Sounds good- an entire Sukhoi engine manufactured from the material stage, by HAL.
and almost twice as expensive

didnt mean to sound like Philip  but just pointing out .. hopefully, a derivative or something will come out of all those infrastructures once the 30 mki production line comes to a close ...

Interesting...
Kartik wrote:There may be some hope as yet..the new Def Min has pulled up the IAF for cribbing about squadron shortage but not providing solutions that could be implemented to address it. The IAF has one possible solution- speeding up development of the LCA Mk2 but given their track record, they'll want a ready made solution and that will be the Single Engine Fighter program.

Defence Minister pulls up IAF
The top brass of the Indian Air Force has reportedly been pulled up by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for inappropriate responses on its depleting squadron strength before a parliamentary panel.

At a meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee on Defence on October 27, IAF officials, including Vice Chief Air Marshal S B Deo, were reportedly criticised by the minister, as they only talked about the problems related to depleting squadron strength, but did not offer any solution.

As the meeting discussed the IAF's depleting strength, Deo explained the problems to the lawmakers but stopped short of suggesting a solution to the crisis. This angered the minister, who wanted IAF and defence ministry officials to also tell the MPs about the possible solution.

The officials later told the minister that in the next meeting of the panel, they would come prepared with possible solutions on the vexed issue.

The IAF's squadron strength has come down to 33 in comparison to the sanctioned strength of 42. Of the 33 squadrons, nearly 10 squadrons are made up of old MiG-21 and MiG-27 aircraft that are being phased out.

The only new induction is 36 French origin Rafale aircraft. The first one is expected to be inducted by 2019. The IAF would also get another 36 Su-30 MKI aircraft and plans to induct more than 120 indigenous Tejas light combat aircraft.

To make up for the MiG multi-role combat jets on the verge of retirement, the IAF is looking at purchasing more single-engine fighter aircraft of the same class. The government, however, is yet to take a final decision on the proposal.

How about people come up with at-least three or four options to get to 42 squadrons and the time frame.?

Don't forget even the 33 squadrons have 10 squadrons with MiG heritage planes which also retire in say 10-15 years.

Learn the intricacies of program planning.

What you need is xls type of spread sheet with horizontal line with years on the top.
The vertical column will have type of planes.
Show the current 33 squadrons and as they decrement the 10 Migs squadrons.

Then add the new LCA, Su 30 MKI and Hawks, which are viable now.

Add New procurements
Add SE : F-16 or Grippen
F-18, Russian planes: FGFA
AMCA development

Added a row to keep the total squadrons.

Then see which are viable from cost, technical, and schedule.

Also IAF needs to do an evaluation of the aircraft capability.
For instance is LCA a one for one replacement for Mig 21 and Mig 27?
Considering range, load-out and swing role.

PS don't know what happened to my Hawk post.A good option for light attack /COIN for support of ground troops, etc. Hawk-I can stay out of SAM range while delivering munitions plus being slower than other fighters can assess the ground situ better by the pilot. The bird can carry a wide range of munitions incl. some missiles, same SR AAMs planned for the Jags.A few sqds. of armed Hawks would be v. valuable assets esp. for the IA who often crib about air support integral to the ground war.
AM Vinod Patney in another piece on joint ops made a
v.imp distinction between "planning for joint ops." and "planning joint ops ". In the current situ he advised against a "one point" CDS and theatre commands ,giving the ANC problems as an example, but advocated "joint planning" of operations by the services for seamless success.

At that time we never possessed top order aircraft like the West had and Pak had superior Sabres and Mirages ,the latter used to devastating effect by the Israelis against the Arabs. Yet our gallant IAF pilots with their little Gnats and Hunters in '65 and MIG-21s and SU-7s in '71 knocked the stuffing out of Pak.A Gnat even shot down a Mirage in '71.

Today we possess the best air-dominance fighter in the MKI barring the F-22, which has seen off all opposition in several air exercises. Both the upgraded MIG-29s and M2Ks are v. formidable multi-role fighters and our legacy upgraded Bisons shocked F-15s not too long ago!

Our current need is not to fall back both in qty. while maintaining our current qualitative advantage. There is a strong req for a stealth fighter from 2020+ to counter the Chinese stealth birds arriving. Why the FGFA progr. Where we have spent years of work and also some good money needs to be sealed. This would allow us to acquire the desired tech as co-partners which will serve us well to develop our AMCA and other future fighters, perhaps even an LCA-S. That program has to be pushed to the hilt to give us the numbers/replacements for hundreds of retiring MIGs at reasonable cost.If newbies like Tata and Adani have great ambitions of making F-16s and Gripens without even making a paper plane before, well at least Tata has made helo components for Boeing, why can't they produce the LCA instead?

How about making a decision on the engine upgrade for Jaguars? The single vendor bs was used by RR pulling out citing MoD rules against IAF fro choosing the Honeywell engine. RR wont supply any engines anyway.

