The large stock of these types could be made use of by the IN,acquiring a few more modernised IL-38s at least at reasonable cost. The Bears have unmatched range and endurance and kitted out with BMos ASMs of 600KM+,plus even strat. missiles.desi LRCMs, would be very formidable assets in taking the war to the enemy n his own doorstep,as the Russians have been doing with their Bear flights to the UK's airspace.

Austim,true,Ru types have also had their problems,but are rarely touted as much as western manufacturers do. The fact that a Russian sub can detect an RN "stealth" warship ,with so much of special features is a v.interesting reflection,why the IN should invest more of its money in UW warfare,where it is sorely depleted in subs and is facing an enormous challenge from the Sino-Pak JV.

So what is the difference, if any between the 2007_2010 mig35 and this new one.? Just a newer aesa. Nothing truly radical. Still great bang for the buck though.

I think its main failing is the overly limited range due to 2 engines on a small trim fuselage.
I dont believe its wiki combat radius of 1000km. there are no structural mods over the older Mig29K to add more internal fuel.

a block52 F16 with CFT will outrange it handily

New look for the MiG-29

MiG-35 - very "meaningful" index in the history of domestic aviation. At various times, under him understand the different machines, including fundamentally dissimilar. In particular, in the 1990s, it was assumed that the index of the MiG-35 fighter will get a promising new generation, whose prototype was shown under the symbol MiG-1.44.

Domestic long Air Force were not interested in the purchase of new MiGs in general, allocating funds up to a limited amount of work on the repair of front machines. New lightweight

The internal fuel capacity of Mig-35 has increased compared to Mig-29 almost doubled if my memory is right and its range is increased by atleast 50 % on internal fuel

Actually range should not be such an issue. It has a pretty good fuel fraction iirc... 5+ tons of fuell on a 11 ton airframe. On internal fuel alone, it should be better than the blk 50 and blk60 solahs since the latter have gained tons of weight without corresponding increase in fuel capacity.

As far as cfts are concerned, these would increase range but cause performance issues. Note also that getting a bolt on cft on the 35 shouldn't be so difficult because that is the same setup for the smt.

Having said this, i have to say I'm a bit disappointed with this repeat attempt at upgradng and offering the 35. At the very least they could have tried increasing number of pylons and payload to about 7.5tons and multiple racks Ideally an intake blocker and an open architecture for radar and other systems would have been nice. Perhaps even a similar approach to engines or at least higher thrust rd33mks at 10 tons should have been attempted. A promise to help get kaveri in production variants and export rights would also tempt India. Demo of pakfa weapons would also be sweet.

But alas no such attempts....just the same 35 repackaged a bit. Shoddy attempt, i don't see India falling for it. Buggers need tho learn a bit from the gripen pr dept

TVC hasn't been mentioned...or has it? A couple of airshows ago,a Typhoon pilot,who'd flown almost everything said, "nothing compares with a MIG-35 when dogfighting",but touted the EF as being far better equipped with advanced sensor fusion,etc. The cost of acquisition of a 35 vs the competition,and establishment of the entire production facility here is the key Q,along with what TOT comes with it. The Gripen is the front-runner to me,but it still has a Yanqui engine. The naval requirement may tip the scales.

Two more are being acquired for the Phalcon AWACS system. I wonder why the A-330 is being selected fro the indigenous AEW bird when commonality with the IL-76/476 would be a better option.Even more striking is the cost of each.An A-330 costs about $230 M+ while that o a new IL-76MD/476 is only $60M! Is the choice of the A-330 meant to help Airbus which has a prod. problem.How can an almost 4 times the cost be justified when the primary AWACS Phalcon bird is used aboard an IL-76MD platform with similar endurance/range? One sincerely hopes that this does not turn out to be another backscratch for Airbus as the C-17 acquisition was for Boeing.At least the C-17 was the largest heavyweight bird around at the time and IL-76MD/476 prod. hadn't yet started from Russia. Let's hope the A-330 selection doesn't end up the AW way! INterestingly,the radar on top of the A-330 is what is being used on the far smaller EMB birds.How come? Do we really need such a large and expensive aircraft for a radar which is not the equiv. of that of a Phalcon? Even if a similar indigenous "chapatti" were to be used for the desi AEW programme,surely using the similar and vastly cheaper IL-76MD being used for the Phalcon system would be the obvious choice ob every front?

