for gun barrel has been placed. Other
hardware sub-systems are under realisation. Industrial interaction workshop was held for identification
of major potential industries in the nation for efficient manufacture of the gun systems to meet the
system requirements.

GPS/INS Guidance and Control Kit and Glide Fin Kit for 450 kg HSLD Bomb
Ground mechanical adaptation trials of the kit with Jaguar Darin-II were conducted successfully.
Using avionics and seeker for PG kit for 450 kg High Speed Low Drag (HSLD) aircraft bomb, captive
trials have been successfully completed at ITR. The seeker locked-on and tracked the target during the
captive flight.

New Family of Munitions
Under this project, seven types of munitions have been designed and developed by DRDO, viz.,
Nipun, Vibhav, Vishal, Parth, Prachand, Ulka and Abha to improve the existing munitions and enhance
its performance. User-assisted technical trials (UATT) for NIPUN have been successfully completed.
Trials with 15 sets of prototypes of Vibhav have been successfully completed. Explosive train trials with
actual fuze components of Vibhav have been successfully completed

120 mm FSAPDS Blank Ammunition for MBT Arjun
User trial was conducted for 120 mm FSAPDS blank ammunition at PFFR with successful results.
Strength of design, penetration and consistency for Mk-II prototype was achieved as per GSQR
requirements.Confirmatory and user-associated technical trials have been completed successfully.
User trials (all 5 phases and open-field firing) have been complete
Penetration-Cum Blast (PCB) and Thermobaric (TB) Ammunition for 120 mm Arjun Tank
120 mm TB Ammunition: Static evaluation, strength of design, charge assessment and temperature
coefficient and dynamic functioning trials completed. Electro-mechanical fuze development trials have
been completed. Phase I trials functioning in impact mode was satisfactory. Prototype testing of ID fuze
(ID Mode) has been conducted.
120 mm PCB Ammunition: Static, dynamic, strength of design and penetration trials were completed.
Charge assessment and temperature coefficient trials were completed. Prototype testing of ID Fuze
(Impact Delay Mode) has also been conducted.


ToT for Production of Pinaka Weapon System
Production for two regiments is ongoing at different agencies namely Ammunition at OFs; Loader
and Replenishment Vehicle at M/s BEML, Bengaluru; and Launcher and Battery Command Post at
M/s Tata Power and M/s L&T. Production of launchers and other ground support systems of first two
regiments have been completed. Defect-free rocket production was established at OFs. Two thousand
nine hundred thirty-two Pre-Formed (PF) fragment rockets and 58 Restricted High-explosive (RHE)
rockets have been delivered to Indian Army. Production rate of 1000 rockets per annum has been
established at OFs.
Six rocket lots with pre-fragmented warheads (560 rockets) have been delivered to Indian Army after
dynamic proof trials. ARDE has extended all the help requested by Artillery Directorate for facilitating
the procurement of Pinaka systems to Artillery Regiment nos. 5 to 10.

Under Barrel Grenade Launcher
UBGL has been accepted by the Indian Army for induction into the Services. An indent for
manufacture and supply of 10,604 UBGLs, 1701 for Rashtriya Rifles and 1229 for Mechanised Infantry,
is placed by Indian Army. As of date, 7000 launchers have been supplied.

ToT for Mine Anti-Tank Hollow with Influence Fuze Mk I
Bulk order for 20,000 Mine Anti-Tank Hollow was placed by user on OFB. Dynamic trials, static
penetration trials and self-neutralising (SN) period trials for Users’ confirmation have been completed
successfully. Indian Army to release bulk production clearance for the remaining Qty, i.e., 17000 nos.