MoD rules were used to cut off our own legs.

Can't understand why the Jag upgrade decision/action has languished for over 5 years.Reg. the engine, weren't uprated Adours part of the original plan? Did Honywell appear around the time of the N-deal and Snake-Oil Singh's Diwali presents to Uncle Sam?

Yes. RR got turned off and withdrew and that made it single vendor situation and boom Kalidasa move.

meantime HAL gives bogus promises of an uprated engine to be made by them!!!

But what extra capability the new engine brings? Can the Jags be used in the Himalayas with the new engine (currently, JAGS cannot be used at that altitude, engine does not produce enough thrust and it is slow, vulnerable to SAMS and fighter that prowls at that height). Can it then be used in Tibet or JK? If not, does the extra speed, etc. add anything of value in combat (for the money and the integration trouble).
Actually this would have been a good engine to learn turbofans for HAL. The turbofan in Jags are not cutting edge, you do not need the latest material. We could have perfected our own low end turbofan, that could be later used for many things, including trainers, UCAV, UAVs etc.

IAF problems can be substantially solved by minister and her boss in one stroke. First solution is to at least spend as much as pathetic UPA 2 gov was spending on defense.

UPA maintained defense spending to 2% of GDP all through it's 8 years. Three years of Modi govt has seen defense budget dropping down every single year and now stands at 1.5% of GDP. Half a percent of GDP is $13 Billion/year additional money. Sitaraman's govt has under spend as compared to UPA by ~$30 Billion. well that is enough money to buy 10 squadrons of fighter planes at $166 M/plane.

It is not slow. It is fast but because of high wing loading and low t/w ratio it's turning and climbing performance is degraded at high altitude. In high altitude valleys one has to be able to turn and climb fast to avoid ploughing into a mountainside.

I feel that squadron strength numbers are not keeping in in view of retirement of the 27 and jaguar's along with 29 and Mirage 2k in the 2030s. As they will be nearing the end of service life.

In addition the 42 squadron requirement is not keeping in view the potential for improvement in PLAF logistics capabilities if they increase the in-flight refueling capabilities by adding dedicated tankers. Based on domestic civilian airframe's that is currently in flight certification process.

I feel that we need to re assess our requirement of squadrons for dealing with a 2 front war in a conventional scenario.

Go ahead. IDSA came up with 65 squadrons and got booed.

Phadke was the author.

I think that's right number considering aircraft availability , war exigencies etc.

Titbit
the Mig-21 has a landing speed in excess of 300 km/h, the fastest for any military jet anywhere in the world in service today.
Some BRFite once commented that pilots have a gala time in peacetime and that real tension comes at wartime. I have, on several occasions tried to point out the ignorance of that comment. This is another example. The risk in war is only a little added risk - but each flight is work and risky work at that. Hitting the tarmac at 300 kmph on a day to day basis is hardly peacetime relaxation

And what would we do with those damned expensive planes? Hide them in bunkers in war because with each downed plane goes - what ten percent - of the IAF's annual budget? Stop dreaming of wasting good taxpayer monies. Spend on Indian. Even if LCA were not a world beater, it is Indian, it is cheap and we can field tons of it if the Government and the armed forces have the will. Quantity will always beat quality when quantity is of good enough quality.

The indigenous LCA story is distressing. The Tejas Mk I handed over to an unwilling IAF with just an Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) and an underpowered engine (F404-GE-IN20) in 2015 amidst much fanfare, is not a combat aircraft and can at best be used for training. Forty of these are on order even while they move sluggishly towards a Final Operational Clearance (FOC) which ought to have preceded induction into service. The final objective of a Mk II with an upgraded GE engine (F414-GE-INS6) ..

On a related note North of Jaisalmer/jodhpur and South of Punjab do we have any airbases in Rajastan? I think it is this gap which was exploited by the PAF in 65 and 71 wars to Attack Agra Airbase with B-57 night raids, Now even are Phalcons have some cover in Agra, not sure if the shelters are bomb proof, only the IAF IL 78's and An-32's expose themselves at AGRA.

Regarding PAF, I guess thier F-16 and JF-17 fleet is always kept in Air conditioned hangers, expect for a 1 or 2 J-7's and 1 F-16 at Sargodha, the rest of the PAF aircraft seem to be in shelters, the only exception seems to be Masroor/Maripur airbase in Karachi where the Mirages sit happily in the sun.

Indian Defence News [View All Articles]
IAF beefs up the Ladakh front as a search for a new airfield is revived
Sunday, November 05, 2017
By: Daily Mail UK
In the aftermath of the Doklam crisis, India is now planning to develop more airfields in the eastern Ladakh area along the China border so that it can rapidly deploy troops in large numbers in case of any misadventure by the neighbouring state.

'In Ladakh, we have realised that deploying troops for a long time or throughout the year is not feasible. Harsh winters and rough terrain make the job all the more difficult.