Instead,if we used a smaller aircraft than either an A-330/IL-76MD,but larger than an EMB,say a Boeing 737 900ER ($85M)/Airbus 320 Neo,($100M),we would be able to get twice the number of aircraft,thrice if a Boeing is bought instead than the 6 A-330s. Gents,this deal needs a thorough review.

Airbus has been forced to reduce production rates from 10/mo to 6/mo during 2016 and 2017. This will remain until the A330neo kicks in during the second half of 2017. Airbus CFO Wilhelm said the recent A330ceo orders by Saudi Arabian and China for 57 A330ceos now secures rate 6 and it will not have to be lowered further. The bridge to A330neo is “secured,” he said. Enders filled in that these orders were not sold at cost, but had a sales price that generated profit margin to Airbus.

AO: Hello, and welcome to the Center for International Maritime Security’s Sea Control podcast. I’m Ashley O’Keefe, the CIMSEC Secretary, and I’m here today with Dr. Tom Fedyszyn, of the U.S. Naval War College. He’s been a member of the faculty here since 2000, and he serves as the senior advisor to the College’s Russian Maritime Studies Institute. He received a PhD from the Johns Hopkins University in Political Science while he was on active duty. His 31-year naval career included military assignments as the U.S. Naval Attaché to Russia, and two tours at NATO headquarters in Brussels. He commanded the USS Normandy and the USS William V. Pratt, and deployed to the Mediterranean, Baltic, and Norwegian Seas. He was a principal contributor to both the Lehman-era 1980s maritime strategy, and NATO’s strategic concept following the Cold War. He’s a nationally recognized expert and publishes regularly on maritime strategy, NATO strategy, and the Russian Navy, which is our topic today. …………………………………..

AO: Given that lens, my next question may seem a little silly, but what about the Shtorm 23000E, the next generation aircraft carrier? Defense News was reporting about it earlier this month, citing possible Indian Navy interest. Does this seem likely to be built? Will they keep trying?

TF: The Russian economy is built on exporting minerals (mostly oil and gas). Below that, it’s arms exports. They export almost as much as we do! But they have such a small economy that their arms sales really matter. So, when you look at Russian military capability, sometimes that’s just a small part of why they deploy. A larger part of why they deploy is to show off what type of technology they have and to try to sell it. You mentioned the Indian Navy. When I was in Moscow, there were more Indian officers there than from any other nation. U.S. was second. Why? Because the Russians, by the default of politics, ended up selling India its navy. Still today, about 70 percent of the Indian Navy is Russian. I’ve spoken to lots of Indian Navy officers about this. The sense is that they don’t like the Russian ships, they don’t work too well, they’re suboptimal, but they can afford them. The U.S. has this double-whammy where we’re not that good at selling high technology, and when we sell it, it costs a lot of money. And the Indian budget makes them buy Russian – and they continue to buy Russian. So, should the Russians be able to continue to build the Shtorm, India would be the most likely nation that would buy it.

But remember, of course, Russia just sold and delivered to them the Vikramaditiya, a ski-jump carrier which was 4 years overdue, 300 percent over budget, and every Indian naval officer I’ve spoken to has said, “Well, it’s not a good ship, but we needed an aircraft carrier and we could afford it, so we got what we got.” If this Shtorm really does turn out to be good, the Indians may well want it, but the Indians are also in the process of building their own nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, which would be their first choice, and if they can build it (they’re not very good at building ships either, unfortunately), they’ll stick with their domestic product.

Now, will the Russians actually build it? I would be very pessimistic. When they talk about Shtorm, they talk about building between 3 and 6. That’s how definitive they are – they can be off by a factor of two. It seems that they’re leaning in the direction of nuclear power, but sometimes you can read press articles that suggest maybe not. So they’re so unsure of where this is going, and their track record of having a yard that can build a 65,000 ton ship…it’s unlikely. In fact, if they ever get around to it, they’ll probably have to build it in two sections and then weld it together. I’m no shipbuilder, but I know this can’t be easy.

Submarine defense: Russian subs posing Pacific threat to US Navy
"The Zvezda shipyard is carrying out profound modernization of Project 949A nuclear submarines, including the replacement of armament with the Kalibr missile complex and also the replacement of navigation, life support and other systems," Borisov said.
Overall, Russia has built 11 Project 949A Antey submarines. Eight of them have remained operational with the Russian Navy. Each submarine has a displacement of 24,000 tonnes and is armed with 24 Granit cruise missile launchers and six torpedo tubes.
CEO of Russia’s Rubin Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering Igor Vilnit told TASS that all the submarines of this type operational with the Navy would undergo upgrade.