Aerosol-based Fire Fighting System for Fifth-Generation Aircraft and LCA

The aerosol fire suppressing agent is a leading technology worldwide for extinguishing compartment
fires. The aerosol generator is approx. ten times more effective than the presently used Halon
alternatives, non-toxic, environmentally safe with zero GWP and ODP. The requirement of fire fighting
system for fighter aircraft was assigned to CFEES under the FGFA programme. An initial prototype
of AFFS was designed and developed for fire suppression applications for engine nacelle of aircraft.
This has been demonstrated for extinguishing fire in 1 m3 and 2 m3 chambers. This has applications in
Defence (fighter aircraft, tanks, ships, submarines, combat vehicles, fire services) sector as well as civil
(industries, chemical laboratories, vehicles, fire services) sector

Safe Storage of Sensitive Explosives
The project involves design and development of storage/process buildings for HD 1.1 and HD 1.3
to address the problem of increase in the quantum of explosive storage. The design will be provided to
Services for storage of ammunitions.The design has been validated by conducting a full-scale trial with
40T NEC propellant storage structure based on Unit Risk Principle at Field Fire Range, Babina.

High Performance Explosive Storage Building (for Prevention of Sympathetic Detonation with
Possible Occurrence of Delayed Detonation)
An innovative concept of multi-compartment High Performance Magazines (HPM) which enables
the separation of explosive storage into compartments in such a manner that initiation of explosive
in one compartment does not result in sympathetic detonation of the explosive in adjacent storage
compartment. Validation trial of high performance explosive storage structure with 5 MT NEC
(HD1.1) was conducted at Field Fire Range, Babina. Instrumentation was provided to measure blast
overpressure, time of arrival and duration of blast load, ground particle velocity, acceleration, and strain
inside structure and Fragment distribution pattern.
Design Validation Trial of Underground Explosive/Ammunition Storage
Over the years, demand for explosive facilities has increased manifold resulting in constraints in
sitting of new explosive buildings due to non-availability of Inhabited Building Distances. The concept of
underground storage can solve this problem. In order to formulate regulations and develop the design
of underground explosives and ammunition storages, a project ‘Design Validation Trial of Underground
Explosive/Ammunition Storage’ has been undertaken. Under this project, fully instrumented blast trial of
1.1MT NEC will be conducted at Field Firing Range, Babina, which will lead to design of underground
storage of 40 MT NEC. Geotechnical investigation of the soil/rock at the underground trial site has been
completed. Rock type was found out to be fair-to-good rock. Design and modelling of underground
facility has also been completed. Excavation has been completed. Expansion chambers have been
constructed. Construction of the trial structure is in advanced stage of completion.
Advanced Non-Intrusive Detector for Fire
A project has been undertaken to develop an advanced non-intrusive detector to identify and alarm
the threatening fire event in its incipient stage and from a standoff distance of about 50 m. The principle
being used is the simultaneous detection of multiple fire gases, viz., CO, CO2, CH4, C2H4, etc. The

intended applications are large fuel storage area, hangers, warehouses, auditoriums, strategic Defence
area/land, control rooms and many other industrial applications. The experimental set-up comprising
tuneable diode laser system, multipath cell, spectrum analyser system, power meter and gas generation
and dilution system for studying the absorption line strength of fire gases near IR range (1.3 to 1.8 µm)
has been developed.

Water Mist System Validation for Fire Protection in Naval Ships
After the successful validation of Water Mist-based Fire Protection System (WMFPS) for onboard
submarine application, a project has been taken up to demonstrate efficacy of water mist system for
engine room for ‘S’ and ‘K’ class of ships (having engine room up to the free volume of 2000 m3). After
validation as per International Maritime Organisation Standard Test Protocol, design guidelines for a
Water Mist System for onboard fire protection in engine rooms of ships will be developed for use by
Indian Navy. The fabrication of simulation chamber with twin-fluid water mist system and instrumentation
is under progress.
Wireless Instant Fire Detection and Suppressions System for Armoured Fighting Vehicles
Fire Detection and Suppression System (FDSS) for Armoured Fighting Vehicles (AFVs) has been
developed, which caters for any eventuality of fire inside the crew and engine/transmission compartment
of battle tank. This system can detect, fight and totally suppress fire within 150 ms, thereby enhancing
crew and vehicle survivability and safety. The system is in production after successful performance
during user trials. Further work is in progress to develop state-of-the-art micro-controller-based FDSS.


