Coast Guard Intercepts Suspect Boat Carrying Explosives in Arabian Sea
An intelligence based midnight operation was conducted on the intervening night of Dec 31 and yesterdayby the Indian Coast Guard ships and aircraft to intercept a suspect fishing boat in Arabian Sea near Indo-Pak maritime boundary, approximately 365 km from Porbander.
As per the intelligence inputs received on 31st December, a fishing boat from KetiBunder near Karachi was planning some illicit transaction in Arabian Sea. Based on the input, Coast Guard Dornier aircraft undertook sea - air coordinated search and located the suspect fishing boat. Thereafter, the Coast Guard ship on patrol in area was diverted and intercepted the unlit boat at about midnight of 31st December in position 365 km West-South West of Porbandar.
The Coast Guard ship warned the fishing boat to stop for further investigation of the crew and cargo; however, the boat increased speed and tried to escape away from the Indian side of maritime boundary. The hot pursuit continued for nearly one hour and the Coast Guard ship managed to stop the fishing boat after firing warning shots. Four persons were seen on the boat who disregarded all warnings by the Coast Guard ship to stop and cooperate with investigation. Soon thereafter, the crew hid themselves in below deck compartment and set the boat on fire, which resulted in explosion and major fire on the boat.
Due to darkness, bad weather and strong winds, the boat and persons on board could not be saved or recovered. The boat burnt and sank in the same position, in early hours of 1st January. Coast Guard ships and aircraft are continuing operations in area to search for any possible survivor. Coast Guard and other security agencies are maintaining high vigil in maritime and coastal areas since last couple of months due to several inputs on threat from the sea.

Re: Breaking news: Coast guard intercepted terrorist boat
scientists have already discounted this as a nighttime encounter with a whale shark named yahudi-jaaz who did not have tail lights on. International efforts are being made to retreive the ashes so the mariners can qualify for their 72 raisins. All the spin will not bring back the boat that was the livelihood of 19 wives, 32 children, 11 grand children and 69 extended relatives. Restaurants in food-bazaar gawdar are already predicting seafood price rides on a ghazni-ivi (also known as shaheen ixl) due to short supplies as other boats are now fishing only in thr chinese economic zone around gwadar where fish rarely vernture. situation is made more bleak as fisherman must pay the docaits thesedays (due to fake currency rackets) in fish if they wsnt to take and sell their catch to wholesalers in the lahore or rawalpindi areas.

Deja vu.
Vivek Ahuja in his current scenario writes of a terrorist boat heading in to India for a Nuke attack was spotted by a Dornier and blew itself. Phew! no nukes in the real one.
Good call Ahuja Saar. You have the sight.

Meanwhile from Al-Bakistan.. Poor fishermen blow up their own boats to avoid the Indian Navy ..
http://nation.com.pk/national/02-Jan-20 ... navy-chase
NEW DELHI- The crew of a Pakistani fishing boat blew up and sank their vessel after trying to avoid capture at the hands of the Indian navy in a high-speed chase at sea, officials said today.
According to sources, all four people are believed to have been killed in the dramatic episode in the Arabian Sea on New Year’s Eve.
Indian Coast Guard ships and aircraft tried to intercept the boat near the maritime border with Pakistan, around 365 kilometers from the coastal state of Gujarat.
“However, the boat increased speed and tried to escape away from the Indian side of maritime boundary. The hot pursuit continued for nearly one hour,” a defence ministry statement added.
Although the boat did eventually stop after warning shots were fired, the crew then hid themselves below deck before setting the boat on fire which triggered a large explosion.

Re: Breaking news: Coast guard intercepted terrorist boat
Anyone revealed the name of the ICG ship involved in the incident ? It would be interesting to ascertain what weapon was used for the warning shots.
This shows superb air-sea coordination and good intel.
It also shows the danger - put India aside for a second - to countries from Jihadis with access to explosives and boats.
In the absence of an effective coastal patrol system, I fear that Trinidad is very vulnerable. It is a big wake up call for us given our oil installations etc.

Re: Breaking news: Coast guard intercepted terrorist boat
Right - 50m vessel which in our force structure is designated a Coastal Patrol Vessel. Of which we have at this moment 0.
I cannot tell you how much this incident has disturbed me in respect of its implications for Trinidadian security - we are a Jihadi target. Lots of radical Islamist elements present (many armed and trained) plus their hatred for a Hindu woman PM who co-sponsored the foreign fighters resolution in the UN. Lots of fat targets and little capability to protect them.

True. Anyone know why no UAVs have been passed to ICG for just this purpose ?Rahul M wrote:a change in the people at helm and the much lampooned NTRO starts working as advertised !