Reequipping the Oscar class (NATO desig.) subs with smaller Kalibir missiles,but which have an awesome range displayed in the Syrian conflict,will perhaps allow each sub to carry at least 72 Missiles in addition to around 20+ torpedoes,etc. The 949A class is also quieter than early Akulas,but not as quiet as the lat ones. If a deep modernisation is planned as reported,new quieting measures will feature in the sub's modernisation apart from newer weapon systems. These subs are huge assets for the ruN.A few years ago,an Ru expert even suggested that Russia sold/leased a few of these to India to counter China.

Though this report is sev. months old,it gives specs for the latest RuN torpedoes to equip its bnewest N-subs.They have a 50kmh speed and 50 km range as against 40kmh and 40 km.
Our desi Varunastra hevayweight torpedoes to be fitted aboard our Kilos,replacing old Sov. ones, have a speed of 40kmh and range of 40km which is also a good capability esp. in our littoral waters.

Russia's Most Powerful Nuclear Attack Submarine Ever Is Almost Ready for Sea

Russia is set to launch its second Yasen-class nuclear-powered attack submarine on March 30. Called Kazan, the new vessel is an upgraded Project 885M design that is in many ways much more capable than the lead ship of the class, K-560 Severodvinsk.

"Kazan is expected to be rolled out and put afloat on March 30," a Russian defense source told the Moscow-based TASS news agency.

The Russian Navy will take delivery of Kazan in 2018. Once the vessel is operational, she will be the most formidable enemy submarine that the U.S. Navy has ever faced. “It’s probably the most capable nuclear powered submarine out there fielded by a potential adversary,” Center for Naval Analyses Russian military affairs specialist Michael Kofman told The National Interest.

Russia plans to build a total of seven Project 885M submarines—Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Arkhangelsk and Perm are currently under construction at the Sevmash shipyards on the White Sea port city of Severodvinsk.

Russia announces deepest defence budget cuts since 1990s
Figures released by the Russian Federal Treasury have confirmed that Russia's defence budget has been cut by 25.5% for 2017, falling from RUB3.8 trillion (USD65.4 billion) to RUB2.8 trillion.

The reduction represents the largest cut to military expenditure in the country since the early 1990s.

The reduction follows an extended period of large increases to Russian defence spending with growth having achieved an average rate of 19.8% a year since 2011 in nominal terms. Despite the cut, the 2017 budget will remain about 14.4% higher than the level of defence spending seen in 2014 in nominal terms.

The Russian government initially outlined plans to reduce defence expenditure in the draft of the three year budget for 2017 to 2019 released in October 2016. As a result spending on National Defence falling from 22.9% of state expenditure in 2016 to 17.5% in 2017, the lowest level since 2014, and will fall from around 4.7% of GDP to 3.0%, its lowest level against this measure since 2013.

According to the state budget for 2017 to 2019 defence spending is set to fall by a further 3.8% in 2018 to RUB2.7 trillion before returning to growth of 3.2% in 2019.While the cut to the Russian defence budget for 2017 appears severe it should be viewed in light of a large boost to military expenditure which materialised in the latter stages of 2016. Spending on National Defence was initially set at RUB3.1 trillion for 2016 but later increased to RUB3.8 trillion during the course of the financial year.

Although the cause of the increase for 2016 remains unclear it seems likely that at least part of the additional funding was allocated to cover the cost of Russian military operations in Syria and related activities.

Lower operational costs may account for a significant part of the reduction in spending however the constrained budgetary conditions are likely to see new procurement activity slow as well. As far as defence budget goes , in 2010 Medvedev government formulated SAP 2020 , the goal was to spend 23 Trillion Roubles from 2011-2020 as part of Defence and MIC budget , Defence 20 Trillion and 3 MIC ....Since then the Numbers are like this

HYPERSONIC cruise missiles developed by Russia could destroy the Royal Navy’s new aircraft carriers in a single strike, experts fear.

Deadly Zircon missiles can travel up to SIX times the speed of sound at 4,600 mph and reportedly more than 600 miles.

Military experts warn the weapon has changed the face of modern warfare, reported the Sunday People.