HEMRL

Establishment of Explosive Filling and Pyrotechnics for Submunition Warheads Pinaka PF and
Incendiary Warhead
Pinaka PF Module was filled with DENTEX composition (2 nos.) for static evaluation of Pinaka
incendiary warhead. Pinaka RHE warhead (5 nos.) was filled with dummy composition (HES/Al)
Pinaka Submunition Warhead
COM have been assembled on 11 nos. of warheads (4 nos. dual-purpose improvised conventional
munition, 3 nos. soft target munition, 4 nos. anti-tank munition) for dynamic trials. Dynamic trials of
submunition warheads for evaluation of ET fuze were conducted at PXE, Balasore. Evaluation of burn
rate of the propellant in 2 kg BEM (14 nos.) have been carried out.
Monolith Fuel-Air Explosive Bomb of 500 kg Class
All sub-system/system-level qualifications tests have been completed. User demonstration trials
of FAE bomb using single initiator charge for aerosol detonation were conducted. Ground adaption
tests with SU-30 MKI aircraft have been completed and the bomb was found adaptable (electrically
and mechanically) at intended stations (Station nos.1, 2, 3, 4, 7 and 8). Store separation analysis using
CFD code as per Indian Air Force requirement were carried out and report submitted to RCMA (AA) for
according flight clearance
Canopy Severance System for LCA (Supply of 22 sets of CSS for striker and trainer aircraft)
Preparation of three sets of Ground Egress System (GES) for fighter aircraft have been completed
and issued to ARDE for package trials. Lot proof and package trial of GES have been completed at
ARDE, Pune. Preparation of five sets of Canopy Severance System (CSS) for trial of modified junction
box is under progress.
Air Bursting Grenades for Individual Weapons
High Explosives Filling tools for stemming booster have been designed and fabricated. Fifteen nos.
of stemming cups werefill d with RDX Gr-I and used for proving explosive train.Filling tools for main
charge have been designed and fabricated. Ten nos. of grenades bodies werefilled with RDX/Wax
(95/5) composition and statically evaluated for fragmentation effect.
Integrated Development of Advanced Explosive Compositions for Multiple Applications
Process parameters for shock-insensitive formulation NTO/TNT (60/40) using bimodal SphericalNTO have been established. VOD, shock, impact and friction sensitivity of the formulation were
determined. Process parameters for formulation FOX-7/TNT (60/40) using trimodal FOX-7 have been
established. VOD, impact sensitivity and friction sensitivity of the formulation were determined and

characterised for its thermal decomposition behaviour. NTO-based composition (RDX/NTO/HTPB:
60/22/18) was prepared and characterized and compared to RDX/HTPB (82/18)-based composition.
Composition (HMX/HTPB: 78/22) was prepared and characterised.
Advanced Explosive Reactive Armour
Performance demonstration to Users: Development of ERA Mk-II has been completed. Performances
of ERA Mk-II (Hull and Turret panels) and T-90 ERA against Milan warhead were demonstrated to
Users at HEMRL and against 125 mm FSAPDS (AMK-340) ammunition at PXE, Balasore, during
October. Performance of ERA Mk-II was found equivalent to that of T-90 ERA.
120 mm FSAPDS Mk-II Ammunition for MBT Arjun Tank (Evaluation of Propellant and CCC for
120 mm FSAPDS Ammunition for MBT Arjun Tank)
117 FSAPDS MK-II rounds were assembled using resin-based CCC with strengthened cap and
NATO std. primer at OF, Chanda, and Phase-I to V user trials were conducted at PXE and (PFFR).
Debris Free combustion was achieved and toxicity level in terms of CO (26 ppm) and NO2 (0.5 ppm)
was within threshold limit. Prepared resin-based CCC specifications and forwarded to all concerned
agencies.
Enhanced Range Rocket (Pinaka Mk-II)-Development of Propellant Grain and Igniter for Rocket
Motor
Propellant composition with 5 per cent RDX has been developed and scaled-up to batch size of 850
kg. Twenty-six motors have been processed and five static firings were conducted at ambient temperature.
Seventeen motors were given for flight trials at ITR, Balasore
Measurements of Shock Loading on Counter Mine Fail System of Tank T-72
Preliminary trials with CMF system mounted on tank T-72 have been successfully completed.
Trials were conducted by ground blasting 6.5 kg TNT bare charge underneath rotor-centre of the CMF
system. Head-on pressure on the rotor, side-on pressures at 3 points and accelerations at 3 different
points of the tank were measured successfully. Three nos. of 2 kg TNT charges have been prepared
and evaluated including one charge against structure prepared by R&DE(E).
Supply of IES and GES Sets for LCA Fighter and Trainer Aircraft
Dual In-flight Egress Systems (IES) have been installed on PV-5 and NP-1 aircraft. Preparation of fiv
sets of dual IES have been completed and issued to HAL, Bengaluru. CSS has been installed on LSP
4 aircraft. Preparation of five sets of Ground Egress Systems (GES) was completed and issued to HAL,
Bengaluru, for installation on aircraft. Preparation of 600 m of CMDC for braiding is under progress.