'This is why we plan to develop airfields where we can deploy troops in large numbers using air assets,' a top defence source said.

The Air Force is scouting airfields in the area from where the transport aircraft of the force can land and take off whenever required, the source said.

The Indian Army had issued an operational alert during the crisis, as part of which the troops had been deployed by it from the newly-raised mountain strike corps.

'Two brigades (6,000 troops) have already been withdrawn from there and sent back to their actual locations after we called off the alert about 10 days ago,' the source said.

It is understood that troops could not have been retained in the area due to the onset of harsh winters and beginning of snowfall, which would have completely blocked land routes and forced them to rely on air evacuation.

The deployment of an additional division meant the army had close to 20,000 troops in eastern Ladakh at the height of the crisis.

In normal conditions, it has only one division (Karubased 3 Infantry Division). As per inputs received by intel agencies, Chinese units are also withdrawing from their areas gradually.

The search for a new airfield is expected to revive the Indian Air Force's Nyoma airfield project that has been languishing for many years now, as it would be turned into a fully-fledged base where all types of transport aircraft can land.

The IAF had once landed its Antonov-32 aircraft at this airfield and has been trying to develop it as its base closest to the Chinese border in eastern Ladakh.

Sources said the IAF had also tried to look at Chushul for developing an airfield but it did not seem to be a viable project and is more interested in the development of Nyoma where the air strip was last used in the 1960s.

Nyoma is located at a height of 13,000 feet and India stopped using it after the war with China in 1962, but reactivated it in 2009.

India is also upgrading all of its seven Advance Landing Grounds (ALGs) in Arunachal Pradesh, some of which have already been activated.

IAF's C-130J Super Hercules planes have recently been landing there. However, these are not fully-fledged air bases but landing strips which can be used to drop off troops and supplies.

Some can be used for refueling fighter jets. The Arunachal ALGs were also deactivated after the 1962 war.

Since August, India and China have been engaged in a bitter stand-off on Bhutanese soil in Doklam as the Chinese were building a road to Jhamphiri which would have brought it very close to an area which separates the northeastern states from the rest of the country.

IAF fighter pilots with Israeli fighter pilots. There on an aircrew exchange program.

Livefist Twitter link
A milestone in the military cooperation between the Israeli and Indian Air Force: a delegation of Indian aircrew members was hosted by Ramat-David AFB, took off for a sortie in a “Barak” (F-16C/D) and simulated in the Israeli Air Force’s Mission Training Center

As part of the aircrew exchange between the Israeli and Indian Air Forces, a delegation of Indian aircrew members visited Israel in the past week. “The purpose of the visit is to learn the ways of the Indian military and to teach them how our military operates. Israel and India are fundamentally different. India is the seventh largest country in the world, as opposed to Israel’s limited territory”, explained Maj. Tamir, Deputy Commander of the “First Jet” Squadron and the Israeli leader of the visit. “Their aerial warfare missions are different to ours, so cooperation between the people the militaries are comprised of is a tool meant to connect us and create goodwill ambassadors”.

During the three day-long visit to Israel, the Indian delegates visited an “Iron Dome” battery, Ramat-David AFB’s “First Jet” Squadron, and performed sorties in the backseat of a “Barak” (F-16C/D) with the squadron’s pilots.
The Indian delegation also visited Hatzor AFB’s Mission Training Center, in which it dealt with mission-driven thinking. In addition, the Indian aircrew members were introduced to the IAF’s daily challenges and the way it deals with attacks on terror organizations in urban terrain.

The visit to Israel was preceded by a delegation of pilots from the “First Jet” Squadron that visited the Indian Air Force in July. “Our pilots performed two sorties in Su-30 aircraft operated by the Indian Air Force”, shared Maj. Tamir. "It’s an advanced aircraft, operated differently to the way we are familiar with. Being exposed to different platforms and systems is important to us. Throughout the aircrew exchange we learned that the definition of an aircrew member's duty in India is different to its definition in our air force. An example of this is that in India, only a quarter of the aircrew members are pilots, while most of the others are WSOs (Weapon System Operator)".

On the map Phalodi airstrip is nothing with a runway with no support infra or Hangerss, some village roads infact cross it. It can at best be an emergency landing, it will take a year or two to develop it.

Regarding Nal airfield thanks

The border itself moves east in that area, phalodi is about the same distance from the border as Jaisalmer, and almost in between the two larger bases at Jaisalmer and Nal.

PAf doctrine is obvious from thier bases, main bases south of Lahore are Maripur Karachi, Jacocobad Shabaz and Shorkot Road. Whereas Sargodha,Mianwali,Murid, Kamra,Kohat means they are mainly concentrated on Islamabad, Lahore area defensively and offensively over Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot.

NO wonder either in war or with uniformed Jidihadi combatants, Pathankot and Avantipura are always in the radar of the Pakis.