Re: Breaking news: Coast guard intercepted terrorist boat
One channel Live India was reporting 2 more suspicious boats near Porbandar. Coast Guards looking for these. But only one channel is reporting this so may be a false alarm.
Re: Breaking news: Coast guard intercepted terrorist boat
The only weapon capable of warning shots on the ICGS RajRatan is the 30 mm CRN 91 Naval Gun. I doubt if they would use assault rifles (or other handguns carried by the personnel) to fire the warning shotsSanjay wrote:Anyone revealed the name of the ICG ship involved in the incident ? Re: Breaking news: Coast guard intercepted terrorist boat
But remember 12.7mm machine guns are also fitted and I have seen them used for warning shots before.
It would be really interesting to see an after action report (redacted of course) of the incident.

very much possible, after the mumbai attack, they wont send a lone boat, it could very well be a bait.ravi_g wrote:One channel Live India was reporting 2 more suspicious boats near Porbandar. Coast Guards looking for these. But only one channel is reporting this so may be a false alarm.

And you have this farticle ...
http://indianexpress.com/article/india/ ... smugglers/
Quoting in full ...
http://indianexpress.com/article/india/ ... smugglers/
Quoting in full ...
Less than 48 hours after the Coast Guard destroyed a boat it claimed was ferrying explosives and terrorists from Pakistan into Indian waters, new evidence has begun to emerge that the victims of the operation might have been small-time liquor and diesel smugglers, ferrying bootleg cargo from the port of Gwadar to other fishing boats which were to have carried it into Karachi’s Keti Bandar harbour.
There is also a suggestion of use of disproportionate force since the fishing boat did not have an engine capable of outrunning Indian interceptors.
In a press release, the Ministry of Defence said that “as per the intelligence inputs received on 31st December, a fishing boat from Keti Bunder near Karachi was planning some illicit transaction in Arabian Sea”.
Highly-placed government sources, however, said the intelligence had no link to terrorism, and made no reference to any threat to India. Instead, the sources said, the National Technical Research Organisation had intercepted mobile phone traffic involving small-time smugglers operating out of the fishing port of Keti Bandar, near Karachi.
The report, the sources said, was issued directly to the Coast Guard and Navy by a mid-level NTRO official in violation of systems which mandate that any possible threat must be shared with all relevant services, including the Intelligence Bureau, the Research and Analysis Wing, and the Border Security Force.
Naval headquarters, the sources said, chose not to deploy ships in response to the intelligence, noting that it did not involve any threat to national security. However, the Coast Guard scrambled at least one interceptor from Porbandar, which was seen leaving dock by local fishermen late on the night of New Year’s Eve.
A senior Gujarat Police official said that the Coast Guard did not share the information with the state police which also has interceptor boats and coastal police stations meant to interdict coastal trafficking. Maharashtra Police officials also said they were given no information on a maritime operation underway on December 31, and expressed surprise since the state has several landing points and jetties that could be used by a boat carrying explosives to India’s western seaboard.
“You don’t need to be a genius to figure out we should have been told,” the official said, “because if the fishing boat was actually carrying explosives and managed to evade patrols on the seas, we should have been in position waiting for it.”
There is little clarity, so far, on the circumstances under which lethal force was used. In its press release, the Ministry said that a “hot pursuit continued for nearly one hour and the Coast Guard ship managed to stop the fishing boat after firing warning shots”. “Four persons were seen on the boat who disregarded all warnings by the Coast Guard ship to stop and cooperate with investigation. Soon thereafter, the crew hid themselves in below-deck compartment and set the boat on fire, which resulted in explosion and major fire on the boat,” the release stated. But three naval officers told The Indian Express it was inconceivable that Pakistani fishing boats — typically four-crew vessels, with an average length of less than 25 metres and equipped with 80-220 horsepower diesel engines, or smaller mechanised sailboats with 30 horsepower engines — could outrun the Coast Guard’s state-of-the-art ships. Photographs released to media showed only fire damage to the ship’s hull, which would have blown apart had incendiary munitions, such as grenades or ammunition, been on board. Plastic explosive does not ordinarily explode in fires, and only chemical analysis can detect if it was on board. Ministry sources said the Coast Guard has not retrieved debris from the area for forensic analysis. The Ministry’s press release also said that “due to darkness, bad weather and strong winds, the boat and persons on board could not be saved or recovered”. However, open-source meteorological data for the Porbandar coast for the year-end shows conditions were almost ideal right through the second fortnight of December 15, 2014 to January 1, with cloudless skies and, on December 31-January 1. There were no bad-weather warnings for Indian fishermen in the region through this period. Local fishermen said they had not seen the fire on December 31— raising the prospect that the incident may have occurred in international waters, some distance from the thousands of Indian and Pakistani fishing boats in the area. “I’ve been talking to our people in the area”, said Narsibhai Jungi Jadeja, the head of the Porbandar fishing boat owners’ association, “and everyone insists they didn’t see a thing. That surprises me, because a fire at night would be visible many nautical miles away”. “I just hope the government clears up the mystery over this, because if any Pakistani fishermen have been killed, the Pakistan navy will take vengeance on us,” he said. Saeed Baloch, the head of the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum, said he was investigating the identity of the destroyed boat, but had no immediate details. “Hundreds of people go out to sea every day, and it is impossible for us to keep track of all of them. I just hope some poor people trying to make a living have not been killed,” he said.
Re: Breaking news: Coast guard intercepted terrorist boat
Yeah, right. Poor people just making a living will set their boat on fire when under threat of arrest. Some dhoti shivering claimed by the Porbander fisherfolk, against the mighty Pak Navy.
If the intel was indeed about smuggling (only), as this report claims, then it was the ICG's duty to intercept. Nothing wrong with that. Maybe some SOPs weren't followed reg. informing the coastal police, that might need some rework. But it is not like the ICG overreacted and exceeded its mandate, as this article paints.
Given the area this happened in, and past incidents, there is nothing wrong in ICG deploying preponderance of force, for 'just' smugglers. They rightly did not take any chances, and fired warning shots as is the norm. Otherwise, with boats that evade authority in the high seas, zero tolerance is and should be the buzzword, and that should be communicated to those engaging in nefarious acts. This article has got it the other way around, as is the usual for the MSM.