Signal Intelligence System
DLRL has developed an advanced signal intelligence system ‘DivyaDrishti’ for the Defence Services,
with the aim of interception, monitoring, direction finding, analysis, and recording of airborne-and-ground
based communication signals. The system installation at 25 static stations and at four mobile stationshas been completed.All the stations are integrated over a secure satellite communication network. The
complete integrated system has been made operational and is under user exploitation.

DRDO has undertaken indigenous development of a family of seven EW systems customised for
different platforms as per Naval Staff Qualitative Requirements (NSQR). Navy has given commitment for
further production and induction of these systems. PDR for all the seven systems has been completed.

COM entity software is in progress. Core system technology modules incorporating homodyne Rx,
Quad Superhet Rx, Digital Rx in radar segment have been integrated for demonstration of performance
in microwave bands. Fast scan Rx, monitor receiver in communication bands have been configured for
detection of conventional frequency hopping signals

Himraj
The role of the Himraj is to intercept, monitor, analyse, and locate adversary’s radar transmission
in 70 MHz to 40 GHz band. DRDO is responsible for the system design, development of critical subsystems, and realisation of a truncated reference version of the engineered system for Ground Base
Mobile ELINT System (GBMES), which are being pursued towards production at BEL. The entire
system configuration has been finalised and realisation of engineered system is in progres

Primary Radar for Airborne Early Warning and Control System
Primary radar for airborne early warning and control system has been integrated with mission
system computer and tested on roof-top test set-up. The radar performance has been evaluated using
this roof-top set-up with multiple opportune and dedicated sorties, and found to meet the specifiations
such as range azimuth coverage, accuracies, resolution, etc.The hardware and software of the system
have been qualifid and the system has been certifid to fl on aircraft. The qualifid radar system has
been installed and integrated on aircraft. Radar testing on the aircraft has commenced and opportune
targets were tracked.

Synthetic Aperture Radar for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is integrated and tested at radar test platform deployed with SOFT
qualifid hardware.Opportune targets were detected and tracked up to 40 km range in GMTITWS
mode. SAR concept has been successfully proven using Rail SAR methodology using corner reflctors
as targets. Design and fabrication of lightweight version of antenna, digital unitand antenna stabilisation
unit have been completed for UAV.

Medium Power Radar Arudhra
Prototype of medium power radar, Arudhra, has been developed and demonstrated to the User,
i.e., IAF at Kasauli. Antenna pressurisation system, pedestal assembly and power system of the main
radar have qualifid EMI/EMC tests.
MPR Arudhra

Active Electronically Scanned Array Radar Uttam
DRDO has taken up the development of flght control radar for fihter aircraft with 100 km range
and multimode operation. Realisation and calibration of prototype Active Aperture Array Antenna Unit
(AAAU) has been completed with indigenous TR modules. Airworthy radar processor and exciterreceiver have been realised and tested on a high rise platform in Mechanical Scanned Array (MSA)
confiuration for validation of various algorithms and waveforms of the fie control radar. Software
development for air-air sub-modes has been carried out

Single Crystal Blades and Vanes for Aero-engine Applications
DMRL has demonstrated single crystal casting process for high pressure turbine blades (HPTB)
and high pressure turbine vanes (HPTV) having intricate cooling channels to be used in advanced
aero-engines. This is an advanced technology in comparison to what HAL, Koraput, currently has for
hollow single crystal HPT rotor blades (used in SUKHOI fighter aero-engines)

Improved Kanchan Armour
DMRL has designed and developed improved Kanchan Armour for MBT Arjun Mk-II for enhanced
protection against large calibre kinetic energy ammunition compared to Kanchan Armour of MBT Arjun
Mk-I. The new armour has been developed using advanced armour materials and new designs but
without increase in weight. Armour modules replicating Mk-I and Mk-II designs have been fabricated
and user trials have been carried out on these modules.