Currently, the Royal Navy’s Sea Ceptor can shoot down missiles travelling at 2,300 mph, which is nowhere near Zircon’s capabilities.
One senior Naval source told the Sunday People: “Hypersonic missiles are virtually unstoppable.
“With no method of protecting themselves against missiles like the Zircon the (UK) carrier would have to stay out of range, hundreds of miles out at sea.”


Pete Sandeman, a naval expert, said: “Even if the missile is broken up or detonated by close-in weapons, the debris has so much kinetic energy that the ship may still be badly damaged.”

Zircon missiles can cover 155 miles in just 2.5 minutes, which is faster than a bullet from sniper's rifle.
The "enemy will not have enough time to get scared let alone react", according to military website Strategic Culture.

Nuclear-powered Admiral Nakhuimov battle cruiser could be the first Russian ship equipped with the lightning fast weapon when it returns to service next year.

The rocket-mounted weapons come equipped with a radar target seeker and the ability to avoid enemy missiles, and they can be launched from land, sea carrier or submarines and fitted with a range of warheads from explosive to nuclear.

Harry J Kazianis, executive editor of US foreign policy magazine The National Interest, wrote such missiles could turn "America's super-carriers into multi-billion dollar graveyards for thousands of sailors".

Kremlin chiefs announced in October the development of the Satan II nuclear rockets - each capable of wiping out an area the size of Texas or France.

Last month it emerged Russia had secretly deployed a cruise missile in violation of a historic arms control treaty with the US.

How is this a surprise? Russia has had a hypersonic program since the cold war/SU days and has over the last many years emphasized research and development to that end and has been treating hypersonic cruise missiles as a priority for many years like most of its near peer competitors. BTW your linked article shows a picture of the Boeing waverider at the start of the article.

Any serious Scramjet Engine deployed operationally by Russia , US , India or others in the game is atleast a decade away the challanges is both the advanced materials and scram-engine burn.

What we are looking at in Zircon or similar program in India is Advanced ramjet pushing the missile to ~ Mach 4.5 that we would see come into operational deployment in next 4-5 years ....but this is not Scramjet but a better model of existing Ramjet engine an interim stage.

It will be interesting to see if the Adm.Nakhu. will carry the new missile next yr. The US ABM vessel that was posted by Brar earlier needs to be compared with our own missile tracking ship ,pics in the IN td. If I recollect,there were some drawings of the vesssl posted some months ago. I wonder whether there is space amidships for our very own ABM SAMs and whether B-8 has the potential of an SM series.

PS:The RAF/RN has been very hard put to counter incoming Bears,making teasing runs towards the British coastline/airspace,let alone countering incoming Yakhont/BMos missiles. It is a great pity how the RN has been allowed to downsize,both in numbers and capability,but the 2 QE CVs should give it a shot in the arm from 2020 onwards,but these will still have to face incoming sub and air-launched Ru supersonic missiles,possibly hypersonic too if these reports are accurate.

Russia is expected to begin serial production of hypersonic missile Tsirkon or Zircon soon. The missile boasts of speed five times than that of speed of sound. Reports say the missile can travel with a speed of upto 4,600 mph or 7,400 km/h, which makes it almost impossible to be stopped.

With its enormous speed, Zircon is capable of evading the best anti-missile systems presently in use across the world. A report in The Independent said that UK's Royal Navy's new aircraft carriers would be unable to stop.The Royal Navy's current Sea Ceptor missile system can only shoot down missiles travelling up to 2,300mph, the report said.On the other hand, the US Navy is worried that Russia may fit Zircon to its nuclear-powered Kirkov warship.Zircon works on the scramjet technology to attain its hypersonic speeds. The missile uses air pressure for propulsion. A specially designed system pushes air from the atmosphere into the combustion chamber where the air is mixed with the on-board fuel to provide energy.What makes Zircon lightweight and faster than other missiles is that it doesn't carry oxidizer. There are no fans or turbines to propel it, which essentially means less chances of any mechanical failure. Russia may have taken the lead in developing a hypersonic missile, but India is not far behind. India is developing a second generation BrahMos-II missile is collaboration with Russia. The missile will use the same scramjet technology that Zircon has.The BrahMos-II is expected to have a range of 600 km. The missile is expected to be ready for testing by 2020.

Russians have nicely filled their sub pipeline such that in 2020 they will have 7 yasen and 6 borei class in service

In 2018 the improved versions of both classes will get started.
