If the IN is gung ho about this carrier aircraft the only system that makes any sense is Rafale-M , The commonality with IAF and already established training/maintanence/spares etc make it a much more sensible option given the alternatives .

But questions need to be asked about Mig 29k evaluation and selection if IN seriously feels like replacing them (or refusing to order more/attrition numbers ) after just 7-8 ? years of carrier ops .

I mean just two years ago Adm Lanba was saying they had figured out the issues and ironed out any supply chain problems .

If the no. of carrier aircraft has shrunk from 54 to 34,why not shrink the carrier size to suit the budget too? :rotfl:

Because it is easier and faster to add more aircrafts than it is to add new Aircraft Carriers..

And AC's are multi-decade workhorses aren't they?

But which birds can operate from the VikA and V-2? Only the 29K and NLCA! The lust for new birds is a sneaky way ,the thin end of the wedge to get the green light for CV# 3

India sent a request for a batch of carrier-based fighters MiG-29K / KUB for the aircraft carrier "Vikrant"

India has sent a request for a batch of carrier-based fighters MiG-29K / KUB for the aircraft carrier "Vikrant"

India intends to purchase a new batch of Russian MiG-29K / KUB carrier-based fighters, the corresponding request has already been sent to the Russian side. Vladimir Drozhzhov, Deputy Head of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSMTC) of Russia, spoke about this during the Aero India 2021 exhibition.

Answering a question from journalists, Drozhzhov explained that Russia had received a preliminary request from India for the supply of MiG-29K / KUB carrier-based fighters and had already sent its proposals to the Indian military. Currently, a tender is expected to be announced for the supply of carrier-based aircraft for Indian aircraft carriers, but Russia is hoping for an intergovernmental agreement.
Number of Mig 29k not specified but says INS Vikrant will carry 14 Mig 29K/KUB.

They should order 4-6 NLCA for permanent deployment on board these ships to get a lot more useful data for TEDBF. Easy for HAL to build half a dozen within two-three years also.

MiG-29K order seems to be attrition replacement at best, at worst some rumour.

IN's fighter acquisitions are now linked to IAC-II.

They will likely be attrition replacements, especially the twin seater KUB variant.

If they can soldier on with the MiG-29 fleet, till TEDBF is ready it would be great.

INS Vishal will not arrive for another two decades anyway.

https://twitter.com/TheWolfpackIN/statu ... 55554?s=20 ---> Report: Thanks to 24% rise in Navy's defence capital budget, Indian Navy has adequate funds for signing a deal to buy 10 MQ-9B SeaGuardian UAVs in upcoming financial year, as per an Indian Navy official.

https://twitter.com/daeroplate_v2/statu ... 36864?s=20 ---> Such drones can only do the surface patrol mission, which is also feasible with MRMP C295. if they want to offload the P8 to only ASW, better to kit P8 with ventral SAR radar also for dual-roling the land GMTI mission...reuse/sharing is better than waiting 20 yrs for dedicated

https://twitter.com/TheWolfpackIN/statu ... 56737?s=20 ---> I think we will buy the ASW kit for MQ-9B. Although yes only the P-8I will have the capability to strike subs unless the Mk54 gets certified on MQ-9.

Like it or loath it ,extra 29Ks are the only cost-effective option for the IN for this decade for the 2 CVs. It appears that most problems of the Ks have been sorted out too. In fact,if extras are bought, they should be upgraded ones with AESA radars, etc.,uniformity with Tejas Mk-1A .Retro-upgrades to the first batch later in the decade. Upgraded 29UPGs are supposed to be able to soldier on for at least 3 more ddcades. These 29Ks upgraded would be v.useful assets to complement our future carrier fighters either aboard the flat tops ,or from naval air bases in the ANC,mainland, etc.
In addition, at least a handful of NLCAs bought ,twin-seat for carrier trg. purposes and war reserves. It will give loads of input for our future carrier fighters,TEDBF or preferably the N-AMCA.

Quite plainly the Chinese Himalayan adventure was to contain India in its northern front and not to expand in the sea ., read if there is no expeditionary capability envisioned for the Navy ( as in an Aircraft carrier group for example) as a result of this then they have won

https://twitter.com/strategic_front/sta ... 00706?s=20 --> Indian Navy's Il-38 "Sea Dragon" can carry two Sea Eagle AShMs. The Indian Navy's Sea King helicopters used the Sea Eagle AShMs, thus they were integrated to the Il-38s for logistical commonality. The upcoming DRDO NASM-SR would replace the Sea Eagles on the Sea King helos & probably the Il-38s too.

NASM-SR at 380kg with 55km range has been designed for medium naval helicopters.

There will likely be NASM-MR variant at over 100km for fixed wing MPA. Weight around 500kg. Larger boosters perhaps?

Longer range 200km+ (and heavier 1200kg) would be fulfilled by Brahmos-NG for fighter aircraft.

Some of the 24 MH-60Rs would need to be used for pilot and crew training, as well as acting as reserves during routine repairs and refit of the fleet.

Most of the system like AQS-22 ALFS dunking sonars and various other equipment seem to be modular in nature so that they can be removed and installed fairly straightforward.

With CV#3 on the shelf in favour of SSNs, the need for the 50+ carrier strike aircraft will also be redundant. How this isgoing jo afffct the TEDBF/ NLCA plans remains to be seen.

TEDBF is still viable.

sankum-ji, there are two TEDBF variants - STOBAR and CATOBAR - as per Project Director Vinod Kumar. He mentions it at some point in this video ---> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NOKhRzAhp8

So initially, the STOBAR variant will come out and then followed by the CATOBAR variant. The first flight is scheduled for 2025/2026. This will be the STOBAR variant. Enough time for TEDBF development to start replacing the MiG-29K in the early 2030s as planned.