Titanium Sponge
The 500 ton per year commercial Titanium Sponge Plant jointly set up by DRDO, VSSC, and
M/s Kerala Minerals & Metals Limited (KMML), Chavara, Kollam, Kerala has been regularly producing
titanium sponge in 3.5 MT batches. The first lot of 5 MT of finished titanium sponge of aerospace purity
in the size range of 12-25 mm was supplied to Midhani, Hyderabad. Subsequently, another 10 MT of
aerospace grade titanium sponge has been supplied to VSSC.
Type certification of KMML titanium sponge to qualify its use in defence and aerospace applications
through RCMA (Materials), Hyderabad, has been initiated. This type certification, if completed, will lead
to increased consumption of titanium sponge in the country.
Development of Sm2Co17-type Permanent Magnets for High Power Brushless dc Motors
Rare-earth permanent magnets, especially Sm2Co17 type permanent magnets, are most preferred
by designers for electro-technical devices owing to their high energy product as well as retention of their
magnetic properties to a higher temperature which permits significant device miniaturisation. DMRL
has developed Sm2Co17 permanent magnets for applications in brushless dc (BLDC) motors. More
than 150 block magnets of different sizes were provided to NSTL from which sectors suitable for 30 W and 60 W BLDC motors for decoys and 60 kW BLDC motor for lightweight torpedo were made.
The magnets have performed exceedingly well in the trials and efforts are currently underway to make
larger size magnet blocks for 250 kW BLDC motors.

Life Extension of AI20D Aero-Engine
Indian Air Force has more than 100 AN-32 transport aircraft in its inventory powered by AI20D
Series-V engines of Russian origin with nearly 300 AI20D aero-engines which have either completed
or on the verge of completing Total Technical Life (TTL) of 6000 h. IAF in collaboration with DRDO,
RCMA (Engines), Koraput, and 3BRD (IAF), Chandigarh, has undertaken this challenging task of
successful implementation as a first major step towards establishing a systematic methodology for lifing
review of aero-engines. The revision of TTL would generate additional 300,000 h of flying time, which

Notable Achievements
Ku-Band MPM-based Transmitter for Airborne Radar
Under this project, design and development of a 330W mini-helix TWT and a transmitter using this
TWT to deliver 300W peak output powers up to 30 per cent duty cycle was taken up. Design of TWT
and transmitter has been completed.First prototype of the 330W TWT has been developed and has met
the RF performance over the desired band of operation at duty cycle up to 20 per cent. This TWT has
been integrated with microwave power module (MPM) based transmitter and tested up to 10 per cent
duty cycle of operation and met most of the critical specifications
300 W mini-TWT
G-Band CCTWT for Weapon Locating Radar
First prototype TWT has been developed jointly with BEL, Bengaluru. This tube has given 35 kW at
0.1 per cent duty. Advance cooling technique has been designed to achieve operation of TWT at 5 per
cent duty cycle. This is being integrated in the second prototype being developed at BEL, Bengaluru.
The various sub-systems of the second prototype have been made and are being integrated.

