In one of the old video , where Rocky and Mayur visiting Sukhoi -MKI squadron , we can see a face similar to Abinanandan along with pilots.

1: IS it the same guy who is with TSP..?
2: If yes , If he was part of Sukhoi squadron why he was in Mig -21..? or is it a common practice to switch between fighters..?

Nikhil, did they build the memorial in the last 60 years? NO
Who did? Modi

What exactly makes them worthy of an invite? the fact that they slept on the file for that long? Well Modi slept on the invite in that case. When you try and appease everyone, you appease no one.

don't want to speculate about his identity.

In general however pilots Might go onto fly multiple types over their career. It might simply be that a Mig21 sqn had a vacancy at a certain rank and no mig21 pilot was available at that rank to fill that slot. After all the type is due to be retired and most pilots flying those would go on to fly other types.

Please answer the question only if it is open information:

On the MiG 21 Bis, are the countermeasures (Chaff/flares) dispensed manually by the pilot when he believes he is threatened or is there an automated system?

Contest to design new police memorial

https://www.hindustantimes.com/delhi-ne ... wZd5H.html

DELHI Updated: Nov 28, 2010 00:47 IST

Nivedita Khandekar, Hindustan Times

More than two years after the previous National Police Memorial was pulled down for being an eyesore, the authorities have announced a national-level competition for architects to design a new one.

The new memorial would be built at the same site as the earlier steel structure — said to have blocked the view of the Rashtrapati Bhavan from Shanti Path — which was removed following a High Court directive.

The site for the structure, which would be built in memory of police personnel who died in the line of duty, is a 6.30-acre plot at the northern end of the Chanakyapuri Vista.

Sources said the home ministry announced the competition on Thursday.

As the earlier memorial was dismantled because it violated guidelines for Lutyen’s Delhi, Thursday’s announcement, this time, clearly mentions that the height of the proposed structure should not exceed nine metre. The earlier memorial was a 150-foot structure of a globe hung between four steel pillars, built at a cost of Rs 8 crore.

“The height, in consonance with the predominant maximum tree height of the environs, should be such so as to ensure that the view of the Rashtrapati Bhawan dome is not obstructed from anywhere around the site,” the design brief read.

The home ministry’s announcement also mentions involvement of landscape architects in the process.

Said Savita Punde, former president of the Indian Society of Landscape Architects: “Such competitions bring out a lot of churning and our fraternity and public in general feels involved.”

There has been a lot of talk about air to air combat and missiles being fired/missing etc. Here is an old video of Israeli F-15s against Syrian MiG 21s. Note how the first missile misses even though it gets close and he had a lock.

Tejas's cranked Delta wing has obvious advantages over Pure Delta wing. Refer excellent article from our BR expertshttp://delhidefencereview.com/2019/02/23/tracking-the-tejas-the-tejas-mk2-grows-a-pair-becomes-the-medium-weight-fighter/

Still Sweden progressed from Cranked Delta wing based Viggen to Pure Delta wing based Gripen. Additionally all of the active Delta fighters (Rafale, Eurofighter, J10) are based on Pure Delta based wing.

Are we missing something here ?

^^ size.

None of those canard deltas are as small as LCA. You need long enough lever arm for either tail or canard for it to be effective. Which means for a limited length of 13m you are bound to end up with small wing. Rectangular wing + tail could have fitted in the form factor but then it would have taken a hit of SQR requirement of ITR and Hot-and-high performance. Given that the closed coupled canards can only be fitted behind the cockpit, that puts constraints on how small the overall length can be. Delta wings have rather aftward CG but forward position of CL, compared to the rectangular wings i.e. too much static instability and high pitch up tendency. (Addition of canards only aggravate the problem. OTOH, due to rather aftward CG position, tail becomes a less attractive option due to low lever arm length). You need enough fuselage weight ahead of the wings to balance. Given the radar/nosecone and cockpit in front fuselage, you can only cramp so much weight in it in given length, which means you effectively need longer fuselage. Which in turn means longer overall length. This is why length constraint is the biggest bane for LCA design.

