These Jaguars are of the IM variety - maritime strike. They have a pointy nose, unlike the IS (strike) variant. There is only one squadron in the IAF with the IM variant i.e. No 6 Dragons Squadron based out of Jamnagar Air Force Station, Gujarat. No 6 Squadron also operates the IS and IB (trainer) variants as well.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamnagar_Airport

But home base means nothing. These aircraft can operate from any air force station in India. They could have come from anywhere, but Jamnagar AFS would be the safest guess.

And this is Thanjavur Air Force Station in Tamil Nadu. The Rambha has the legs for it.

Isn't No. 6 squadron one of the oldest Jaguar squadrons...? I read somewhere that the IM type were inducted in mid-80s...
When were they upgraded to DARIN-III standard...???

Define time frame of sustained operations :)

See this tweet from 2018. All three Mirage 2000 squadrons are based at Gwalior which comes under the Central Air Command. But in these pictures, they are operating from Kalaikunda which comes under the Eastern Air Command. For a short time period (1 - 2 weeks), all spares, tools and personnel required for the operation or exercise, are transported to the base from where the aircraft will operate from. Once the exercise or operation is over, the aircraft return to their home base. Same happens during international air exercises as well.

An actual combat operation was when Mirage 2000s operated from Srinagar AFS during Kargil in 1999. The IAF - like all professional air forces - are masters at this game. They know what assets to put in a particular conflict zone and how to sustain those assets. At that time, Air Marshal Nambiar (then Wing Commander) became famous for leading the attack on Tiger Hill in a Mirage 2000.

As a side note, General CQ Brown is now the head of the USAF and Air Marshal Nambiar has retired.

https://twitter.com/livefist/status/107 ... 27936?s=20 ---> Here's @PACAF Commander General Charles Q. Brown Jr. strapping in for a Mirage 2000 sortie with @IAF_MCC Eastern Air Command Chief, Air Marshal Raghunath Nambiar at #CopeIndia2018, Kalaikunda last week.

Shyam, yes Jaguars are stationed at Car Nicobar. But how much of No 6 Squadron is based there or if it is only a flight of the squadron that is there, I am not sure. I am also not sure if they are stationed 24-7 at Car Nicobar. Good catch by the way.

Posting this entire article in full. See below.

Explained: What The Deployment Of Jaguar Fighters In Andaman And Nicobar Islands Means
https://swarajyamag.com/news-brief/expl ... ands-means
21 July 2020

In the middle of its most serious standoff with China in decades, India has deployed Jaguar fighters in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the eastern Indian Ocean. The Indian Air Force (IAF), it is believed, has flown at least 10 Jaguar fighters to the Car Nicobar Air Base in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This deployment of the fighters, which took place earlier this month, came in conjunction with at least three naval exercises in areas around Andaman and Nicobar Islands over the last few weeks, including two Passex or passage drills with the navies of Japan and the US. In all probability, the fighters deployed at Car Nicobar are the maritime strike variant of Jaguar, called Jaguar IM. While there is no confirmation, the fighters could be from the Number 6 Squadron 'Dragons’ based at the Jamnagar Air Force Base in Gujarat.

The first Jaguars (not the maritime variant) of the IAF had landed at the Jamnagar airbase from the United Kingdom this month nearly 40 years ago. While India acquired Jaguars in large numbers, the maritime variant forms a small part of IAF's fleet of Jaguar fighters. Over the years, the IAF has upgraded its Jaguars to squeeze in new capabilities. The most recent upgrade involved the installation of an active electronically-scanned array (AESA) radar manufactured by Israel’s Elta Systems as part of the Display Attack Ranging Inertial Navigation III (DARIN III) upgrade programme of the IAF. Jaguar was the first fighter in the IAF's fleet to get an AESA radar. AESA radar gives the Jaguars a new lease of life with the capability to track multiple targets at greater distances, much more accurately than before, and resist jamming.

In other words, Jaguars of the IAF can now track multiple enemy targets in air and on the ground during an operation, and guide missiles towards them while resisting enemy’s attempt at jamming. Another upgrade, which came in the form of the integration of the Harpoon missile, has added more lethality to the platform, which some said was fast becoming obsolete. Equipped with these capabilities, and deployed in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Jaguars of the IAF can prove to be a headache for China —accentuate its ‘Malacca Dilemma' — if the conflict unfolding in the Himalayas escalates and expands to the maritime domain. Along with assets of the Indian Navy, the Jaguars will play a vital role in the interdiction of Chinese shipping if India decided to do that in the event of war.

The Malacca Strait, a narrow stretch of water between the Malaya Peninsula in the north and the Indonesian island of Sumatra in the south, is crucial for China. It may not be the only shipping channel connecting the Indian Ocean with the South China Sea, but it is the most viable and widely used one. A large part of global seaborne trade (40 per cent by some accounts), including much of China's imports and exports, passes through the Malacca Strait. Beijing's dependence on the Malacca Strait can be gauged from the fact that over 80 per cent of its crude oil requirement, a large part of which comes from the Middle East, passes through this narrow channel on its way to ports in China. Much of the ore and minerals it imports from Africa, which is critical for its industry, passes through the Malacca Strait.

