An estimation of attrition rate using Ex. Gagan Shakti sorties

http://www.indiandefencereview.com/news ... estimates/

The estimate is cautious as the after the first day most of the airfields in TSP would be cratered.

Bengaluru to host Aero India air show in February

The Defence Ministry on Saturday announced that the next edition of the biennial Aero India air show would be held here from February 20 to 24, 2019.

"The government has decided to hold the Aero India 2019 in Bengaluru from February 20 to 24, 2019," said the ministry in a statement from New Delhi.

The five-day event will be held at the Yelahanka base of the Indian Air Force (IAF) on the city's northern outskirts amid tight security.

Tx.Ramana for that v.insightful article on loss estimates.
150+ aircraft for just 3 days! Imagine if the war lasts a few weeks.

This reinforces my thesis about safety in numbers and greatter use of PGMs.War losses due to ground fire in our wars with Pak was 60+% Therefore an accelerated programme to equip the IAF with affordable PGMs, bomb kits for dumb bombs, glide bombs, and higher inventories of game-changers like BMos and BMos- NG to come smaller and lighter in size.

We also need to leverage the used of ( armoured) armed trainers like the Hawk AJTs, also equipped with some basic stand- off weaponry.Acquiring UCAVs will add to the
loss reductions, but UCAVs are also v.expensive and have very limited payloads.

From the sortie rate, it's seen that theJags have a good turn around time, at least 5/24, Yet, going in fast and low they will experience the same sort of flak that the RAF Tornadoes did in Desert Storm., with higher losses than other types. This calls for upgrades/ new Jags with additional armour protection for the cockpit, etc., like A-10s and SU-25s.It's also why the Pakis are acquiring in llarge number their modest and cheap JF-17, even if is a Chin turkey in disguise,in large numbers they can absorb heavier losses.

So how do we add asap numbers to the fleet? That is the billion $ Q. Even the Raffy will experience losses.
Accelerated LCA prod. and a huge cost- cutting exercise
must be undertaken so that hundreds are built to replace MIG-21s.If that doesn't materialise , then the most inexpensive and cost-effective firang fighter may appear with the MRCA redux.

“he said that sleep deprivation among Indian Air Force (IAF) pilots was induced by indulging in social media late into the night.”

"Everybody appears to be spending long hours on social media, late nights. Most flight briefings, sometimes, are as early as 6 am and pilots haven't had enough sleep,"

"I request the medical practitioners to find a solution for this problem.”

“Earlier if a pilot had one drink too many, the bar man would know. If he failed to notice, the others would know and he would be laid off flying for the day. Today we even have breath analysers,"

“Since these pilots have briefings at 6 am, they are expected to sleep early. But most are active on social media late (in the night),”

Our adversary will use social media for psychological warfare and deception. We must leverage it to our advantage.”

Igla SAMs "stations" are located at some on the nuclear installations. The air space around these installationsis no-fly zone. These Igla installations are manned 24/7 and work on basis of shoot-at-sight ask and answer questions later.

These Igla stations may be later manned by CISF.

More such stations are planned around other defence and industrial installations.

The range of the present Igla missile is 5 km, a new "Super Igla" will enter service in next 2-3 years. What is this "Super Igla"

per some hollywood films the white house also has a few stingers as a last ditch if airborne attack is imminent.

when threat level is high, amraam/stinger armed hummers are parked on the washington mall with portable radar vehicles.

LOL
having observed the exercises of Igla at a close range I can assure you that a dedicated strike formation (unknown) to the defenders has not chance of being shot down in the area unless they linger.

So imagine a group of F-15s carrying laser guided bombs or conventional bombs are arriving from a direction to destroy a reactor under construction, they will go low below the immediate horizon of the occasional sweep of eye balls that by the time they are visible .... it will be a race between human screaming and assimilation of commands between 4 different people and the velocity of a F-15 at close to 2000 Km/h

The F-15 will win.

Iglas or Stingers will be successful when a relatively unknown target is being attacked such as a camo-ed in Brigade HQ by enemy a/c or helicopters. Your iglas might have a chance.