SOP where followed , they didnt stop , so warning shots were fired

This news is straight out of Vivek's military scenerio, minus the nukes. Really serious.

Re: Breaking news: Coast guard intercepted terrorist boat
This time the instructions were probably not to leave any evidence, the way missing airliner's are being fished out we should make efforts to collect forensic from this sunk boat.
Re: Breaking news: Coast guard intercepted terrorist boat
Journos like Shooklaw are having a field day doubting official version of events. Pity to see Shooklaw use every opportunity to portray himself as the smartest one, even at the cost of national security.
Re: Breaking news: Coast guard intercepted terrorist boat
As per rrrNDTV,Pakistani Boat Blows Up Off Gujarat Coast: Unanswered Questions
Was the Pakistani boat which sank off the coast of Porbandar in Gujarat in the early hours of January 1 carrying "explosives" or was it just part of a flourishing smuggling racket between India and Pakistan and carrying much harmless cargo like diesel?
Also, if the Pakistani vessel was laden with weapons and terrorists were on board, then the fact that the men did not put up an opposition but instead chose to evade the Coast Guard ship seems surprising.
Re: Breaking news: Coast guard intercepted terrorist boat
In any case, CG needs to increase in strength and firepower. A protective grille option could also be looked at for crazy people ramming in anything. Plus we must see to it that media does not have live coverage else the CG will have their tactics wide open on TV only to be endlessly scrutinized and books written about how Pakistani boat with explosives was manned by people with Hindoo saffron threads on right hand. We can not make a big show out of every attack from Pakistan.
Re: Breaking news: Coast guard intercepted terrorist boat
Twitter world abuzz with the intelligence coup by India. Kudos to all members of intelligence, coast guard and numerous others about whom we will never know.
Re: Breaking news: Coast guard intercepted terrorist boat
They are useful "tools" onlee. Any discerning viewer or BRFite would know the official version is going to be always different from the "facts". These people on the TV cannot jeopardize, that easily, the national security. MSM sometimes behaves as if it has been elected to run the government. All these "journalists" will be eventually recognized by the people for what they are.Nikhil T wrote:Journos like Shooklaw are having a field day doubting official version of events. BTW, the "harmless" cargo could be "currency notes" and not diesel.
Re: Breaking news: Coast guard intercepted terrorist boat
Err... ICGS Rajratan is a "IPV", analogous to the Water Jet Fast Attack Crafts of the Indian Navy. These vessels have acquitted themselves very well in Counter-Piracy ops and have notched up multiple "kills".
PS: i just noticed that ICGS AOPVs such as below have two CR/n-91 turrets

According to reports, defence ministry is now inspecting a call intercepted between two people who are believed to be a terrorist on the boat and a handler. "You have to act according to the situation on the other side," said one person in the call, according to Times Now.

Another voice from the call reportedly said, "Five lakh each has been paid to the families of the people on boat." The last message from the call intercept said, "We have received the weapons."
Times Now also said that the point of origin of the calls was Pakistan. TV reports also said that the wireless set found on the boat was similar to the ones used by the Pakistan army

Aditya G - IPV is ICGS designation. TTCG designates them CPV (semantics really). Only the Sankalp and the Samrat have 2 30mm turrets.
I always think that there are some scenarios where the old Oerlikons could be useful - especially in the constabulary role.

Could it be:
(a) A distraction from a bigger operation?
(b) A pre-planned coordinated attack on multiple fronts?
(c) Trying to see how far the current GoI can be pushed?
(d) All of the above?

Shame that Vishnu Som who pretends to have Indian interests at heart raise unsubstantiated allegations about the paki terrorist boat. And he was the first one to take offence when some here on BR raised issue of many of these media personnel being on payrolls of foreign governments!