In a long drawn out war with the US or India, a blocked Malacca Strait, if it lasts long enough, can starve China of resources critical for its industry. Additionally, if China, in the event of war with India, decided to deploy its naval assets in the Indian Ocean region, maintaining supply lines through the Malacca Strait will prove difficult with the presence of Indian Navy warships and fighters of the IAF deployed in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. India can interdict these supply lines, forcing Chinese assets to depend on its limited bases in the Indian Ocean. Equipped with the 124-km-range Harpoon anti-ship missiles, the Jaguars flying from Car Nicobar can target enemy ships exiting the Malacca Strait and moving towards Andaman and Nicobar Islands from standoff ranges.

This scenario, experts say, is unlikely unless the situation escalates drastically and an all out war breaks out. And in the current situation, the deployment of Jaguars in Andaman and Nicobar Islands is mostly aimed at deterring Chinese misadventures in the Indian Ocean region. The People’s Liberation Army Navy, over the last decade, has significantly increased its presence in the Indian Ocean. Chinese submarines make regular forays into the Indian Ocean, as do its “research vessels” studying submarine routes and mapping the ocean floor. In September last year, the Indian Navy forced out a Chinese research vessel after it entered India’s exclusive economic zone in the Andaman Sea.

More on the India-Japan Air Exercise.

Japan-India drills to feature Sukhoi Su-30 fighters like those flown by China, Russia over disputed waters - SCMP
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is to dispatch six Sukhoi Su-30 fighter aircraft to Japan
for joint exercises in the coming months
as the two nations seek to strengthen their security and diplomatic ties under the four-nation Quad pact.

Analysts suggest it is no coincidence that Tokyo was keen for the Russian-built fighter jets to take part in the drills as Japanese fighters have come up against Su-30s flown by China over the East China Sea and by Russia close to disputed islands, and Japanese pilots will hope to get a better understanding of these aircraft during the drills in case they ever meet in combat.

The Japan Air Self-Defence Force (JASDF) first conducted exercises with IAF units in India in December 2018, although those drills and similar manoeuvres the following year solely involved transport and logistics. The two governments had planned drills with fighter jets in India in June 2020, but that was postponed twice because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The plan now is for the Indian aircraft and crews to travel to Japan before the end of March and to pit Indian Su-30s against American-built JASDF F-15 Eagle fighters in exercises from a base in Ishikawa Prefecture, on the north coast of Japan.

The Chinese Air Force is understood to have as many as 97 Su-30s still in service, according to a Japanese Ministry of Defence report published in March. A Chinese Su-30 was tracked close to Okinawa Prefecture in 2016, with another spotted the following year over the Sea of Japan. The Chinese Navy also operates the Shenyang J-15 fighter from its carriers, an aircraft based heavily on the Su-30 but with modifications.

“The Su-30 – which Nato designates as the Flanker – was an absolute world-beater when it first came out 30 years ago and is still a very capable aircraft,” said Garren Mulloy, a professor of international relations at Daito Bunka University and an authority on defence issues.

“It’s fast, it has a long range and it can carry a wide variety of payloads for a range of missions, it has a faster rate of climb and is more manoeuvrable than the F-35,” he said.

“I would say that the two areas where the F-35 comes out on top are its stealth characteristics and its ability to network with other ground and air networks, which enable it to ‘see’ much further.”

Determining how best to tackle the Su-30 in combat will be at the top of the JASDF pilots’ agenda during the drills, Mulloy said, although it is unlikely they will learn all its secrets.

“All air forces like to do what they call dissimilar air combat exercises, meaning that they train against aircraft used by other countries so they can gain insight into how good they are or any weaknesses.”

But when the IAF carried out similar manoeuvres with the British Royal Air Force, Russia insisted that not all of the Su-30’s avionics capabilities be used so that some of its electronics and advanced radar could be kept secret. India, which relies heavily on Russia for its weapons systems, acceded to that request and Mulloy expects Moscow to have made a similar demand this time.

“Nevertheless, this exercise looks like a very good example of the two governments using exercises to cement the security relationship and deepen diplomatic ties at the same time as improving training capabilities,” he said.

There has been a notable uptick in military exchanges between Tokyo and New Delhi in recent months, both bilaterally and under the Quad alliance, which groups Japan and India with Australia and the United States.

Units from the ground and naval forces of Japan and India have carried out a number of joint exercises, with the air forces now looking to strengthen their cooperation.

China is a shared concern. Tokyo is in dispute with Beijing over the sovereignty of Japanese-held islands in the East China Sea called the Diaoyus
in China and Senkakus in Japan. And New Delhi and Beijing disagree on their border in the Himalayas , with a deadly clash taking place last year.