I have seen this argument being put forward very logically by Air Defense gunners for the defence of Leh, where the F-16 could appear on top of Leh and be gone in less than 15 seconds and half of that would be the point where the bombs would be on glide path to the runway.

The only way to defeat them was a radar scanning continuously that sat at a much much higher elevation to Leh airfield and defend it.

A very good way to understand is understand the tactics or duties allocated to the Soviet aircraft shot down in Afghanistan , they were all lingering or following pre-determined paths to attack or evade, or were inbound or taking off from airfields.

Satellite control set to give drones more sting
India is set for a quantum jump in the way it undertakes drone operations by upgrading from existing ground control stations to satellite-control of military unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to boost their range, endurance and flexibility.

This significant capability boost will come with the launch of GSAT-7A, an advanced military an advanced military communications satellite built by ISRO, in November. “The satellite is specially geared for RPA (remotely-piloted aircraft) operations,” said a defence ministry source.

The main problem these weapons (Stinger/Avenger) are trying to solve in this context is the UAV/UCAV threat or 911 type airliner threat, not supersonic fighters that need to fully cooperate for them to get a kill. You can use more capable missiles against them. In Singha's example, Washington DC is defended by NASAMS and there may be Avenger/Stingers there as well for precisely the type of threat I described earlier. Neither of the systems is there to fend off a direct attack by strike fighters because that threat just doesn't exist.

FWIW....article from May 2017....

Sharpening The Tiger’s Teeth
https://asianmilitaryreview.com/2017/05 ... teeth-iaf/
According to Angad Singh, an Indian aerospace and defence expert based in New Delhi: “The MiG-29UPG is similar to the MiG-21 Bison upgrade in that it is pulling as much 21st century capability as possible into the MiG-29. In fact, the Air Force is leveraging as much technology as it can from the Indian Navy MiG-29K fleet.” Mr. Singh continued that: “(A) lot of the new avionics and (components) come from the MiG-29K. It will give the MiG-29UPG capability for all the air-to-air missiles in the Indian inventory, and a lot better air-to-ground capability over the original MiG-29Bs, including a PGM (Precision Guided Munition) capability.” Unfortunately, this upgrade programme, which is being performed domestically, is suffering from considerable delays, and informed sources believe the delays are due to shortfalls in upgrade kit availability from Russia.

So what type of pistol was that?
Do senior officer carry loaded firearms?
Was the safety off and round in chamber fired?
Seems very sad as he is about to retire.

this chilling video shows how a rogue SUV being pursued got inside an US AFB and literally drove past an entire flight line of F-18 Hornet before being "nailed" down by one of the parked one in a different flight line !! Absolutely zero perimeter security was involved.

Given Pathankoth attack and many other air bases across the nation this video gives a chilling reminder how billion dollars worth of assets can be exposed to rough elements without much of an hassle. A good video for AB perimeter security audit.

After Ram Nath Kovind’s Tajikistan trip, India hopes to expand strategic presence at Ayni base.
India, seeking to expand its strategic presence in Central Asia, is hoping to expand its military base in Tajikistan — its only such facility abroad — where Indian Air Force and Border Roads Organisation personnel have been stationed since 2005.

President Ram Nath Kovind visited Ayni Air Base, about 15 km west of the Tajik capital Dushanbe, during his October 7–9 trip and signalled India’s interest in expanding its presence there, according to sources. Almost 150 Indian personnel have been posted in Ayni. Kovind met the IAF contingent at the base.

India established a presence at Ayni in the days following the September 11 attacks and the US campaign in Afghanistan.

At that time, India operated a hospital at Farkhor on the Tajik-Afghan border, where legendary Afghan political leader Ahmed Shah Masood was treated.

India, Russia and Tajikistan agreed in 2002 to operate Ayni on a rotational basis once construction work at the air base was completed. The Border Roads Organisation helped to rebuild the airstrip and associated facilities at Ayni.

With India entering the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, a Eurasian alliance, and keen on stabilising Afghanistan in collaboration with Central Asian states and Russia besides expanding the counterterror partnership, boosting facilities at Ayni will be handy, experts pointed out.

Expanding defence ties with Tajikistan was among the talking points during President Kovind’s trip.