Basically ADA had choice to either go with smaller wing with canards, or a larger wing with no canard. Given complexities in Canard integration with FCS (there is a conflict between maneuverability and stability requirement, The Swedish learnt it the hard way), they probably felt its not worth going for it. Lets not get hung up on what configuration. What matters is whether the ASQR is getting fulfilled or not. With double delta, LCA designers traded in CL for wing area vis-à-vis delta + canard combination and got roughly the same lift. There is no one correct way here. Else we would see all aircrafts with delta wings and canards. Legacy and experience also matters. Rectangular wing (with LERX) + tail is equally effective solution as delta wing + canard and so is a well designed double delta.

BTW SAAB Viggen has its wings are shaped the way they are for the similar reasons they are for LCA, and in addition to some more. Aerodynamics wise, the could have simply cut off the apex portion of the wings ahead of the point where the LE sweep is reduced now. But that would have created issues with CG management, Area ruling while keeping full apex without reduction in LE sweep angle would have resulted in too much pitch up tendency. Hence the mid-way solution between keeping full wing with constant LE and clipping the entire apex was chosen. But this lower inboard sweep section in Viggen is not as big a feature from the perspective of its impact on overall aerodynamics as its for LCA. Main reason being, for Viggen this part is under rather huge canards.

Many thanks JayS ji for elaborating so beautifully to this aam Abdul.

Could not understand this bit.
"(Addition of canards only aggravate the problem.)".

Wouldn't adding Canards balance the aftwards CG towards the front and hence adjusting the undesirable Pitch up tendency ?

Additional question : All Medium weight fighters could still have opted for LCA MK2/MWF configuration with Canards + Cranked Delta. This would have atleast provided an added benefit of lower wing loading w.r.t their present wing design.

Canards would pull the Centre of lift upstream more than the CG. Hence pitch up would increase. In MWF it works out as there is 1.35m plug added ahead of the wings which will be full of avionics and fuel. So CG shift it significant just due to that.

Not all want lower wing loading. For example, if Hot and high performance is not needed its a unnecessary baggage to carry. One needs to see what are the main design drivers for each aircrafts. Many times the design decisions are dictated by seemingly irrelevant reason. Aircraft design is a tricky business.

K8 Vs IJT Sitara

Postby Avinandan » 03 May 2019 18:17

Comparing the performance between K8 and IJT Sitara, i could see that K8 has better flight performance and Range charateristics than IJT Sitara inspite of having a lowered powered engine. Why so ?

Sitara : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HAL_HJT-36_Sitara

Aircraft flying over 6km in height will be detected over 50 km away and will be the responsibility of akash sam. QRSAM is for low flying drone, aircraft doing nap of the earth flying which is like a few hundred mts above land which means they will be detected not more than 10 km out due to curvature of earth.

i have a naive pooch (plz dont laugh)

one of the chronic issue with our DPSU mfg is the lack of quality. chalta hai and sarkari culture is often blamed. with the current slow down in auto sector cant these parts suppliers be encouraged to enter the def mfg? here is a tweet from rajnath singh https://twitter.com/rajnathsingh/status ... 4914115584

is this even feasible or am i smoking something potent ?

1. What happens to the Artillery barrell (or any gun barrell for that matter) once it is worn out. Can we compress it radially and regroove it and reuse it ?

2. Can the caliber of a gun increased (temporarily for firing few shells) by adding a screwable extension ?Similar to adding a silencer to a Pistol .

Can't speak for the first but let me try and address the second. The addition of a silencer doesn't extend its calibre. It is merely a method to dissipate the high energy of the gasses exiting from the end of the barrel in a more controlled manner such it doesn't result in a very loud bang. From what I have read, what you are suggesting is not possible since the screw on attachment would have to bear the pressure at the joint such thay it doesn't leak or cause it shoot the attachement along with the projectile and also such that it is perfectly lined with the inner surface of the barrel.

Based on what I know, it may not be practically possible as a field solution. Happpy to be corrected though.