G-band CCTWT first prototype tub
300 W C-X-Ku-Band Helix TWT
This TWT has to deliver 300W of output power in CW mode over 6-18 GHz frequency band. Design
of all sub-systems has been completed. 3-D EM simulation and thermal analysis of various subsystems, i.e., SWS, couplers, electron gun, and collector of TWT have been completed. Fabrication of
piece parts has been completed and development of sub-assemblies is under progress.
MPM for EW-POD
The development of MPM is proposed to be carried out jointly with BEL. This is a high gain (50
dB), wideband (C-Ku Band), light weight (< 3 kg), high efficiency (~25 per cent), CW, 100 W and
phase matched microwave power module (MPM). This is being developed for heli-borne systems.
First indigenous micro-TWT for this microwave power module(MPM) is under testing. The PCBs for
Electronic Power Conditioners (EPC) has been designed and is being made.
Transmitter for Satellite Data Link for Rustom–II
Under this project Ku-band MPM-based transmitter for satellite data link has been developed. A
lab prototype has been made and tested. Based on this, a modified MPM has been designed. Design
of chassis and its thermal management has been completed. Linearised TWT has been received and
tested for its specifications. Development of chassis and Integration of MPM is under progress
Multi-beam Klystron(MBK)
150 W Ku-band MBK: One prototype has been assembled with imported cathode. RF testing of this
tube have been carried out and it has delivered a maximum RF power of ~175 W at 17.15 GHz with
3 dB bandwidth of 45 MHz. High duty testing is also carried out where stable 150W output power with
cooling and 60 s without cooling aremeasured.
400 W Ku-Band MBK: Two prototype tubes have been assembled jointly with M/s ALMAZ at Saratov,
Russia. Both the tubes have delivered more than 400 W output power over 60 MHz bandwidth. Both
tubes meet the electrical and environmental specifications up to 10 per cent duty
Production Orders Placed/Systems Accepted
S-band CC TWT for Rohini and Revathi Radar under LSP
This is a coupled cavity type TWT being used in three-dimensional central acquisition radar
transmitters (3-D CAR transmitter variant of Rohini, Revathi, and TCR). One prototype tube has been
developed and tested under LSP at M/s BEL, Bengaluru. Packaging of first tube and development of
second prototype tube is at hand.
Advance Jammer Technologies, Sarwagna
A highly advanced compact 100 W continuous wave (CW)/pulsed broadband microwave power
module (MPM) with high pulse repetition frequency (PRF) and very low throughput delay has been

developed for Naval EW system. A LSP of 20 MPMs has been completed with M/s BEL, Bengaluru.
The MPMs have been qualified for electrical and ESS tests and later delivered to DLRL, Hyderabad. All
the MPMs have been tested again at DLRL and then successfully integrated with the system.

MPM for Flight Level Radar/Troop Level Radar
A pulsed MPM for the Flight-level Radar (FLR) is under production at BEL, Bengaluru. A variant
of this MPM for Troop-level Radar (TLR) has been made with stringent EMI/EMC specifications
and has met all the User specifications. The production of 12 numbers of FLR-MPM and
2 numbers of TLR-MPM has been completed and delivered to the user.

Sagar G: There is no need for complete reverse engineering either. All the technical details are already published. So understand the how from reverse engineering and the why from technical papers. Voila, India will be on par. Of course, money, time, and most importantly motivated individuals are required. Not that there are no motivated people but the numbers have to be increased.

Advanced Non-Intrusive Detector for Fire
A project has been undertaken to develop an advanced non-intrusive detector to identify and alarm
the threatening fire event in its incipient stage and from a standoff distance of about 50 m. The principle
being used is the simultaneous detection of multiple fire gases, viz., CO, CO2, CH4, C2H4, etc. The

intended applications are large fuel storage area, hangers, warehouses, auditoriums, strategic Defence
area/land, control rooms and many other industrial applications. The experimental set-up comprising
tuneable diode laser system, multipath cell, spectrum analyser system, power meter and gas generation
and dilution system for studying the absorption line strength of fire gases near IR range (1.3 to 1.8 µm)
has been developed.

so do they plan to extend this to IR detection ranges in case of flame? like the recent terror boat on fire incident?
Then there is the hydrocarbon detector on the P-8 (US version) in lieu of the MAD, even traces of these exhaust gases can be detected?

Wireless Instant Fire Detection and Suppressions System for Armoured Fighting Vehicles
Fire Detection and Suppression System (FDSS) for Armoured Fighting Vehicles (AFVs) has been
developed, which caters for any eventuality of fire inside the crew and engine/transmission compartment
of battle tank. This system can detect, fight and totally suppress fire within 150 ms, thereby enhancing
crew and vehicle survivability and safety. The system is in production after successful performance
during user trials. Further work is in progress to develop state-of-the-art micro-controller-based FDSS.


Is this applicable in the context of enclosed spaces in subs?