“These stepped-up exercises are important as they allow the two militaries to improve their knowledge and capabilities, but it is also an opportunity for the governments to deepen their relationship and present a united front against a shared security threat,” said Yoichi Shimada, a professor of international relations at Fukui Prefectural University.

“I have spoken with counterparts in India and, frankly, they have been frustrated with Japan’s attitude on closer security and diplomatic relations until relatively recently, so it is good to see that is changing and that both countries – which are significant powers – can work more closely together,” he said.

“In the circumstances we see in the Indo-Pacific region at the moment, with all the challenges to stability and peace, exercises such as this are absolutely necessary and I think this could be a breakthrough event in the bilateral relationship,” he said.

India sets scorching pace for military drills across the globe - ToI
India is undertaking an unprecedented number of bilateral and multilateral military exercises with countries across the entire globe this year, with top officers using buzzwords like `defence diplomacy’, `strategic signaling’ and interoperability’ with effortless ease like never before.

India may have put a halt to its bilateral and largely symbolic `Hand-in-Hand’ exercise with China since the military confrontation erupted in eastern Ladakh in May last year, but it’s all systems go as far as other countries are concerned.

“Exercises enhance military and strategic cooperation, confidence-building and interoperability with different countries, apart from honing combat skills, imbibing best practices and operational tactics,” said a senior Army officer.

“Defence diplomacy is an instrument to further India’s diplomatic interests,” he added. India, for instance, has stepped up its outreach to Africa, a continent where China has made deep inroads, with military exercises being used as one of the tools.

Then, of course, there is strategic signaling to countries like China through exercises like the quadrilateral `Malabar’ among India, the US, Japan and Australia, the last edition of which was conducted off Guam in the Western Pacific towards end-August.

The growing strategic congruence to deter coercion in the Indo-Pacific also came through the `Quad-plus-France’ exercise called La Pérouse’ in the Bay of Bengal in April.

Having already set a scorching pace in undertaking exercises this year, India has several more scheduled in the last four months. A`Quad-plus-UK’ naval exercise, for instance, is slated in the Bay of Bengal next month.

This will be followed by the first tri-service exercise with the UK, centered around the 65,000-tonne aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth with its fifth-generation F-35B `lightning’ fighter jets, off the western coast from October 24-27. India has undertaken tri-service exercises only with the US and Russia till now.

The Indian Army, having just concluded bilateral exercises `Indra’ in Russia and `Kazind’ in Kazakhstan, has currently deployed around 200 soldiers for the ongoing 17-nation `Zapad’ exercise at Nizhny in Russia. {China is not participating this time while India is. However, a much larger bilateral military exercise between Russia & China took place last month in China. Both countries termed the exercis as forming part of the 'Zapad'. Was it some sort of a compromise in order to let India in Zapad-2021? What is the reason? China & Pakistan are observers for Zapad-2021.}

Other forthcoming Army exercises include `Surya Kiran’ with Nepal, `Mitra Shakti’ with Sri Lanka, `Ajeya Warrior’ with the UK, `Yudh Abhyas’ with the US and `Shakti’ with France in the September-November timeframe.

The Navy, in turn, has conducted bilateral exercises with countries ranging from Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand to Kenya, UAE, Qatar, Brunei, Bahrain, Egypt, UK and Germany this year.Indian warships also undertook their first-ever naval exercises with countries like Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Sudan and the European Union Naval Taskforce.

Not to be left behind, the IAF dispatched its Sukhoi-30MKI fighters and C-17 Globemaster-III aircraft to take part in the `Desert Flag’ exercise, which saw participation of air forces from India, US, France, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, at the Al Dhafra airbase in March. “India is steadily enhancing its military outreach to the strategically-located Persian Gulf region,” said an officer.

From the ^^ article:
He added that talks revolved around leveraging the technical base available in India for mutual benefit and the focus of talks was on a safe and stable Indian Ocean Region.
This the the US Navy Chief of Naval Operations talking i.e. the Navy boss and a member of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee. How can the technical base available in India be leveraged? One possibility is repairs and maintenance for US Navy ships which Indian Navy shipyards will be able to perform. The second possibility, far flung though it may seem, is lease of some USN LA class SSNs, currently mothballed which the IN with it's experience operating nuclear powered submarines and with a readily trained crew will be able to quickly put into operation. At the rate at which China is expanding it's offensive capability, by the time the Australians get their first SSN in the water under the AUKUS agreement by 2040, China will have eaten everybody's lunch.

https://twitter.com/DrSJaishankar/statu ... 18571?s=20 ---> Visited the Ovda airbase to meet the Indian Air Force participants at Ex Blue Flag - No 1 Sqn “TIGERS”. Delighted to see the mutual respect and chemistry between Indian and Israeli Air Force professionals. Defense and security are key pillars of our relationship.
